I think it would be neat to see a series that puts the MLB Champ and the NPB champ against each other.

WBC is a joke. NPB is somewhere between AAA and MLB, which is quite a compliment. There are definitely some superstars who can play anywhere, but as a whole they are below MLB. Look at how many NPB stars have had dominant rookie seasons at the age of 18. In MLB even the most talented players spend several years in the minor leagues. And most of them fail. You would never see an 18 y/o come up and dominate. And the A's would mop the floor with any AAA team. If they played in the NPB they'd be a good team.

If there was a big difference, they would have won that tournament even if they weren't the best members. In other words, they can't win unless they have the best members. This is not simply due to a lack of skill. On the other hand, even if a big league player goes to the Japanese league, there will be cases where he is unable to fit in. It is possible that the results will be lower than when they were in the big leagues. It often happens in football(soccer) that players are unable to perform to their full potential because they are unable to adapt to the playing style or environment. Changes in the environment and league style are that important for players. You can't judge a player's ability just because they can't keep up their performance in Japan in other leagues. Of course, big League Baseball is definitely superior. But I think you underestimated it too much. I would agree with your opinion if even the non-best members had overwhelmingly defeated Japan.

The average NPB player is obviously going to be worse than the average MLB player because of the amount of international players in the MLB from cuba, mexico, US, canada, DR, PR, etc.. while NPB is mostly only japanese with some international players per roster. But the best of the NPB are 100% on the level of some of the best in the MLB and saying otherwise is pure ignorance. And there were also only like 8 japanese players in the MLB this past season and only like 3 of them were on the WBC team (the only one that would've made the WBC roster was kodai senga, but he wanted to be with mets in pre season to get more used to MLB environment). The other reason is that the farm league in the NPB is way less fleshed out than MLB's. It is much more beneficial most times to have a young player develop quicker by getting them to play at the top level as quickly as possible than have them waste time against worse competition

As a dodger fan I hope they don’t get ohtani unless he signs well below the value of how he’s been performing, or a contract that starts off at like 55 mil a year but then later on becomes more like 30mil, but again he can probably do better than that. It’s just such a huge commitment all residing on one player who has so many question marks around whether they’ll be able to keep up their pace and not get injured again.

Ohtani, Imanaga, and Nola would be a near-perfect offseason for us. I think we'll end up with 2 of those 3.

Getting him (and/or other high-value SP options) then trading some of our younger pitchers for bats would be a classic DiPoto move. That said, we already sunk a lot of money into Ray & Castillo so we'll most likely aim lower.

A little bit more explosive is an understatement. Pedro's fastball movement was crazy, nothing like the straight one this guy throws. I get the sentiment comparing them by height but Pedro had full command over his a+ fastball, maybe the best circle change ever and an often overlooked a+ curveball. His three pitches might all have been the best in the mlb at that time. I cant even find a pitcher in the history of the game to compare him to. You cant compare him to this guy except for the approach angle.

You're right about Pedro's fastball. It was special. Still, let's give Yamamoto a chance. He may not win Cy Young but may give his new MLB team a chance to win by going at least 6 innings every 5th day. @@m.o.5291

Yeah that article got viciously mocked on Japanese baseball twitter. There seems to be this mindset that Japanese baseball culture has not evolved since the 1980s, when in reality it has. The only time we've really that come in to play is when Shohei said he didn't want to sign with the Mariners because he felt it was "Ichiro's team". That seems to have been extrapolated into the thinking that no Japanese player wants to sign with the Mariners. Except... Ichiro wasn't the first Japanese Mariner, Kaz Sasaki was. And Ichiro didn't hinder the Mariners from signing Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Hisashi Iwakuma and Munenori Kawasaki.

Great point! Although I think that whole aspect has been overblown. I mean they are used to playing with a full team of Japanese players & going to a new country across the globe, having someone who speaks your language & knows your culture can far outweigh the big brother aspect.
