My cat wrote down some detailed instructions on how to pet her. She made me sign a contract. Whenever i pet her wrong she threatens to sue me and take me to court.
Unfortunately, some people really don't understand that cats are different than dogs. They call cats assholes because they don't shower you with constant attention and they expect them to have the same body language as dogs. Then they blame the cat when they get scratched when it's their fault for not understanding. Dog people and people who have never owned cats would benifit from this video.
I think the most confusing difference between cat and dog body language is the tail. Its really hard for young kids to undertand the differences and remember them.
Hamster Munchies I agree about the confusing differences, but I don't think it's all that difficult to learn. Especially for kids. It might take some getting used to if all they've had is exposure to dogs, but that's what parental guidance and supervision is for. It should be taught all around that animals in general will let you know if they want you to get close and give them some attention. Even dogs give visual cues where they want to be pet. Cats are just a little more choosy about it in general. I think my black cat, Leo, is an exception XD He loves belly rubs, belly pats, hard scritches along his face, and big hugs. You can do as many at one time as you please and he is the happiest kitty.
I agree completely. If I HAD to choose between a dog or cat, I'd choose a dog. But only because they fit my personality. I love the showering of attention and excitement when I come home. I love training them and constantly cuddling. But, I love cats as well. I'd rather have a dog AND a cat. I hate when cat people talk crap on dogs and dog people talk crap on cats. Both are wonderful animals, just drastically different. Neither one is better than the other. They may be better for you, but not better in general. Stop the hate, dog and cat people, and respect all animals.
Hamster Munchies Actually, dogs talk with their tails too, but most people just assume that if the their tale is moving it's a good thing. The position of the tail says more with a dog. A dog with a relaxed tale (not tucked between their legs or pointing straight up) is most likely to be friendly.
@@CrownedCurls Love her name btw! My 21 (her birthday soon) girl is still living an active life, gets her sun spots & her walks in the back garden usually under the watchful eye of the dog
Perhaps it works better for you to do the 'finger in front of nose and softly scratch head'-thing. Inless your cat's nose also doesn't work anymore? XD
+megalomania345 I'm not referring to the belly rub. I'm talking about the static electricity he talks about in the video. Felines liking belly rubs is just common knowledge.
+Kitty Kat Most of the cat's I've had growing up never likes it either, I don't think most cat's do, that's why I think it's weird that my mum's cat loves it.
actually no, it's not common knowledge that cats like belly rubs. Many cats dislike belly rubs, unlike dogs. A cat rolling over to expose its belly means it trusts you because it's exposing it's most sensitive part, if you pet them there they can see it as an attack
yah my cat needs petting, like if i have my hand not in my pocket she'll come up trying to force me to pet her. When i try to sleep she uses my toes as a petting mechanism. I feel a bit abused but its okay cause i love it
LOL! I have 2 female cats, and they demand to be petted also. Cookie Baby shove her head into my hand, and then walks forward to get the whole back petted. Sometimes she'll be in my lap, and she turns over on her back presenting her belly. She loves being petted there and purrs the loudest when I do that. Itty Bitty crawls into my lap and rubs her nose with mine. Then she gets into the crook of my arm and puts her hind paws in my hand. I pet her backwards, running my fingers into her fur, and she lays her head on my shoulder purring up a storm. I love both of my cats fiercely, and they love me the same!
same...except when my cat clearly wants me to come to him. It's pretty obvious: I get up from my desk to get a drink or whatever, and he rolls over in his bed and strikes a "ohhhh I am soooooo cute you just have to come over here and pet me for a moment" pose, complete with a few slow blinks in my direction ;) It really is an invitation, and I usually oblige him. Then I go get my drink and he goes back to sleep.
I have had cats for 4 decades and all loved lots of cuddling and petting, until Argyle the Maine Coon. Jackson, your videos have been essential. Argyle's nervous system is finely tuned such that that the slightest action on my part has a big impact on him. The finger-nose, which initially felt like deprivation, was received with purring, soft curl at the end of his tail, and rolling onto his back and exposing his tummy. He was so cute! I had to discipline myself not to do a big cuddle and instead 1) touch only his nose 2) talk softly and slowly. He loves it! Less is more.
My cat does the cutest thing when you hold up objects or hands to her. Everyone who know her calls this inspection. She must first smell the item, consider it carefully for a couple seconds, and then either look down in disapproval or head-bonk it if it is approved. The finger-nose thing reminded me of that. Anyway, it’s so cute! Any time she wants attention and there are items nearby, she just looks up at the local human until they hold up an item and say, “Inspeck?” And she just lights up when someone asks her to inspect something, it’s so goddamn cute

I notice that a lot when I see how people who didn't live with an cat pet them. They often pet them very fast and with too much force, many times in a row... no surprise they stand up and leave immediately or get into "aggressive" play mode.
Our kitty who we lost earlier this year really loved it rough and exactly as you described, rubbing up and down hard along her back, the harder the better! She was almost 20 when we lost her but she had her oddities from the moment she was born and we loved her for them.
+Blagaflaga Many?? How can you say that they're okay? More than likely the cats that "seem" fine without any bonding with their human because they were not born into an environment that fostered that connection, cats are extremely social. So much that they want to eat with you sleep with you play silly games with you and head butt you and are sooo happy when you get home. And some cats are emotionally disturbed and traumatized. Or lived feral and yet to understand what humans are for to them. Even the ones that are distant, trust me, the have very subtle ways not obvious to the insensitive human. It's like saying an orphan doesn't need to rely on its parent. Whatever. You're only at most 10%accurate. So there
kariwattsup Just look at the evolution of cats vs dogs. Dogs have been selectively breed for thousands, if not tens of thousands of years, to be mild tempered, loving, and obedient. Cats, on the other hand, are a much more closely related to their wild cousins, and as a result are VASTLY more independent, don't require much affection, and simply don't often have an affinity for being that loving. I'm not saying they can't. I love cats, I'm just saying they don't usually need intimacy and it's very rare that you find one the is affectionate and desires affection as much as a dog.
+Blagaflaga whenever I'm gone and return home my cat always greets me as if she was a dog. she puts her paws on me like my dog did. had to put him down last month. so my cat is all I got now :(
It's like "whatever", because even when showing people videos like this, so many people will still blame the cat and act like cats are awful creatures and that dogs are the best even though dogs and practically any animal will behave similarly if you pet it wrong. Every animal has a preferable and a disagreeable way of being petted just like how you've kindly demonstrated here when it comes to many cats (which I thank you for btw). We just need to pay attention and know our companions more while not acting so damn selfish.
Yes, I agree. Before studying animal behavior, I would get bit by a cat or dog and not know why. Now, I know how to act around animals and have avoided getting bit. Yet, there was just twice, I nearly got bit by the neighbor's cats, Sassy. Once while holding and petting her and she warned me she didn't like the way I was petting and she was over-excited, as well. Just wanted to be fed or play. The other time, she was in my arms and I was petting her, she needed to scratch and itch and nipped at me to stop petting her so she can scratch herself. Now, I watch for little clues as to if she is distracted by something and I will stop petting her until she is ready for me to continue...
Once I was petting a dog and and he almost bit me because I was petting him wrong. As a person who is used to petting cats all the time, I was misinformed that dogs like to be petted everywhere. I tried to gently touch his tail and his teeth instantly came out. I instantly regretted it and I honestly felt so bad since I didn't mean to make him feel uncomfortable, I love all animals. We have to learn how to respect other living beings and understand their body language. Animals attack and bite because they can't tell us that they're annoyed otherwise. Although, if you pay attention they warn us before the attack
@@vivalachoba yeah, well they don't have words, so body language is they only thing they have to get their boundaries respected, and if someone ignores that language, their only option is to get aggressive. People need to stop blaming animals, their language is limited so it's our job to bridge the gap.
+AnimalLover See, that's how I wish my cat was. He oodles of fluffy blonde fur and bushy long tail mincing around the house, rubbing on my ankles, always wanting to be next to me, following me, but NEVER lets me PET him. He's like a forbidden delight that is always in sight, LOL.
+AnimalLover I pet them by their neck and they raise their head till the point their neck is growing. I also found a wild european cat the summer of 2015.
I had a cat that literally had no petting limits. He was the most loving cuddled, who drooled and loved belly rubs. He never met a stranger. I miss him still- RIHP Bob ❤️
My favorite way to pet my cat. Is when he sits besides me I do my own thing most of that time and we're both chill occasionally taking a break to pet him on and around the head. This morning he offered me his paw and we held hands for about a full minute.
Sounds just bout right man even I don't pet my 1yo boi I know he's too energetic to be treated like a toy I always let him pet me he just rubs his entire body all over my body and then gently cuddles over me for a nice nap, I always warn anybody who comes near him NOT to try to treat or pet him like a dog unless they wanna get scratched all over
You're right. I think folks are just agreeing with you? Also, cats who've been declawed develop pain in their bodies because missing the end of kitty's toes causes improper walking and it affects how their whole body moves ---compensating for this (walking with more weight forced onto the rear of the foot) causes unbalanced muscle and connective tissue function and chronic pain. Keep spreading the word. Cheers!:)
The ‘MichaelAngelo finger pointing’ at my cat changed my life thank you lol. Thought my cat had a three pat tolerance haha now she adores the gentle concentrated affection from just simple head scratches and head strokes. She’ll never be a lap cat but my ‘slow blink’ at her which I also learned from you is our telepathic ‘I love you’ hehehe 😽💗
My cat does not know the word over simulating. She wants me to pet her 24/7. I'll lay in bed and she will lay on the side of my arm so I can scratch her neck and face without moving my arm. We will both fall asleep while I am petting her. Oh and she will eat her dinner and then I will try to eat mine and she will stare at me the whole time. She won't touch anything. Just stare. But she is 14 now and she doesn't do anything that I don't like. She is a great cat and I love her.
i work with socializing kittens. how they are handled or not handled when very little makes a big difference. i work every part of their bodies, particularly areas that might set them off when they are older, if they are not used to it. i pet them backwards, work their tail, even gently pulling it, and scratch them especially where the tail starts growing from the back. i massage all their feet on top, between their toes, stroke their noses, their whiskers, their ears, and over their eyes. it is done very gently and lovingly, and they purr through EVERY part of this. the only thing they don't love is putting my face up to theirs, but i do it anyway, again so they won't swat their new owner if that should be done by them. knowing many kittens will be adopted for kids, this kind of child-proofs the cats. it is also great for attuning them to being handled a lot through the adoption process, and for later, how guests might handle them, not knowing their ways. very effective.
Nice: good to get them used to human behaviour when they're still forming their boundaries. I got my cat to put up with being held on his back, but he never really enjoyed it.
I hope you guys know that does have a tv Show called my cat from hell he helps to teach the owners how to help with the cats aggression and how they are taking care of there animals wrong. I don't think he has anything backwards because he has been doing this for many many years and is a professional. Just thought I had to let you people know who he was.
Depends on the cat. I pet my cat with my whole hand all the time and she adores it as long as I avoid her spine and belly. Our other cat, on the other hand, only likes to pet himself such as the video suggested (but he still likes the whole hand).
I have 3 cats of my own and 3 others in the house I live in. All of them love full hand petting and belly rubs. They jockey for affection. When one is done another takes its place. Not once have any of them shown aggression, or exploding, toward me. There is a mutual respect I suppose. When they've had enough they jump down or move away. I never try to stop them. (Unless of course I'm giving them full body inspections; fleas, dirt, etc.) Even then they "tolerate" it. I also have a dog in the house. But she's a cat too. lol
I've learned this with having cats all my life. One - people are too excited too much energy cats pick up on that and they don't like it. It would be like someone with all this energy in your face no you tell the person to calm down same with cats it's too much. Two -they can pick up on your moods if your relaxed and happy cats will mostly come to you then others cause they can pick up that you are in a relaxed nature and they know this person will be gentle and calm.
Yes, I learned that, too. When I was younger, I tried getting my grandma's cat, Meghan to come to me, with no avail! However, when I sat in a chair for a very long time and just chilled out, she would come to me and jump into my lap and I could pet her! Meghan always ran and hid, anytime little kids came into the house! Too much energy and they would be too sporatic, when trying to interact with a cat. Most cats don't like that! Now, I've learned all kinds of things about cat behavior, thanks to cat people like Jackson Galaxy! Now, I can get stray and even feral cats to come to me! Feral cats take a great deal of time and patience but, it can be done. Strays are easier, especially the more acclimated to human contact they are, the easier it is...
I'm an extremely introverted person and I dont like excessive energy. Cats immediately pick this up and just come to me. Unfortunately I don't have a cat but I take care of the strays in my neighbourhood. They light up when I come up to them and they really love being petted. I have some videos if them on my channel and they all just love to be on camera 😸❤
The biggest problem with many cat owners, is that, they think a Cat is a toy to play with. Some don't realize a Cat is a very complex and sophisticated living being that must be respected and treated with, again, respect and love.
I appreciate this! I got bit by my cat a week ago because I was petting her exactly like you mentioned. I'm used to petting my family's dog all over; belly, head, chest, etc. Your videos have been for informative and have helped me understand my cat much more.
Dude as someone with anxiety and ADHD, you just described what overstimulation feels like almost perfectly! I’ll add that all inputs (sights sounds etc) can also become jarring and even painful, and anything even close to touching you can start feeling clausterphobic, even your own body hairs. “Static buildup” describes that “trapped in your own skin” feeling perfectly omg! I’m a lot better than I used to be as a kid and teen about respecting cats’ cuddle limits, and my current kitty really loves snuggling and being pet, but she and I are still working on communicating about her stopping point. She’s really sweet and patient, so with petting to long, the only thing other than a “claws in” warning smack I’ve gotten is a “I’m gonna bite ya, move bitch!” Threat that results in a slow non- skin breaking bite if I don’t listen to her fast enough. Like a mama would give a kitten. I do my best to notice when she’s had enough before then, but if I miss that point or come back too soon after stopping there, the “final warnings” she gives definitely makes it clear she’s done. I respect the hell out of her patience, and I’m trying to make sure I respect her boundaries better.
To add to this, my cat flicks her tail when she’s calm and content, and happy to have someone nearby, like a dog does. I know of a single other cat who has this “backward” tail behavior. So sometimes its hard to tell that apart from the warning tail swish until its too late. She lets me play with her tail like a fuzzy fidget toy when she’s relaxed too, so really the only warning she gives me with it is if she starts pulling it away if I try to pet it. Sometimes really subtle ear flicks, paired with a slightly sour “mrrrrrow” but rarely ever traditional “overt” cat signs like the angry tail wag or pinned ears. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard her hiss, and only rarely have I seen her fur raise a little. Her body language is so subtle, and its readable because she expresses a lot with her big eyes, but definitely different than what’s “expected” for kitties. She also loves when I do the nose boop leading into her guiding pets. If I do any kind of full body pets, its never with a flat hand or a lot of pressure. The way I pet most critters, her included, is more of a “back scratch” - light touch that gets down into the soft floof. She loves her cheeks, chest, ears, and shoulders pet, and her tail woven through my fingers as she moves it. Such a sweetie.
Also just a general rule of thumb: *NEVER PET A CAT'S BELLY.* Most of the time when I've seen or heard of someone getting attacked while petting their cat it's because the cat showed their belly to the human and the human pet the cat's belly, which resulted in an attack. Cat's show you their belly, which is their most vulnerable spot, to show that they trust you not to go in for the attack. So by petting or scratching the belly you are basically shitting on that loving gesture they just gave you, while also making them feel scared and unsafe.
Not necessarily true. My cat will flop over and demand I stroke his chest. He purrs really loudly and starts kneading so it's obvious he loves it. If I stop, he uses his paws to pull my hand back to his tummy.
+B0badenvero8 - The 'secret' is to pet them, slowly, in the direction that their belly-fur grows, not against it...that's an irritating feeling, no matter what species you are. ;3
+Kate Speaks my cat enjoys having its belly scratched, i can even massage it sort of xD. The second cat i have gets furious if you even touch its belly for a second
+Kate Speaks I have five cats and I've never found that to be true with them. They all go limp as soon as I start scratching their belly, close their eyes and purr.
I'm 6 years late to this but my cat doesn't have that reaction. Usually, when I pet my cat, he will settle down and relax. Sometimes he will lay down and fall asleep. Often, he will look at me with semi closed eyes and just chill out with me. However, I pay attention to my cat and know his stimulation points. Usually, the areas I pet him are places I know he likes the most. Usually, that's around his face, on his cheeks, under his neck and on the top of his head. However, I stroke him slowly on those places and don't do it for long. Basically, I took the time to get to know him. I also know when to stop based on his body language. It takes time to get to know a cat but once a relationship is built and knowing their level of comfort, things can be absolutely great between a cat and his parent (the human companion).
Bel Some people simply have nothing better to do in life. They're miserable and for what ever reason, they go from video to video giving it a thumbs down and usually nasty comments. Beware of one HUGE troll that has been doing this for over a decade, and she did comment below and give it a thumbs down. She's cindybin2001 . If you ever see her attack a video, please report her.
There's a stray mommy cat that comes to our house to have meals. As soon as I put my hand on her head she pushes my hand telling me to pet her. She stretches her back to let me know she wants to be petted on her back. She pets me too while I'm petting her. She used to lick my hand before she got pregnant. idk why she isn't doing it now. But she's regular and I feel good that she keeps coming back for meals. I had 3 cats before. One wandered away and broke my heart. Another was killed by stray dogs. Another died of some stomach problem. I'm glad this one's not going anywhere...
My cat loves chin, neck or right above the tail. Don't pet him, scratches him. And the best part is, he knows what I like. He actially learned what I like and now he puts preasure on only my sholderblades with his little paws, moving around without claws and petting me. Now who's the owner and who's the pet?
my cat loves his belly being massaged and his eyes and ears being rubbed. All he needs is two cucumber slices and a towel and he'll fit right in a beauty spa haha
Tom Long I have 2 cats. One is a cat cat the other one a human cat. The second one come on my lap rolls on its back and wants to get rubbed all night long.
Tom Long Every one of my cats for 40+ years has learned to love their belly rubbed. It's true, it's not something cats do normally because it's something earned to the owner, like trust or respect with humans. To have a cat show it's belly willingly is the greatest honor they can bestow on their owner. But again, it's something earned, not just given away naturally.
I never realized how well I understood my kitties til now. I literally do the same technique of letting my cat guide me on what kind of petting, and attention it likes. I guess being around cats for 21 years has educated me thoroughly. Each new cat is like a brand new friend though, because they all have so much personality.
my cat just wants to be pet every second of every day... its so annoying. I have a roommate that pets the cat for hours then when he pushes the cat off he comes over and jumps on my lap and puts his head under my arm to be pet. We had a 7 yr old, a 6 yr old and a 5 yr old (siblings) over that had never had a cat before and they were picking him up and petting his fur backwards and holding him for a full 3 days including at night and he never ran away from them or bit them or anything. Then after they left he ran around the house crying looking for them for 2 days! He is always excited when they visit.
My cat's doesn't like to much petting. But loves being with me she'll sleep on me under me at the moment she's watching bird videos on RU-vid and has wrapped herself around my feet. I can't reach her but she wants to be touching me. She has never hissed lost her cool. When I pick her up she goes straight to my shoulder like a furry parrot and we'll go around the house looking at things. We play hide and seek or we'll play fetch. At night she asks for cuddles maybe 2/3 times a night sometimes she doesn't come at all but when she comes to me she'll purr and purr and pad and falls asleep next to me. Life is good and I wouldn't change anything about her.
Manuela Machado Sounds like you have a easily over stimulated (by petting) kitty...aren't they like dogs in how certain cats with their different personalities seem to do better with certain personalities in people? I used to have 2 kitties myself (a tiny calico and a huge long haired white kitty) and talk about different personalities with those two but I managed to figure them out and treated them in entirely different ways when they both were with me. (my big white kitty would LOVE to sleep between my legs and the calico would always sleep on my left shoulder about 95% of the time...the other 5% was what I liked to call her "middle of the night crazy hour" lolsss) but they both slept on me in those same spots pretty much the whole time I had them and YES I Miss them both now too and now, I haven't had a new cat after them for about the last 5 or 6 years by now
T. T. Miller Sorry about the loss of your kitties. Sounds like your lovely kitties were much loved. My Esme is a Bengal cat and she too is much loved she's only 3 and I can't imagine life without her. Blessings!
my little kitten got lost and we used to be like you manuela machado. my old female cat, linda died a few days later after brain the kitten got lost :(
andylinda12345 aj Sorry to hear about your loss. My cat is only 3 years old and I can't imagine a day going by without her. She's such a lovely cat she's asleep between my legs at the moment. 😊 Take care.
So true! I used to only have dogs as pet. Last year i found a stray kitten who was trapped under a fallen tree and i bringed him to the vet. I decided to keep him and actually now that he is grown up he is very loving with my family and me and even goes along pretty well with our dogs!
I laughed watching how anyone aware sees these subtle movements- BODY language is 80% of communication. Thanks cat cuddler of the world...the cat's savior...be you.
I read, years ago, that hypoallergenic cats were becoming available and that they would cost about $1500. They are genetically engineered but I don't know anything more about them.
I'm really allergic to cats, but I have 3 (and none are hypoallergenic). After about a month, you get accustomed to them and have a fraction of the allergies. For me, it only gets bad if I pet them and touch my eyes or if their fur gets in my nose
LOL I literally learned all this on my own. I feel so smart LOL I guess just because my cat is a loner but if you sit around her she will want some attention eventually. So I just put my hand out and she will rub all over it then she is chill with me petting her a bunch. Now its like once I start she never wants me to stop. :O Im guessing its because she is an outside cat so she doesn't get that much human attention.
I'm with you. When I was a kid our family took in a stray cat that came to our neighborhood. I learned what the tail swashing meant. I noticed he liked to rub against our hands with his mouth and sometimes his back. I will say, when we got out of the shower he loved to be pet, but he would usually play "Gotcha" at that time too. I think it was because we had washed off his scent, or the smell of the soap put him into a weird mode.
Scy Yeah, she does scratch a bit. But its not like me or my brother mind that much. I just see it as affection, which I feel like it is. She isn't like mean or anything. She is really nice and has a cool personality. Its just like she massages you with her claws lol.
if you come out of a shower, and the cat starts licking, biting a little, and using its claws a bit aswell, it's not necessarily a bad sign, or a sign of dislike.. in my case, it's due to my cat going wild over the scent, and it simply cannot get enough of it (i tried the soap on an empty cardboard toilet roll, and the same thing happend, aswell as 10 minutes of licking)
This is such good advice. My favorite technique is to just start gently scratching my cat somewhere on his head, then I leave my hand in the same spot with my fingers making the scratching motion, and he moves his head around to get the scritches where he wants them. And no matter how you do it, as Jackson says, watching their body language is absolutely key. If you pay even the least amount of attention, you will never face a "surprise" attack again.
I don't mean to brag but, my cat petting skills are over 9000... The neighborhood kitties purr before I even touch them and can stay with me for hours.
Basically don't treat your cat or any animal like it's another human, or anthropomorphize them. Don't think that they understand by default what a "No!" with a finger raised up in the air would make them understand that what they're doing doesn't satisfy your interests, or what they're doing is 'wrong' to us humans. Don't assume you understand the animal's emotion. Learn about cats' behavior. Be a responsible animal caretaker, don't think because you feed them or you bought them from a pet store makes them yours, and for the love of god don't dress cats with cute sweaters or hats, or put a collar with a bell on it.
I think this is pretty solid advice, thank you. People tend to anthropomorphize cats. They are cats. They have very different methods of communicating. By understanding more about the cat, your relationship with your pet cat will grow.
+Jay Philly Apparently you DO wipe your ass all wrong because you got shit for brains. xD Please don't feel insulted. It was just a play with words kind of joke. ;-D
You can pick him up sometimes and run around with him or sthing just as you would playpush a human or while he's doing sthing like pranking a human but only as rarely as you would prank a human and make sure it's fun
So I think the thing that I love so much about your videos is that you are showing people how to not interfere with a cat being a cat. Too many people seem to have a cat but want a dog. Cats are so immensely rewarding as companions if you simply respect them and let them be cats. The reward of a cat choosing to be around you is immense. I wish people would remember that these are not automatons that are made to respond to human stimulus in a certain way. These are sentient beings who deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.
I love that your 23 year old is in this vid. Our oldest right now is 25. We started rescuing to honor our Baby Kitty, who spent 29 wonderful years with my family. She picked us that day in that Humane Society,& I’m thankful she did, as she taught me so much about the language of cats. When she slowly went deaf it really didn’t matter much, she still understood us & we understood her. We made some slight changes for her convenience, of course. You learn so much by just watching them😀
That’s amazing we just rescued an older cat from a friend that passed away not sure how old she is seems middle age to early senior between 8 to 12 years old
my cat will bite a hole in a hand if i would touch his belly :D he don't like when somebody touch him at all.... just sometimes is ok to pet around head :(
Hey Jackson! that cat you tried the finger nose technique is 23 years old?! What is the average length of a cat's life? Awesome program, greetings from Egypt!
My black cat "Gus" was 18 yrs old when he was run over by a car because he was sleeping under the tire & because his hearing was going & because he felt so safe, he did not move & got run over by the parked car.Sad thing was, everyone lied to me, because he had been gone for 3 days (he was NEVER gone so long & the last day I t was pouring rain-soaked NEVER would've been out in that - I KNEW he was dead)As much as people lied to me I knew the truth.I was right. My little best buddy of 18 yrs was gone to me.Why these people thought they could get away with this lie still bothers me.
+saffy blu My grey/white cat is called Sapphire but we call her "Saffy" for short! Also, sorry about your cat :/ I don't think I could ever forgive someone who hurt my cats.
I always call the finger nose thing the "Nose Touch" and when I say it out loud my 3 cats know that it's time for petting. Just like Jackson shows they will connect their nose to the tip of my finger and then guide my hand either to their ear or under the chin. I do pet them in other ways, but the "Nose Touch" kinda let's them know right away that they are in control of the petting.
***** Yeah that has been one big issue with me, as I grew up with a dog and am more used to them, that and I think of her as a furry toddler...but I do really love her and am working on being a MUCH better mommy!
ThatDamnBlonde yes all animals. And could you please refrain from making all vegetarians and vegans look bad? Whatever your reason for not eating meat, 'it's not gentle to eat dead things' shouldn't be it. You can do disgusting things to dead things, but gentle on something that can love and feel is a whole different ballgame to gentle on an inanimate object.
I know my cats temper and what the signs are to stop but when my friend Jordan comes over he called her a brat because she scratches and bites him. He has a boy cat that likes to be rough housed with my cat is super gentle but he can't seem to get that through his head.
Kat, well at least she has you, Kat--someone who took the time to understand her psychologically and physiologically! In other words, you just know your cat!
Wow. Holy shit, I've always hated seeing other people pet cats growing up, because I knew they were doing it wrong, but of course they'd just get super indignant if I scolded them. Now I know I actually did figure out the better method, even if I didn't know why. That's amazing
You're more observant than the rest. I saw those signs in my cat too and came to my own conclusion, but my mum insisted on explaining their behaviour away as something crazy. So yep, I totally understand your feeling.
People are oddly defensive about how they treat their cats (and dogs) where even if they are doing HUUUUUGE no-no's... they will defend it to the death.
I hate it when they tell you that YOU'RE PETTING your cat wrong, and then they attempt to show you, and then when your cat runs away, they blame him and say you messed him up. Uh, no. HE DOESN'T LIKE BEING PET AGGRESSIVELY. I'm not "wimpy petting" him, I'm just petting him normally! I REALLY hate when people try to hold your cat prisoner, and then try to blow you off when you tell them to let him escape when he's trying to get away. And then you're forced to get angry at them so they FINALLY let him go out of shock, and suddenly you're the oversensitive asshole.
omenakookos One of our cats (we have two siblings) very rarely seeks attention (whereas his sister will seek out my lap wherever I am). The only time he'll consistently seek attention is when I go for a lie down on the sofa. He even knows from my behaviour that I am about to go and lie down and he'll get to the sofa before me. Once I'm lying down, he'll try to curl up on the pillow, changing his position a number of times in order to get closer to my head, stares into my face and makes that loud soliciting purr that anyone who's spent long enough around cats will have learned to recognise. If I stop stroking him (or don't stroke him immediately), he starts poking me in the face with his paw as if to say, "Come on then, give it to me. What do you think I'm here for?" When he's had enough, he just gets up and walks away but he won't let me stop petting him until he's quite sure that he's had enough. He rarely falls asleep during petting, unlike his sister. In almost every way, our two cats are polar opposites.
RoadRunnerLaser That's how my cats are! The nice thing about the furbaby that does the head rest part is that he is fluffy and long haired and he has recently started to stay at the top if I doze like an extra pillow. Once I found him spread out on my belly and the blanket on the floor and when I looked at him he gave me this I AM THE ONLY BLANKET OF FLUFF YOU NEED WOMAN! HOW DARE YOU TRY AND REPLACE ME WITH SOMETHING SO INFERIOR!!! NOW COME HERE AND PET ME OUT OF FORGIVENESS!!! LOL!!!
I had a cat that really loved being petted. He did purr loudly when he was on top of my chest area. He was a big sweat and friendly cat. I think on that one cat that I never did pet him the wrong way. He was my best friend.
Jackson Galaxy Dude, your videos should be shown to kids in elementary. It´s easy-to-acquire knowledge, and yet so many people don´t know to "read" their pet. I really do think that in a society with that many pets like the western society, things like this should be taught at an early age. It´s existential for a good bond with the animal, and happiness for both owner and pet. I doff my hat, guv´nah!
Little kids get scratched & learn to stop annoying the cat. Adults get scratched & then want to teach the cat how to behave. Or see the kid get scratched & want the cat declawed. Just raise kids alongside animals from a young age, they learn better that way.
This makes total sense. My Siamese cat is really easygoing but I watch her tail. The tail signals her mood. I’ve never been scratched by her in twenty one years because I watch her tail communications. It’s exactly what was said by Jackson.
Rowland Buck That’s what it would be. Mine would give little warnings as well but it was very rare, maybe she was feeling well or sore or I was over teasing her. My fault always.
My cat dislikes being petted, now I know why. And she will allow me to pick her up but most of times, she won't enjoy it, so I avoid it. If someone else tries to pick her up, she will show her discomfort and try to get away..
My cat loves being pet even pretty roughly. However, he doesn't like being picked up or his tail being pet. He used to dislike his rear legs being touched, but novadays he doesn't mind that either.
For picking up cats you have to let them go immediately when they want to go. If you don't do that they will feel trapped. I also let my cat sit on my arms instead of holding her. And If I feel some tension I ask if she wants to go. Then she says 'I want to go' or she relaxes because now she knows she can go whenever she wants and that I won't exceed her limits ..or how you say that in English.
I had 2 cats and 1 of them would sit and be stroked for ever but the other was like your cat. He didn't like being petted and didn't like being picked up either. His most comfortable stroking position was when he weaved in and out of my legs as I was walking. Then he'd accept a stroke or two.
