I think you should practice both lean back methods. There is a Thai boxer who is very famous how quick he was with this when the opponent stance closer and swings ( or kicks, but that doesn’t happen of course in boxing ..) Love the enthusiasm and fun in your videos !!
Tony when im leaning back my on the side of my strains and hurts from repetative motion is that normal. Im doing the lean your way, but it hurts still from repetative motion.
It always impresses me how fast boxers can lean out the way of a punch, the instinct is to turn away or duck, but staring right at it while it tickles your nose takes skill and courage!
You just get a feel for their range. Their fist can only move so far from their torso. One of my friends from high school trained with me for about 2 years. We'd always partner up at least once in class. I knew his range well enough that I could let him throw a punch at a given distance, stand still, and he would lightly touch my nose with the end of his glove. Frustrated the hell out of him
I actually disagree, Im a begineer and I utylized Lean back with good effect and confidently and it feels natural to me... sliping and rolling On the other hand....
Always amazes me how every time I seem to have something I'm struggling with in training, you have a video that helps me clear it up. Fantastic work, mate!
I always think of Mayweather for this technique and how effective it was for him, but also saw a video just the other day where his opponent followed up with a right and cracked Mayweather good (I think it was Maidana) which shows both sides of the technique exactly as the video shows.
Exactly mate, Floyd is a master on this. Good reaction and good speed in countering, but there's a pro's and con's on this just like stepping in with punches.
Look any slip or lean back, sometimes it works sometimes it does not. You make adjustments througout the fight. Mayweather also counters very well be leaning back. You cannot just fight with total defence, every move has a strength and weakness.
One tip that helped me learn effective leans or pulls is to not just "lean back" but to also push my knees forward as I lean back. Kind of as tho I'm pivoting my weight around a horizontal bar at my hips. As I go back with my upper portion while my lower portion goes forward. This keeps the center of gravity in place in the middle. Theres a kick boxer who has mastered this and can literally go completely horizontal but I forget his name.. Anyway, I call it the "pivot lean" or "pivot pull"🙂 It the same principle as doing the "limbo"
Sparred for the first time today against a pro fighter and got my ass handed to me here to make sure it never happens again your videos help out a lot man!
4:21, yes Muhammad Ali is more square, but I think in that one photo, it’s more so to avoid that big looping left hand hand that was just thrown. Yes, Ali often was squared when he pulled back, but in many cases, he was also bladed, especially when circling to the left with his butterfly circling footwork. But in that specific photo, I’m taking a page from Canelo’s book here, Canelo likes to pull back whilst turning his head to the left to let the left hook fly past him. I just stood up and tried this, and yeah! If you do the pull back like how you explained in this video, but ALSO turn your head to the left to roll with the left hook (or in Canelo’s case, the left hook doesn’t even touch him), then your body naturally becomes more square and more waist/lower back focused and yeah… hurts my back too mate! I wonder how these guys did it… 🤔 I was experimenting with a neutral or even a more posterior pelvic tilt, and that seemed to help prevent the pain, but still not a resounding answer of how these guys did it without lower back pain.
Been working on the lean back for a decade+ now except I can never seem to get enough mustard on the straight right going with THE LEAD LEFT HOOK. It has worked really well although when I coach kids I still go with the straight right even though I have never come close to mastering it. Good vid as always. Happy New Year in sunny scary LA, Ton.
More Great Training from the Great Coach I started training with!!!...Thanks Tony !!!...Keep 'um coming and May God Bless and Protect You and Yours always !!!
Happy new year Tony. Awesome video as always. I am a shorter person so will need to learn how to position my feet better so that I can work inside. All the best from Bevan, New Zealand

Sometimes, when we are in fight , we get scared or do not feel confident to land punches....in result we face loss, pls a video on it, it would be very helpful 👍
I'll add that to my lists mate, thanks for request. And turn ur notifications so you don't miss it. Check this out to improve your head movement like Canelo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k2M_aDFbFOw.html
lean back: "realistic" sway back: "bryan hawk", he does a completely normal lean back but his body is literally paralell to the ground which creates awkward angles to throw a punch or an effective uppercut which i can do. im pretty sure everybody can do that but if not then i might be half superhuman idk
Hey tony,at first i want to thank you for all your tips. And i need a tips. When i dont jab first with left,i cant throw a good right cross. I checked my form for both of them, and its okay. And when i throw 1,2 or 1,1,2 my footwork gets sloppy and i cant come back safe. Any advice? (Sorry for the bad english)
If they're ever stepping forward with your lean back then can you just pivot out on the back foot to create a better angle for yourself? Thanks Tony, we appreciate your wisdom!
Hi Tony. I would like to know what your opinion is about a standing punching bag and a hanging punching bag. What are the pros and cons of them? Thanks
I always wanted to progress into heavyweight, because i was sick from making diet. My trainer told me i am to small for a good heavyweight. I said, Mike Tyson is even smaller than me. My trainer said, yeah, you are not Mike Tyson. Same with the lean bag: but Toni, Muhammed Ali and Roy Jones Jr leaned back like that. Well, yeah, you are neither Ali nor Roy. So listen to Toni here...
It is about flexibility, some guys are more flexible and can come back quick due to practice, those far lean backs are timed due to the reach of the opponent trying to hit you.
Hey Tony, I'm hamza from India, I'm a national level Boxer. I started watching your videos, they are informative and useful, I wanted to ask your gym location where you coach in England... looking forward to train under you, Please reply, regards
Wrong about keeping the hands up, hands down is for balance and helps to come back up. Hands up makes it easier for the other guy to touch the gloves. You can keep the back hand up. Also if you have confidence in your timing no reason to keep the hands up. Thing is you have an idea of what pattern your opponent is going to throw. Look at mayweather.
