This device is SO COOL. After seeing it, I think folding laptop screens are gonna be the future of this space. 20”+ laptops can be a thing! Would you want a monster screen like this? Does that crease/ripple bother you?

Yes, the crease bothers me as much as a camera hole on a phone's screen. The idea of a good screen is visual perfection and creases/holes ruin them. Can you imagine your tv with a hole or crease on its screen? Would you even buy a tv like that??

I feel like Asus is producing quite a lot of innovative laptops in recent years. Some examples: - ZenBook duo with two screens - rog flow x13 as the second 13" 2 in 1 with dedicated GPU after the surface book, but with a much better CPU - rog flow Z13 a 13" tablet with dedicated GPU and powerful CPU - a much better eGPU for their flow devices to address the typical bottlenecks of eGPUs ...and there are a few more things I could mention. It's a larger Surface Book Neo, which I was excited about before it was cancelled. I like the way they made use of the unavoidable wedge by giving the keyboard a storage spot.
@ninbura

This reminds me of Microsoft's Neo project that never saw the light of day. I love the idea of the neo, pull the keyboard off and now you have 2 displays. I think this is cool too, but one large display is not quite as useful as two distinct displays IMO. With two distinct you can still have glass screens, for way more durability, easier management of separate applications, etc. My #1 use case would be one display for applications (the top display), and the bottom display to take notes. But there's plenty of other stuff that works great for dual screens, especially for programming. Dual displays > folding displays IMO.

Yep, I still prefer dual screen than folding screen. Currently use zenbook duo & my use case is autocad at top & folder/reference at bottom. But the half bottom screen is not enough, feels cramp. Would be lovely if samsung also start doing dual screen laptop and pairs together with tab s8 ultra.

I literally said when folding screens came about that they should be used as a way to make proper large screen real estate more portable - FINALLY people are doing it. I think I'm working in the wrong industry.. 🤣

I could actually see this being useful in the future. Once the crease is solved, if it ever is, this could be where laptops and foldables end up.

I'll be honest and say I have a cynical side to my brain that's being unnecesarily judgy of this. It looks like a great idea, and I love seeing companies doing different things with every-day tech. If we never did that, we wouldn't have had so many of the things we have now, and how many of those things had an initial reaction of "You want to put WHAT on the phone?". I will say- it's obviously not going to be the best product, straight away. I think things like this require that initial jump so they know what to work on in the future, the same as they did with 3-in-1 laptops, or things of that nature, tech that didn't do exactly as the rest of its kind did, so while I'm (I'd say, understandably) a little cynical of this exact model, I'd love to see what future this line is going to have.

Basically a giant portable monitor that can be folded in half to become a lap top. Now they just need to focus on driving down the costs, removing the crease and create matte displays. I believe LG, Samsung and other Chinese company had prototype displays recently that were creaseless. Exciting times ahead.

@@GyariSan1 Creaseless would be perfect, thats what catches me the most, fear that over time it looks as worn and crumbled as an old books spine.
@GyariSan1
@GyariSan1 2 года назад
@@UntrainableWizard Yea it's not a great look, and your concern is justified. I personally own a Galaxy Flip, and while many users say the crease is negligible after a while, but I personally tend to disagree. Yes it's true you can tolerate it, but the main problem is after a while it just looks very dated, as you would put it: worn and crumbled as an old books spine.

Cynical with foldable as well. I'd never buy them until they are as durable as non-folds. Plastic and touch screen do not mix.
@pat5zero

The thunderbolt 4 in the laptop is a bonus, you can run docks off the laptop with all the extra devices like external hard drives, LAN networks and extra monitors. One wonders with sitting the keyboard in the laptop position and changing it on a daily basis, would it end up scratching the unused screen surface? Or is there a big enough space between the screen and the bottom of the keyboard, would it warrant a sleeve over the unused half of the screen. These type of screen set up with touch control in mind tend to get very dirty quick. More ram and a i9 cpu and you could use it as a gaming laptop depending on the gpu.

i think in time they can make a hinge and a mechanism that won't need a crease in the display, so it will just somehow roll inside the device when closed and flush to it when opened.

This thing is awesome, and I say this as someone who bought the Padfone Infinity, if you know what that is. This is a laptop/tablet/TV as far as functionality goes for me. I've been looking at the Raspberry for a while now, but I never bought one because if I wanted to travel, I'd need a portable screen for it. But this solves everything in one device, so if I can afford it when it releases, my PC and 40 inch LCD TV will be going into the storeroom.
