Their reaction to the Fleshmancer was pretty much my reaction when I first played that part as well. I just thought "you can't just drop something like the Fleshmancer so casually!"
Garl's characterization is a good study in how to make the player feel an emotional connection to a non-player-character in a short amount of time. They use a LOT of time-saving tricks and emotional triggers. 1. Showing them as a child. 2. Something them defend you selflessly. 3. Showing them getting injured at all, but ESPECIALLY while defending you. 4. Taking him away for a while and then bringing him back, ESPECIALLY also having the player characters verbally comment on his absence. 5. Food. 6. Positive and/or disarming energy 7. Making him a brown-haired normie, ESPECIALLY among super-people. 8. Memorable name. etc etc. I was shocked to see so many well-thought-out decisions go into Garl in such a short time span. This is an obstacle that I myself find it hard to contend with, and I wager that every other writer does too, but they really pulled it off.
Seeing this comment is weird for me, because everything you wrote is true, and yet I immediately hated Garl! I feel like that probably says something about me, because I've seen multiple comments from people who love him. As someone who doesn't, it was really interesting ro read your breakdown of why people do.
For me Garl is way too wordy, almost like he's taking over as a leader and spokesman of the whole gang. But he does know how to cook, I'll give him that.
the two replies are really intriguing because i think it more shows how the writers made Garl feel REAL versus making him feel loved, which can be more important

@@shockofthenew haha, i was surprised to get a second shout out! also seriously, thank YOU for leaving such a nice comment and finding these catstamps useful! kind words keep me going!
Silly thing-- was watching older SSS vids- in the Raft game (4 years ago) a joke was made about not sharing a bed on the raft because the characters aren't married, but now y'all ARE! and it made me smile for you guys 💕
I love that! I was getting major Golden Sun vibes. Also stoked that exploring is rewarded. Even something as simple as checking the cave the boss came from just in case.. and wow! 2 chest! Woot!
"Nothing we ever do on purpose will ever be as good as anything we do accidentally." This is because you can accidentally reach beyond your purposeful abilities.
Something a little horrifying occurred to me playing this the other night, one of the ingredients that pops up in recipes is "bone," which is used in soups and such - all good makes sense. Except the main source of those bones? They drop off skeleton and zombie enemies. Which strongly implies Garl's cooking up human bone broth for the solstice warriors and friends to sip to top up their HP...
See, when I went to archival school, THIS WAS WHO I WANTED TO BECOME. Realistically, it's a bunch of talking to old guys who think they know collections better than you. Sometimes you make a difference. Sometimes you begrudgingly rely on the problematic nature of the institution for funding
PLEASE DO A PART 2. I admit the start of the game, the first like hour is all exposition but now that you are in the game you gotta do at least one more. The next area and Wind Boss will FREAK YOUR BEANS! Its so good!
I’m a Canadian, but I live in a town that border’s Michigan. Apparently, Charlevoix is a 2.5 hour drive from here. So, now I guess I’m gonna drag a friend to see some Mushroom Houses…
Julia, you're not wrong 'chevre' means 'sheep' or 'goat', there are words too like 'mouton' and 'brebis' for male and female sheep respectively. Languages can be very all-over-the-place with animal names. But anyway you weren't wrong.
Jacob's reaction to the Archivist's speech is so lacking of the child whimsy we're kind of supposed to approach this with. That 'WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'Use magic without using magic'?! WHAT ARE YOU SAYING TO ME' is frankly hilarious.
Yeah x) The intent was something like "Found your own _I am no man!_ moment, and you'll be able to defeat the baddies." and they steered _hard_ in the unintended direction, but beautifully :')
I have to come back and praise the thumbnail once again, I've seen it on my feed multiple times and it keeps making me chuckle 😄J&J have perfect thumbnail faces and the final edit is just 😘👌
I am sooo happy this game is getting so much love, Sabotage deserves it so much. The messenger was a masterpiece in it's genre with art and writing that made it one of my favourite indy games to date with sea of stars being such an incredible love letter to JRPGs from my childhood.
XD watching this while i ate dinner, on the couch, with a blanket, and tea. and when the first ad break started i just laughed at the accuracy of the moment.
I kept reading 'PWR 100%' as 'PLUR 100%' lmao. I was like "I don't remember what that means but I know it's a word..." I guess the mobs in this game are way into peace love unity and respect.
I have the same kind of dreams that Julia has. I had a dream the other day that there was a fraudulent charge on my hsa account. I woke up and checked my account. It's a bummer to also be stressed and responsible in your sleep too. My dad casually said to me, "you know when you're flying in your dreams?" And I was honestly so jealous. No, I only know airport dreams where I'm late for my flight. -_-
It feels like a lot of people are making Golden Sun retrospectives lately... not that I am complaining, retrospectives have been my go-to "in the background while I work" videos.
I just started started playing this game, and was scared I was going to have to stop watching half way through as to not spoil myself, but they ended right where I paused playing!!
If yall like this, you should check out Sabotage's other game The Messenger! It's the same sort of idea, but in a Ninja Gaiden/metroidvania type of genre. It's amazing and IMO the best metroidvania ever made.
I was a backer for the game back when it first appeared on kickstarter and I LOVE IT! Although some of the choices the dev team made are super baffling to me. Like not having Malkomud as a player character just seemed a bit weird considering he was shunned from his society and a magic user. A lot of the choices certain characters make are completely baffling. Also I liked Garl at first, but honestly I was ready to side with Moraine and tell him he can't come on the adventure by the time I got the 4th party member. I switched him out and genuinely forget he exists until he does something vaguely annoying.
This game reminds me of my all time favourite game secrets of grindea! Except it’s 2 player. It’s really funny and the mechanics are super smooth. It’s still technically in beta but there’s hours of gameplay to be had before you hit the unfinished stuff!! Would love to see them play it !!
Where are the fuckin OSHA requirements in this academy??? There's no bars anywhere preventing anyone from falling off. The magic folks might be able to save themselves, but what about the everyone else??
Imo this game suffers from the Chrono Trigger comparison people insist on throwing around but is -great- _fine I guess_ as its own thing... :edit to update my feelings the more of the writing I endure:
