An inherent problem with alot of arena fighters is they don't try to be competitive and they end up having no longevity cuz the game is incredibly unbalanced with little to no features. They could definitely just copy what fighting games do already ( or just make fighting games preferably) and they'd improve drastically.
XenoVerse 2 is casual focused but gets a million daily players still it's not a competitive vs casual its just a content issue the more competitive a game is the less content you can add because a lot of it wouldn't be competitive
It really feels like part of the problem with Arena fighters is publishers seem to realize people will buy it no matter what. As you pointed out these games sold extremely well despite lacking basic features, jump force in particular having a lot of elements that felt like a cash grab (lackluster story mode, limited voice acting, etc.) People vote with their wallets and what we have now is the product of years of complacency from players imo
Yup. Gamers (including me in that category) are awful when it comes to voting with wallet. Lack of discipline and patience. Thinking short term and not long term.
I’ve always loved arena fighters. Not only are they a lot of fun, but they also allow for the spectacle that shonen anime is known for. There’s a reason why they work and why people enjoy them so much
I love arena fighters for their ability to capture the feeling of playing as a character more than 2D fighters. While I love games like fighterz, I never feel like any of the characters im controlling quite the same way I do in a game like BT3.
The fact that storm connection will not have rollback net code doesn’t mean they will not try do something about the net code, I say that because of what they tried to do with demon slayer, yes the net code was still 😗 but they did something about it instead of using the same net code as storm however this still makes me wary of the connection in storm connection (i’m buying it for the story and to play with my brothers so it doesn’t really matter either way)
One of my favorite games ever was an arena fighter. It’s the worst marvel fighting game on the PS2; Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects. It’s terribly flawed but I had a shit ton of fun with it as a kid. I’ve been in love with arena fighters ever since
As a jjk fan, I’m hoping and praying that cursed clash is going to be good. They seem to be attempting a different angle with gameplay and character design and I’m just hoping it pays off.
I like naruto storm 4 but I can't pay 60 for connection. 1-money issues. 2- no graphical improvement at all .(just colors). 3- it's storm 4 with characters dlc imo. 4- i have to see if the story mode is good , or other modes. 6- I'm not a heavy online players so playing with siblings or friends is all i can do. If you like the game enjoy there's nothing wrong with playing something you like
I always thought it was time that was the issue. mk11 took 4 years to make and storm 4 took 2 so storm is gonna be missing some features that mk has because they had less time to make the game.
i haven't watched the video yet, but the thing that all these problems stem from is BANDAI NAMCO, ultimate lazy company, has all the anime game rights just pumps out a game every year, don't even get me started on tekken and their more traditional fighters and how many things are missing in those games also.
I think there is also a tempering of expectations required. Most arena fighters are mechanically shallow from the foundation, with characters that have homogeneous playstyles and little to no skill required to perform the moves and combos, which is what makes them so accessible and popular. They're easy to pick up and play. Expecting such games to have the balance of a real fighting game is kind of a lost cause because they lack the mechanical depth for the changes to even make a shift towards more positive game balance, lest they sacrifice on anime accuracy and spectacle, and ease of play, which are the big reasons people play these games. This doesn't mean that such games don't deserve proper, basic lobby functions that not just fighting games, but really any video game played online has. You pay 70 dollars for these games, and you deserve to have functioning lobbies with spectator modes and rematch options (fuck you Jump Force). The ideal future would be if the devs and publishers went closer to a Kill la Kill IF route, as that is one of the only arena fighters that feels truly designed with competitive balance in mind. But unfortunately that game didn't sell well at all, and was basically DOA, and I had trouble getting matches in the first month. Add to that the actual effort and money required to make AND support + balance a game with individual unique characters, there is no way IP holders are ever going to go that route to making better arena fighters when they already KNOW that anime fans will just shell out $70 for a mediocre game with no depth, as proved by the 12,000,000 copies of Storm 4 sold. They just have no incentive to improve. Not as long as we keep supporting their output as is.
Competetive players are not the Audience the Arena fighter developers care for, they want the casuals that are easy to catch by things like good graphics or big rosters instead of good gameplay a variety of modes and good online
Storm 4 is trash I stopped playing when they nerfed all the little Uchiha they took the ability of their sharingan awakening away so picture playing with a jinchuriki or shisui or madara and when you go tailed beast or perfect susanno BUT you can't use any of its abilities or powers so I'm out until they fix it
This. I really want to be grateful to Japan for the entertainment they bring us knowing its their whole decision on this stuff but that regional barrier snuffs out so much potential in what can be created and distributed. Japan is wildly exclusive but theres alot of people who dont know this and wonder why certain things dont happen for the anime community when they were absolutely sure it would.
I think there's a huge fear of innovation when it comes to arena Fighters and I would blame it on the fact that most of them come from the same publisher and developers. These games have been around for a while and somehow this subgenre of fighting games is still very young because it never evolved since the Naruto storm era outside of some games being slight variations of that formula. Kill Lal Kill if was not perfect but it showed an untapped potential for this genre. There's nothing that prevents these games from using more advanced combo systems, movement or defense, but it takes new developers to try things out. Similar to how classic Fighting games themselves were very afraid of trying things out until 2020 and now the genre is popping off.
I just gotta say Globku’s videos are top notch. Like I’m not just trying to gas up or anything but I been thinking this for a while now. The standard of high quality videos and engaging dialogue throughout the video paired with great editing is fantastic for viewers. Kudos to the whole team behind this channel. Definitely deserves more subs and views in my opinion. Keep it up!
It still just blows my mind that Connections doesn't have friend invites. It sounds like the most dumbest decision. If they are this incompetent, I fear for the future of the game.
Kill la Kill was proof that Arena Fighters Can be so much more of a competitive experience Storm 4 and Demon Slayer as Well But they just aren’t as respected as a 2D fighters
We're definitely getting there though, if anything Kill la Kill's making quite the rounds in the FGC's BYOC/side tournament areas (Granted the fan patch helped) and even if it combines 2D and 3D Pokkén Tournament is well respected as well, it's just hard to setup because you need 2 Switch consoles for a single setup Realistically we just need the one game to pull off the idea of a balanced arena fighter with deep movement, offensive and defensive mechanics and solid online... (and LAN play if that applies) And I honestly think BT4 could be that game, but afte FighterZ the ideal scenario would probably be "Jump Force but, like, good and without the MVCI artstyle"
@@MathiasWolfbrok Even that artstyle would be fine IMO, there just needs to be better CAC customization and a better story mode. Then again, I'm biased towards CACs, so what do I know?
Are you srs??? I was for sure they would be smart enough to put roll back in there smh. I cant play that anymore of that horrible Storm 4 online. That shit was so bad lol. Same with Hinokami chronicles. Roll back should be standard now at this point.
No rollback , the garbage roster and rehashed campaign isn't an incentive to buy , and CC2 continues to show how incapable they are as devs by lacking basic online functionality and features at launch.
Arena Fighters as a whole definitely deserve to level up and become greater than they've ever been. The missing standard features and lack of continued support has been a major obstacle in maintaining game interest and longevity for some of the games we love.
I agree with you on this. Competitive fighters and arena brawlers seem to be trying to completely opposite things and that's okay! But for some reason players want to act like their game is mechanically deep and has an actual competitive pedigree when they were created with the intention that the same base character can be copy-pasted with different looking attacks for spectacle and flourish. Both types of games have a place. But you can't expect a game to also have all the cutscenes, flourish, 100 characters and also be easy to pick up and play while ALSO being competitive, deep and have every fighter be unique.
I mostly think because of the way the FGC views arena fighters and the lack of a true AAA anime game experience, we want that. It's not easy to find that balance between accessible and competitive. I mostly agree that there's nothing wrong with the game just being what it is, but none of the arena fighters outside of Dragon Ball and Naruto have great track records. Ultimately, I think we're just looking for something that'll have legs (i.e. like SF and MK)
@@theflashfan3234 you say the words out of my mouth, I believe arena fighters isn't just cash grabs either, it's games for casuals to pick up and play for a few matches with friends... Even though you can't in Storm Connection (seriously that's dumb) I am not saying people are wasting time trying to make it competitive, because something as casual as smash bros can be super competitive, but it works because Sakura (the director) knows the competitive and dedicated players side of smash for years at this point. But with Bandi or some other company making these arena fighters, it's clear these games are just made for casuals first and that's it.
I think there are two main reasons for this 1. Anime fans often have a limited choice when it comes to games, forcing them into buying a subpar product in order to play a game with their favourite characters. 2. A lot of anime fans prioritise Single-player, casual online and local multiplayer modes over the ranked/competitive multiplayer scene, meaning that developers are more likely to invest their funds in the former over the latter
Arena fighters dont improve because they dont have to. Even a bad one doesnt really tarnish an animes brand. Id argue if one sold poorly, the license holder probably wouldnt improve the product , theyd probably just sell off the license and not make another and risk more loss. The business model is built on easy return which runs counter to sweeping improvements. It would take a passionate team like in the case of dbfz to improve the end product or the franchise owner having some standard of quality that must be met. Outside of that improvement is just going to be slow. I think as more people implement things like rollback, it will get easier to add into a game and they will just do that for easy extra sales because they hear the feedback, they juet arent going to add it when the cost to benefit dont match up. There are very few games in a 3d space with rollback and i doubt a anime arena fighter is going to be the space to innovate.
I genuinely believe that the higher ups understand that anime fans will just buy whatever they send out. Its profitable to give the game longevity but it's MORE profitable to save a ton of money, throw out something half baked, and just add DLC later. I mean, what type of competition do arena fighters have? They have zero incentive to make the games good. Anime fans need some self control and stop buying products that are obviously designed in a way that mocks us. Cant even invite friends to play? In 2023? That's beyond disrespectful.
the reason why arena fighters are not suited to be competitive because their gameplay is quite easy and does not require any execution and are made for casual anime fans unlike fighting games like tekken which require heavy execution and you have to learn every character which has +100 moves to be able to play the game properly and thats why its the biggest game in the competitive side
09:28 - Actually no, that wasn't Toei, it was Shueisha that tried to cancel the tournies, even the title of the article says that it's the community that blamed Toei, but there was not the case. Also at 10:31 the list isn't accurate, as Mortal Kombat 9 sold way more than 3 million, Ed Boon confirmed that MK9, MKX and MK11 sold better than any other MK game, so it can't be that MK Deadly Alliance sold 3.5 million while MK9 sold only 3 million, and MK Vs. DC Universe sold 4 million copies, not just 1.8 million. And also Jump Force soled 10 million copies, not just 5.12 million. This wiki site isn't legit dude.
I will never believe in arena fighters until we get a game that is not tied to some franchise and made by people that know what the fuck they are doing. I like the concept of arena fighters but they are always seem like jank without depth which doesn't give them longevity that standard fighters have.
I'm a big jjk fan, and I remember going on reddit and seeing how many fans were unhappy to have the series be made into an arena fighter. I played the MHA game by Byking to try to get a feel for how they'd make it. I liked everything besides playing online. The game feels very clunky so playing it competitively isn't fun, but I do think it's worth making the anime games for casual fans. I'm a casual fighting game player so I could care less about if it's competitive or not.
dissidia was also area game that did lot to improve the concept of a arena fighter with wall running, area remixing and the brave system encouraging finishers.
Its super simple for me. I vote with my wallet. If the new storm is releasing with such low content and feautures, to the point you cant even play with your fking friends, then its a no buy for me. Other players should vote with their wallet.
I genuinely believe the blog post detailing all the modes was just translated wrong, i dont think they would release the game with no way to invite your friends but i could be wrong. See yall in november
It's translated to English for a reason, and if so, won't cc2 damage control or correct that shit by now. I don't think so, mate. It's no mistake It's reality!
@@Criticmasterz People said that about this game having no new mechanics as well, we won't know until the full game is in our hands. They may even retroactively add it in after seeing the feedback. Stay positive but realistic, see yall in November 👋
@GhostNishiki True, but cc2 needs to give a press release or say it's our bad because they fucked up in message again we know how bad Marketing connections has. So it's up cc2 to add it but I don't see them adding until 3-9 months in.
Great video! Really interesting insights on the arena fighting competitive scene. 0 damage draws is wild. I'm working on an arena fighting game myself, so I'm definitely taking notes from this
The reason I have practically have no enthusiasm to play arena fighters is that, 1 they feel like cash grabs, 2 most of the mechanics and tracking just feel sluggish and awkward, and 3 they are just unbalanced. And not to mention a lot of these games really dont come with a ton of content. Burning blood had practically nothing other than the story mode.
@@DeiZeiga Yes that seems to be the common consensus, but I personally really liked NT, it brought Yoshitaka Amanos art to modern graphics, I also liked the roster and overall gameplay ( not saying it's perfect) but I really liked it for what it is, and not what I wanted it to be
I need casual players to help me with this, you guys are right to not care about balancing because it doesn't interest you. But is there really any reason to be against the game being balanced competitivly when it all comes down to is adjusting some frames or adding some moves? Neither you nor your opponents are doing optimal gameplay you're just hitting some buttons and having the time of your day so it shouldn't be affecting your life no? Correct me if I'm wrong
Right. For "Budokai Tenkaichi 4" especially i don't care about balance. I just want a fun experience. It'll be more fun if it has a proper lobby system to invite friends over to play. That should be bare minimum
4:22 “This has been going on for months” Glob your amazing for these vids but this has been going on since SHE RELEASED!! I remember being the first vocal person to say how completely unbalanced she was around the first few weeks of her release but no one listened bcuz she wasn’t being abused yet. People didn’t start realizing her overpowered busted potential until about a year ago but I have been saying she is the most busted character in the game, above Akaza, for years. The fact that characters like these are made in these game’s completely make me not purchase the game entirely. Zero balance towards her since day 1.
@Globku arena fighters just not the SAME as 2d fighters i feel like you should just stop trying to compare the two because its only hurting the arena fighter genre and bandai is only making it worse.
Anime arena fighters have had pretty much no significant changes in over a decade. Fighting games have had many significant changes. These are two very different cultures and audiences, fighting games are pretty much DOA if they don’t innovate and interest player bases with something new. You have to realize most FGs don’t have major IPs attached to them, a lot of them are niche games. It doesn’t matter for an anime arena game because they’re gonna make their money back, and two, they’re gonna do the same exact thing for another game like a year or two later. They’re also just not the same type of game, we don’t call anime arena games fighting games for a reason. And it’s not that anime games are designed for casuals(Smash is designed for casuals), it’s just the nature of the games. Anime games are VERY mashy games, there’s nothing really to learn in many of those games that changes the way the game is played, or varies the way you play from others. They simply just don’t feel like fighting games, something like smash accidentally became a fighting game because it felt like a fighting game, it has foundational elements like neutral, combos(as in, not mashing 2 buttons), a strong connection between the player base and the devs(actual competitive community). Anime arena games are only vaguely similar to FGs, if we’re splitting hairs. That is to say, it’s hilarious to see people expect things from FGs to be mirrored in anime arena fighters. Those are not fighting game developers making those games and they’re not trying to make a fighting game, what they do is enough as proven by the fact that nothing has changed in years and 3 or 4 come out every year or two.
Man the lies here bruh 😂😂😂😂 Storm 4, Tenkaichi 4(T3 Mod), and One's Justice 2 totally debunk your little criticism, These so called traditional fighters are vastly overrated, as an avid longtime fan and player of Tekken, honestly I can bet my family jewels that you 2 people who have never played a fighting game before in their lives can have a reasonably decent match with a simple competent understanding of how to block(since all moves in Tekken are just broken throws, charge moves, and unnecessary situational moves and 10 hit combos that you'll never land or use). Button mashing is what you do in fighting games period, you're playing a game not writing a damn composition get over yourselves. Lastly, Tenkaichi in general has much more depth than any fighting game in flight mechanics alone, add in the melee and other offensive and defensive tech with adequate blast 1/2/ ultimate blast usage and you have a fighting experience that the FGC is too proud too admit is the best
There need to be more of these types of fighting games. But they need to be done right and more fun into them. Not into side step/ 2D fighting games much.
it still shocks me how many people say "oh hell yeah Budokai Tenkaichi, that's my jam, BT3 is the best DB game ever, I'm a big Tenkaichi fan" but once a tournament rolls around, it gets the least views and has the smallest prize pool, I appreciate those who did watch and those who did contribute and attend, but something is telling me half of all the people hyping SZ on twitter have never actually given a single shit about the games
Really good points bro. Idk if any of the next 3d arena games are gonna change this...Naruto seems like a very litle maybe but like you say no lobbys for even friends lol bad move, JJK looks like something different but we still dont know and Tenkaichi its way in the future still so i guess all we can do its pray and hope xD thanks for the video it was really fun and a good topic maybe follow up with another one in the future talking more about others things that are missing in 3d arena games.
My little rant(forgive me Globku 😁😁😁😁) I feel as through Arena fighters are vastly underrated in general and that the Traditional fighters are overrated in comparison to them. Seriously anyone who has played games like Tenkaichi 3(flight mechanics alone, any other fighting game) Storm 4, One's Justice 2, or even Feudal Combat can see that these games not only have very in depth and (mostly) fair mechanics overall, they follow the source material excellently(nitpicks, corporate greed, and bad player feedback aside) especially more in recent years, as were seeing a golden age of all these games in their variety. I'm very much looking forward to Cursed Clash as being new to the Bunch, I'm not letting my ideal expectations supercede corporate greed, and frankly it my feel bare minimum CONTENT wise, it still is exceptional in every other area, especially gameplay, at its core. Naturally online would be the main issue for overall functionality and longevity but outside of that and content we'll be set. I love and respect TF outta Tekken and other Traditional fighters(MVC, SF, GG, MK, SC, etc...)but they have their limitations compared to the ones I've mentioned, and are just more fun. And aren't fighting games are button masters(MASHERS) anyways🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
4:00 Although it wasn't this extreme, I remember something similar happening to Pokken when it got it's time in the spotlight. I think it was 2 japanese players who were able to exploit everyone else's lack of familiarity with Zoning, going up against each other and having a slow passive match. The thing is Pokken I'm pretty sure got balancing patches in addition to Pokken DX to try and course correct, and it sounds like demon slayer just... didn't.
@@Globku Can you make video on characters that you think are getting a brand new second jutsu and those who aren’t, for example will Pain still able to do universal pull or will Jonin Minato keep his tilt😅.
Mortal Kombat as an Arena Fighter would be so great but there has to be all the necessary elements. Good story, good matchmaking with rollback netcode, good fighting this is top priority imo. Very different stages (maybe like duel mode from Star Wars battlefront 2) and good dlc content.
If anyone buys storm connections on release your insane. CC2 has Ben fumbling the bag taking features AWAY for like 4 games in a row now. Not even having PRIVATE MATCH is absurd and they not getting my money until it’s added
My issue with modern arena fighters is not adapting the source material well. It’s like the devs said “let’s make an arena fighter. Who should be playable?” And then add characters/stages from the source. But core fighting systems and lore are otherwise non-existent. Storm in my opinion is the biggest offender in this area. Easiest example is how Sage Mode Naruto can recharge chakra just like everyone else. Literally zero adaptation with how Sage mode worked in the source material. GNT SP isn’t perfect (Sage mode is op). But props for at least trying to adapt it to the source material, even when unbalanced as hell.
I mean to be fair when you have over 100 characters in your roster it becomes hard to justify making an entirely Unique charging Mechanic for 3 characters when the universal option just works better
I have a Video Idea for you: Beat dbz kakarot + dlc's in the right time order That means First up is dlc 4 with bardock , then dlc 5 with kid/teen goku , then the main story to just bevore trunks arrives , then dlc 3 until he beats the cyborgs , then the main story until cell is defeated , then dlc 3 to the end i guess (i forgot if his story then plays matter from the main story), then main story to the end and then dlc 1 and dlc 2
For me its also style, demon slayer looks great but the rest of them look meh. They dont pop like fighterz or guilty gear. Yeah the storm supers look cool but the lenght is a problem. Connenctions and that new jjk game so far are looking rlly bland
Kill La Kill IF is so slept on... it has competitive depth in spades, but everyone plays the other games & idk why. But also I think people neglected it on release due to Arena Fighter Stigma or whatever. It makes me sad tbh
Playing with friends (Yes it hasn't happen) but playing with another (with offline friend) in offline that has happen. In first Street Fighter V has no offline playing and it is little like the Storm Connection thing.
Can't tell you Glob these companies keep exploiting the consumers they know even with little effort it will sell and bring them triple what they invested. Why would they care about competitive scenes when how they have been doing it all the time is still working. Among the casuals, anime just has too much influence they will buy it regardless. Same shit with Pokemon all their games have been problematic for a while now but they still hit huge numbers in sales everytime.
Honestly Dragonball fighters and arena fighters will all feel the same because of the auto combo system, with all honesty If you had fighting games like tekken or BlazBlue central fiction, maybe any of the guilty gear series games, you can see a heavy night and day difference on the arena fighters and 2D/3D fighters. And I mean by gameplay, like how they feel in controls everything else I understand whole heartly
@@ektran4205 if you wanna know what are considered 2.5D those games are, guilty gear xrd/strive, street fighter 4,5 and 6, mortal Kombat from mk9-mk1 which releases tomorrow. 3D games are Tekken, virtua fighters, dead or alive. These 3 games represent 3D fighters. Arena fighters are the storm games, xenoverse, and demon slayer.
To me arena fights are not bad like to me I think my hero was the first one that made feel like I could take it seriously a bit I just wish anime games had more players because in most games if you touch rank and to high lv you get kicked a bunch or the person leaves that was my issue with Naruto Storm 4 and demon slayer
