Yeah there's a lot to learn from Firas. Having mentors is absolutely crucial for any man, even if you have your father in your life. Your father might be a good man but terrible at communication.. Also, you need different mentors for different domains of your life whether it's business, career, fitness, family etc etc. Your father might be a good family man but terrible at business and fitness. You get my point. Ideally, you'd want to spend time with the people whom you're trying to learn from because humans learn much better from direct experience than through a medium. However, the second best thing is to study them through whichever mediums are available to you.

This is the most realistic, on point, honest, real take on success ever uttered out loud. It´s ridiculous how some people claim everybody can be world champions, it´s just not possible for people who were born on the wrong side of the bell curve. Everybody at the top trains hard so talent becomes the dividing line. Find what you are good at naturally then go all out with that.

I’m currently playing semi professional soccer on the border line of professional. This is real. Someone I know was elite but they didn’t work hard and now don’t play soccer anymore. Whilst me on the other hand sacrifice party life in order to be whiskers away from the professional level. If he had the same work ethic, he would dust me for good and take my spot of possibly be professional. Bell curve is real, man.

Okay so I’m a washed up old guy now but I played college football, WR, I’m 5’11 with a 78 inch reach and have short, stocky legs, 28.5 inch inseam. I love the body type discussions. I remember hearing about Michael Phelps and how he was “born to swim” because of his unique build. So I’ve always wondered if I just grew up in the wrong place, a small town in the upper Midwest, and wasn’t exposed to the right sport. In the town I’m from it’s basically Football and Wrestling. And wrestling was like it’s own world. You had to have started young or come from a wrestling family. I was a poor kid from a trailer park, so football/basketball was it. Sports I’m naturally good at: Football, sprinting, swimming, deadlifting, got into boxing and Muay Thai a little, loved the drills but I’ve already taken enough hits to the head, tennis is the sport I really wonder if I could have been good at. But where I’m from nobody plays it. Sports I suck at: anything throwing lol. I don’t have much of an arm. I wasn’t awful at discus. Distance running. I’m trying to qualify for the Boston marathon and it’s damn hard when you have short heavy legs lol. I bring this up because now everyone is talking about Volk and how his body type, long reach, short powerful legs, is such an advantage. This is contrary to what most people talk about when discussing “athletic” builds. You generally want a taller guy with long legs to generate more power. Longer levers have potential for more power. Anyway I just it’s interesting that when you have a great athlete, they’ll say it’s his body type that his a huge factor in his greatness but they’ll say the same thing when another athlete who has a totally different body type becomes great. You just gotta learn your strengths and learn how to apply them to the fight, the game, the race etc

Firas, salaams. I love you man. I’m a middle-aged Chinese, American Muslim in California, I’ve been training jujitsu on and off for many years and I still suck and that is fine, I’m driving there right now and listening to your great RU-vid messages while driving. I do a lot of mentoring and lead a youth group of teenage young men. Allow me to give you some food for thought. Most of success is not from natural talent or propensity, but from Hardwork. I’m sure you read Malcolm Gladwell‘s outliers, where he specifically, in an academic setting, sought to find, natural genius or natural ability among the highest performers in a given field, say music or hockey. While there is no doubt that some people are born with that natural advantage to varying degrees, his research shows that the actual determining factor of the vast vast majority of those who are at the highest levels in their field directly correlates with the number of hours they put in to training. So when we tell young people, and our children, that they are so good at math or so good at wrestling, we are actually praising the wrong thing. Because in reality, it is their hard work, commitment, consistency, and grit that will determine their success in anything, and that effort is what we need to be praising. So that was my first thought, that the emphasis on finding natural ability might be miss placed, because as things actually occur in society and nature, our success in anything as humans does not truly depend on natural ability, but rather the qualities I mentioned above surrounding hard work and consistency, and grit. My second point is for you to consider whether we should be bound by our biological and predetermined abilities. Do those natural abilities form the best basis for where we focus our efforts in life? Consider the argument that the answer is no. I might be best, biologically, at holding my breath, underwater, and being a sort of diver. Does that mean my mission in life should be to be the best diver? It’s certainly helpful to consider that, but what if I want to be a physician or a scholar or a veterinarian? My position is that we have a choice, and if we can work hard, something, we can achieve reasonable success in whatever we wish. I might have been good at math and high school and everyone might have said wow you should be a mathematician or professor or an accountant. Great. But I don’t want to do that. I want to be some thing that may be, biologically, I am only at the 25th percentile in terms of natural ability, but with Hardwork, I can be among the best physicians in the world, and even that comparison, that relative achievement, may not even matter. So long as I become a physician who is doing a good job for their patients, does it matter if I am at the 85th percentile or 99th percentile? I would say that it doesn’t matter. The struggle to become an elite MMA fighter has a set of principles that do not actually apply well to most things in life where we can achieve great success in many areas, regardless of our inherent abilities. Thanks again for all your wisdom and stimulating videos on RU-vid, Allah bless you and your family.

salam brother. great comment. i would say its a combination of this: what do love/like doing? you have to like something so much you want to go to the nth-end to get better. passion i think, is very, very important. its a lot easier to have grit and do hard work, when you enjoy something. what do you think?
@GigaFloyd
@GigaFloyd Год назад
Salam brother, irregardless of "hardwork and grit," genetics plays a defining role in success in every aspect of life. The hard work of a 5'5 ju-jitsu black belt can not eclipse the hard work and genetic advantage of another ju-jitsu blackbelt who happens to be 6'3.
@adambenwang
@adambenwang Год назад
@@GigaFloyd I agree with you, but the next question is - should the 5 foot 5 guy have given up BJJ as a blue belt when he realized that he is not genetically optimized for elite success ? Because that is my point: if he loves BJJ enough, he won't care that he is not genetically optimized for BJJ, he should work hard and may still achieve a large degree of success in the sport, whether that's defined by being a black belt or winning tournaments. I think you agree with me, that if he loves BJJ, he should be encouraged to train hard and keep showing up. And that is my point. If his genetics favor him to become a world champion at BJJ, he should train hard and keep showing up. If his genetics do not favor him, he should also train hard and keep showing up. Should we only channel our efforts into things we can achieve elite top 1% status, e.g. olympic level or UFC level ? I don't think so. If we love something, we should work hard and go for it. My genetics might make me suited to be a champion bread-baker, but say I don't want to bake bread? I want to be a physician and became the best one I can be, even if I'm not genetically suited to be in the top 1% of physicians.
@GigaFloyd

@adambenwang now you're changing my example in order to answer a question I previously answered, brother. It is really this simple, your genetics determine your natural limit, whether that be physical or mental. This is a really nuanced and complicated topic, but from my limited understanding, although genetics can be mutated and manipulated to an extent depending on the genome, they can not be to the point where it causes drastic difference in performance (unless gene editing is done at an early stage think CRISPR). To go back to the topic, though, nowadays, people are lazy, careless, and uneducated, so if you put in the effort, you will be rewarded with what you desire as long as it is realistically attainable. A 5'3 man can not compete at the highest levels of basketball, such as the NBA simply because the competition has vastly superior physical genetic advantages that allow them to perform at that level in their environment. Many aspiring basketball players have tried to replicate Micheal Jordans' training regimen with varying degrees of success but no athlete since his time period has achieved the same level of greatness as he has. However, im not some eugenicest who believes in genetic superiority many people attribute a large part of Micheal's success to his "intangibles" even people who on paper have way better basketball genetics can not compete with him even now due to said "intangibles" so it is not entirely out of the question and sometimes even common for someone who may look physically weaker than the opponent to come out on top. Think underdogs on fight cards or David vs. Goliath, the point is that looks can be deceiving. However, this is not common, and when things like this do occur, they are exceptions to the rule. That's about all I can say on this topic, akhi. I hope it helped you understand.

whats the inherent thing/features about a person that makes you think 'Wow he's in that top 0.01% of the good side', Like what specifically about a person (physically and mentally) makes you say 'I could make him into the world champion with ease'. I really hope that you see this comment, this type of thing is what I'm super interested in.

Coach, I have a question, how many talents does it take to be a UFC champion? Or is fighting itself a uniform talent, or can it be divided into several talents?

I often wonder what the highest belt is that everybody can achieve in BJJ, i've been thinking about this question for years. You can't really ask black belts this question, because they always think that because they've done it, everybody should be able to do it. My instinct is that even with enough hard work and dedication that its not the black belt, because i think there is a certain amount of natural talent/physical ability required to progress past your peers in the middle stages. My impression has always been that its purple, or maybe early stage brown.

@@vermidian_ That the next amicable pair has 5 digits and the way I was searching wouldn't find it even after running for hours maybe? My naive algorithm wouldn't give me any thing except the 3 digit pairs in a reasonable time.
