So interesting. Love the story on the HoneyCrisp, had no idea. Also, and more important to me, I finely know why myself and others have been complaining about the CosmicCrisp taste. The first one I tried was so bad, I couldn't believe it. I couldn't imagine all the attention for an apple that makes you pucker and spit it out.. It stood to reason that something was wrong or happened, no one would market an apple like this. NO ONE ! I figured that the growers just picked them too early. In the video, Mr. Tamsen starts talking about one of the problems of CosmicCrisp ...... 22:10, (paraphrased) "When the apple comes off of the tree, it's starchy, and those starches degrade in initial storage. Those apples are not ready to eat until after initial cold storage .... so we can set a storage time to let those starches turn into sugar." Many of the CosmicCrisp are starchy and yet other apples come out stunning. Your trademark quality rules need to be tightened up. Oh my gosh, I feel vindicated. That apple sucks about half the time. What is going on?

Great feedback Jeff! The cosmic crisp apples that I have had were yummy but that was late winter. But honey crisp? I haven’t had a good one for years now. It’s not that they are bad. They are just nothing special…

@@Orchardpeople - Sorry that it's off topic ..... but I was doing back- somersaults when he talked about the starch issue of CosmicCrisp. I knew exactly what he was saying from my experience, and we did have some that "ripened up" after a month in the refrigerator. We have found some amazing CosmicCrisp apples. Back story, I have heard wine drinkers talk about the "overtone" taste of certain wines. I am not a wine drinker but I always thought that this was suspicious .... so when people similarly talked about the CosmicCrisp, I thought they were nut jobs as well, lol. Well, I had my first experience of this very issue with several of the CosmicCrisp apples. It took me by surprise..... but I tasted several different tastes.... not sure what it was but it was so good. We buy a bag here and there, but most of them have a horrible starch taste to them. In an attempt to correct them, we place them in the fridge for a month or more. That has worked in the past, but not this year. We are batting zero for a good CosmicCrisp from the 2023 season. We throw a lot of apples in the garbage. Sad. We don't buy apples, other than CosmicCrisp. The apples at the store are pathetic . . . and CosmicCrisp may be the worst of them all because it's mostly not edible (it's a wonder they are in business). One bite and I know what is going on. I grow apples at home and we just eat what I grow, seasonally. Winners are CrimsonCrisp, KinderCrisp, Triumph, Zestar!, Ripe Braeburn, and ripe GrannySmith (our season is not long enough to get these last two to ripen up, but when they do, they are fabulous. Concerning CosmicCrisp patents, why can't growers outside of Washington just pay a royalty fee? Boom, everyone is happy.

@@jeffnielsen4057 What you say does match my experience a bit. First time I tasted Cosmic Crisp I loved it! Then next year..."Meh". And by the way, they are working on licensing outside of Washington I think! I'm also unimpressed with supermarket apples! Hope grown is the way to go!

I am not so sure on this one. First, if you had heirloom apples, they were probably fresh out of orchard. That's not a fair comparison to store bought apples (which on average, are 13 months old !). Furthermore, I want a lot of things that the new apples bring us. Longer, better storage, less bruising during shipping, a higher packout, and a hard crunchy apple. Also disease resistance, fire blight resistance and the list goes on. Gosh, and you have to wonder about people ability to test apples and come up with Red Delicious being a "good apple." That's just people eating with their eyes, nothing about taste. I think RD is still in the top 5 of apple sales in the USA, and number 1 in foreign countries.

@@jeffnielsen4057 I've heard the original RD was really tasty. Then people just "remember" it's supposed to be good. That's one variety I absolutely NEVER buy.

@@Orchardpeople - ANYTHING but a red delicious. My mom's RD sucked too. I grew three varieties at my home for 10 years .... they sucked no matter when you picked them. The guy who taught me to graft 35 years ago said, "No self-respecting orchardist would grow a RD." He was so right !!
