I keep my pond sliders outside in spring/summer in the Netherlands. But when there is a colder period I bring them back in. I put a pond basin on my balcony with rocks so they can go in and out and choose whether to sunbath or swim. They really enjoy sunny days, which also allows them to get real sun UV light vitamins. I saw a video of someone here in NL who kept sungazers outside except for the colder parts of the year.

I live in England and similar to Canada keeping animals outdoors has additional challenges but I have a summer outdoor set up for my musk turtle. I have a friend who keeps a species of beauty snake outside all year round with hibernaciulums and insulation and they thrive. The benefits of outdoor reptile keeping outweighs the negatives and I’m looking into how I can make an all year turtle set up and what other reptiles may work well in our cooler climates or climates with big seasonal shifts at least.

You can expand the season in places that have wide ranges of day to night temps by putting heated houses/hides in the outdoor enclosures if you set it to only turn on below 15°c or so it doesnt cost much to run and reduces outdoor anxiety and labour having to bring them in and out.

I live in upstate NY (not far from Southern ontario) and I used to keep my Jackson's chameleons outside in the summer. They didn't even really need an enclosure if I monitored them, I had a potted tree and chameleons won't go down to the ground and walk away on the ground. Obviously I didn't leave them in the potted tree unattended so a hawk or something g could get them...granted not sure many upstate NY hawks have seen chameleons before...

Let me ad those Species, which are Outdoor-hardened and roam freely here in Germany: Only native Turtle is the Species Emys Orbicularis, can survive harsh Winters in a deeply frozen Pond, very solid Species! In Terms of Lacerta, the Lacerta Agilis is very hardy too, much more than the bigger Ones. Lacerta bilineata and their Variations are all way more hardy than the jewelled Lacerta (Timon Lepidus). But there is also the Species Zootica Vivipara, small but very stable and productive...thrives in almost any Environment! Many People also keep them Greek Tortoises (Testudo) outside until the Winter comes. And last----but never least: I have to mention my Slowworms again!

There are cold areas of Australia that drop below freezing and still heaps of reptile species. Goodluck getting most or any of them outside of Australia though if you don't run a zoo. Southern and eastern bluetongues are probably your best bet. They bromate in winter as long as they have a burrow or hide that stays abovw freezing they could happily survive outside from spring to late autumn (fall) in north America. Make sure you know for a fact that you have a species native to Victoria, South Australia or Tasmania. Tropical species will not survive but southern and common Australian bluetongues will be happy in wide range of tenperatures and humidities, they are extremely hardy and much tougher than their Tropical cousins. I live in their native range and I see them in my garden all the time including in winter if it's a bit warmer. There's also the gippsland water dragon that lives in a temperate climate that would survive fine outside as long as they had shelter from below freezing conditions. I doubt there are many if any at all outside of Australia as even in Australia they are hard to get and require special licensing. There are multiple skink and gecko species that live in these climates too. But the biggest number of temperate and cold climate reptiles of southern Australia and Tasmania are Elapids. Aside from being very hard to get many of these snakes make it into the top 10 in the world for venom potency lol. Red belly Black Snakes, Australian copperheads, Tigersnakes and eastern Brown snakes all tolerate cold climates. Aside from the eastern brown they will even tollerate very cold climates if they are descendants of the tasmanian sub species. Red bellies would be your best bet. They are very docile (unless antagonised) and are the only common snake around here that some herps even free handle wild specimens. They are also the least venomous and you have a decent chance of surviving a bite without getting antivenom. Copperheads are less chill and more likely to kill you without medical help. Tigersnakea are incredibly hardy snakes, but can be pretty deffensive and absolutely will kill you without immediate medical attention and brown snakes are even more toxic and are extremely skittish, easily startled and I'm told they are hard to care for. They do tollerate cooler climates though....

Nice to see some chelonians make an appearance in your video. 🐢 It has been majority snakes and lizards thus far. 🐍🦎 Most Canadians are very used to only keeping reptiles indoors because of how long and cold winters are in most of the country. 🥶❄ I would personally keep mine indoors too, but as you say, there is nothing wrong with keeping them outdoors IF done correctly. ☀
@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws
@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws Год назад
I would have thought it would be better for them outside, it's hot in Canada and if 10° C is your cut off I could probably make a decent sized outdoor enclosure and keep something outside it hardly goes below 20° C here in London and even in Scotland it's been warmer year on year. I haven't owned a reptile, other than birds but I mean endothermic reptiles I would love one and I think if it had a big summer enclosure I would feel better about having one. I have a ton of learning to do before I even consider what I want and, if its better to start small and indoors, so be it. I think the animals welfare and happiness is the overriding concern.
