Thank you Thank you Thank you. I finally understand why my knits do not fit. It all makes sense now! Cup size always a B. I am a D cup so now I know to knit the size based on 32.5” above my bust line! This is a game changer!!!
The half-bust measurement is also useful. The sleeves of a top-down sweater are assumed to be at the midpoint of the stitches. That is perfect for a person with a 36-in bust who measures 18 across the front and the back. But if a woman has a 36-in. bust and is 22 inches across the front but only 14 inches across the back would find the sweater stretching across the front and baggy across the back. Perhaps the sleeves should not be centered for that woman.
Wow! I’m a brand new knitter. Went from knitting a couple of headbands to a sleeveless sweater with a cowl neck. I like to run before I can walk lol. It came out nice with a few mistakes. Did a lot of intentional practice rip out practice rip out again before I ventured into the real thing. It was going to be too small for me but it fit my 20 something daughter to a tee and she loves it. I lucked out. This video of yours is superb! I can’t tell you how grateful I am that I spotted it on you tube and decided to watch. You have a wonderful way of creating a picture in my mind of everything you just taught. I am beyond thrilled to have learned so much prior to my future endeavors of knitting sweaters, which is my goal. You are so pleasing to watch how you explain everything. I love your personality. Thank you again for sparing me what I think would be a lot of frustration😀

this is fabulolus!! I just made 2 sweaters to my bust measurement and they are more blanket than sweater. Couldn't figure out what I did wrong. THANK YOU!!!!
This was extremely helpful! I’m a fairly new sweater knitter and I hadn’t thought about measuring upper bust, but that makes so much sense hearing you discuss it so thoroughly!
I’ve struggled with getting the right size for me in both crocheting and no knitting. They always wind up too big, because my bust is much larger than my waist. Ty for this video! It’s so helpful.
Wonderful discussion, Ellen! I quickly found that if I aimed for a measurement between my full bust and upper bust, it gave me a better fit for my summer knit tops. Thanks for all of your wonderful suggestions! Risa
Thank you so much for this video. About to tackle my first sweater in the coming weeks and I knew I had to look up modifications for the bust. This confirms my suspicions since I usually wear 1X shirts and I keep finding patterns where I would end up in 3XL 😂😂. Also found other great vids on how to use short rows for this as well. Thanks!! 😊 Also thank you for the much more clear explanation on ease desribed in patterns!!
Thanks for this! Measuring the chest instead of the breast is a great idea! I’m super busty (34H) so finding a store bought sweater that looks decent on me is extremely difficult. That’s why I’m learning and working towards making my owns sweaters. 😀😀🧶
Yes, you will love making your own sweaters that fit! Let’s get you hooked up with Custom Fit for your first sweater so you don’t have to make the adjustments yourself. ❤️
