When I was a child the neighbouring farm operated a Field Marshall. Two things I'll never forget, the smell. When it was thoroughly warmed it was switched to a second fuel tank to run in paraffin (kerosene) with a very distinctive sweeter smell. It also blew perfect rising smoke rings when the air was still!

Made in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The company started back in the 1800's and made steam traction engines, the old boiler shop overlooked the church I was christened in. The factory closed in the 80's, part of it was demolished though some still remains and were turned into retail units. I spent a few years working for a local haulage company that used to deliver the Marshall products all over the UK.

I'm am glad that I saw this, it is amazing how technology has progressed over time. It would be awesome just to have a video explaining with a opened engine, how it works compared to a more modern engine. I wonder how much power some of these old tractors were capable of putting out, relying on compression and a small piece of buring paper as the primary source of potential energy is mind blowing; let alone the idea of a blank shotgun shell producing enough energy to start the engine. Thank you for posting your video, this is a unique and important innovation of history!!

Even in the 40's there were several U.S. built diesel and gasoline tractors with electric start. In fact I'm pretty sure Farmall sent some over to Europe in ww2 for road building and such. So its a mystery to me why this tractor is the way it is? Looking at American tractors that would of been more like a 1920's start up procedure, not a 1948. Although I know the 40's farmalls had both, in case the battery died you could hand crank it.
@LesAventuresDeTigRRe

@@gittyupalice96 Why? Simple: making and selling price, ease of maintenance, repair cost, and pig headed farmers who always preferred simpler/cheaper stuff.
@jonross377

@@LesAventuresDeTigRRe not to mention you could literally drop this thing in the middle of nowhere and it wouldnt matter if your battery died. I imagine the simplicity was a HUGE selling point as well. People used to fix their own stuff.

Ok so if I understand what is going on here correctly, then this “vehicle” would be completely impervious to an EMP. Yes?
@madhav5955
@madhav5955 3 года назад
Yup .
@AsiAzzy
@AsiAzzy 3 года назад
EMP? Electromagnetic pulse - so the variation of the magnetic field, induces in nearby conductors, coils, etc a variation in electrical field. If the component is very sensitive (a computer unit) to voltage, then EMP can fry the computer because of the extra induced voltage all over by the EMP. Now on cars, if an EMP would target a car, might fry various sensitive electronics, but starter and battery and alternator and those short thick wires are not going to do much in presence of EMP. Because the EMP field can only deliver a spike of voltage and low amps. Only sensitive electronics can get damaged. A car that is impervious to any EMP would be an old diesel car with injection pump (rotary or inline). The fuel system is all mecahnical, can run without battery or alternator, can be pushstarted (manual gearbox) or windup starter. I had a VW golf mk2 diesel that could run without a battery (but no headlights, signals, horn, etc). I actually drove that golf without a battery for a 300km trip (battery was shot, removed it completly and bought a new one, but in time being i had to get home, so i've push-started, drove in daylight. - back in the 90's, no DRL requirements) Anyway, EMP is not like in the movies. Most power electronics are impervious to EMP (on the scale we know now, not talking about giving a MRI to a car battery, or solar flares in the outer orbit, or other large scale of EMP energy), and small electronics are sensitive to EMP because they were not designed to cope with EMP. Harder to do, but with EMP resistence in mind it is doable to design protection accordingly (any space vehicle has a lot of protection for other induced voltages like EMP from solar flares and Roentgen induced currents from the radiation).
@cr10001
@cr10001 3 года назад
@@AsiAzzy I suspect an older petrol (gasoline) car in pre-computer days - say up till 1980 - would be pretty impervious to a moderate level of EMP also. Except maybe for the car radio. Yes it relies on electricity, but the only electronic components in it would be the capacitor in the distributor (which is designed to take electric spikes) and the diodes in the alternator (which also need to be pretty rugged). Even if the alternator died, the battery would still power the ignition. (I once drove my Ford Escort home 400km on a battery. The alternator failed one night. So next morning I bought a new battery (the old one was not only flat but fairly tired, and there was no way I could get alternator spares on a weekend) and drove home on battery only. Just made it home before the battery went flat, and just after it got dark :)
