YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS UP!!! Reacting to "Saitama vs Popeye Death Battle" 

Imagine being one of the people animating this episode and popeye just punches you.

Yeah... as soon as I saw the Popeye announcement I immediately decided he was going to win. I do like Saitama but old cartoons are ridiculously powerful. Popeye (or more specifically a parody of him) even fought and beat Superman once (albeit another parody).

This is easily the greatest "one-sided fight" Death Battle has ever done. I mean, anyone who thought Saitama ever stood a chance is smoking something, and I'm pretty sure it isn't spinach.

In the Storyboard animation when they get to the 3D fight there's just a placeholder saying "Devilartemis does some cool s***".

I honestly can't say where this death battle became my favorite. It was either when Popeye became that buff sailor man (because I thought that was hilarious) or when Saitama does his "death" punch and Popeye does his "spinach" punch. Also fun fact. That buff form of Popeye was actually a D.C character the was based off him. He fought Superman and wrecked him.

Fun fact about the spinach cans at the beginning of the fight, they are shown to be 1,500 yen, which is about $15usd. That's one expensive can of spinach man.

In "Meta", the name for the power characters like Popeye utilize is "Toon Force" which, if I recall correctly (iirc), was coined by the Loony Toons, or at least is named because of them. Toon force is basically "Toon Physics" in a nutshell. The laws of reality as we know it are basically conditional to the rules set by Toon Force, and what normally is impossible for a real person to do becomes possible when toon physics become involved, especially if the laws governing Toon Physics are actively acted upon. A good example is the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". If you don't know what that is...you really need to watch it. It is a cultural classic now. Anyways, in the movie the cartoon character "Roger Rabbit" was in handcuffs, and normally you can't break out of them without a key, a tool to cut them off, or incredible strength. The person Roger was handcuffed to, the other main character and detective Eddie Valiant, was trying to cut them off and asked Roger to hold still the table they were using to cut on. Roger then casually slips out of the cuffs and holds the table, asking "Does this help?", with Eddie replying "Yeah, thanks". Eddie immediately stops, realizing Roger slipped out of the cuffs, and slams down the hacksaw, making Roger put the cuffs back on in frightened fashion. "You mean to tell me you could have gotten out of them cuffs _at ANY TIME!?"_ Roger replies "No, not at any time! Only _when it was funny!"_ Toon force operates on the rules of "Cool", allowing for impossible things to happen when by all accounts it shouldn't because it's Cool, the rules of Drama, and the rule of Funny, to name some of these tropes. Popeye is an old cartoon character, from the 1930s, and he was in the time when "Toon Force" was a staple for cartoons because of how impossibly unreal the characters were in terms of ability. Back then, they were your average cartoon hero, today, the same character in a modern cartoon would be insanely overpowered. "Uncle Grandpa" is a good example of a modern character operating on Toon Force.

Popeye kinda had the same sort of "Toon Force" powers that The Mask did in his death battle, *and then some* That's kind of the problem with trying to actually put cartoon characters like him in the series in the first place because old school toons are absolutely nuts. If you see one in a Death Battle, chances are they're winning. That's honestly the reason I hope they stay away from it in the future unless it's for a gag or something, they're just not fair to have these 'semi-realistic' verses compete against.

Glad to see you finally react to this reality breaking fight! In my opinion this fight is in the top 5 of best death battles they've ever made

this is one of the ones where anyone who knows both characters can tell who will win before the match starts. Saitama is at least planetbuster level strong, but Popeye is Bugs Bunny level toonforce with the advantage of actually liking to fight.

That live action clip of Popeye is from the movie Popeye (1980) that had Robin Williams playing the titular Sailor Man. Also, Death Battle has indeed already started its new season with two new battles already, and the upcoming third one does indeed have a character from Demon Slayer up against someone from JoJo.

I kind of don't know if I have it directly but a person I know made a few art images of a hypothetical Saitama vs Popeye aftermath where Popeye takes the egg of Saitama and have an chicken hatch him back to life.

Also, that's one I'd like to see the math on. Not just bending a steel beam into the shape of a magnet, but positively charging it in the process...

Saitama Vs Popeye is a good example that stomp matchups can be entertaining fights.

This matchup was pretty much a complete squash and everyone knew it was coming the moment they announced it. Relatively speaking, while Saitama is damn near unstoppable in his own universe when you start comparing his feats and abilities with other characters in other media sources he really starts coming up short, this is especially true when you start bringing in characters who have access to abilities (hax) or magic that Saitama has no real defense against.

So the majority of people knew that Popeye was gonna win. But there have been those die hard Saitama fans that say this fight was bs. I know one reaction channel I saw didn't even listen to the explanation because it was "wrong" and that they "left out information for Saitama" (it didn't help that they skipped over parts of the analysis)

Yeah the more you watch the show, the more you'll be able to tell that. Yea they started him off as the joke character, but as a show goes on things get more and more sad for the villains and him. It gets pretty brutal later on

I think you mostly talked over it, but when you looked surprised at the fact that they said Saitama's workout routine is impossible to maintain, they were saying that he never actually got enough time to recover from the workouts, since he was doing them every single day, and by the time he completed them, he could only get like 6, maybe 4 hours of sleep, meaning that his body would never really benefit from it and basically tear itself apart. the only reason it doesn't is because of the classic trope of anime bullshit.

The next episode is Harley Quinn VS Jinx & after that it’s Scarlet Witch VS Zatanna. The 3rd episode of Season 9 is confirmed to be Jonathan Joestar VS Tanjiro, so that’s an episode you’ll have to skip. Another obvious outcome, but one of those "very enjoyable fights no matter what" battles.

Two fun facts: Popeye was played by Liam Swan, who's a long time writer for Death Battle. Actually, the second isn't very fun. Because of copyright concerns that came from this episode, they're not gonna end each analysis with a character quote for a while, if at all anymore.

This onejust goes to prove you just ca.'t beat the original superhero. True fact. Popey was used as inspiration by action comics to create superman before becoming the poster boy for dc comics alongside batman. Action comics played homage to this by creating another character called captain strong, who I think was used for the 3d modeling here as they look so much alike.

Think of it this way.. This is like comparing Superman in the 2000s and 2010 comics to Superman from the Golden Age comics (1938 - 1956) One has grounded scientific logic and the other runs on pure Sci-Fi and nonsense that can't be scientifically measured. Put them together in a fight, and sure enough, Golden Age Superman will defeat any of his modern incarnations. Weirdly enough, the weakest form of Superman was from the Animated Superman series in the 90s.

You talked over it, but they said if you aren't a trained athlete them doing opms work would be almost impossible. You are a trained athlete so it would be much easier, I however am nowhere near that so I would probably die if I tried that. Or at least would need more breaks than the workout allows.

Saitama's interesting when looking at him from a VS debate standpoint because while most people hype him up to be unbeatable, once you start comparing him to characters outside his world, he really falls short of being top tier and he ESPECALLY loses to many characters with good hax. There's always a bigger fish in the pond so to speak.

Actually I think by normal human standards Saitama should’ve developed Rhabdomyolysis. A potentially fatal disease caused by over-exercising. Saitama’s workout routine is very dangerous.

The biggest number in Death Battle belongs to MegaMan.EXE actually. Not saying he's the strongest character ever, but he certainly holds the award for the biggest number yet.

Also funny how you noticed Tanjiro in the Season 9 preview, since he's actually next up to fight as of writing this comment! ...unfortunately for you, he's fighting Jonathan Joestar.

DBX is okay, but it's really just shorter versions of the fights. People tend to like them less because they don't do any research and they usually have the way weaker character win as a result. I specifically remember one about Ruby from RWBY and Ragna from Blazblue that got people REALLY mad with the outcome.

Out of the various single item power boosts that exist from various comic/anime/cartoon sources the Popeye Spinach can is definitely one of the strongest, and technically there is nothing that says he only needs to eat one in a sitting, what if he ate a whole wartime shipping pallet (which they did show in the cartoon at one point)

Yeah, I said the same thing about how they should stop using cartoon characters vs non-cartoon ones. Not necessarily because they're too strong, but because they're too durable. Like, literally nothing seems to be able to destroy them, not even reality erasure. Then again, toons vs toons wouldn't be that interesting in a fight to the death either, because then it's just a Loony Toons episode, but one that would simply never end since the deciding factor is death.

I personally think that this episode is really really really good but I think that this match up is better/more fair now than it was then great fight regardless though.
