Lyle sells out every time here in Austin and his large band are doctorates and fellows in their own right everyone of them accomplished and famous on their own
Saw Lyle Lovett in Cardiff St David's Hall in the early 90's. Only about 8 or 10 of us were in the audience. Bless him, he called everyone to the front of the stage and performed the most intimate concert. He was absolutely brilliant and even played requests, I asked for 'This old Porch'. Wonderful man, wonderful musician. 👍🏴
Lyle should be a household name, Leo should be too. What power and rhythm they produce with two acoustic guitars. I can’t get enough of these two with just one song. I wish it would never end.
So cool to see Lyle as a family man late in his life finally finding joy and satisfaction. His songs have threaded through much of my adult life and I am forever grateful.
I've been a big fan of both of these guys for 40 years. I used to always watch ACL and can't believe I missed this episode. Lyle should have done a whole album with Leo playing backup.
True story; I was into Leo early in his career and went to Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama, about 1973, ‘74. Just Leo, a 6-string and a 12-string. After his awesome concert we were leaving and a guy in the row ahead of us commented, “Man, I’d love to have that guitar.” His date looked over her shoulder back at him and said, “Yeah, like that would help.”
Saw him when I was in college, Hoyt Axton opened, Leo tells funny stories between tunes, his singing wasn't very good but he was known for that "goose farts" sound.
I've listened to this tune probably dozens of times over the years but Leo's solo on this tune gives me chills every time. He's so great at bringing a lot of intricate, subtle embellishments that never overwhelm the melody.
I think Leo's solo really makes this song. The version with the "Big Band" is great but this is just stripped down and simple... which makes it better.
I saw Lyle and Leo at Chastain Park in Atlanta at around this same time. Leo played first and when he was introduced the announcer said, "And now, tonights opening act, Leo Kotke." Before Kotke started playing Lyle came out, took the microphone and said, "I have a correction to make--the great Leo Kotke doesn't open for ANYBODY. He's first on tonight's bill, and we'll close out the show together." Lyle might be the most humble man in popular music, and he and Leo are always worth seeing, alone or together!
I love Leo Kottke, even when he’s sitting still and just talking, he keeps noodling with his guitar, doing little runs and riffs. He and Lyle together do such a beautiful rendition of this song.
I saw him in Kalamazoo once, while noodling, Leo made a comment about getting lost in the noodling that was somewhat suggestive. In a pause, I spoke out with a loud sigh "Will you marry me?" He answered, with a sigh, "It's complicated." And then went straight into the next song.
Awesome to see this vid of these two stars back when they were young. Lyle was just emerging as a "name", Leo was well-traveled and exploding with music. They traded back and forth on who opened for whom in their concerts over the next several years, and they were both excellent. While I was an instant fan of Lyle's singing, through that gash of a mouth, I was always an ardent fan of Leo's smooth bass voice in his own vocal numbers. Two wonderful talents, each on his own tangent of artistic travel.
I once talked to Leo in a airport for almost 20 min. I had no idea who he was until he boarded his flight and a lady came and sat next to me and asked me if I knew who that was. I said nope then she told me. I never heard of him but I played guitar too but that day I was just leaving after graduation for a job in Manhattan. I was scared and awkward so he may have noticed that. Then I began to find out about him and been a fan ever since.
I was living in Austin at the time and came to this taping to see Leo Kottke. I believe it was 1987. Lyle Lovett was a surprise guest and at the time, I had never even heard of him. The performance was terrific. I wish I know how to find a full episode of this ACL. Anyone know?
What a song and what a performance. Gosh, Kottke is great, what a guitar player. I saw him 35 years ago in The Netherlands. What an evening. A string broke during this almost private concert, but it didn’t matter. He just played on.
Saw Leo open for Lyle and his large band in Memphis at the Mud Island Ampatheater many years ago. Went down to Memphis on a lark to see where The King came from. Half way through Leo's set, my wife say's " This guy sounds a lot like Leo Kottke" ! Yes,we were under the influence ....!! Went out and bought album of Lyle to go with a couple of Leo's. Still have them and still buying CD's of originals. Thanks for putting this cut on, IMHO U TUBE encourages folks to go out and buy music.
Been a huge fan of both Leo and Lyle since they first emerged on the music scene. Saw them both many times. Most recently I saw Lyle with John Hiatt last year. Back in the 90's my mother sent me a 1927 studio portrait of herself as a baby with her parents. I told my wife 'My God! My grandfather looked just like Lyle Lovett when he was young!' The resemblance was amazing. Even the hair. I had never mentioned Lyle to my mother, and thought about calling her to tell her who Lyle was and about the resemblance. Then I turned the photo over and on the back Mom had written 'Me and my folks. Not Lyle Lovett.'
I'd sure love to see this whole episode again. Leo's story to introduce "Naxco Steps" is marvelous, as is the whole show. I'd never heard of that guy with the big funny hair when he came out but been a fan for decades now and got to see his Large Band a few years ago-it was marvelous.
Saw Leo at Great Southeast Music Hall. All my friends were professional musicians and when Leo came out , I thought he was drunk I was thinking oh great then he started playing and all was well
Saw Leo open for Lyle in D.C. back the late 80's early 90's. Leo came out for Lyle's encore and they played a couple of tunes together. Lyle said that since he was from TX he thought that standing on a the same stage with Leo while holding a guitar was like him going one on one with Hakeem Olajuwon
Such a great song! Such great guitar playing! Why doesn't Lyle play this at every show? Maybe because Leo isn't playing lead? Just curious - love everything about this!
Doug Walsh The voice plus guitar plus the lyrics/songwriting itself! The guy just can’t be beat. It must be why God kinda shorted him on looks. There’s only so much one guy gets to get!
@@cherylbianchi9616 thank you so much... It appears you are a huge fan, right? Do so well to send me a mail on goggle chat to the email address on my RU-vid channel description. Look forward to reading from you, hopefully after my concert today. Do have a great day ahead!
So...what exactly was the year that these two fine musicians appeared together on ASL? One website mentions 1987 (makes sense, as per Lyle's hairdo and Leo's youthful look) Another mentioned 1988 - about the same time. Regardless, fine songcraft from two of my favorite singer/songwriters.
@@scottpearce7466 Hi Scott. Thanks for your reply. I did contact them and the reply was that they don't have everything before 1987. Hard to believe, but true.
