the first one is really beautiful! I think personally I would've put darker ties like dark green or dark red or even black, maybe in a velvety fabric or something

Ooh I love that! I was in a bit of a time crunch and grabbed my white ribbon, but next time I'm at the store I'll see if I find something I love more like you suggested!

One hundred percent agree with this. With the white lining I understand it, but I think it cheapens the overall effect.

I liked the addition of you showing celebrity photos and explaining how the technique was used in their garments (or not used as the case may be). That was a great way to get the information across.

Wendy!! Thank you so much for choosing my suggestion and taking the time to make the dress! 🥰Even though the end result isn’t exactly what you would have liked, I learned so much about pleating and the construction of it all through your experience. Looks like I’ll have to let this dress go.. Perhaps some dreams are only meant to be dreams 🥲

I wanted to say that the Scarlet Johansson dress uses French darts in the bodice. They are a really great way to give a snug fit around the bust and ribs with a more relaxed fit around the waist and hips. I find them to be incredibly comfortable and flattering. I think her skirt would have looked less awkward if they would have moved the darts to her side seams. Great, fun video, Wendy!

What a cool idea for a video! The black dress turned out amazing and I‘m really happy you showed us the whole process of the blue dress. I still think it looks cute, but it really may not be the most wearable. On a feedback note: I love that you have subtitles! If it is possible, I‘d like to ask for someone to maybe go over them again, because there are a bunch of missed words (Lutterloh become glitter low for example). This and the missing punctuation makes it a little hard for me to follow. I can do it for you if you want 🙈

Both of the dresses are so cute. The black one is my favorite. I love the fabric you chose to make it. I agree with you that the blue dress was a bit short and, in my opinion, just a bit snug. The design of the dress is really nice. Maybe if you had used a fabric with a little bit of stretch and a longer sipper it would have been more comfortable to wear. Great job on both pieces.

Around 14:56 what you called dart manipulation I think are instead called princess lines. Dart manipulation refers to the change in position of a previous dart, some pictures you showed as examples were more examples of how the princess lines can be changed, not darts.

I do not get around very much (as in shopping in brick&mortar places and online) as I mostly thrift but still obsess about those beautiful garments coming down those red carpets. Many of these looks that are not designed for life as most of us live it, they are designed to pose in (now I hear Madonna's "Vogue" running through my head 😆) or maybe walk a few feet down a carpet. What we do not see is celebrities going about their daily lives in those shoes and in that dress. All that being said, I love a dream being attempted and shown both for its pluses and minuses.
@susanrussell8195

The first dress was an amazing success. The second not so much. I think you were exactly correct about the model vs you. This style will always look better on a person without a full bust. I think overall the dress needed more ease, but the biggest culprit was fabric choice. Something with more drape. We’ve all made something and realized no matter what we do, we lost the battle when we chose the fabric. Loved this video. A true source of inspiration.

I know this is a dumb question but, when it comes to the darts if you use a none pattern fabric can you not make the pattern with the darts where they need to be then cut it out so the fabric has no darts on, so the shapes cut in already? Does that make sense? Like all the shape would be already there. Don’t think I’m explaining this properly sorry. Hopefully someone with a brain like mine will understand what I’m saying

The black dress looks great. Question, how is the neckline edged? The blue dress looks too small. Also, we wore that halter style in the 70s and it was unflattering then, too. I was a size 2 and felt fat in them. It's just not a good style.

I'm assuming I already know the answer. However, I am now wondering if there is a better method when comparing pattern slash and spread to patterning using draping. Is it just a preference that would cause someone to choose one method over the other, or is there legitimate pros and cons to each and the situation or garment would dictate what method is used. 🤔🤔
@withwendy
@withwendy 11 месяцев назад
This is such a great question! I'll just share some of my own experience, draping vs flat patterns each have their pros and cons, and some people's brains work better in visualizing/assembling one over the other. For the longest time I was a flat pattern girl. Pros being more efficient use of fabric (you can map out the patterns to minimize waste), easier to replicate a garment, cons being a lot of time spent on math, measurements, and drawings. As I got better at draping I would say the pros are a much more exact fit (but you need a dress form that is accurate), better anticipation of how a fabric will behave on a body with gravity at work; cons being a lot of time spent pinning and unpinning over and over. You can use draping or flat pattern to get similar outcomes, but I find as the fit of an item gets more precise, draping becomes a stronger choice!
@kariikosmos3005
@kariikosmos3005 11 месяцев назад
@withwendy thank you for this thorough explanation. I have just gotten a dress form for myself, so I am excited to start working with draping. Now I am wondering, as someone who has recreated the matoshi dress. Would you suggest I use draping or flat patterning for my own recreation?

The lighter dress top was 10/10, it looks classy and elegant, but as a 32 year old with spider veins I also would find the skirt length uncomfortable 😅 would hemming it or slitting it up the side seams work to transform it into a top?
