Moral of the story, for endgame: Look at everything 700+ (whether Sacred or Ancestral!) and check if it has at least 3 of the 4 right affixes you're looking for. Remember that 700 can get upgraded into a 725 which can then reroll the ranges on the affixes, potentially giving you a great item. (Or messing up your item. Check the upgrade preview before going to 725 or over!) You can calculate the value of 5/5 upgrade from an upgrade item by just multiplying each stat by 1.5.

I just wanted to say I would love to watch more videos like this about any game you find interesting. It gives so much information without being hand-holdy. Lets me make my own decisions on what items to use in game.

Excellent video, amazing succinct explanations. I genuinely feel like I have a handle on D4 items now (whereas previously I "knew" higher is better and thats about it). Would love to see a follow up video explaining the scaling of those other stats (max life, thorns, life on kill, etc)

This video is so eye opening, thank you so much. I just put together a build where I was being incredibly picky with only Ancestral gear and throwing items out of they weren't at least 780 item power, now i realize that I likely threw away so many good pieces of gear. I accepted getting the good gear was this much of a pain because that's what the end game grind is but it's much more simple, thank you so much.

Great video. I already knew most of the key points, but not everything. Good to have a refresher too. Funny aside: somehow my level 43 Druid alt ended up getting a Sacred two-handed axe that had a base of 700 (without upgrades) as soon as I hit T3 and I could equip it right away. The affixes and rolls were crazy too. Until that happened, I didn't even think an item power that high could drop at that level.

Don't even play D4 (yet) but these kinds of vids are really interesting. Love the deep dive, whether it's Tarkov, D4, music, or basically anything you do. Been looking forward to seeing this drop after you teasing it a few times on stream.

This is just a flat our GREAT video and as has been mentioned below, has changed completely how I view the items in the game. That said I think that the most important part of the video is your comment about having fun and not being so caught up in trying to max out your character so much, that you end up losing that fun element!

The fact that you didn’t curse until the very end shows how passionate you are about people ACTUALLY HAVING FUN ON GAMES! I appreciate the in-depth guide and what you stand for.

Just happened to come across this video as I have hit a bit of a wall with my Barb blood build. This is by far one of the most clear and concise videos I have watched with regards to item theory crafting. Thank you for sharing!

This was all known for months but it's great to have it condensed into a short video that really outlines how itemization works and there is probably plenty of people who can learn from this and I may help them when evaluating drops (a "bad item" at a glance can become quite powerful). In pre season I found a bow in WT3 that I used well into WT4 and at the time I got it made me basically oneshot everything that bow alone carried me into WT4 with ease.

Wonderful as always, its not tarkov but you still seem so perfectly in your element. (though my OCD hurts at question 7 being labeled as question 8 on screen)

Good stuff Veritas! Everything you covered was on the money. My friends were confused on why they felt so weak on higher tier dungeons and how they weren’t finding upgrades. When I asked them about what they were looking for they said the weren’t picking up any yellows….. Not only have I found most of my higher roll gear by picking up sacred and just plain rares, but I also have almost double the gold of any of them. Let’s just say they started picking up yellows and automatically found upgrades that they could use.

Thanks for the informative video. I’ll admit that I am finding it immensely difficult to tell what items are “better” at high levels in D4, and your video speaks to some of the reasons why. There’s so much variability and so much that’s not inherently obvious or intuitive on the surface. Knowing when to trade a few points of DPS for better sub stats or what particular sub stats out of the many viable options will better my character is very intimidating.

Great video! From experience the only thing I would note is that in Torment, poison resistance seems to actually matter, didn't seem like anything mattered except armor until then.

Very informative. That said, I see this is the exact reason casual players are not pushing from 80 to 100. You effectively can't find significantly better gear by going Ancestral once you pull high in the Sacred. I have some Sacred Penitent Greaves that I pulled at 61 that are better than the other 5 pairs I pulled that are all Ancestral. Yes, I know I effectively got a perfect roll on them, but Ancestral should be better or at least equal. I'm just saying that if you don't keep a steady progression in power in the way that can be understood by an average person who doesn't min max, you lose a good chunk of the player base. Blizzard really should have made the terms Sacred and Ancestral mean something. From what I see, they really don't.

Must admit I did start leaving those sacred items on the ground after hitting WT4. At the same time I did notice that hitting that 725 on upgrading did some sort of magic to an item sometimes. Great video!

Excellent analysis and insight. Will definitely change how I approach how I look at my drops. Kinda weird/sad that Blizzard made sacred/ancestral designations this ambigiuos. 95% of the player base will never looks at sacreds once then have access to ancestrals and will have a worse gaming experience because of it. Like, huh?

This video is packed with incredibly useful info! I was completely unaware of 90% of the facts presented. This greatly increased my understanding of how items work in the game AND increaed d my enjoyment as I now realize I have more chances at getting potentially awesome gear!

While per level you will be stronger looting and inspecting every sacred item that drops in the game by a small degree. The amount of invo space and time it takes to do so, is all time you could be leveling and killing more mobs so you would be losing out on higher item level items by doing so. Which in return means you will have lower armor, and life on your character and less aspects and uniques etc.

Entering the Gateway to Learning right after the quiz was the best part of the video. Keep it up!

Excellent video. My strategy was to generally discard anything that was lower item power than that what is currently equipped. Now, I'll be looking closely at 700 item power and above to see for better rolls. Thank you for clarifying this confusing and mysterious game of stats.

Excellent video! My main reason for not picking up all the sacreds I've seen so far is that my necromancer is a very slow boye, so I try to save stash space in order to save a little bit of time. I'll give sacreds a chance in Season 1, for sure!

I have two daggers with both (plus dexterity) and (plus to all stats) on them. When i try switching with fully upgraded weapons with much higher power levels, my characters attack power drops. It is the plus dex and stats that makes my original weapons so powerful. So does that mean I am good as is? Or is there some other way to look at this?

Great video. It confirms what I've noticed since I started to get to grips with the game around level 40 or 50: as the man said, look at the item affixes, not just item power, and understand their upgrade potential. I filter items based on their affixes to make sure they're decently powerful and that the majority of the affixes are of the right type for what I want to achieve. I keep a lot of "maybe" Rare and Legendary items in storage and go back to it all the time to review/assess my loadout, shift my loadout around, remove and imprint Aspects if something super strong drops. If a Rare item with no Aspect drops but has great affixes and upgrade potential I'll go back to storage and find an aspect from a Legendary item that didn't have the affixes I need and imprint it onto the Rare. At level 63, playing as an ice sorceress in Tier 3, I'm feeling pretty OP, often surpassing others in Hell Tides at the speed in which I dispatch enemies. Never played an ARPG before Diablo IV. As a side note, I was in the tier 4 Capstone dungeon the day before yesterday fighting the boss and Blizzard released their patch and it kicked me out, otherwise I'd be in tier 4 now (annoying).

What about weapon damage for a barbarian which yoy use for whirlwind? How much does it matter

Interesting video... informative video. Thank you! At what player level and world tier level would you start really focusing on the gear you pick up looking for "end game" viable things? I haven't really bothered with upgrading gear when leveling fairly rapidly, but man the information you did share was really good related to that.

I knew most of this and that's how I know how rare and excellent this video is. Your reasoning and rationale are beautiful to listen to. There is something like "thinking" alike.

I knew a solid amount for items work and that item power didn't necessarily make the best item. However, I learned an incredible amount from this video. I'm guilty of just trashing sacred items these days. Knowing this just adds another level of "oooo what's that" to the game. This is my first time watching any of your videos and even ever hearing of you and that was one of the best, most informative videos I've ever watch. Savage work!

Great video. I have been picking up and checking all sacred items before I sell but your video reminds me to also check the sacred items at the vendor.

Great detail. Great video. I generally try and look at all the rolls. What I still struggle with is debating which affixes are best for my character. For example getting an affix that has a damage increase but then the item you’re comparing as a greater increase in damage if enemies are close. Or when I get a high roll of lucky hit chance increase, when I have some lucky hit skills or aspects. Another example, is if I get an affix that’s pointless but all others are great. Or deciding if an increase in skill rank is more important than stat boosts. I don’t play a lot of endgame. Most of my characters are 40-65 range. Sometimes as well if I get a better item but it’s close and I’ve already imprinted the aspect I want, I’ll wait since you can’t extract an imprinted aspect. I also always tend to focus on boots with additional evade chargers, even if the boots are much better. I guess ultimately the best way is to experiment and look closely at your damage numbers and see what seems to be better. It would be nice if there was a stat that could calculate average damage over a specific time, so you could easily determine if an item is truly better for your character. If my character isn’t dying much, I also tend to focus more on offensive stats, appose to defensive. Just because you get perfect or high rolls on all affixes doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better for your character if the affixes aren’t applicable. I don’t re roll affixes that often. It’s really expensive and I think that is more important in the endgame, when it becomes harder to find better gear.

This vid is incredible. You can so easily get caught in the weeds with this kind of stuff, but the information here is so straightforward and digestible. As someone who routinely scrapped sacreds for materials, I'll be reassessing the way I view loot drops from here on out.

When I'm about to upgrade an item passing the breakpoint, the new stats are fixed? what if I restart the game or go to other Occultist? Can I have a different outcome?

This brought focus and clarity to many things We had been slowly intuiting, nice to know We were on to something.

A great and clear breakdown of items. Having been 100 for a long time in season and out of season, I will add one different twist. You can only hold so many scratch off tickets in your pockets. You find these tickets out while enjoying being in the outdoors, but you have to go home to scratch them. So, do you only put better odds tickets in your pocket or do you go home and scratch them every time your pockets are full? Typically in hell tides, my pockets get full fast and to keep "playing" and not traveling to town to scratch tickets all the time, I only grab high odds tickets (Ancestral items). In a NM80 plus dungeon, I will fill my pockets with tickets fast and have to go back to town to deal with it, or I can move faster and pick up only the high value tickets. If you add that to your math, I am not certain a player is missing out on drops as they are getting the same number of tickets scratched per hour of play on average, just they are only scratching the higher odds tickets. Up to level 100 or your ability to clear NM70 and above, yea, run to town and scratch, but once you are at end game you will fill up fast on just higher odds tickets. Even at late end game though, I pick up all rings and amulets as they are so hard to find with good rolls.

Finally, someone breaks it down well. I knew some of this, but not nearly all of it. Thank you sir.

Awesome video. I had kind of worked some of this out for myself, still running some sacred gear at level 75 purely because of the rolls. But this video explains it perfectly.

Really interesting. I will play around more with trying to upgrade my sacred items. There is a lot here. ONe question i have had is whether it is how to weight the different affixes . For example, you have +ranks of skills vs % boost of skill, vs + all stats.

Good video, i actually figured this out about a week or so ago and have been looking at sacred a little closer before i sell it or scrap it, ive used a couple sacred since and made them legendary because of the great stats or whatever im looking for on them

It was very confusing and especially when they market ancestral they really make it seem like it has better potential. I’m 75 so i am just running around skipping sacred. But is an 800+ ring more likely to roll higher in the ancestral range than a 725 sacred/ancestral? Is there any weight placed on IP when it rolls the stats?

Thank you for the video, some of this I knew and a lot I didn't, so GREAT video. I would ask if you happen to know the damage increase or multiplier of weapons similar to what you showed for the chest = 1.75% armor. I am not sure but think that the characters attack power is what the other stats work off? so 1500 dmg vs 1700 dmg could mean a F ton in the end as its adds to your characters overall attack power which is the start of the multiplying and adding of the other stats??

This was extremely helpful and I'm going to check my stash and double check to see if I have some God tier items that I overlooked due to item level or lower stats that I could easily reroll and upgrade. Definitely looking forward to your next video on items 102 lol.

I pick everything up, but do you need to equip any of it or hold onto it to possibly get a better chance at better drops? Just curious. Who leaves any loot behind? Doesn’t take long to sell or salvage loot.

I just got to 52 on world tier 2 and just doing seasonal campaign quests but i always wondered about a bit weaker gear was making my character stronger so this explains it thanks im gonna use this more from now on

Fantastic video, even from a fairly seasoned player. Knew some of this but not all of it, especially in the context you places it in. Great when you succinctly give a simple solution to try: pick up sacred jewelry, boots, gloves.

Also! Remember to check the vendors! Bought a god drop necklace today at lvl 100 which is weird but hey I'll take it. This is a great video, I love and hate how gear is handled in this game. Because I do love the idea of not having to grind high level content to get the best gear in the game. But that also removes the incentive to grind high level content. I do think this video probably explains why we do not have a World Tier 5 at this time. They haven't quite worked out the next level of gear scaling just yet.
