What a legend! I grew up in Woodstock Ny and Levon was a huge part of that towns community. He would throw jam parties, or rambles as he would call it, but i never attended one. I really missed out. When he died they changed the name of the main road coming into Woodstock "Levon Helm Memorial Drive" its been around a decade since i lived there and the town is nothing like it was when i was growing up, but i really miss it.

Levon helm is my hero, the guy is an absolute legend and a beast of a drummer. His playing on the last waltz was out of this world good.

Most of my favourite music was done without a click and to tape.

One of the musicians down here in Southampton said to a group of us on the facebook group "find your own metronome!" And thats true. Its could be a loop, a delay effect, the way the note decays on a particular instrument or in an environment.. It makes things more fluid and interesting to the ear. Now can we have the same approach against big pop stars and autotune?

Ah, the great grid (and click) debate. I'm down for a click because you can always move around it. I think the problem, like he said so well, is that when you snap everything perfectly aligned, it takes the life out of it. Although, in some genres/songs that's obviously justified. I do think more bands should try tracking the basic elements of a song live, if they can. Maybe we're moving away from that now that a lot of recordings are done remote.

Yes- this! The obsession with metronomic time has little to do with human feeling- or even good rhythmic feel. Go listen to Stewart Copeland, or Paul Thompson (Roxy M.). It’s similar to pitch shifting- you’re removing the nuances and expression from the performance. Do I need to say that this is not a good thing?

If the musicians are masters of their art then there is no need to grid anything - the music is as intended. If you have a competency issue, they may need stabilizers to keep things on track.

Totally agree IF the drummer is good! And can also be able to play on grid if wanted, many use this as an excuse i feel haha when they are not that tight

Music until now (last years) has never been about metronomic perfection. Classical music have always used a conductor which will fluctuate in tempo according to what the piece needs.

Levon, Levon loves his money. He makes a lot they say. Spends his time counting, in a garage by the motor way.

It’s just not applicable for close micd multitracking. Broadway illustrates what he says but LUFS are like -14 or something
