Using my ceiling fans has helped enormously in keeping my plants from staying too wet. I moved from a dryer state to a more humid state and struggled to keep the plants from drowning. I amended my soil, and started buying terracotta pots at thrift stores. Life is good!!!

I would say you don't want to press everything down(soil), because you DO want air pockets. You want nice little air pocket humidity zones throughout your medium ideally. The roots love em
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
thats fair, small air pockets; good. large pockets of roots touching no soil drying them out and having them die off; bad.

Seeing as how much we love your advice it would be a lot fun if we could give each other advice in jokes only. Some puns, some knock knock jokes. Maybe your plant jokes. Viewers can send some in but other RU-vidrs can pitch in too if they’re inclined.

It looked to me like she and you were using different phone apps for light reading, they're wildly inaccurate but using the same app would at least yield comparable results, different phone apps completely nullify the numbers. Still, your down to earth approach is useful and appreciated, as always. I've seen way too many plant channels turn into the typical RU-vid "latest hack" type.

Why shouldn't there be any air pockets in the soil? I use a chunky mix for my aroids and the goal of it is to have more air for the roots. My E. N'joy is in a clear pot and I can see the roots growing through the air pockets

How do you know if you should be adding support for your monstera? the growth on mine seems pretty normal and contained but im not sure if at some point i should add some kind of support for the plants benefit.
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
Adding support sooner is better as controlling the growth direction becomes more difficult as the plant gets larger.

How come you use a mosspole, when you've educated us to instead use planks
@pixelcat4187
@pixelcat4187 Месяц назад
I think its more Lee has shown us that in a lot of cases moss poles's benefits do not outweight its hassles (it drying out constantly, not easily stackable, etc). But if you want a climbing plant to mature and grow, a miss pole has a slight advantage over it (especially if you want to propagate it later since youre essentially air layering it as it grows). He mentions this monstera is a reverted mint, which is a very desirable plant to collectors, so this might be why hes going with a pole this time
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
The pole I used isn't moss, its filled with coco coir. I like the way it looks and they're modular so i can extend it when its ready.

Do all plants like to be root bound? What about succulents?
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
no, not all plants like to be rootbound. most would grow faster and larger by not being root bound. Plants have different levels of tolerance for being rootbound. succulents tend to have fine, shallow roots, so they don't need to be repotted often.

I repotted my monstera into a pot with a self watering spout at bottom. There is a thick string, almost soft rope at bottom to draw water up. Is this a good pot for my monstera?
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
your Monstera can live in a self watering pot. they're not ideal, but if you have a good soil mix it can work. or if youre doing a pon medium, that can work.

I repotted my monstera just today! And now I hope I haven't sentenced it to death... 😮 It had about 5% soil left and was leaning so much, even with its support stake, that it was starting to make the round plastic pot oval. I have probably killed it because I chopped off a few of the biggest roots and separated off a baby (putting it in its own pot). I then put it back in the same pot with the same wooden support. I should have done it into terracotta. Oops.
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Месяц назад
that is concerning. why did you chop off some roots? were they dying?
@grooviechickie
@grooviechickie Месяц назад
@@KillThisPlantno they were wound around, right up against the edges of the pot inside. It was one of those self-watering pots and the roots had gone through the holes and taken up the entire space inside the watering base too. Edited to add that those roots inside the base of the pot had no soil whatsoever and were drying out. I had to cut the roots off to separate them from the base. I now think self-watering pots are not good for monsteras so I will go get a traditional terracotta pot.
