So I don’t lead worship, but I received a very profound response from my pastor saying that I can’t sing. The worship leaders asked if I can sing and before I was even able to answer the pastor said that I couldn’t sing. I may not sound the best but I have so much passion to sing. However for a while I let that statement ruin my worship to the point where I don’t sing while playing guitar. However I did put that behind me eventually and I sing my heart out.

My sister in law struggles with singing too but is an excellent speaker. She serves as a lay speaker at my church. I pick on her once and a while and ask her if she wants to join me on the worship stage and picks on me about speaking ( as I am a terrible speaker) . It usually ends up with both of us breaking out in laughter and reminding each other that the bible doesn't say to make a beautiful noise but to make a joyful noise..

So encouraging! Many ppl can sing (perform) but not everyone is annointed to lead worship. Appreciate your honesty and humble take on how God equips His saints to accomplish the tasks He laid out for us.

I would say probably 8. Man, why does it feel awkward rating myself this high? I don't have a killer range and I can't do a lot of vocal acrobatics, like some people I would rate as 9 or 10. For several years, I was always comparing myself to people who sang better than me. So I wouldn't sing in front of others (including my wife who is probably a 9.5) because I didn't think I was ever good enough. But then I was always hearing people who were less talented than me, but who were out there giving it their best. I became convicted that I was hoarding a gift that God had entrusted me. So I started volunteering to sing at church. First, singing backup, whenever they were short a male vocalist. Next, leading a verse here and there, whenever the worship leader asked. Then, leading full songs. At this point, I knew that I had the tools to lead worship, but I just wasn't comfortable being the main guy. This is when I was asked if I would consider leading worship for the church's prison ministry. So I ended up doing this for 3 years, which gave me some incredible leading experience. Now, I've taken a position as worship leader for a smaller local church. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I felt like I needed to share the story.

I will say an 8 on singing. I sing in many places and have had compliments. I sing in the congregation and people around me enjoy it. That said, the primary worship leader at our church does not care for my voice. Substitute leaders will permit me to lead a song and everything goes really well. But the primary leader does not like anything I do on the team, even if it is on pitch. So I have stepped back from serving unless there is a true need (like someone can't be there) because I would prefer to sing to the Lord as a congregant than stress out on the team because nothing I do is pleasing for the leader. I have watched many of your videos and appreciate them all. I was a worship leader myself in a very small church where all we had was me singing and someone else playing piano. I heard the critiques on that end too - congregants who didn't like the songs chosen or the transitions or whatever.

Mee too I face that kind of situation and sometimes I beat myself up thinking that I sing really bad and that really shutters my confidence to lead worship in church . I don't get it

haha was a 3 but prolly a 5.2 now lol. At my church though we have singers though so most of the time so I will welcome people, etc. but most of the time I don't have to sing. In fact, I'm a drummer so I don't even play melody. BUT, what I do have is a voice good enough to sing in emergencies as well as a background in IT so what I lack in melodic instrument ability, I make up in the ability to create and run tracks and technology with excellence.

Thank you for this. I sing decently but working on leading worship has been one of the biggest challenges and blessings I’ve been given. Jesus works through us even when we’re our own biggest critics. To see the growth in our group over the almost last 2 years is a blessing in and of itself. I can say our team is family and now that’s translating into a greater worship experience for us and our congregation. If you’re just starting out, keep going! He has big plans for you!

This is so encouraging to me. I play keys well, but have been told all my life the tone of my voice is "different" so I have shied away from singing during worship sets. I even took voice lessons this past January, but the teacher, after a month didn't have much to teach me except to practice a handful of things she taught me. I felt discouraged again and stopped practicing. And at the church I lead once a month (by leading, I mean I choose the songs, the Scriptures and simple phrases, with my speaking voice during the transitions and leave the singing to the vocalists) the songs they do are higher than my range so I stay silent. I think I'll go back to those things my teacher advised me to work on, and see where it leads.

I love to sing, but compared to those that are getting paid for it, I'm a 6.5. Others may rate me higher. If we can sing a song in the original key, I do that because it is easier for the musicians to learn and it's what most have sung with the radio. I need to work on my break point, but... I just love to worship.

I think lots of people can sing in tune which is important to lead with but not many are born with a great vocal tone which is something totally different.

I have a serious question: I am the worship leader for my church, which is part of the International Pentecostal Holiness denomination. Our team consists of 7 vocalists, keys (me), 2 acoustic guitars, 1 bass, and 3 rotating drummers. Occasionally, I play keys at another church that uses tracks/click&guide. My church does not. The other church’s music “sounds better” but our team is Holy Spirit led and the congregation is extremely engaged with young and older folks seeking/worshiping Jesus at the altar at the front of the church. Our team’s desire is to be better musicians and singers but not at the cost of loosing the anointing that is visibly/spiritually evident. Is there a way to use “tracks” and remain “Spirit-led”?

Well the worship leaders are all above average and they only want above average singers to sing! I consider myself a 8 but I’m not good enough for them. lol if you are like hillsong you can make it on my churches team which is not right. You can have an anointing and they will tell you that u have a great anointing but still can’t sing. 😂
