You Don't Lap Plates?! Interior Wall Layout Project 150

Basic, very basic interior wall lay out. The biggest difference here is that all three of our plates are identical, we strap them instead of lapping them. Big time savings, less ladder work, and no loss in strength. In New Zealand they do something similar and its built into their code.
The Makita 10 1/4" saw is lightweight and powerful, no cord to trip on. The Big Foot Tools layout stick is a cheap jig that is worth using in my view.

Please remember that I'm not showing the best way to form footings, but just the method that works well for us. Thanks for watching!
Oh and another takeaway, if you use a drone for commercial work, you need to be part107 certified. Commercial work includes social media like RU-vid if you plan to make an income off of that. I watched a video about this last May and then purchased the Part 107 Course sso.teachable.... I studied and learned for 1 month and then took my test. I scored a 95%, which is a testament to how good Greg and the crew over there teach. That link will save you $100 off the course and support this channel.

I love your videos, and I learn a lot... Then I remember I'll never build a new home, and every house I'll ever buy to fix up is from the 1820's, so I'll get to use line 0.002% of what I learn here. Oh well, still good content!

Do you find in your area that you get more two X material that are 16’ that crown as opposed to 12’ that aren’t crowned as bad ?

Lmao at people whining about not overlapping. Simpson specializes in making hurricane proof structural products. Strapping the plates is perfectly acceptable and just as strong

Newish framer here, I like your methods way better than some that I've been taught. Just curious, if you're connecting all of the interiors as you go how are you getting them plum? We stand them up, anchor on our line and brace then plum them all at the end when we connect them and fill in top plates. Your processes are much more streamlined and seem like they make a one or two man show go a lot smoother. Great content as always!

You guys are awesome. You and Kyle are teaching me a ton. So when I go and build my own house I will have the confidence it is done right and structurally sound. Like and awesome framer. Keep feeding me the information guys. Keep up the awesome work guys. Also how can I get an awesome framers hat. I got to have one. Lol.

I don’t like or dislike the straps. It’s just another added expense. However, if I were training new carpenters I can see the bonus in have the straps. Great work as always.

Is there a reference in the IBC that allows this strapping instead of overlap or do you need an engineer to stamp the detail for your code official?

Nice touch having the definition of heretical in the video for those of us who, intentionally or otherwise, like to misunderstand the words of controversial statements.

@@Faruk651 I’m sure it’s perfectly fine if an engineer signs off on it. I’m sure you probably use a bunch of 2x12 material stacked together for your headers instead of moving to a single LVL too. It’s ok to be more efficient and progress in your trade.

@@nZebco If it wasn't as strong or stronger then a wood connection, would it be hurricane rated? Lol If you're pulling apart a partition wall, which these are, they're not structural, it's going to be the same shear force pulling them apart as a vertical strap with uplifting.

Thanks for the video!! What keeps you from moving to single top plate if you're not overlapping? Do you still need the flexibility to not stack members sometimes?

Special length studs. And if you have to cut them, that's more work. Better to stick with double plate and precuts.

I assume the thickness of the straps and nails isn't enough to cause issues with the future floor system / trusses potentially sitting on top of them.
@drummerboy3377
@drummerboy3377 2 года назад
He said towards the end that he tries to keep them off layout if possible, but I would assume that 1/16” to 3/32” thick strap won’t make much of a problem either way
@royordway9157
@royordway9157 2 года назад
I have had material out of the same bundle that is different thicknesses and widths. I would have thought that if they are in the same bundle that they came from the same 4 sided planer so they are the same. Maybe I'm thinking wrong. To respond to your question, I don't think it would make a difference. By the time each piece of wood shrinks differently who knows how thick each piece will be. Again, maybe I'm all wet.
