This will spark some debate: do you really need two hands on the steering wheel?
Here's what we'll cover:
One or Two Hands - What's Best? I'll break down why using one or two hands isn't about right or wrong but about using the right grip for the right situation.
Control with One Hand: Believe it or not, you can have plenty of control with just one hand. People with only one arm can drive perfectly well, and they’re legally allowed to drive too.
The Stigma of One-Handed Driving: We'll explore why one-handed driving has a bad reputation, looking back at the days of old cars without power steering.
Modern Car Technology: Today's cars have much faster and more responsive steering racks, making one-handed driving much easier and safer.
When Two Hands Are Necessary: I'll highlight specific situations where having two hands on the wheel is crucial, especially during high-speed driving or in emergency situations.
Whether you're a new driver or have years of experience, this video will give you a new perspective on steering techniques and help you understand when and why to use one or both hands.

01:24 Reasons not to use 1 hand

When I was a kid my Aunty could roll a cigarette left-handed while driving. She was a superb pianist, so may have had exquisite control of her fingers, but she drove a Holden without power steering. I think the danger is with power steering a small movement can put you into oncoming traffic while you check your phone - old steering was strongly self-centring.

The very first time I was driving a car in traffic, my driving instructor noticed how tense and fearful I was navigating the fairly calm morning roads. When we got to a very clear-sighted gentle curving road, he said: "I want you to do something right now, when the road is the easiest. Put your right hand onto the gearstick and steer with one hand. Don't think, just do it." I did so and I was pretty amazed that one hand really is all you need for most normal operation of the wheel. My confidence slowly built up and by the time I drove us back to starting point, my fear and tension was much more manageable. So if nothing else, it is an excellent technique to calm down nervous new drivers, such as myself.

to me, 9-3 is like "the lean", you know, the moment you get serious. For an easy drive one hand at 4-5 o'clock, and optionally the other at 7-8, works just fine. The entire 9-3 thing is like a speed limit in a sense. Just because it's 50, doesn't mean you should be doing 50 when the conditions just aren't right, and conversly; just becase it's 50, it doesn't mean that you will die immediately when driving 55. One thing tho - one hand at 12. I don't trust people who drive with one hand at 12 :D

i find more important than the one-hand / two-hand distinguisher is to be that you should always aim to pull on the wheel rather than push (pretty sure i got that from one of your other videos mick!) i find myself driving one-handed a lot, but the hand which i'm using changes depending on going left or right (left hand to go left, right hand to go right) pulling is much better at providing finesse than pushing

German driving instructors always want you to use both hands on the wheel all the time on 2 and 10 o clock. I always felt it to be very clumsy, it just didn't felt right. When i feel like i need both hands i use 3 and 9 o clock. But most of the time my left hand is on 9 or 8 o clock and my right hand is always ready to change gears. From my observation people who constantly put both hands on the wheel are the ones who drive very unsettled.

In the fifties and before car steering was manual and a bit hard, the steering wheel had to make several complete circles to go from stop to stop, and was larger in diameter, which often needed two hands. Now cars require very light and little inputs to the steering wheel so one handed is ok.

My inctructor prescribed the pull/push technique and I still use it to this day. Also I always rest my arm on the door and then steer like a cripple, with the left hand up at 9 o'clock and the other hand somewhere down at 4 o'clock (the other way around for me, because I drive a left-hand drive vehicle). I only position my hands on the steering wheel like a normal person, when cornering fast and in roundabaouts, but then I use this strange pull/push technique again.
@milenangelov3413
@milenangelov3413 14 дней назад
Was just about to write the same thing!!! I also drive a left-hand drive vehicle and just put my left hand on the door and keep the steering wheel with it at 9 o'clock and when I am cornering fast grab it with 2 hands or even just grab it with both hands when cornering right (don't know just I just feel more safe, more secure when cornering right with both hands than with only one), cornering left I do by just my left hand.

It's a good point, but I kind of disagree. Disclaimer: I drive with one hand on the wheel too, (not at 12 o'clock to be clear, but exactly the way you drive here), so I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong and what I'm doing is good. 99% of the time this will serve you well, and it's very comfortable, also allows you softer steering corrections at speed. But here is the catch about that 1% of the time that might change things for you. If you have a powerful car and you're driving spiritedly, I really don't recommend driving with one hand on the wheel (at 4/5 o'clock for example), because you may find something just came up in your path 25 meters ahead and you need to do an evasive maneuver to bypass it. An evasive maneuver usually involves 180 degrees steering wheel turn in one direction and then back quickly. You need two hands for that, in order no to lose control of the car when you do it. And usually you need to do it with your hands on 9 and 3 so that you have good grip of the steering wheel. Now here is the tricky part. *At that speed* in the time it takes you to move your relaxed hand to 3 o'clock and your left hand to 9 o'clock you just crossed that distance and spent the time you had available to correct the situation. By the time you have your hands on the wheel correctly, you probably just slammed into whatever you were trying to avoid on the road. So yeah, again, I am doing it too, but this 1% situation is always in the back of my mind.

When I'm casually driving, I drive in the 12 o clock position. If I need precision driving, for example it's a thin road with lots of high speed traffic, I use 9 and 3 hand position. Changing grips is best. Rather than keeping the same. It keeps driving engaging.

It's not that you can't go for a spirited drive with one hand on the wheel, it's that if you hit a pothole or a bump the wheel can jump something like 45-90 degrees to (usually) the left or the opposite side to your hand if caught unaware which could make you swerve lanes or break traction all together causing a dangerous situation for all around. I have the same M2, it's ridiculous as far as drifting goes, I'm in love with it. Same colour, same interior (thought the others were a bit much with the huge M stripes), but I got the black wheels like Batman.

only time I use two hands is at high speed, and on windy country lanes. I find if you are cruising on a motorway using two hands is more dangerous as you are tiring both your arms out, i always like to switch grip just to give one arm a rest, or even switch to a low grip. The power steering argument is bang on, you can drive anything with 1 finger let alone an arm XD

Fun fact: F80s had a different rack than the “normal” 3 and 4 series. One was ZF, the other Presta/ThyssenKrupp I think. The normal racks were appalling, luckily the F87 M2 got the better rack off the M4. But if you back-to-back the N55 with the CS, it’s crazy what a difference software can have on the steering behaviour. Don’t know how it is on the G chassis

I've been following him very closely, probably seen every video he's ever made, the 2 documentary/interviews, the underground streams... I think he's reckless and gives us all a bad name. It's exactly everything I'm against. I've seen him clip/hit other cars 5+ times now, he drove away every time. Doing donuts around a police car just means the next guy with a modified car is guaranteed to get a ticket where he might have been given a warning. That's not even mentioning the chance of something going REALLY wrong... although I don't think he's pushing 10/10 so it's pretty unlikely... but all it takes is one patch of oil on a wet day, one motorcyclist he didn't notice... I can't help but watch though.

I am driving a Ford Focus 2016 in sunny South Texas , and have observed that driving one-handed places too much strain on my hand/wrists. I have working electronic steering (it uses an electric motor, it is not hydraulic), but the steering is a bit firm, you wouldn't be able to turn it around with one finger. So, I am mostly doing two hands in the 2 o clock and 10 o clock position for driving straight with minor corrections. 3 to 9 is good for curvy roads, but I find that 2 and 10 is less straining for very long drives on straight roads. One hand for sharm turns on roundabouts or intersections, is a no brainer. I don't see an issue driving one handed if one has a steering wheel that is less firm and easy to turn around with minimal force. Which brings me to the mainpoint: maybe the BMW is a better car? 🙄😂🚗 and the steering is more comfortable?

Thanks mate! I'm loving it! It's so much car! Coming back to manual has been a bit of a learning curve after not driving one for about 2 years but I'm almost ready to making some manual-focused videos. The car itself is just stupid honestly... so much power. So much brakes. Probably a little too fast for the road, but you can do slidey stuff so it's fun even at low speeds, especially in the wet. I did have to order a taxi after a garden chair I bought wouldn't fit in the boot because the opening was too small. 26mpg since I got the car which is comparable to the Megane's ~28-30... not terrible. I did drain a whole tank in 120 miles having a lot of fun the weekend after I got it. Overall I'm enjoying it a ton, still lots more room for growth in my abilities with it but largely very, very happy. I don't like how much attention it gets :/ feels sketchy parking it anywhere that isn't private so I do think twice about some trips, which I didn't do in the Megane.

Driving one-handed is okay in very low risk situations, such as cruising on a motorway, but certainly not in any situation where there is a chance you may need to suddenly swerve to avoid a crash. Driving one handed at 50Mph around corners on relatively narrow country roads is just stupid. Your point about it being always better to slam on the brakes than swerve so it doesn't matter is just pure cope.

Two hands on the steering wheel doesn’t give you the most control in all situations. It takes a lot longer to completely turn the steering wheel with two hands rather than one. If you need to avoid something, in most situations you’re going to need to break rather than swerve, there’s more than likely going to be other road users around, such as on the other side of the road, so swerving to avoid an accident or an object is hardly going to be the case, and even if it is, it doesn’t take any time at all to get your other hand back on the steering wheel. The driver’s instincts would have already kicked in to know they need both hands on the wheel. Driving at high speeds on narrow roads where corners aren’t sharp, driving one handed is probably better because you only need to give small inputs as Mick discussed in the video, and one handed makes that a lot easier and comfortable. Besides, when would you ever need to swerve to avoid an accident in narrow country roads? you’ll end up in the bushes

Anecdotally, it's much easier to make the small corrections needed to avoid imperfections like potholes or an oncoming car coming over your lane even on tight two lane roads. You only need a quick and small movement. A lot of new drivers, who two hand, might yank the wheel in panic. Doing so with two hands means you might be unsettle the car. It's my personal theory on why we have footage of people of people binning their cars after avoiding something that would've only needed a small correction

@@abdulwakil2613 One hand gives much less control over the steering, it is far too easy to accidentally put into much input. Imagine if you are driving one-handed at the 4 O'clock position, if you suddenly need to swerve right then the momentum of your hand will push the steering wheel beyond the intended input. When driving two-handed the other hand acts as a counter-balance so unintended inputs are far less likely. Yes, in most cases you are better off braking, but not all, driving with two hands gives the ability to do both. In some cases swerving is the only way to avoid a collision. Driving fast one handed on curving roads is a terrible idea, smaller inputs means they are less accurate, it takes a lot of minor corrections in the steering to keep the car on the intended course.

@@abdulwakil2613 It's much easier to take the second hand off the steering wheel while going on roundabout than having to put it on the steering wheel in sudden situation.

@@MegaMacStudios I think that the opposite of your theory is true. It's very easy to accidentally apply too much steering input when driving one-handed because the momentum of the hand is traveling quickly in one direction, whereas driving with both hands the resistance of the other hand acts as a counter-balance.

You should not be posting about driving and giving advice Mick because it is bad, poor and dangerous advice. You are a dangerous driver. Trying to swerve and recover from an obstacle with one hand is bound to fail. You are reckless just in creating these videos with your high level of personal distraction.
