Yes, this review / discussion / tear down / laugh track / etc. is longer than the movie. I guess you'll just have to get over that.
And don't get me wrong, Space Battleship Yamato was visually stunning, as so many things from its source and genre can be.
But... Great Maker...

I believe in the original anime, The Space Ship Yamato wasn't the WWII Battleship Yamato, but instead was a new built in the profile of the WWII Battleship Yamato and in the spot of its wreckage to hide the fact that Humans were building a new ship. So I am not sure but in the image of the Space Ship Yamato rising of the ground, there looks to a bunch of metal tubes in the dirt facing off to the side, which to me reminds me of the triple barrels of the turrets. Might be a call back to that.

It was a bit confused wasn't it. They either built the starship inside the "skin" of the real Yamato to maintain secrecy. But that would make the SB Yamato smaller than the original battleship. Other versions suggest that what was seen on the surface was a new craft, replacing the Yamato wreck and camouflaged to appear like the wreck and was accordingly larger than the surface navy battleship...

The Iskander probe only gave the Terrans the Wave Motion Engine, _Yamato's_ FTL drive. The humans figured out a way to use the thing as a weapon, too, and the Wave Motion Gun is kind of a bolt-on expansion of the drive system. Essentially, using either the FTL or big gun both puts them both on cooldown. Since there was a time and resource crunch, and they didn't even know if their experimental weapon based on a never-tested xenotechnology would work, they didn't build a second Wave Motion Engine for just the gun. Prototypes, amiright?

Admiral Okita's cruiser in the opening battle looks very similar to the TCS Concordia in the live action Wing Commander movie. The alien tech recovered by Kodai, in the original series was expected. The entire battle was a decoy to allow an Iscandarian ship, the Amaterasu, to make it through to a rendezvous on Mars... Again, so many changes made and none for the better.

It is easy to explain why "Bad Boy" got assigned to the crew. The Earth had gotten pounded, which means the HR had a relatively small personnel pool the draw from. Why the "Battleship" movie makes a little bit more sense than "The Battleship Yamato," is because Battleship's production crew actually sought advice from navel personnel, and then ignored most of it.

Only seen 2199, now I know what I wasn't missing in the live-action movie. Really disappointed they didn't appear to include my favorite part about the Space Battleship Yamato: it's 18" guns were hybrids with ye 'olde kinetic chemical solution still available in the breach. In 2199, I think they only used them twice: the first time to provide indirect fire around Pluto to get at a laser using mirror satellites to ground her, and the second near the finale. The anime used more of a hyperspace than a wormhole, so there were several instances of hostile action while in hyperspace, but the gaseous high-energy state of hyperspace meant nobody could use their energy cannons for ship-to-ship unless they wanted to blow themselves up. So naturally when the BBEG with his flagship follows Yamato into hyperspace after they start their journey back home, he calls the hummies barbarians when he realizes they're lobbing metal rocks at him with explosive timers inside instead of letting him ram them.

@@SacredCowShipyards Yes, yes, I know, old video, and old comment. I'm on an SBY kick. However, I think that you'll find 2199 will be well worth the watch. Yes, it's one of the softest science fiction series you can find, and it is VERY obvious that Nishizaki and Matsumoto (writer and artist respectively) were influence HEAVILY by the American Golden Age of the Space Age Flash-Gordan style of science fiction. The story was never meant to be condensed into two hours, and it is MUCH better in an episodic format, because it does have an entire story arc to tell. Yes, it is a soft science fiction setting, but the writers at least give the setting rules (such as using the use of energy weapons inside of Hyperspace Gate use being a BIG no-no). I think that as you watch the series, you'll appreciate the amount of detail and design work that goes into the vehicles, even if most of them are of course unrealistic. And finally, the soundtrack is just amazing. Oh, and the Gamilans have their background MASSIVELY expanded. Yes, they are a totalitarian empire teeming with individuals who will not hesitate to stamp out any seeds of dissent, even if it means wiping all life off of an entire planet (which is shown at least once in 2199, and yes, it's kind of horrifying). And finally, the leader of the Gamilans, Abelt Dessler has his own story arc, and there is this whole backstory leading up why the Gamilas Empire is a totalitarian imperialistic state, and the reason for the Earth-Gamilas War, but I won't spoil that, because I want you to discover that plot twist for yourself. Finally, if you make it through to the second half of 2202, you are in for one heck of a space battle, with some of the most epic music to accompany a space battle I've ever seen.

Space Battleship Yamato, in any of its iterations, is a case study in limiting the "Rule of Cool." Once you start asking the question, "why that..." everything falls apart. Eastern writing is bad in general. They generally don't trust the intelligence of their audience to put pieces together or make inferences on their own. Somethings are well thought out, while others are not. "I got a great idea. We'll give it fighters. And we'll launch them at high speeds. It'll all look so cool!" Except the launch bay faces aft, which means the >launched< fighters have to kill their momentum as they turn around, to lead the ship... Why not just dump them out? "Nonono catapults are COOL!!!" Ok, now I've taken issue with Normandy's forward facing shuttle bay, but a forward facing launch bay makes sense. "Nonono the front is where all the armor is..." or somethin...

It sort of gets the key ideas of the main plot but changes an absolute ton at the same time and... it's not as good. Gamilas is handled especially poorly, several quite key things are changed (they're not robots for one thing but rather a whole empire that has quite a bit to it). Not the worst thing I've seen though. (I also hadn't realised but some of the human ships (that aren't yamato), well... they look like the old Gamilas ships! (Aside from the guns anyway.) To be fair, if you're looking for ANY hard sci-fi from the Space Battleship Yamato universe, you're in the fucking wrong place. A) It's guiding material was a kid's show for fucks sake. Albeit a kid's show with a pretty heavy backstory, and could be surprisingly philosophical at times. If you're looking for realistic spaceship designs though, you'll probably come up empty. Rule of Cool rules the design ethos here (with a heavy dose of navy influence). At least the most ridiculous elements didn't make it into the film, such as that droid who loves to look under that nurse's skirt, or the chief engineer always sucking on bottles of sake. Hence every design flaw you can find reason to curse at. The lack of underside cannons. The exposed bridge. The giant, oversized prow. Some of these design flaws are at least addressed in future designs throughout the series. B) I had no idea that they redid the story with the adrift Gamillon, where we learn that they weren't trying to poison all of humanity, so much as terraforming Earth to serve as a new home (and the Gamillon hierarchy just didn't care - sucks for the Humies that they can't handle a lot of radiation I guess!) In fact, I recall the Gamillon trying to first escape custody, and then kill himself when that failed. And Kodai then went to starting beating his ass when he found that the Gamillon's were surprisingly human-like. And humans shouldn't be so willing to kill themselves! This was no doubt to contrast how much Japanese society had changed from the Imperial era, where Japanese soldiers would commit suicide without hesitation rather than face capture. C) The Garmillas Empire ships have ALWAYS had an organic design ethos. They probably will until the universe dies from heat death. D) The Yamato breaking out of the dead sea floor is an ICONIC scene. Of course it was going to be in the film, just as the animated show it was based on! Realistic, not so much... E) Humies bred modern cats from domesticated felines. No humies, no cats. P.S. I was laughing like a hyena throughout the video!

1:05:27 The running lights being color coded left=green,right=red makes no sense either. It's space; 3-dimensional; no up or down to tell you what left or right are on the ship you are looking at. You can't really communicate movement direction with 2 light colors spaced perpendicular to the direction of movement. 2 light colors _aligned_ with the direction of movement (that the white/colored light distinction on in-athmosphere airplanes provides you) is still very much possible without over-complicating things, and it would directly tell you the one thing you want to know first: "Is that thing on a collision course with me?". If you don't see the tail color, the thing is coming right at you. (Design flaw: the tail light is not visible from this angle, even though the craft is definitely not coming in this direction.) If the green light is to the left of whatever color is mounted on the tail, then the craft you are looking at is pointed to the left. For the tail color you probably want to match the color of the engine exhaust; which are either red if "cold", blue if "hot", or white if at sun-equivalent temperature, but usually never green. Also, space is big (i.e. minimal chances of colliding into each other). And finally, your direction of movement in space isn't necessarily the same as your bow-stern axis (or whatever the equivalent on airplanes is called). I.e. your position lights would have to have the ability to swivel, or at least change color - at least if they are supposed to indicate your _movement_ direction. And finally, finally, since this is the future, you probably only need those lights as a backup to some more precise collision avoidance systems, for which 2 colors may be plenty. So, yeah. Green=forwards makes way _more_ sense than the in-gravity red-green-white color scheme. Some mechanic should have a look at the bulb for the tail indicator, though.

@SacredCowShipyards
@SacredCowShipyards Год назад
Yes, I'm sure you're very proud of that wall of text you pounded out. Did you ever stop to realize that your aeronautical craft use red-left-green-right bulbs as they operate in a three-dimensional space? Ah, well, who am I to argue with that many characters?
@Pystro
@Pystro Год назад
@@SacredCowShipyards Yes, airplanes MOVE in all 3 translational degrees of freedom. But they barely ever really use more than 1 rotational degree of freedom. And even when changing course, they barely ever are rotated around more than 2 axes at a time. How often do you see airplanes pitching up/down by more than 20°, or rolled left/right by more than 45°? If the pilot has a choice (outside of hard banked turns), you can basically assume that the airplane is *almost* always upright. And the freedom to ROTATE yourself in any direction is what breaks the 2-color position lights. This means that if you want to keep the legacy color scheme (for example for cases where spacecraft operate in atmosphere), you could also (instead of adding a third color) add the rule that spacecraft have to align themselves in some more or less arbitrary way. Like "bottom towards planet" or "top to the north of the planet".

the large hatches on the lateral sides are meant to be recovery bays for the "Cosmo Zero" which had it's own separate launch system using the Yamato's original fighter catapults you touched on earlier. Small Recovery-craft and/or science craft could also be launched from there. And in regards to the fighter compliment of the ship. It was SO MUCH WORSE than what this movie portrays. The yamato carried some thirty, yes, 30 Combat Fighters (Cosmo Falcons I believe they were called.) and were stored via rotating platforms on a drum setup that somehow worked around the ship's main reactor and drive engine. Later renditions of the Yamato featured the Cosmo Marines using Powered Armor deploying out of a ventral hatch somewhere between the #1 and #2 turret wells.

SCS... You should have watched Yamato 2199 instead of this. There most of the things that you pointed out are addressed, for example: The smokestack on Yamato is a VLS silo. Those hatches on the side? Side torpedo launchers. The underside isn't defenseless because it is covered in VLS silos so anyone who tries to approach from below will get a Macross missile massacre to the face. The plane catapults are actually for a pair of experimental fighters and thus do something and the ship has a CIC (Granted it was only used once). Not to mention all the story changes they did for this movie because they had to cram 5-6 hours of content into a 2-hour movie. You could say that other than having a ship named Yamato with a crew bearing familiar names, this thing and every other thing barring the Yamato brand have about as much in common with each other as classic Star Wars and TOS/TNG Star Trek had in common.

I know they had to make loads of changed to make this movie length but really, it was too many. The big opening battle should have been out by Pluto, not Mars. Kodai was in the military and stationed on Mars, not a civilian scavenger on Earth. The Yamato's MD was male but was recast as female. Yuki Mori was blonde and was never a fighter pilot, she was in charge of bridge ops, mainly the sensors. Iscandar and Gamilas were separate planets in the same system not two sides of the same world. Many many more changes made, none for the better. The Yamato in the 2199 series did have shields. They were so powerful that an enemy ship clamped onto the Yamato and detonated, it did no harm to the Yamato. In both versions of the TV show (1974/2012) Earth's war with the Galamas Empire began after the completion of the Earth/Mars Civil War. The primitive ships weapons were designed to fight their own, not aliens (not right away) so the lack of AA fire against the Gamalas Plasma rounds is probably more of 'No point, since the AA can't stop the shots anyway' than directors OPPs (they could?). The designs were also a means to draw in larger numbers of people because those movie ships looked more like WWII dreadnoughts than other, more traditional space-based designs like in Star Trek, Mobile Suit Gundam or NuBSG I wont compare Star Wars because many of the SW designs look more compared to SBYLAM than anything else, either)... same deal with the torps. The TV series was made before they located the wreck so they didn't know she broke in two. They kind of just ignored that for the more recent remakes. In the 2199 show it was confirmed the wreck was on the old sea floor in the region of Cape Bonomisaki, where the IJN Yamato went down. The facility for construction of the SB Yamato was part of the underground "cities" that had been built to survive the planet bombs sent by the Gamilas.

The new anime series; specifically the 2202 compilation movie shows that the wreck of the yamato was raised in the year 2145, reassembled, and sunk again to mark the 200th anniversary of the sinking of the yamato. @nilok7
@nilok7 Год назад
At least in the 2199 animated reboot, the Yamato was never reconstructed. Instead, the humans hollowed out the space underneath the wreck, and built the Space Battlesuit Yamato under the rusted shell of the original Yamato to avoid satellite detection. This caused the upper level of the SB Yamato to inherit the superficial structure of the original. Most UN Spacy ships in the 2199 anime do have turrets on the top and bottom of the hull, with the SB Yamato being the main exception. The belly of the ship was taken up by the Wave Motion Gun, Wave Motion Engine, missile systems, and the hanger bay. While you will absolutely have qualms about the SB Yamato, I think you'll like the designs overall from 2199 better than the live action remake which are just weird. Rule of thumb for Japanese media, if there is an anime and live action movie adaptation, the anime will usually be better and more complete.

One point on raising the _Yamato_ : at the time this entire franchise started, 1974, no one even knew exactly even where the ship was, let alone it's condition. But by then the franchise and it's basic storyline had been established, so I guess the producers stuck with that.

WHYYYYYYY!!!!! \o/ The Remake is Beautifully done!!!! :D (Seriously you really should make an exception for 2199 and 2202). Btw what is the range of a torpedo / missle in space? Also the original used its main guns to shootdown planes (beehive rounds) so why not missiles. As a story of resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. I see no difference in the crew of the then Yamato facing the American fleet in a bid to delay the inevitable at Okinawa to that of the fantasy Yamato's journey to Iskandar. Except one failed and the other through writer's magic succeeded. As for the ship in the live action does not do it justice, to see what I mean you would have to watch the re-make (2199 and 2202) which addresses majority of the pointed deficiencies in this video. If you find it hard to fathom why one would willingly give up their lives in a clearly suicide mission, let me point out that these are the same people who despite of having their property taken from them and their families imprisoned - still fought for said country that did those to them and acquitted themselves admirably. Hence the 2 nukes to make them give up. Also unfair comparison Battleship is about "Battleship" - Live action Space Battleship Yamato is about the anime that came before it. And before I forget MORE PLEASE!!!!!
@kuhljager2429
@kuhljager2429 Год назад
The range of a torpedo/missile is totally dependant on how its made. A single stage motor on it makes the effective range only for as far as the motor burns. After it burns out, it turns into the equivalent of a kinetic shell, and you have to hope it's on target and they don't move out of the way. If its a dual stage or toggleable engine, the effective range increases massivly. you launch it in the general direction of the bad guys with the first stage, then let it coast. Once it's close enough, you toggle the second stage for the terminal approach.
@The_Viscount
@The_Viscount Год назад
Short version: the show feels more grounded than the film. I love it anyway. I love that the wave motion gun is, basically, an absurdly powerful laser that uses micro black holes as a capacitor. I'm a hard core fan of the series, realism be damned. That said, the TV show is better in designs for the Human equipment. Stuff that makes sense...well, more sense. Also, of note, any time you're taking a 25 hour TV show and trying to fit it into a feature film, there's a lot that will be stripped. That's actually what causes most of the issues. Unfortunately, the movie makes the UN incredibly stupid because they condense so many events and cut out characters. They did a good job spiritually keeping it right, but there's a lot of fascinating details that just get lost. Character moments, tech, world building...I'm gonna nerd our a bit here, and spoilers do follow. Originally Iskandar and Gamilas are a pair of twin worlds on the same orbit. Not unlike Earth and Luna, but even closer in size, the Gamilas Empire is, essentially, Nazis in space, and their ships and tech, while more advanced, isn't organic. The main weapon used by the Earth Fleet prior to gaining vacuum energy taps (wave motion core) is a particle beam. However, this is insufficient against Gamilas armor. Without a more potent reactor, there's a limit to how powerful the ships of humanity can get. The Yamato, on the other hand, has her primary and secondary turrets fitted with positron guns. These are entirely able to punch through Gamilas armor. Of note: the wave motion core is a gift from the Iskandarian civilization. They are more advanced than Gamilas, but they're also near extinct. The Gamilas tech is based on that of Iskandar, albeit inferior copies. This is why Earth tech has that huge jump in power when comparing Yamato to older Cosmo Navy ships. There were more powerful weapon designs, but without a good enough reactor, they weren't able to be built and used. When considering that the Yamato core is a genuine Iskandarian one instead of a copy, it explaines why Yamato is able to outperform Gamilas vessels with less powerful reactors. The Yamato was designed around a very well built quantum power tap and can simply draw and channel more energy for weapons, shields, and engines. TV show uses a lot of missiles too. If you're not gonna watch the show, at least check out some of the battle sequences from the remake.

Just a small minor technical note on "rangefinders" The turret mounter rangefinders were every bit as good at the primary and secondary rangefinders however being closer to the water they could not see quite as far when on a surface ship on an ocean. So targets had to be NOT over the horizon to hit. Still you really do not want to have battleships sized guns hitting your ship as they do tend to make a horrific mess. Also of note is large ocean going warships really aren't as maneuverable as folks think. Newtons laws of motion are in full effect and at speed most large warships tend to have a turn radius in excess of a Kilometer. Dontcha just love it when know it computer gamers watch your stream.. Of course you do.. not all Humies are stupid.... just well not so much stupid as phenomenally ignorant. It's a major issue.. I don't see a solution happening any time soon.

After The first torpedo salvos (which defeated Yamato's flawed torpedo protection - the other Yamato-class hulls Musashi and Shinano similarly failed), Yamato's crew never got the flooding under control - Japanese counter-flooded the other side of the ship to prevent capsizing, precisely because the torpedo flooding could NOT be controlled. It only delayed the inevitable, and every subsequent torpedo and bomb hit after the first Salvo of torpedoes simply made Yamato sink faster. And that doesn't mention the fires progressing to detonate Yamato's magazine.

While I generally love Leiji Matsumoto's depictions of space battleships as slightly space-ified seafaring vessels, I must admit that the lack of any ventral weapons on the Yamato always bugged me. Even his other notable creation, the Arcadia, has always been depicted with at least one ventral turret. (One of my favourite depictions, BTW, is the one from the more recent 3d animated movie that came of it. That one has a very interesting mechanism for bringing her armaments to bear on the enemy - I'd almost say the movie is worth watching for the brief experience of that system alone.) All and all, it's still important to note that for Leiji, the ships were always more of a storytelling vehicle than an actual combat one. So he was more than willing to go wild and send a zeppelin and a (I shit you not) steam locomotive, complete with passenger cars, into space. Great artist, regardless.

Ah yes, live action Yamato. First half of the movie was excellent and in my opinion one of the best adaptations of rather goofy anime designs into something areal person would wear and use, actors fit their roles, etc. Then the shark jumping moment aka reveal on movie version of Gamilus and how they handled the whole Islander and Gamilus situation - it's not BAD bad, it still follows the major story beats, it's just borin, uninspired and to a degree very generic. As a bonus fun fact, Russian version of the movie was sold as "Spcey Odissey 2199"

Personally I don't like the live action movie. It differed a lot from the anime. 40:32 The tabby ginger cat is belong to the ship doctor in the original anime. 1:05:16 Actually it's the present day's representation of the original Cosmos Falcon. Though I much preferred the SBY2199 version where the fighter has bubble canopy. 1:57:09 LOL. The side wrote "King Cobra" but the snake's color pattern is Coral Snake.

Smoke stacks on the Yamato contain VLS missile launch tubes, referred to as stack missiles. There are also VLS cells in the underside of the hull. So although no gun turrets down there there are weapon systems. Launch catapults were used to deploy the two embarked Cosmo Zero fighters. The remaining fighters, the Black Tigers, we launched from a bay below and between the two auxillary engines.

Satellites and other current spacecraft have radio masts / booms. And the Starblazers ships aren't the *worst* examples, they do have guns on the bottom and sides and such as well, but yes are essentially WWII Japanese naval vessels (for real in the Yamato's case...) converted into spacecraft, which is just dumb on a great many levels.

Along with hand rails I also saw spot lights! Did you notice the red lead paint on the lower hull? WTF? All the communist understood those stats but in the future can we use freedom units? 🤣 In their defense, the wreck wasn't discovered until the 80's and when this was invented it was thought to be in one piece. Bismark was found to be in one piece. I met a pilot that ejected from an old A-7 Corsair where you go through the canopy. He said he looked at the wreckage later and noted how small the hole in the canopy was and couldn't imagine both he and the seat fitting through the hole despite the fact that they had indeed made said hole. I bet the XO was PISSED when the brig rat was made CO. I love how in the future we have tires that can survive reentry! That APC just hangin out would have burned to slag! Many of your complaints of the live-action movie are valid. The live-action movie is generally considered by us (Japanese) to be non-canonical. Some of the stupider surface-navy silliness in the original TV series (anime is considered by us to be the same as live-action TV shows) was fixed in the remakes, but the silliness that appeals to our military-otaku culture was left in. Wing Commander's starfighters are inspired by Uchuu Senkan Yamato's starfighters and not the other way around. Yamato is so popular that the OG main theme is used as alternative and unofficial national anthem in Japan. So much so, baseball games routinely kick-off with the Yamato theme instead of the official national anthem. One of the reasons why Uchuu Senkan Yamato is so loved in Japan is due to the view that the anime Yamato redeems the IJN Yamato and makes it a defender of Earth, rather than a symbol of Emperor Hirohito's ego. There are four Japanese TV shows that are MUCH better at capitol starship combat than Yamato. These are "Legend of the Galactic Heroes," and its remake, "Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These," "Crest of the Stars," and the sequel of CotS, "Battleflag of the Stars."

@mprojekt72
@mprojekt72 Год назад
@@SacredCowShipyards As much as it tries to avoid the wet-navy tropes, the original LotGH anime series (main storyline, not the side stories) does have some massed-fleet battles that are 2D in the macro view, even though the rare 1v1 engagements are fought with 3D tactics. The remake (LotGH: Die Neuse These, running from 2018 to 2022) was animated with an eye toward a more modern interpretation of deep-space and solar-system scale battles between huge fleets of capitol starships The novels, on which all of the LotGH shows are based, envision a better thought-out approach 3D warfighting in space. Blah blah the books are always better yadda yadda.

I have not yet seen any of those four series, but I will seriously consider doing so. Especially Legend of the Galactic Heroes. When it comes to Japanese anime space operas, I almost always amazed with the animation and design work, and very rarely disappointed with the story. I would have to say that the anime Yamato has redeemed the IJN Yamato in more than just the eyes of your country. The USS Yamato introduced in Star Trek TNG (which was unfortunately and unceremoniously destroyed by a computer virus) was actually named after the original Yamato according to Rick Sternbach at AnimeCon in 1991, even though he and several other members of the production staff for TNG are indeed Japanese animation fans. There is also a Constitution class, a second Galaxy class, a Sovereign class, and two different class ships with the name Yamato in Beta Canon. So yeah, the name Yamato is at least a little bit popular among fans, and production staff. And it definitely helps that the writers for Space Battleship Yamato went out of their way to make the characters relatable and sympathetic, and that crosses over well even outside of Japan, and I think it shows how much Japanese society had evolved post Emperor Hirohito's Japan, even by the 1970s. Finally, I think that the Yamato's theme is like one of the best themes for any starship. And keep in mind that I love music, and is one of the reasons why I've become obsessed with the series. And on a final note, I don't think that the story of the Yamato was ever meant to be told in 2 or so hours. It is an epic voyage that needs a lot of time for the sake of the story arc and the character development. The attempt of the 2010 film was ambitious, but ultimately doomed to inadequately retell the story, and if there were ever another live-action attempt, it would definitely need to be in the form of a television series.
