That is one old 🍎 tree. A blessing and a pain about the "Good Ole'days". They never planned to far ahead because it wasn't promised but in turn our Papaw's didn't realize some things weren't the best. Back then though they really didn't know any different. Whatever worked mostly is what they done. Patience is a virtue and you passed. Thanks!

Do you keep hacksaw blades? A few years back, I dropped a 30 inch diameter tiger maple yard tree and I was sure it had metal in it. The sawyer had metal cutting blades, so he cut the tree up with a hacksaw blade. Took three times as long but I paid for the extra time it took. Sure enough, he found four piece of metal but now that tiger maple is some nice furniture.

At first I laughed and appreciated the sarcasm, but then I realized that is probably something that actually happens. Kids throwing horseshoes up in trees and not retrieving them...or maybe tacking in onto a tree as an ornament and letting it bark over it.

We had an apple orchard on the N side of Vegas, back some years ago. They decided to use the land for pumpkins or some other crop and had my son bulldoze them all down...probably 5 acres with trees up to 40 years old. Biggest tree was not over 8" in diameter...Chipped them and hauled to the landfill. Dang, didn't even get a few chips for the BBQ. So much for telling Dad before hand, 'eh?

I’m 74 have been in the logging from a child with my dad and after a year off after I graduated high school went into logging for myself. So I have also been around sawmills from the Amish to the rotary veneer and the high production mills. I wrote all this to say if a mill hits hardware in a log they really shut you off on buying from that job with out you have big wood and nice wood but they really look them over close. The local mills really don’t take your logs either if they see or hit hardware. I just wondering why you kept on sawing after so much hardware and the ruining of your blades.

This video reminds me of that one on facebook where they cut through the leg and water pours out and then suddenly part of a snake they cut through weaves it's way out. Hollow logs are often homes to creepy crawlies.. or bees. If you were to put that section of it that's really red right around the rot in a vacuum bag and impregnate it with acrylic resin it'd make for a really cool looking countertop or coffee table or something. You'd need that resin to hold it together though. Man, I need to get me some broken saw blades.. I have a throwing knife my Great Uncle Junior made out of one when he worked for Diamond Matches/Sierra Pacific Lumber and I think I need a couple more or maybe even a belt knife made out of a saw blade.. A little bit of family heritage needs paid forward. Maybe I'll even grind my nephew a little one.

Suggestion: (though I'm sure you have thought of it) Why not install a linear metal locator about a foot in front of the blade to sweep metal as you proceed.

Sawdust from an apple tree is really fantastic for smoking.

Beautiful wood! I wonder how many bushels of apples this tree gave in its life time? And now it gives even more with that beautiful grain. And some frustration with some nails too! Thanks Kindly Nathan! Blessings in and Out Of The Woods! DaveyJO in Pa.

yeah, but now she is using the sawdust as a litter box,

And later on when the shop is shut down for the night... the cats are probably having a good laugh with leaving you hidden presents in the sawdust. Ha! That reminds me of a comic strip I once saw by Gary Larson (creator of the Far Side) 3-frame strip. 1st frame shows two cows standing up on hind legs relaxing by a wood field fence. One cow yells out "CAR". Next frame shows the cows on all fours grazing as the car drives by. Last frame shows the car has gone and the cows are standing up again having a cigarette laughing about that car. You never know what these animals are up to. Haha!

Don't have to warm up the chainsaw but you have to warm up the metal detector...lol.

Greetings. New subscriber here. I metal detect every log from the valley floor. Timber up in back where there are no houses I do not bother. I do hit bullets from timber up on the mountain. My metal detector discriminates between iron copper and lead. If I get a tone for lead I just saw anyway. If copper I will saw but stop and pick the copper off of the teeth when I hit a copper jacketed bullet. If I tone for iron I dig it out before I saw. Just pulled out a 10" 130 penny spike a couple days ago. The worst is ceramic insulators. Throw the blade away when you crash one of those lol. I am sure you have videos of weird stuff in trees. North of me a guy found a loaded 22 rifle inside a tree!

Considering that the metal detector is flat and long, it would seem like you would be able to rig up a detector that sits right in front of the blade and once it detects metal it would shut off the saw. I'm probably describing something that already exists but figured I'd post it anyway
