In this video I harvest a Box Elder on the Wood-Mizer sawmill. The log produced some decent slabs with plenty of flame figure on both faces.

Just went to the website to see what you have for availability and just as I suspected...nothing. I truly am in love with that Box Elder bleed. I make boatloads of stuff...lighting, furniture...whatever my fancy...and I sure could have used some slabs for new countertops. I have (2) 2x12's side by side that I sanded the daylights out of, burned with a big ass marshmallow tip torch, sanded again, antique walnut stained and spar boat varnished about 6 coats that turned out like glass... It looks absolutely amazing but I really really love those slabs and could really use a new weekend project...a few weekends maybe...and some new open shelves for my 1940s replica kitchen. Keep us updated for more stock availability! Thanks and you have a great channel!

W-O-W, Imagine what stories that tree could tell...------------Excuse my ignorance, but would someone enlighten me as to how slabs get from point A to point B? I've never mailed anything but standard boxes through the mail. Used to be, you could send large packages through on the bus. And I've seen surfboards and golf club bags come down the ramp at the airports, so I'm just trying to imagine how Nathan's slabs travel!!!

A productive man working his land and using hus hands to work the tools. The blade turns on the tree, now we have materials to make a house, chair, table, fences, barns, cabinets, doors, floors, trim, musical instruments, bowls, spoons, brooms, roof rafters, walls, siding, window frames, handles for tools, and many many more. Awesome videos, it has to be very satisfying to work in such a beautiful land. Thanks for your efforts. Love the music. Thanks for the names of tunes so we can find and listen again. I'm happy to see that the tree is so beautiful inside. When I bought my house, every season, box elder beetles would cover the side that faced the sun. They'd crawl under the boards and live in big clumps. The bugs look a lot like the inside of that tree because they are brown and red. I never tried to get rid of them but they are no longer using my house as their mating space. I have it treated twice a year for carpenter ants and termites (the house is almost 200 yo), but they use pet-safe spray, probably borax. Not sure if that's why the beetles don't hang here anymore. Love your videos.

The crotch figure at the top looks like it was a forked top to the tree. Up here in WI we have a lot of weeping willows that grow quite large but they have a problem, the end up with tops like that box elder appears to have only more so. They are prone, the willows of collecting water in that split and eventually the whole core of the tree rots out. Looks like that may have started on your tree. Glad they caught it, the majority could've rotted out and left them with a very dangerous tree.

The red streaks in box elder are not permanent. I've been told it is the result of a fungus. If the wood is exposed to light the red will fade out in a few weeks. I've seen 2' diameter box elder logs at our local sawmill that had no red in them. A friend of mine put up some spectacular box elder boards as doorway trim many years ago. Within a few weeks it was a dull tan color. I have some small pieces I've kept in a dark drawer 25 years that have retained their color.

Funny how the "negative nellies" just appear :-( I guess young folk are no longer taught the concept "if you cannot say something nice, don't say anything at all". Well, the wood is beautiful but I hate those trees. They have their own personal bug. The Box Elder bug. Those little B#&(@*&@&s are a Major PIA. A neighbor yard had a small (~10ft) tree. When the house was foreclosed on and empty, those darn things began swarming. So, I drilled a couple holes, just above the roots, and poured in straight concentrated Roundup. At the same time, I sprayed the outside of my house, the empty house and a garage, with a slight rich mix of insecticide. It took about 6 to 8 gallons, before they stopped pouring out from under the siding, like black water. I also had to spray all around inside my house. Damned hateful and annoying bugs, they are.

I would watch this just to stare at your place! That come straight up from heaven and you knew that I'm guessing. The drone does it justice. I was born in N. Carolina but moved to Alaska which is beautiful as well and I speak southern but times have trouble catching a word and so go back and listen with closed caption on. I like to watch without it cause the words cover the picture. What I'm getting at is that Google don't speak it at all and closed caption gets a lot of the word that your saying wrong bad wrong. Sometimes you can't believe what you read but what you hear as you watch the video yourself an it will tickle you a bit I'm sure. Your gonna have to put the word in yourself or teach them to speak it/LOL. Since I am crippled and very old in my mind (72) I just can't afford to buy that stuff from you and ship it here. I am telling you straight, the cost of shipping is way over the cost anywhere but Hawaii and they get better deals than us cause they don't ship over Canada. Least I can figure. loved learning about the box elder as I ain't seen one before. I wish I was near some diamond willow as I would get you a cut of it someway... that and Yew wood, I seen some that was about a foot through and that is huge for that tree. Its not supposed to get that big. It grow in two places.. Alaska and Jerusalem. Chances are that your not headed there soon. Diamond willow grows in washington coast and canada and alaska. So's your gonna have to come west or see it on google, google has everything but spelling/LOL.Thanks for sharing

This is the Biggest Box Elder I have ever seen but they are a sub species of maple so I guess they can get pretty big. My brother cut two down in his yard last year and I remember him saying something about the trees smelling bad. I know I don’t like cutting Pin Oak or Piss Oak as most people call it because it smells like Pea. Pretty wood on that Box Elder though.
@Broody4Boglim
@Broody4Boglim 7 месяцев назад
It's not " ornamental " here in Canada it't engmic. It's usless unless it is highly flamed BUT nobody mills so nobody sees that it infact the only 2 things done with it is it gets cut during logging it's sent for pulpwood OR if it's on a farm othey are ysually bulldozed over a bank just to get rid of them. I had some turning squares and they turned and looked beautiful with the flame, actually lasting and I did buy one slab from a small mill who occasionally cut odd stuff and he's right it stinks (like cottonwood) till completely dry. I can say for a maple (this is after all Manitoba Maple by actual nam) it is very soft, but as far as turning, it turns like butter. They are considered trash it's not even sold as cheaper firewood because it gives if poor heat and burns fast....it's worse than white birch crap wood that takes the same effort to processand noone will buy it..
@markkoons7488
@markkoons7488 4 года назад
In SE Wyoming the most common hardwood after the cottonwoods is boxelder. Though sometimes burls are more than 3' across, they are almost always rotten hearted. Few boxelders more than 12" in diameter are sound, both rotten and bug bit. Pack rats use the hollow trunks both for nests and as hay barns. If you watch a snake investigating the creek bed for its next meal, they'll always check out the voids and deadfalls. Early white settlers sometimes made maple syrup from the sap but they say it had a bitter after taste related to the wood's disagreeable smell.

I think it's kind of discriminatory to be against rotten wood. You know, in some cuisines they eat rotten foods, so why would someone reject rotten wood? They would make a great staircase or a ladder rung or great flooring for a tree house. My favorite construction wood is balsa wood. Ants don't break it, so if you live in a colony of ants it's perfectly viable.

@@bobafettbv Mine had some sun exposure and it browned quickly on the surface. While it's native along the creeks in NW KS, it's usually rotten in the middle.

@@stevennoren6398 I have a non air conditioned sun room that I dehumidify to dry wood without being in direct sunlight. That probably helped me. To see how it would hold up I sanded an off cut with some red streaking to 220 grit and finished it with general finishes outdoor oil. I left it in direct sun from a window all summer, no fading of the red. Now that the lumber is dry I'll be planing and jointing them to get them square and then deciding on a project. I'll see if I get any fading during that process.

There is an epoxy product that can be used to harden the soft wood so that the entire slab can be used.

I hate the smell of box elder. After it dries it smells like an ashtray.

So if the rot is near the crotch you're saying the tree has crotch rot.

Box elder is one of my favorite woods to build projects with. Sadly it's hard to find sawmills that work with it.

Nathan, do you know whether that log is a male or female box elder? (Yeah I know, I thought the same thing...how can a tree be male or female? After having, as it turns out, a female box elder in my backyard, the box elder bugs were unbelievable. They numbered in the tens of thousands, many of them somehow getting into my home. Had to have it cut down. BTW, many municipalities across the country have outlawed the planting of female box elders just because of the box elder bug problem). I'm thinking at this point of being on the mill, it would would be hard to tell male or female but perhaps the person you bought it from would have an idea. It would be interesting to know which would "bleed" more, male or female. That is indeed a huge box elder. Mine was only about 16" in diameter.
