I just called my aunt to ask about how my grandfather took care of his cows. He was a dairy farmer 80 years ago, so he didn't have any fancy equipment. But what she described is a lot of what I see in theses videos. She said he would "follow the cows around ... pull up their feet to look at them upside-down ... use a tool to clean them and sometimes he would use what looked like a big nail file." She said that "in those days, the farmers were also the vets," so he had to take care of any problems he found on his own. It was really interesting to know that he was doing what you do with simple hand tools and a good eye.

Respectfully, Graham, I thought of something when you were speaking about how listening to the sound of the grinder helps you assess your what’s going on with a cow’s hoof. Do you wear hearing protection? I want you to be hearing your grandkids and maybe great grandkids when you are older. A lot of folks, especially men, think that wearing earplugs isn’t manly or such, but all sorts of musicians wear them, and also people who work on factory floors, working in landscaping, to limit their exposure to hammering, grinding, and loud sounds. A flutist told me that she and the other musicians are provided earplugs on a plastic cord every time they walk on stage. I’m a retired instrumental music teacher. Fortunately I realized early that I needed to wear earplugs - some of the time. Just imagine working with 50 youngsters who are playing their instruments right at you! I’m also a lifelong flute player and a piccolo player beginning at 36. I learned very quickly to wear ear plugs for playing piccolo (yikes). Of course you need to experiment identifying what you are hearing with and without earplugs. This isn’t a hard process, tho.’ Wishing you and yours a happy fall! Note: I think AirPods and similar devices do reduce ambient quite a bit. You just don’t want to turn the music or podcast way up. lol. I think that current younger seniors and younger folks will transition from hearing protection in the ear or headphones to hearing aids eventually. So far my hearings quite good. I happy to be part of your herd!❤
