The problem that often happens when talking about liking a thing that's unpopular is this sort of knee jerk instinct to get really defensive about it. Like you take the general consensus of people shitting on the thing as kind of a personal slight and thus you get into that aggressive fight or flight mode where you start calling everyone who has the opposite opinion a tryhard or something. I'm very guilty of doing this.

This really helps as someone who adores Persona 3 who frequently talks to newer Persona fans who haven't played 3 but have heard that it's an unplayable atrocity

When I like something that the internet hates. I tend to gaslight myself into thinking I hate it too. In fear of being viewed as someone with bad taste.

honestly this vid helps a lot. Ive gone through a lot of self-doubt and anxiety throughout a good chunk of the lockdown because of how the perception of persona and its community has changed for the worst. I love persona and smt, i loved to interact with the community, share memes, share my passion, maybe even some shitposting and simping but when the whole "hahaha persona fans pedos hahaha" thing blew out of proportion to the point people were unironically believing it, it started to take a toll on me. At that point, i felt like i couldnt even mention that i liked persona without being labeled a pedo so without noticing, i wanted to stop liking these games because of it. Every now and then, when anxiety wants to come back to me or i just feel down i go back to your "why i stopped using twitter" video. I think ive watched it like 5 or 6 times by now and thanks to it, i stopped using twitter. Ive been overall just better with myself, anxiety doesnt kick in and ive just been happier. Ive been enjoying the hell out of persona 5 strikers and i think i might be ready to go back to p5r and finish it

Let's be honest: Most of this BS comes from Twitter. I stopped using Twitter since November of 2020 and I feel so much better. Even though there are great people on Twitter and I talked to a ton of great people on there, they are being buried under the constant negativity. Not only that, I heard from someone that still uses Twitter that Twitter has been falsely suspending accounts that pretty much did nothing wrong. So let me get this right: Doing shit that is against the Terms of Service like harassment won't get you suspended for the most part, but people that did nothing wrong get fucked over? Yeah, fuck that social media platform.

This was a very good video on a topic that frustrates me. When it comes to unpopular things I hate when something previously perceived as amazing is suddenly "not good" anymore because a couple of people on the internet said so. When someone decides to trash something that was popular a lot of the time I see people who haven't played it agree because they automatically assume it's bad from what little they see of it and I also see people who did like it say they don't because they don't want to be ridiculed. It really sucks that some people have to convince themselves the thing they loved is no longer good anymore because it's no longer the popular opinion to like it. Sorry if this rant was too long but I really hate seeing how disgusting people are to people who don't follow the norm, it reminds me that a lot of us haven't grown up and still act like we're in cliques or something.

This topic kinda relates to how I want to eventually play Spirit Tracks despite hearing nothing but horrible things about it, because if being on the internet has taught me anything it’s that people’s genuine issues with a game can get overblown once they reach the public opinion

As a FF XIII and XII fan, yeah, i get this. I just like how they play and i really like the characters and stuff. I think theyre fun. Thats all really, dont need a whole essay saying why i like things like people on twitter expect, i just like it.

It's a great announcement platform, and there are probably other good points, but the conversations that happen there just seem to be overwhelmingly unhealthy discourse. I just like what I like and don't give a shit what others think about my opinions. If people get annoyed at that, good their suffering feeds me. If I want to debate on objective quality they'll have to deal with me wanting to define everything and most people back off at that point.

Sometimes it's hard to talk about something you like when alotta people don't like or care about it. But it's always fun to talk about unpopular things.

The thing that always pisses me off about the entire concept of shitting on other peoples interests is there's always this weird psychoanalyzing aspect to it, it's like "You like a thing, that I don't? must be derived from some kind of personal failing that i have now attributed to you"

You say it's very hard to convince someone that something they like is bad and vice versa. Well I hated Sonic 06, saw a video essay on it, liked it, saw another one, hated it, then saw another one and liked it again. None of my opinions are set in stone, even the ones like murder is bad.

While I do value disccusions about the quality of different types of media, the truth is that 90% of the time these type of discussion are worthless, since most people dont really want a discussion, they just want their views to be validated.

As someone who has Sonic 06 as a major guilty pleasure and who loves Code Vein to death despite a lot of people either not caring for it or just disliking it (IBlameIGNPartially) this is something I have to deal with a lot and I’m glad someone’s talking about it. Also even narrowing it down to just characters in the story, I love Yuzu in Devil Survivor but basically everyone hates her so even there it’s just kind of a ‘like what you like’ situation

The thing I realized is that normal people don't talk in tweets. The number of timrs I've wanted to maybe have a discussion, I usually just stop myself. People on the internet aren't looking for actual discussion, they just want their opinions to be validated.

The thing that can suck sometimes is that sure, you don't have to explain why you like this thing; but if the general consensus is that the thing you like is bad, it can feel isolating. It’s real tough being a genuine enjoyer of black rock shooter and blood c these days. Don’t know how people feel about elfen lied though.

Here’s a list of games I enjoyed and will explain why. COD Advanced Warfare-I’m a huge sci-go nut and when I saw cod was getting that sorta treatment, I was on board. When I finally got my hands on it, I fell in love with it. The movement was fast, the story was compelling, amazing acted, and it had tons of content which eventually got bigger down the line. I even beat some of the zombies maps and I have yet to do that with any Treyarch game (I also love Cold War for its zombies experience). Advanced Warfare even brought me one of my best friends that I consider as a brother to do this day. It’s my favorite cod game and the reason people hate it, are the reasons I love it. The supply drops in it were a plague on video games, but when it came to AW for me, I actually enjoyed it. You could get new weapons very easily through common drops and it was fair for me. You’d get one like every 3-4 games. Idk, I know that’s unpopular. That’s the big game that a lot of people hate, now on to some smaller ones. Mass Effect Andromeda, gameplay was VERY fun and had a lot of tricks to it. Customization was awesome and the graphics were amazing. Graphics, not the facial animations. Story was good enough to keep me interested and that’s all that mattered to me. Halo 4/5, gameplay was similar to cod but that didn’t ruin it for me. Halo 4 was fast paced and easier than any halo game. Making it more accessible than the previous ones before it. The story was FANTASTIC in its own unique way. I say that and I mean “343’s” way, not bungies. It humanized the master chief and made his relationship with cortana even better and more tragic by the end. Halo 5’s story was very basic and didn’t stand out. There were a lot of plot holes, but that’s not what’s amazing about it. The multiplayer on the other hand is hands down some of the best in gaming. You had so many options, the gameplay was a mix of old and new, the weapon variety was far more than enough, and the custom games browser...CUSTOM GAMES BROWSER! It was a joy to play for me and I even sank in 15 days on it. Destiny 1/2, they have their faults, but they’re games that have brought me so much happiness. The music, the designs, the abilities, the loot, the characters, and the weapons have made me fall in love with the universe. Destiny 1and 2 are my most played games of all time. I have easily sunk in at least 90-100 days on them both combined. There’s just something about it all that keeps me interested and makes me want to keep playing. Fallout 76, hear me out. The survival mechanics in the game I always loved. The simplicity of the food and water mechanics are not tedious and make it fun actually going out and getting supplies. With the recent new additions to the game, it feels more Fallout than ever. I’ve loved Fallout ever since Fallout 3, and have put at least 80 days into New Vegas, 3, 4, and 76 alone (Fallout 4 being my favorite and having 60 days played). Plus with 76 I can finally play the story content with my friends. It’s just a joy to me as a Fallout fan boy. Anyway, that’s my essay. i can 100% confirm that second hand hate is a plague because i swear i enjoyed both Rick Astley's never gonna give you up and Bleach as a child then disliked them for multiple years because funny people on the internet said its bad and then realized that i always liked the song a few years later and recently re watched bleach and genuinely enjoyed it even more than my younger self did.

I had a group of friends on Xbox that attacked me anytime anything even close to anime was mentioned I would be called a weeb I could be talking about freaking Final fantasy or zelda and that was considered weeb shit

Honestly I prefer to leave things as they are. I've always liked unpopular things more, not because I'm an elitist but because they have a different vibe, it feels more mythical, there's a stronger sense of community and it's usually cool stuff. Personally, I don't like to talk to anyone about what I like because I have a very intimate relationship with the entertainment I consume, it's definitely fun to have a good talk with someone but when I explain why I like it, it's like I stopped feeling it inside of my, as if I let it go something. Worse if when talking about that, I let the other person know that a certain anime or video game exists. Another reason is that the vast majority want their franchise to receive more recognition, but at the same time when it becomes more popular it brings some problems. When something becomes popular, people don't hate it just for that, they start to get sick about seeing it all the time and being a larger community means that there are more chances of meeting problematic people, people who have no real passion and give it a bad image to the community and therefore to the franchise. I already had bad experiences with Persona and Danganronpa, the games were relatively unknown when I discovered them, there weren't many people talking about it and you could still see a dedicated comunity, when the games began to be more recognized things changed, it no longer felt special, the fandom It was filling up with more disastrous people and in a whole they ruined the experience to the point that I no longer wanted to see anything from Danganronpa and Persona, currently I can't see anything from those franchises because I'm sick of it, I don't like them anymore, it's sad that they ruin you something you used to love. Because these experiences I am terrified of some franchise getting a little more attention even if it's for good, like with Yakuza and the baka mitai. Basically I fear the degeneration of a fanbase / Hobby at the point I prefer liking something in silence, otherwise it ruins enjoyment and vision, I stop enjoying something at the same level or totally when becomes popular because: 1-I like to belong to a community / Lodge with unknown knowledge by most people. 2-Talking repeatedly about something you like becomes tiring, you start to see errors that you had previously ignored, you can even start to see it as faulty. 3-You lose passion, you no longer see anyone with true passion or not at the same level, it is difficult to find it. 4- The mysticism, mystery, the unknown, intrigue and magic are lost. These are also reasons to avoid liking popular things.

I feel like alot of people don't understand the difference between objective and subjective. An opinion can't be objective because its just stating a fact. Like for example, saying that Sonic '06 is a platforming game for the ps3 and xbox360 where you control a blue hedgehog who kills robots, would be an objective standpoint. But if i were to talk about why i thought that the game sucked or didn't suck it would be subjective.

RWBY is my thing that everyone hates, I binged it after maining ruby in Bbtag. The thing is, RWBY fans also hate the show lol

Three things spring to mind when I see this. Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings, Sonic Adventure 2, and Juni Taisen. I like Earthbound Beginnings, and I was in for a surprise when I saw everyone else's thoughts on it. I seem to be the only person who does like it. I think it's still a unique and enjoyable JRPG, in spite of its random encounter rate. Especially when compared to other 8-bit JRPG's at the time. It's not quite as obtuse as people say it is, as long as you pay attention, talk to the NPC's and piece things together. Some of the melodies can be obscure, but overall, it's not too bad. I recommend it, even over the modded version (which accidentally threw the balance of the game out of whack and obscured previously clear puzzles). I don't know if it's because I played the game before Mother 2/Earthbound, but I genuinely enjoyed it. There's also Sonic Adventure 2, which is my favourite Sonic game. It's not quite "unpopular", but it might as well be due to things that deserve their own discussion, but anyway... Apparently I'm nostalgia blind for loving it, even though I'm well aware of its flaws. Even so, I played it recently after a 4 year break from it, and came to the same conclusion. The pros outweigh the cons, and getting every emblem felt fulfilling (except Mad Space and Death Chamber). I know the cutscenes look bad, and the characters look goofy, and the audio sync is off, but that doesn't really delete my enjoyment of it, now or back in 2002. I took those nostalgia blinders off, and ended up appreciating it even more. And lastly, Juuni Taisen. Aside from how misunderstood I think the show is, even if I was wrong and the show was a complete failure with some objective writing flaws I've overlooked, I still enjoyed the ride it took me on. It's animated beautifully, even when it switches to 3D. I would normally take issue with that very fact, but because the 3D is so well-stylised and animated properly, I didn't even care. I'm not one of those people who obsess over the zodiac, but something about fictional characters personifying the traits of each western or Chinese zodiac fascinates me. Like there are any number of ways a writer, show producer or game designer could play with that concept, and it even gave me a few ideas for a potential game. So while it's probably not high art, Juni Taisen did spark my imagination in that regard.

I enjoyed The Last of Us 2... I’ll admit some characters were dumb and some plot stuff was a bit underdeveloped, but I liked the gameplay, I loved the music, and even when a stupid scene occurred, I could just laugh at it and be like “haha thats funny moving on”

It's fuckin' worse for me cuz my friends will make fun of me for enjoying stuff, not because they think it's bad, but because they've *heard* that the fandom surrounding it is bad, and that somehow makes the show or game bad by proxy.

People just need to realize that enjoyment is not the same thing as quality. People can like bad things and vice versa. Just dont act like it's not what it is. Theres a difference between saying "it's the best" and "it's my favorite" same thing with "it's the worst" and "I didnt like it"

Most unpopular things are ok, and it’s niche usually hypes it a bit too much. A lot of this happens with SMT games. 13 sentinels a BIG exception, because I honestly think it was the best game this year and definitely the best narratives this in video gaming. The only thing I really agreed with the internet on this year was TLOU2 because I honestly think it had a terrible narrative.

I feel bad because I'm totally that guy. I take the subjective value of things and tell my friends the problems of those things. My stupid autismo brain doesn't realize how cruddy that is in the moment, but I just want a good logical explanation of people's opinions but that's sort of a stupid thing to expect out of people.

A few examples I have are these: Brave because I love the struggles between mother and daughter. Frozen 1 and 2 because of the earnest writing and strong development for Elsa. Kingdom Hearts 3 because I really like the story and characters (except for Kairi). I honestly didn't care much for the original Soul Eater, but I really loved Soul Eater NOT! with having the main cast feel like true friends and being a nice journey for it despite the chill tones.

As a Sonic Fan, trust me, its better sometimes to not talk about that, and i just hate how the media has come to this point when Sonic does ANYTHING and it has to be bad,

It goes both ways. There are some groups of people who will mercilessly pile on you for expressing a negative opinion about a popular thing, and only want mindless gushing devoid of any critical thought. There are so many types of people on the internet, particularly social media, that you can get a negative reaction about anything you say. Someone can always find a way to bitch. I honestly think that humans aren't really meant to interact with so many people at once, because it all just becomes this overwhelming blurr of noise and opinions. And people just turn off their empathy a lot of the time online, forgetting that there are other human beings with feelings just because their animal brains can't comprehend not seeing facial expressions. It really is healthier to just avoid social media and stick to a smaller group of people.

im the antagonists against Thor ragnarok. they took my favorite storyline from the Hulk comics gave it to thor and dumbed it down so much and just threw in a bunch of jokes in the movie. i understand why people enjoy it but i myself was so pissed off that they took a very serious and interesting storyline for the hulk and just made it into one giant joke.

In all fairness there are things that genuinelly deserve the hate.
