If you're told a book is "romance," would you say you judge a book with a different standard in mind? Like, would you be more apt to go into it skeptically and perhaps get blown away when it's better than expected, or do you approach all books as having the potential to impress you?

More than this being a romance or a literary fiction, this is an Akwaeke Emezi novel and that carries expectation, they're one of my favourite authors. I do do what you're asking too. Some books I'm just expecting to be a fun ride, other books I'm hoping to be thought provoking and other books I'm hoping for an emotional experience. If I'm reading a book which I'm expecting a fun ride and it is thought provoking or emotional, I'm much more likely to love the book, especially if it also delivers on the fun side of things.

This one’s definitely not for me. I enjoyed Freshwater but not Death of Vivek Oji. Still plan to try Dear Senthuran. Regarding whether a book can be both romance and literary in terms of genres, I heartily agree.

Dear Senthuran blew my mind. I was sceptical going in, because memoir of an author in their 30s, but they're so interesting.

Great review. I'm normally not interested in 'romance' books but this feels like a more realistic take on whatever 'romance' might actually be.

I just finished over the weekend and I loved it! I think Feyi's treatment of Nassir is on par with how she felt about him. She liked him, enjoyed his company, appreciated him and found him attractive...so they kissed. She took an opportunity that he offered "as a friend", as he continuously would say, so that she could advance her career, which was his intention as well. I think he felt entitled to her because of his generousity and expected her love and affection in return. Some women may be like that, but Feyi knew what real love was and she knew it wouldn't come from gifts and favors. Her and Alim shared the rare experience of finding soulmate kind of love AND losing it through death. Thats tough to compete with!! Nassir's angry feelings were so human and not at all out of place, but his physical reaction was uncalled for. No promises were broken, only feelings were hurt. But I ultimately think her and Alim made the decision that was good for them instead of missing another opportunity at love just because Nassir didn't approve. He is grown, he will get over it and hopefully find someone that he loves and connects with deeply in the sequel (wishful thinking? 😆)

Yes. I think Feyi and Alim's relationship was so clearly meant to be because of that death in their past, we could really see them connect on that (and the bisexual stuff). Nasir was actually really well drawn, it was very subtle of Emezi I thought to draw such a good man, who I could so easily believe became an aggressive fool.

Great review! I just read this and loved it. I loved the messiness and the way it makes you empathesize even if you can't condone the actions at times. My one complain was that emezi didn't seem content to remain in the mess and their attempt to tidy it up at the end felt less real. I just find it hard to believe that there is any getting past this for the dad and son, and it seemed like that was a consequence emezi was willing to give us but then they didn't stick with it in the end, at least not enough for my taste. Still phenomenal book.

I think I really see your point. Nasir was very angry, but it felt like he got it out of his system and then was fine. I think it was very hard to make Nasir so nice, then to make him so toxic and then to try and redeem him afterwards, that's a big arc and I think that Nasir had lived such a good life with no real misery or darkness is what is meant to make it believable, that he has no tools to deal with this and maybe he's actually alright but acting out. Absolutely agree it's phenomenal, regardless of if I believed everything I was completely sucked in and entertained.

It was definitely a cliff hanger lol but Alim and Nassir are family so if this were real it would definitely still be a cliff hanger situation. The dynamic of their father-son interactions are most likely changed permanently but how to do they completly cut off an otherwise loving and healthy relationship with a family member when they do one f*cked up thing? Ugh it makes my stomach hurt thinking about how Nassir might feel. Akwaeke could do a spin off with Nassir and Alim because it would need a whole different novel to dive into that mess 😅. Plus I would love to read more about the two of them!

You know, it's probably not your usual thing, but I think you'll really love this book. I think bisexuals are underrepresented, you're like 30% of the population.
