Great video, and I love your interaction with your cat! One can truly tell you are an animal lover by how you were in this video, playful and not angry when kitty wanted attention.
Your videos are real life and great advice... today I have to comment on "Baby Kitty". I also have a 'puppy cat', Ragdoll, that demands a special 'our time' once a day, then he's reassured of my love and goes off for other adventures around the house. We love cats, and seeing them on your channel, seeing they are treated so well makes me want to watch even more! Thanks for being good to your cats! (and, of course, your fish!) Give Baby Kitty a hug for me... she's a star, too!
I have a puppy cat Ragdoll , too! What was hysterical was when John was trying to speak with a cat all up in his face, my Jax (the Ragdoll) was rubbing his chin on my phone (I have to have a ring kickstand on my phone because Jax hates being ignored over it and will try to swat it away) but, between two cats at least I heard the video!😂
Karl and Baby Kitty...the bonus content we didn't know we needed from KGTropicals, but perhaps the bonus content we've always secretly craved. Listening to aquarium advice while watching happy cats makes everything so much more relaxed and laid back! Incredibly useful advice too.
When I wanted a new aquarium we talked to our rental agency before spending the money. They said if we wanted anything above a 10 gallon that we needed renters insurance of atleast $100,000. No big deal because we planned on it anyway. What is very important with renters or homeowners insurance is that the policy specifically states coverage for aquariums. Many have flood insurance but do not realize that the policy does not include aquariums or appliances. So make sure you have specific coverage.
I actually ended up here because of a friend. I got back into wanting fish and after 2 months a friend recommended this channel. She was like watch their videos they are really informative. Really your channel is the only one I consider advice from.
I'm here because my roommate left me with his tetras for 4 months. They're fine, but he left zero instruction and now I'm like "maybe I should try aquascaping" that's how far into the rabbit hole I am.
John, you are totally to blame for my "bigger is better" addiction! I had a 35 gallon tropical fish tank and happened upon one of your videos about making an HOB filter better. I saw you African cichlid tank and it was love at first site! I gor a 55g tank and some mbunas. I love them so much that I got a 75g and more mbunas. Luckily, we own our place. I've only had the mbunas a year, and I got rid of my tropical fish and smaller aquarium. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to move my 75 to make room for a 125g tank that my hubby got me for Christmas! It was going to be a surprise, but it's not like it's easy to hide something that big and heavy. He told me he wanted to get me a 150g tank, but his wallet had the final say. I never knew what African cichlids were, so it really is YOUR FAULT. Thank you, John!!!!
The one thing i thought about was weight. My Dad is a Carpenter and he said that I can't go bigger than a 40 gallon. Because we lives in a trailer. I'm glad you put this up
Absolutely! My dream tank is 450+ gallons of South American Cichlids...there is 0 space in my house where it can structurally hold something of that size and weight without immense risk (it's an old house). My next house WILL have a basement with cement floors that can hold whatever tank I want.
I'm very grateful that my landlord is also a friend of mine, and he has no problem with my tanks. He also actually gave me some shelf brackets and screws and lent me a drill to install a bunch of cat perching on the walls. Very cool guy!
Hi baby kitty !!❤ she is so cute ! Thank you to you & Lisa both, you guys have taught me so much in the past 3 years ever since I started fish keeping & you are so right, you guys motivated me 3 years ago & now I own 11 tanks total, & I’m setting up my first African cichlid tank right now making it my 12th tank 😊 I have NTS & MTS! Thank you so much for all you have taught me, your videos are always informative and fun!
When our builder caught wind of our plans to reduce non master bedroom to accommodate 125 plus the 40 filtering tank he advised that yes a water bed has just as much water but it is shallow meaning wide. A tank is deep and narrow concentrating the weight on just a few joists. We are very pleased we were talked out of it upstairs as putting it down in the family room means we get to see it so much more and the concrete slab has no complaints.
SO glad I just watched this. Unfortunately, I recently became severely allergic to almost all animals, plants, and foods-- I can't even own reptiles. My allergies trigger major blood vessels to close so avoiding them is non negotiable. My husband got me my first fish-- a female betta (she's my world) so I could have have a pet in the room. This led to more fish tanks really fast-- from 3gals (triops) up to a 55 gal (salt) because they were all I had-- I had lost many pets, most my stuff, and my career. We recently found out part of the cause was a heart infection from mold in the apartment (in a ceiling). Now we are moving ASAP. I never would have thought to mention the tanks to potential new apartments...Also, I found out you CAN be allergic to fish tanks lol. Fortunately it's just the salt tank.
I turned out to be allergic to my saltwater fish tank. And the ocean! Now avoid both. I’m thinking of making me betta tank blackwater for his health but I’m afraid of the mold and fungi.
@@quix66hiya22 Thats a fair worry, but there is hope. The species of fungi will be different like how different mammals are from each other so people are usually only allergic to a few species. I'm very allergic to so many common molds that I have to wear special masks leaving the room I live in (including the rest of the apartment-- I cant go in grocery stores at all), but I can have the fresh water tanks in my room. We use the glass folding lids that have a tighter seal just in case. Great idea about the blackwater. I may consider it for our OG betta, but keep her in a 5g in the bathroom at first for easy disinfecting just in case lol.
I have seen a few leases with pet restrictions, tanks included. Never had a tank while renting. Now that I own my house, my wife and I discuss if a new tank is coming and where it is located. This includes weight and potential water damage. I also think about would it take to move it. And you know that is the cat's video and house you are allowed to stay at as Manservant. I know this as the Calico Sisters own the house my job is feed, litter, and pay attention to them. All else is secondary. They don't mind watching the live TV, aka tanks either.
My landlord saw our fish during an emergency call for our bathroom and family room flooding due to him putting off sewage maintenance. He ignored the lease saying no fish allowed and added the fish when we resigned our lease months later since we didn't ask him to replace our damaged furniture. It was a good trade.
Thankfully when I got started in fishkeeping it was my cousin that got me involved 20 years ago. At that time he was my source for fish keeping as there wasn't a RU-vid. I did have in my apartment where I'm living now a 10 gallon and a 20 gallon long aquarium. I got rid of them because I thought I was going to be moving a long distance and I didn't want to take the chance that the fish were going to die. So I donated them and the aquariums and the stands and everything to my local fish store. A year later I got back into it but this time I'm playing it safe. I just have a 3 gallon that sits on my desk and it homes a betta fish and a mystery snail. When I do end up moving to a larger apartment hopefully soon or buying a home is when I will get a second larger tank.
I had this same situation. It was a very scary moment when my landlord told me I couldn't have my fish thank. It was all because the maintenance guy told them. As soon as I received that dreary email, I called them and negotiated paying more rent. They asked me how big is the tank and what type of fish I have. I told them the truth, 29 gallon and harmless small fishies. Their first intention was to make me pay 120 extra a month, but after describing what I have, they lowered to 30 extra a month, which I pay and since then, I enjoy and love my fishies a lot more. Thank you, John. This is indeed the biggest problem I had so far with my fishkeeping hobby.
On rentals and utilities - where I live, water is usually included because the water company is the only utility that can put a lien on the deed of a house for unpaid utilities. It definitely ends up in the home owner's best interest around here to pay the water themselves.
Things are easier up here in the cold north. If it’s a rented apartment the landlord is obliged by law to keep an insurance to the building which will cover all damage to the building if an “accident” should happen. It will cover all damage to other inhabitants of the building, carpets and furniture etc. It will however not cover any damage to the property to the owner of the leaking aquarium. He will need to sign another insurance to cover damage to his own property. But both the owner of the building and the owner of the aquarium will get their losses covered. And no, the landlord may not enter the apartment if he’s curious. He may enter if theres an accident happening and/or if he has made an agreement with the guy renting the apartment. And the contract of the lease must specific say if there’s a ban on keeping animals of fur or feathers or an aquarium. The landlord can’t show up later and complain.
Always enjoy watching! Just moving my last three tanks out of the house in to the garage. we are getting another 44% Price increase on electricity in April so I’m going to heat the garage but still keep the heaters in the tanks just in case. Just trying to work out the recommended temperature to keep the garage so tanks say warm enough. I don’t want to pay anymore for electric. Hope you’re keeping well
This is DEFINITELY the cats video 😂. I've been super lucky in all of the places I've rented and kept tanks. I always ask upfront and be honest about the number and sizes of my tanks. I haven't had any issues yet (🤞)
John great video. I have two 40 breeders a 75 gallon a 38 gallon a 20 gallon and a 14 gallon tank all in the Living Room. And a rack in the bedroom with 10 10 gallon tank’s on it. It’s a old condo with a shared basement hopefully the tanks don’t end up in the basement 😂
I hid my aquariums from my landlord; they were fine with them, even if Im on the second floor. BUT I had a 20 gallon leak. It cost me $600 in repairs. Now have to move, so I’m looking for a ground floor. Kisses to your guest star 😻💕
I own/live in condo that's on the 2nd floor and the biggest thing holding me back from getting the 200 gallon aquarium I want isn't just the possibility of a leak but also how difficult it would be just to get it up here. Honestly considering moving just because of this
lol..not yet! I just accepted the fact that I'm going to have to hire some moving company to get a large aquarium up here and the way vegas real estate is looking atm... I'm probably going to be here for a while so yea soo much for that other idea :) @@Katherine_xs
WAAAAAAAHAHAHAAAA!!!….. the cat was killing me…. I’ve had two cats when I was a bachelor… and they did the same to me constantly… cats are awesome!!😂😂😂
This was many years ago who my dad got me into this hobby. Started w/ goldfish. When I moved out OMGerd it was rough looking for a rental place that'll accept 2 125 gal aquariums to a point I contemplated of abandoning this hobby. This was in the early 90's. Luckily I found a rental to live in the garage with my hobby 😄
Wow man that "half my audience" joke! That just made you my favorite fishkeepers on youtube, no matter which side you're on, well played bud! I haven't purchased my first aquarium yet, I've been researching it for a couple of years the time is just not quite right yet and I want to take it seriously for the sake of the animals. Thanks for your videos. I think i'm going to do a 125 with a 40 as a sump below it and some type of schooling/shaoling species. Maybe barbs, maybe pirhana, then again, african cichlids are nice, I dunno man but I have time to deliberate.
@@reginaphalange9316 I think I remember Matt Walsh talking about getting into fishkeeping a while back... Can't be sure that's the guy he's referring to, but if it is I get why he wouldn't want to say his name, he's quite a polarizing commentator 😅
I had EXACTLY this issue this week! Honestly I didn’t even think to mention the tanks as I just didn’t see it any differently to having a TV unit plugged in! I got a slap on the wrist for not informing my landlady about the tanks but luckily (they’re in good shape and sturdy) was allowed to keep them! But great video, as it’s something I didn’t even think about mentioning!
Your kitty lol! I miss having bettas in 5 gallon tanks and 29 gallon community tanks but not the headaches. I love watching these videos for education, beautiful fish, and reminders why I still don't have fish. Better for the fish for me to observe than adopt.
Love all your Videos, I came across your videos and relight my love for fish, hand tanks about 10 years ago And just got myself a 75 Gallon, and already I want a real tank like 200 gallon 😂
Aquascaping videos got me into fish keeping. Thankfully I just redid the floors in my basement - old carpet to that wood like anti scratch vinyl. In January I got my first tank. Now I have 3 and if I had unlimited funds I would LIVE in an aquarium lol. I always said if I won the lottery I would buy a zoo. Now I'll also buy an aquarium. How else can I keep sharks, octopuses and jellyfish??
Big aquariums is a risk of course. Even the risk it will leak is small the damage is huge if it happen. Best is to have it in a basement or a ground floor made of concrete. If the floor have a drainage its even better. If I rent out a nice proparty I probably not wanted renters to fill it up with aquariums if its not on concrete floors in basement or ground floor. A small tank is ok but hundreds of gallons can make disaster.
I speak cat 😊. So the cat has no idea why you are meowing . That's what it looks like to her. you are just looking at one spot and sounds are coming out of your mouth. She thinks you are crying/meowing and she wants to make you feel better by kissing you and rubbing her self on you . Daddy its OK you don't have to cry /meowing so much I love you, she says 😄😻
People thought I was nuts for actually wanting a basement unit with carpet-over-concrete floors. It would be nice to be off the ground with a balcony, but I'd rather not have the anxiety of potentially dumping a waterfall on downstairs neighbors
This is a very relevant video! Brought up many issues that many would not even think of...after all... fish don't poop on the floor...right?. But like so many we love watching how much your cat loves you!!! Cat guru, Jackson Galaxy's heart would be all warm n' fuzzy:) Great video!!
I am setting up a 15 gal cube. I soldy my property years ago and rent a tiny apartment . I am on the first floor and actually about 30 inches below ground , carpet over concrete and I have separate renters insurance including flood. Good thinking bringing this issue to attention.
your cat is so sweet. I have a 50 gallon tank with 7 goldfish and 2 plecos. I've been keeping goldfish for about 20 years. Sorry to say I'm not such a good fish Mommy. I don't change the water or filter often enough, but although it doesn't look so pristine, the fish seem to be fine.
I am watching this while petting my daughter's Sphinx Cat. She calls it Ginsburgh, I call it Gingi, or Newt for Gingrich. I just downsized from 9 little aquariums to 4 little aquariums, 2@20 Gallons, and 2@5 Gallons. It helps on the miantenance.
I have small 5 gallon tanks, so I bought a carpet cleaner, I have never had a leak or anything tip over, but if they do its a reason to clean the carpet. I also at one point kept a mini shop vac. I want a goldfish sooooo bad, but, not gonna happen. I had my last gold fish for 6 years, I don't remember the size of the tank, but I think it was 8o + gallons,it was huge. I had to move and a lady was thrilled to get him, with all the fixings. This was before u tube. Lol..I found out how big they get the hard way.
Absolutely! It was really scary for me to go in and ask permission to have my aquarium. I was sure my landlords were going to say no because we have really strict pet rules in my place. 1 pet per unit, with very high pet fees. And I'm already over that limit (I have 2 cats... I already got special permission to have both of them!).... I really wanted at least a 29 gallon tank, but the lease says 10 gallon or below. But hey, all you can do is ask, and the worst they can do is say no, right? So I mustered up the courage and asked, and to my surprise they said yes! Of course they had to contact the insurance guys and investors who own my building and get permission from them as well, and they also agreed with stipulations. I have to keep the aquarium on the bottom floor only, and I had to pay a hefty water damage deposit. But it was totally worth it. Even in my place, with really strict rules, I got permission. But I can't stress enough how important it is to ask first!!!
I love your channel & the cats. I have fish & cats. Of the 6 cats I have only 1 pays any attention. And she's a kitten & as she matures she's losing interest. At first tho she did EVERYTHING she could to try to get into & at the fish. And the crazy thing was that the fish actually swam right up to her as if asking if she wanted to be friends. Cutest thing ever ! All is good tho - We watched Lily the kitten closely & made sure she couldn't get to the fish. She was quite interested in all the cords too which resulted in her getting her bottom smacked a few times, but better than getting electrocuted....
Offering up a better bed option for the cat and patting it trying to convince the cat of it's superior comfort...only to be rejected. How many times have we all done this. 🤣 She doesn't know you're doing this video for us, she hears you talking in a stressed manor and wants to comfort you. My black cat Ooky always knows when I need to pet her. Yes, we needs more cats 🐈
You doing alright John? I've only seen a couple videos, but I'm worried the stress is winning. You need to just sit in front of a tank and watch until your mind goes blank.
That water damage potential is why washing machines and dryers are often located in the basement. I do find it weird that anyone used to cats and dogs would ever worry about hair or even notice :) I am the landlord or I am a servant to all the animals inside and outside, never get to eat all off anything by myself, or even go to the bathroom alone. I checked our storage unit and found a 55 and a 20 long I have no place for "yet" that I had forgotten about. I swear I have a 45g corner tank buried in there somewhere too.
Yeah, this is yet another reason it's a good idea to have a written rental agreement and to understand what the rules are ahead of time. Often, aquarium and other pet limitations are written up front, so there is no surprise when the landlord sees your indoor pond
"Hours and hours of aquarium content..... hopefully ours" - yours has the best tank shots. Granted it makes me want a bigger tank......and I already have a 60L that is cycling with a 4ft tank awaiting collection next week.....i don't really need another one. Yet.
John, Baby kitty is definitely the star of the show lol. I have two cats myself your missing baby kitty emoji lol. Appreciate this video buddy. Definitely worth it to ask because this hobby can get expensive and then be told that you can't and now you're stuck with what do I do now. That would suck. Great advice and good reminders.
I hadn't thought about how damaging a broken aquarium could be for some types of buildings. In my country, almost 100% of the buildings have brick walls and concrete slabs or are 100% concrete, so 4000 liters of water spilling in my 3rd-floor living room would surely ruin some stuff and be a real PITA, but the building itself wouldn't be affected at all.
When we lived in an apartment whenever we had to have maintenance or the office come to our apartment I would put the dog in our second bedroom that I used as my fish room and say he doesn’t like people 😂
This was really helpful. I live in a highrise. 2nd floor. The owner's fine with my current 29g. Last time he was here he thought it was pretty cool. I've lately been thinking of going larger, and the "What if" questions are already coming into my mind. Thinking I prob will stick with what I have...well maybe. I will definitely talk to the owner before I pull the trigger. rather her a no before I spend the $$
Do you know any reliable places to sell my platy fry that will make sure not to sell the fry to a five year old that will put them in a 2 gallon with tap water?
I paid my property manager at my complex $100 to look the other way. I only have nano tanks so it was a little more simple than this. Best $100 I've ever spent.
That cat is cute as heck! Would you like another?!? My cat has killed 3 hummingbirds this week after escaping, he's supposed to be an indoor dude because we live in coyote country. And he's staying at my shrimp like he's planning a neo cardinia genocide...
