Are you a music producer and trying to build a home studio on a budget? In this video, I'll show you 10 cheap but essential things (under $100) that you need in a home studio. If you're building a home studio then you probably already know that you need the basics like a computer, a DAW like FL Studio, Logic, Ableton, and so on. However, there are also things that might not be so obvious, such as acoustic treatment, things to help you with music theory, noise removal, and so on, and that's what I'll be focusing on in this video. A lot of music producers are also constantly on the move or have limited space in their home recording studios. I have therefore also included some budget studio gear that's great for music producers on the move, such as portable midi keyboards, midi mixers, and so on. A lot of budget audio interfaces have limited functionality, so you can't adjust your monitors and headphones separately. A simple signal splitter can then be helpful.
Building a home studio isn't that complicated. The basic things you need are as follows: A computer. A DAW like FL Studio, Ableton etc. A basic audio interface. A pair of studio monitors, and or studio headphones. If you're also planning on recording vocals, then you'll also need a microphone of course. If not, then you don't really even need an audio interface. You can in fact make music "in the box" using only the onboard soundcard on your computer. However, I strongly recommend getting a dedicated audio interface eventually in any case. There will be a separate video about how to build a home studio on a budget.
Below you'll find links to all the products mentioned in this video, as well as links to basic gear you'll need in order to set up a home studio below that again, such as audio interface, monitors etc.

I see you’ve bought the ADAM A7V for your studio, awesome! Great ❤ video.

@FireWalkMusic Год назад
Yes, I just couldn't go back to using just the HS8 after using the A7V. I think I've become addicted to the clarity and detail they offer 😄 I still have the HS8 though. They are great for the price. Solid low-end response and very flat and neutral overall. They just don't provide the same accuracy and detai that the a7v doesl. I'll probably be using both, switching back and forth between them as I mix. 🙂 I suspect the A8H are probably a better fit for my studio, but unfortunately, I can't afford to buy them.

Another (almost free) option to eliminate electrical noise is to open up your speakers and add 2 layers of aluminium foil to the walls of the cabinets. Works like a charm. Tried this with mine when having issues with a router and/or graphics card
@kevintran9321
@kevintran9321 Год назад
I'm thinking this could have negative side effects. Why not just move the router? The inside of a monitor is treated with sound-absorbing material, and the cabinets themselves are made up of carefully chosen materials in order for them to have the desired acoustic properties. I would never consider adding a reflective material like aluminum foil inside my monitors as it would certainly affect the sound in unpredictable and most likely negative ways.
@MartinFellerMusic
@MartinFellerMusic Год назад
@@kevintran9321 I would have said the same. However, The damping material goes over the aluminium and does not (when A-B'ing) sound any different. I tested it with Yamaha HS7. Those speakers are not nearly is good as the price indicates. The cabinet themselves are pretty bare-bones. Maybe you shoudn't do this with really expensive speakers as they probably are designed in a particular way.
@MartinFellerMusic
@MartinFellerMusic Год назад
@@kevintran9321 BTW, moving the router did not work for me. It was still interfering when placed in the other side of the house. After adding the aluminium, the problem was gone

MXL 770 mic bundle $80 on Amazon, just arrived and I been testing it out. And i have to say the best $80 I have ever spent the mic is awesome and you get the boom stand, pop filter, cable and Isolation

@FireWalkMusic Год назад
Sounds like a good deal! 🙂 I've tested various budget mics around $50, and they all sound quite good when used for vocals actually. However, most of them are lacking when it comes to other elements, particularly drums and such. I've found that the at2020 is the best "allrounder" in the $100 price range. But of course, it all depends on what you're going to be using it for. Many can probably get by with a much cheaper tonor t20 kit, too. :)

3:08🙈 where should i put if i get noise when recording vocals (with interface on laptop) but ONLY when it is plugged. I solved it by only recording using the internal battery , but now the battery died 😅
@FireWalkMusic

That sounds like a classic ground loop issue. The gnd defender plugged into the power adapter for the laptop should fix the problem. :)

Hi, I used to think so too but there have been plenty of tests done, and I've also done some tests of my own. They show that they are ineffective in the lower frequencies, but they do a decent job at reducing mid and high-frequency reflections. If you have a room where you plan to do some vocal recordings, then foam panels will make a noticeable difference. Even thin carpets make a difference when it comes to those higher frequencies. You'll notice this if you move. When the room is completely empty, you'll hear a lot of reverberation. But when you've put in some carpets, curtains, furniture, etc then it is reduced drastically. Of course, those cheap foam panels are far from ideal for mixing, because they do basically nothing for the lower frequencies. But they do have an effect on the higher ones, so I wouldn't call it a complete waste of money. They're certainly better than no treatment at all! Keep in mind that most bedroom producers can't afford to spend $4000 on professional acoustic treatment. I actually have recordings of the tests I did with foam panels about a year ago. I was going to compare it to the professional GIK panels, so I'll definitely be uploading a video about that soon, and as you'll be able to hear then, they definitely do have an effect. If you're going to record vocals, and you're broke, then I would strongly recommend getting some foam panels to dampen reverberation. A mic shield also makes a big difference, because they stop a lot of the sound waves from propagating out in the room, thereby minimizing reflections off the walls. Is it ideal? Of course not, but much better than nothing.
