When learning all the conjugations, I also looked for patterns which made it easier to remember.

Agreed that we all have occasional insecure thoughts of "I'm not smart enough", or in my case that I suffer from some "audio processing" disability that can be so debilitating. I've learned to tamp that down and to amp up the voice of "Just get er done with consistent smart effort", and to stop putting a timeline on myself .... just a little better every day. Here you're helping further debunk those negative thoughts. Love your videos. Thank you for the meaningful contribution.

I feel like watching movies and tv shows in French is just way too uncomfortable because I can’t follow the story. However, I do listen to French music every day while I’m driving, which comes out to a minimum of 5 hours a week. It also counts as pronunciation practice as I usually sing along.

I used to do the same for 1 whole year but in my experience, I made little progress in that time span. In my opinion you just have to force yourself to watch movies and series, mainly because it forces you to focus for long periods of and you get to witness common day to day interactions. It’s best to start off with watching the show with French audio and English subtitles. Then after a few months when your vocabulary and grammar will have improved then you can switch to French subtitles. Finally, once you’re comfortable with that you can move on to just watching anything without subtitles. But please by all means, continue to listen to French music it’s still good to do that. Hope you find this useful

@@emmanuelndhlovu2874 I’ve been doing this for several years and I would say it’s working wonders for me. Sometimes I look at the lyrics and write them down to properly learn all the words in the song that I don’t know. Also, I found that English music just doesn’t hit the same and I don’t really like it anymore.

As a native English speaker who achieved a high degree of French fluency, I am extremely impressed by your accent. No imperfections I can hear. I am curious if native French speakers can hear your non-nativeness.

This is really correct my experience is exactly opposite to yours i have learned to speak french like a baby would learn it, I have done no grammar at all ,Thanks to my French friends who were very patient and after spending a thousand evenings struggling to understand a word eventually it gets better the fog clears .Your comment about it being a marathon is so true it can be very frustrating and then very rewarding when people say how good your french is .I still feel i have a long way to go but what a wonderfull experience ,I was 46 when i came here and have spent the best 11 years of my life here

So wonderful to have your insights after following the immersion approach. I'm following it more closely for Danish, but I'm not in the country of course, and I see how it works, in small doses. I'm hooked, but also prone to impatience! I wish you another 11 amazing years Lynda.

I think I’ve realised that my reason was never clearly defined and that impacted my learning. This far along, I realised that I really just wanted to learn to read French fluently, especially because my learning style isn’t conducive to online learning. I would need in-person immersion bc I have Zoom anxiety. That being said, I really CAN understand much more spoken French than I ever could before! Which is exciting, and now my goal is just to advance verbally a little more each day.

Nice tips! With 50+ years of French language study, I watch films and often repeat what I hear the actors say. And on a daily basis I translate into French what I hear in English, and try to use it again. I'm always thinking "what's the French way to say this?". If you have a friend who's interested, try using French in conversation, or parts of conversation

By exposing yourself you ARE learning. Keep it up. At least it's something. More and more data is coming out that says that studying the language is far slower and less effective than immersion.
