At this time I have reason to believe that Broken Anvil the company might not be able to fulfill their promises to their consumers. I would be wary of investing into their products until they prove to the community that they can keep their commitments.

Wasn't expecting such a blast of validation at the end. It's been a long journey for me to get confident enough in what I do to keep painting. The internet is a wonderful tool for inspiration, but it's also easy to demoralize yourself by looking at what "better" painters can do. I think we need more messages of self love like this in the hobby.
@justinrisen1929
@justinrisen1929 Год назад
I find that it helps to pick something that the "better" painter does and attempt it. Like one technique not the entire mini or anything. Helps me with the demoralizing thing because more often than not I end up learning a new skill in my craft that I wouldn't otherwise have attempted. Even if it fails at first I just keep trying it until I get it to a level I'm pleased with. Absolutely agree though that it can both inspirational and demoralizing. Scott's mentality here needs to be the norm. More vids like this would be very much welcomed.

Scott, I'm a day late to this video, and I feel bad about that. I'm a writer by trade. When I read back my own work, all I can hear is those negative voices questioning why I did that, this dialogue sounds forced, people are going to see that I have no idea what I'm doing. It's Imposter Syndrome. So many creatives feel it, experience it, and live it. Those dark voices are naturally part of the process for being creative. The constant questioning of choices made, tearing yourself down over perceived failures. You have an incredible talent that has been honed through hard work and dedication to the craft over a long time. At the time of writing this comment, there are 506 comments on this video, and 5.7k thumbs up. That's over 5000 people who you've entertained and likely impressed with your talent. You've certainly impressed me with your talent. I'm getting into the hobby because of creative people like you. I'm scared as all hell even picking up a brush, but watching you work gives me hope that some day I might have even a small portion of your skill and raw talent. Thank you for being you. You're pretty awesome.
@greenmann1217
@greenmann1217 Год назад
Labeling a critical eye pointed at one's own work as imposter syndrome seems hyperbolic.
@saikopro
@saikopro Год назад
@@greenmann1217 - It goes beyond just being critical. Being critical is, in my experience, examining my work and saying "I could do this better" or "That sentence feels flat, I should try this instead." Imposter Syndrome is much deeper than that. It isn't about the work so much as about you, personally, doing the work. Instead of the above examples, IS feels like "You're not a writer. You're playing at this." or "Do you really think you're not wasting your time with this?" It's much more a subconscious attack on the skills, ability, and education you've acquired to do your work over just being overly critical about something you CAN improve on. I was also speaking to my experience here, and hoping to provide an example of something that most creatives I've spoke to feel at some point in their journey.

Flip side on monstrous creatures: they can also be more forgiving, since nature is random and, from a human designer's viewpoint, "imperfect". Therefore you could play around a bit more with those subjects. Kudos to you for challenging yourself and awesome results as always!

This is so late but I did my first mini this evening. Went with a Skink. Things were fine until I got to the eyes, I lacked the fine control to do it right. ...so I did one eye well, then coated the other eye in a few layers of Blue, before scarring it up with streaks of red. It felt so good to come up with a way around a limitation, and have it fit thematically.

Man, this one hit hard. Painting miniatures is something I really want to spend my time with, get better at, and funnel parts of my creativity into. However, whenever I try or buy a miniature/box of miniatures, I am afraid of failing and then proceed to shelve the project for eternity. I set far too high expectations on myself knowing fully well that I will never live up to them. I always worry that I cannot give the model the detail or worth it deserves in my own eyes. In the future or the next time I go back into the hobby that I dearly wish to be a part of, I will try to apply what you said in this video. Thanks, Scott, your videos always seem to come out at the right time.

I just gave a mini I painted as birthday gift. The night before I fucked up the base and didn't have time to make a new one, I had to go with a plain black base. I told myself not to minimize or equivocate the time and work I had put into it when I gave it to him. I knew all the imperfect parts and places I wouldn't be able to fix or improve. When he saw it, he loved it, but of course I couldn't help but tell myself that he didn't know what true mini painting skill was and if he did he would realize what a mediocre job I had done. This video got me a little emotional. The message about being better to ourselves and the way we treat our hobby really resonated. Thank you, Scott.

One of my best friends is always amazed by what I make, regardless of how I see it. I recently made him is own mandalorian helmet and while I see every single flaw, he instantly fell in love with it (also saying it was one of the best gifts he ever received). Us hobbyists need to listen to those people more often.

This reminded me of a time playing 40k and playing with a new player at the store and having a good time. When I put down my 30 boyz squad of orks (the first 30 miniatures I ever painted what was thinning paints and washes?) And he mentioned how cool they looked all painted and ready to krump. It really is a little thing that's nice to hear now and agian.

Right there with ya mate. But I can guarantee you as a fellow painter your work is far better than you think it is without even looking at it. Keep it up and if it helps never stop. Have struggled with my own mental health most of my life... Never found a suitable outlet until I found Warhammer and have been painting for 5 years now and though I doubt myself too sometimes I have won a couple in shop painting comps so what he says it spot on... What you see is not the same as others see it because we are too critical of ourselves. Anyways sorry for the rambling lol Keep your head up mate and keep on painting. Cheers

The ending is something that I have had told to me by people who do not paint. The "Normal people don`t see what you see. They don`t see the mistakes, they see a cool mini." I`m still struggling to get that in my head, which actually puts a heavy downer on all my projects (I`ve got an incomplete one sitting for a week now, because it`s been a nightmare trying to find the energy to finish it) Thanks for the video, and damn. I've been through a similar experience. I used to keep my IG account with all of my paint jobs hidden from real-life people, mostly because I was self-conscious. When I finally opened it up to everyone and had all of my friends and family following me, the amount of compliments I got from them on things I had been critical of felt amazing. I also just want to say that your recent surge of videos has been awesome. I don't even play ASOIAF but your obvious passion for the game really came through and made for some great content. Keep up the good work.

I wish I could make money doing this but I know the minute I turn it into a job I would lose focus and interest so I can see how you would feel lost or stressed at times. That is why every time a friend or family says I should start a store I turn it down. I have not sold a single model but I have given so many to friends and family. I don't even have a model I have painted for myself at the moment since I sold all of my miniatures from my past when I got out of the hobby a decade ago. I only recently started printing and painting large stuff over this past year and back into miniatures in the last couple of months. You and Ninjon's videos have helped me rekindle my love for miniature painting so thank you for that. You seem to have some great friends and family to keep you centered which is a great thing. Keep doing your thing and your friends, family and fans will be there for you through it all. Have a great day and thank you for your time and effort.

A good way to think about it (that just came to me now) is to think about your minis as diamonds - the difference in a 'basic' display level mini and a competition mini is a lot like diamonds - the difference between VS (very small inclusions) and VVS (very, very small inclusions) can not be seen by the naked eye and, even with a jeweler's loupe require training to see. We sometimes live in an 'echo chamber' of painting where we only see things like Vince's almost robot like technical precision, Angel Giraldez's wizardry with an airbrush and Scott's buttery-smooth blends and assume that is the 'entry level'. This hobby is as much about the process than the end result (which is why everyone tells you to keep the first mini you painted). Embrace the process and it becomes more fun.

My two favorite things to do is paint minis and DM D&D, I've recently added a new player to my table, and after he created his character I bought and painted a mini for his very first character and man he was so happy with that simple gift, It cost me almost nothing, a couple of bucks for the unpainted mini and the time I put into it (the time was very well spent since I love painting) gifting him that mini was a great experience and one of the highlights of my painting journey.

HUGE THANKS!! As a spare-time hobby painter who grew up with two incredible artists, I've always felt a blend of positive inspiration and demoralizing intimidation when viewing the incredible works of people with more talent, skill, experience and invested time. The latter got the better of me about 10 years ago and I just stopped painting all together. I have loads of minis, plenty of supplies and enough experience to paint minis that, as you point out, plenty of beginners would celebrate. This video was a full circle experience of being blown away by the quality of your work (work you felt was not your 100% best), being inspired by what I saw, feeling intimidated to even attempt to get back into the hobby, then feeling the real human encouragement in the latter part of the video. I feel myself edging closer into getting into active painting again, and I'll keep watching your videos to help get myself in the right frame of mind. Keep on keepin' on!

Love how a video by one of my favorite mini painters came out on my Birthday. I'm happy to hear from you again, boss.

Dude, that man-hug hit me right in the feels. Especially since getting back to mini painting after 25 years finally gave me a way to shut down the world around me for a few hours. Thank you so much for sharing this. It means way more to me than you might think.

Thanks for this video and for sharing the places you can sometimes go mentally. It’s so good that people like, who are in the public eye share your own struggles. When we are in those places we forget that there are others out there in the same place, so while our minds tell us we are alone we are not! Thanks again and as always your minis look awesome. 🙏🏼

This is a beautiful video, on so many levels. Blown away by the mini and the reveal, people can be great. I can say that you're an absolutely massive inspiration for me. However, make sure you take care of yourself.

I know I'm a few days late but Scott I really appreciate your vulnerability in this. Not only in your own thoughts about your hobby but even regarding your relationship with your friend. This was a pleasure to watch.

absolutely love it. it looks great and this video has also made me think about what you said about how others see your art and you are absolutely right I get caught up in what I did wrong so often that I don't see what I did right thanks for the reminder

Beautiful painting. And the video is a form of art in itself. Add in the overall message and you have a great thing here. Plus, i think six hours of a friend’s time is very valuable... whether making a gift, helping move, or just being there for them.

The feels on this video yet, 100% true. That inner voice has made me stop painting for months because it creates anxiety. Glad I'm not the only one tha thas similar thoughts. Love the direction you took your channel with this year! Keep up the great job and don't forget to paint more minis!
