"You're All I've Got Tonight" is a song by The Cars, from their debut album, The Cars. Like "Bye Bye Love" and "Moving in Stereo", two other songs from the album, it continues to receive airplay on classic rock stations today despite never having been released as a single. Undoubtedly, one of the main reasons for its popularity on classic rock stations is Elliot Easton’s amazing guitar playing throughout this song.
Here’s what Wikipedia says about the composition related to Easton’s play. Rather technical.
The G to A progression leads back to the A - A♯ - B riff of the next verse. Over the B power chord, lead guitarist Elliot Easton plays a trill between the notes D and D♯, respectively the minor and major thirds of the B chord, which reinforces the ambivalence of the song's key. During the second and third verses, a call and response effect is created between Ric Ocasek's vocals and Easton's lead guitar fills. (Both of which are, increasingly, derived from the B blues scale.)
After the second chorus, there is a brief, melodic guitar solo over the chorus music. After the third chorus, the band vamps over a B power chord, creating a feeling similar to the verses, as a new solo gradually emerges. During this solo, keyboardist Greg Hawkes alternates between high-pitched triads of A major and B major, while the rhythm guitars and bass remain on B. Ocasek's rhythm guitar part is strummed with the accents primarily on the off-beat eighth notes, a technique heard earlier on the album, in "Good Times Roll", another song centering on the chords B, A, and G.
After the second solo, there is one last iteration of the chorus, and the song ends abruptly.
• The song was covered by The Smashing Pumpkins for the box set The Aeroplane Flies High.
• The band Millions covered the song for the tribute album Substitution Mass Confusion: A Tribute to The Cars.

Thanks, Mark for such a terrific lesson. I've loved this solo for decades...not only for the awesome phrasing but also how at the end it just effortlessly blends back in to the rest of the band. There's just something magical about how that happens. I've watched a number of your videos and I'm struck by not only your accuracy but the positive and upbeat attitude you have. It really makes it pleasant to learn with that kind of positive demeanor even when the goal can be challenging. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these videos together for the unwashed masses such as me...it's very much appreciated!

so truly thank you,sorry,hadn't had a text or spoke in a week.needed u to know I almost stopped playing n serious was goin to drink,n then I pictured your face n got a really sad original song that I started again.Only met a few teachers like you in my schooling or even in years of AA.Your a guy that wants to give this gift u have away.I call that being of true service to others. thanks Mark ur really helping this busted up old man., your student Big Joe!

Hey Big Joe! It sounds like you're going through a pretty rough patch now. I'm going through one of a different sort. So many of us have our own battles to make it through. Everything and anything that can get our minds and bodies out of that rut can help. I'm just an engineer (a numbers guy really) who loves to teach. I'm sure that years ago I thought I was "hot shit" too. I'm quite a bit older now, and the years of life have given me plenty to be thankful and humble about. So though I'm not a pro by any means, I know a good deal about the guitar and I like to pass it along. It really makes it feel great and worthwhile when folks like you give me a "thumbs up" and tell me my teaching has helped them in any way. Thank you so much for your comment. I wish you nothing but the best of luck and godspeed getting through this rough patch. Hang in there brother! -Mark Z

Another great lesson Mark, thanks. Yes, I 'liked' the video. Been learning this one for a while...it's all proper speed and phrasing at this point. Regardless of nailing this, I've learned some to apply to my own solos. Keep up the sharing. Thanks Mark.

Any chance you have the left-handed tab for this?
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 3 года назад
If you string the guitar in reverse as most left handed players do, then the tab is the same. If you leave it strung as a right-handed guitar then read the tab in reverse order: bottom line is the small E string, top line is the thick E string.

I have to at sir,after thirty five years of swinging sledge hammer,Jack hammers n many broken knuckles joints,my hands have had a tough road.I don't get frustrated because you take the time to actually show us how SLOWLY,WONT MENTION NAME,BUT IT FEELS LIKE HE DOESNT WANT US TO LEARN IT.What quite players do is such a high mark for this cold man to try n reach.But you my friend always leave me with a few of the riffs.This is how I'm getting threw a 24 year marriage dissolved,it's truly cathartic.I was so mad at other dude told my 16 yr daughter "I'm goin to Zabel,at least he really goes slow enough to teach.Serious boss,I don't drink or drug(little legal pot 2times a week)n if I didn't have this thing to play n u to give me hope,I had been thinking of ginger brandy,24 years since I drank booze.Straight up u r helping a clinically depressed guy get through his wife being arrested and removed for hitting me.6'3" 250 man n trust me I may never really learn a whole song.But I am saving my soul by plucking the painful notes in my head b cuz of your hey gang way of teaching.COOLEST N HUMBLE MAN N IM BLESSED TO HAVE U,CUZ YOURBWHAT MY WIFE USED TO CALL ME A GOOBER.I was the best builder of federal funded jobs in my state cuz I acted like u.patience tolerance,and support.Never thought rock stars would b like me just a nice man.N Keith Richards gets a bad wrap in press cuz he is a very smart man,n it was his book that brought me here.Been down lately.

Thanks for the reminder on Wouldn't It Be Nice. And here's Best Friend's Girl ... a little old and rough, but it's okay. Easton actually tuned his guitar up and played it in E position. Or was it sped up? I don't remember. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bQidjVWIfKo.html

AWESOME Mark! One of your best.......have a look at Benetar Treat Me Right if you have time....VERY cool lead in that tune. I LOVE great tunes that have more simple lead riffs. I'm not a big fan of shredding.....just sounds like too fast dirt for the most part. Look at the leads in Heart's tunes......VERY tasteful licks.

Thanks!! I'm in agreement with you about shredding. I like to hear the notes and melody. I'm thinking of doing Promises in the Dark soon. I'll get Treat Me Right on there too. Neil Giraldo was/is an awesome player.
