Subaru engines don't have the best reputation for reliability in the aftermarket performance world, but is it just the design that is to blame like internet Subaru experts claim or are people actually following some incorrect advice and information?

At the World Time Attack Challenge, Leigh Bird of Deshele Performance gave us some insight into what goes into building a reliable performance engine using a Subaru platform, and gave us some insight into his own approx 870hp Ej25 based build which is pushing 45psi through a Precision Turbo & Engine 7675.
Bearing clearances and common mistakes, oiling supply upgrades and head stud torque settings are discussed along with why Leigh used an automatic transmission from a Subaru SVX in this application. While we didn’t get in depth on it, there is also some interesting discussion about harmonics with 10,300rpm being hit in his own 8.80 second at 161mph drag application.
Also touched on is the use of nitrous (NOS) to get the turbo spooling to launch off the line, with a 75hp shot used for the entirety of 1st gear, and interesting all 45psi of boost being delivered throughout the run for now.
Also discussed are some of the engine specs for the EJ25 based build in the GC8 discussed, which runs a closed deck, 14mm head stud conversion, 2L 75mm stroker crank, longer steel rods and a single entry .95 housed Precision 7675 turbo.

Seriously used the svx transmission? The one I had constantly had issues at stock setup, and everything I've ever heard about them was the same. I'd love to hear what changes he made to it.
@3ToeCo
@3ToeCo 2 года назад
The earlier ones had a hard time due to a lack of cooling, the lazy/smooth 3rd gear shifts and lack of external filter. The SVX did get a slightly better TC than the Legacy did, but it was in a heavier car with a lot more torque. They added a filter and made tweaks through the years of the SVX, but an external cooler and good filter goes a long way. On mods: Valve body mods to get the shifts firmer and generally higher line pressures to keep the clutches together. Not sure if they have upgraded clutches/other internals in their units but I’m super curious! I have a 95 SVX, got it with a bad 4EAT for cheap. Put in a 4.44:1 unit from a 1998 Outback and it’s been pretty solid.

@scoob_dj

Surprised to hear that they are using an EJ25 running standard liners. Here in the U.K. we struggle to keep these engines going above 500bhp due to issues with the standard liners and the lack of material there. Even adding a closed deck insert, we are still seeing issues with the liners splitting. The US and the rest of the world doesn’t seem to suffer such issues.
@crxkid16
@crxkid16 2 года назад
Yeah that’s odd, there must be something going awry with how it’s being done where you are. I’m in the US and across all platforms it is a very good solution. Here at least they are cnc machined then pressed into the block and then the block gets resurfaced also they are thick. Like at least 25mm I believe even as much as 50mm
@scoob_dj
@scoob_dj 2 года назад
@@crxkid16 you are referring to sleeving the block, which is well proven for higher horsepower builds, as long as the machining work is done correctly so the sleeves don’t drop. I’m referring to the factory liners, particularly on the EJ25’s as featured in this episode. They are renowned for spitting liners, even with a closed deck conversion, so much so that respected builders in the U.K. will not look to push one past 550bhp. In the US, companies such as IAG rate some of their blocks to over 800bhp on the factory liners. I also heard no mention of aftermarket sleeves on the build in the feature.
@PolishAlexx
@PolishAlexx 2 года назад
You're not wrong. EJ25 liners are weak, even closed deck. The solution is longer rods which reduces the angle of the rod (up to 8.11%) which relieves stress on the cylinder walls. Long rod is a standard practice and on almost all IAG blocks.

😂😭I’m at game over after spending all my money on a new closed deck block and fully built engine since I wanted something super strong and reliable for my build goals. It spun a rod bearing at 6000 miles of normal driving only going into boost 1-2 times per drive while dailying it to work since the turbo is so large. So the car is just going to be a driveway decoration since I can’t/won’t be able to afford to fix it nor sell it since I spent $30k on the engine build and it’s worth maybe $3k with a blown engine. The worst part is nobody around me will work on Subarus and the one shop that could will only put their own custom built engine in that’s $17k by itself for a quote of over $30k. Sadly the block company and the shop who built my engine says the issue isn’t their fault and don’t warranty any work even though they say they do.
