You should try these fish with turtles!! Here are some more turtle tankmates that you could try keeping with a turtle. Keep in mind that keeping turtles and fish together is not guaranteed to work out, so proceed with vigilance and pick fish that are fast, agile, and not easily bullied! My suggestions include rasboras, corydoras, plecos, and more. As always, do additional research on the fish species you're interested in getting and make sure that they will thrive in the environment you are already providing for your turtle.

Remember that you always have to account for the additional bioload of the fish and provide proper care for them as well! It’s not guaranteed that these will work, but choosing fish that are faster, more agile, and less likely to bullied increases your chances of success…more decorations and hiding spots also improve chances of survival!

My mother had a pleco when I was little, she loved it so much and raised it from a very small size. She’d buy a bigger tank every time it got bigger until we had over 200 gallon tank for it and it was about 20 inches big. It died I’m assuming of old age, she had it for years over 10 years. It definitely was fun having and fairly easy to take care of.

I have a red eared slider that I got as a temporary resident in my home. One year later he is still here so I've been looking into really decking out his tank with plants and fish to make it a lot more beautiful and functional. I never wanted to spend a ton of money on him since I wasn't sure if he was going to stay with me ( he was supposed to be a temporary foster so I kept his tank pretty sparse and sterile), but now I'm committed to just having him until he passes and giving him a super good life. All this to say: thank you because your videos have helped a ton! Can't wait to get him some friends and a more naturalistic home.

I’m in the exact same boat! I got a red eared slider and I thought I’d only have him temporarily but decided that this would be his forever home so I’ve since upgraded him from a 30 gallon to a 75 gallon tank and looking to add a ton of new decorations, plants, friends (fish) and a nicer basking area. I’ve fallen in love with the little guy 🥰

@@emilybueckert108 haha I don’t have the funds to upgrade his tank size right now but I’ll be upgrading everything else. He’s pretty stunted as he came to me as a five year old who lived in a ten gallon tank his whole life with a regular incandescent bulb as a heat and UV source so I think he’s going to be the size he is for the rest of his life. He absolutely hates me but I love his lil angry face and I’m gonna make him hate me in luxury at least. 😤

@@cuteandspookycritters8691 haha well I’m glad to hear that his little angry self will have a much better life! My little guy is pretty chill and lets me handle him without ever trying to bite me. And the only reason I was able to upgrade his tank was because I got a really good deal on it. He’s pretty lazy, but that could be because I don’t think he’s had much space to swim before. The previous owners had him in pretty shallow water in the 30 gallon and I heard that the people they got him from only had a 10 gallon for him (he was fully grown by the time the last owners had him) I’m really hoping he’ll get used to the space and be a bit more active yet. What’s your turtle’s name? My little guy is Fletcher 🐢❤️

I have 2 Red Eared Sliders both about 5 inches long in a 55 gallon tank and they get along with an older 5 inch Goldfish and 3 smaller common plecos. The plecos do sometimes clean the turtle's shells and they seem to like it. There has been no damage and I monitor it weekly. Everyone seems happy

Also! Be careful - peopke buy little Plecos & don’t realize they keep growing a eat whatever fits in their mouth. They have “designer” plecos that don’t get too big. Corys & Otos & Loaches are smaller CUC (Clean Up Crew)… there’s no perfect CUC for all tanks… & some of them do produce waste - you should make sure they do the job you want them to do! Turtle girl, you are amazing. Recently I inherited two sliders (one of which was deformed due to lack of light, I believe) and have put them both in a 100 gallon tank. They now have a dry basking area with both lights, nice plants, and plenty of space. I admit, I fed them ten goldfish before you told me not to. Nevertheless, because of you and a few other resources, I’ve had all my questions answered as well as questions I didn’t know that I had. In the meantime, I hope my turtles are living happier than before. My current endeavor is upgrading their filter to a 200-gallon canister filter.

My daughter has a pleco in her turtle tank that has an African side neck and a Mississippi map and I have witnessed the pleco and the turtles playing with each other and the pleco will suck on their shells and the turtles don't seem to mind it. She has tried to keep a pleco in her tank that has a spiny softshell but it ate it both times she tried so she has since stopped buying them for that tank. She also has guppies in both tanks. They do very well in there.

I tried small feeder goldfish, then medium. Then I tried getting a few male and female guppies, a small bristle nose, and a redfin shark. The feeders didn't last more than a week. The guppies didn't last long at all, maybe a couple days. The Pleco wasn't far behind. The redfin has been in there for 1.5 years. It was a little aggressive towards the other fish so I'm assuming it's too much trouble for the turtle to catch. It's a now 2 year old painted turtle. I also added about 15 medium fishing minnows last winter. It ate one every couple days except one that lasted over a year. Finally disappeared a few weeks ago

Can I ask what is the size of your current tank, also for Hoku and the other turtles, why dont you have a tub like Rubbermaid 150 gallon for instance? I really want to get a rubbermaid tub, but I am considering the aesthetic and being able to check they ok, as opposed to them being hidden in the tank, but also me not being able to check on them, or see if they are eating well, check shell health etc.
@TheTurtleGirl

My current two turtles tanks are 40 gallon and 75, respectively. I've always just preferred fish tanks, plus given my current living situation it's much easier to have space for a glass aquarium vs a tub! I think tubs are great though, many many people use them with success. See DanTheTurtleMan, for instance! It's honestly more natural for them to be kept in a tub type setup.

@@TheTurtleGirl I watched a few of his videos, and a lot of yours, I see you are such an avid turtle lover too. So I always wondered why knowing the pros and cons, you still go for Glass over tubs. We do share a similar opinion but as i have an balcony, or sundeck, back porch in my apartment which is multistory block. I was thinking to either put the tub outside on the balcony or just keep the glass and put it on a rack, as I have my tank on carpet floor at the moment but I think outside would be better for them in tub or tank, as rack also means i can get a canister filter too. Thanks a million for the reply

Petsmart has a couple of 55 gallon tank stands that work well for 40 gallon breeder tanks, they’re sturdy and nice looking. I have two of them. There is a metal stand made for 40 gallon breeder tanks but a lot of reviewers say that the top needs to be modified slightly to make sure the tank is completely level. Some reviewers have posted instructions in their reviews and there might be some videos on here with instructions. I think the turtle girl mentions it in one of her videos but I don’t remember which one. One thing to note is a lot of reviewers say the metal one might not be the best choice if you have cats or small kids because it’s not as sturdy as a cabinet-style stand.

after using racks for a while...I'd say I'd probably go with just a dedicated aquarium stand that you can but at the pet store.

I definitely would not recommend adding a pleco. You say you've never personally seen the damage they can do, but I have. Also, you shouldn't have to personally see the damage before taking the advice to not house them together. I've seen where they've bitten off chunks of fish including eyeballs, lower jaws, etc; The fish they attacked didn't survive. The will latch onto a turtles shell and can damage it. There's also the danger of the turtle eating it and possibly causing internal injuries, as plecos have many spiny parts on them. I've seen a video of a pleco almost drowning a turtle as well. **corydoras also have spiny parts on them and aren't recommend to be housed with anything that can potentially eat them.

You can't really tell with hatchlings unless you know what temperature they were incubated at! Otherwise you have to wait til they grow a bit.

Please do not keep Cory Cats in a turtle tanks! I had a snapper years ago named Drake. At one point I had a dwarf cory cat in his tank as the clean up crew. Drake bit on the fish one day, and spit it out. Drake had impaired sight in one eye and lost tissue on the same side of his beak. Drake didn't eat as well for a couple weeks, but after a few months he had recovered. His sight came back and the tissue eventually regrew on his beak. The catfish survived the attempted eating.. but I couldn't leave it in the tank after that. Note: snappers often bite from fear. Drake was tame for me; meaning he acted predictably, I didn't startle him if humanly possible, and he was never aggressive with me. I also paid very close attention to his body posture and how he held his eyes when ever I interacted with him.

Some cories are thought to be venomous, though this hasn't been confirmed yet.

I mean possibly....you just have to make sure that if any aggression happens you separate them. A big tank with lots of decorations will increase chances of success

Asking here because frankly your opinion is the only opinion I've learned to trust. I want to get tankmates for my musk. I got red rosey minnows and now I'm reading all these terrifying things about thiamine and parasites in fish if the turtle eats them. What are your opinions on how serious of a threat this is for a full-grown musk turtle? Is this over hyped on the internet or credible? Is my turtle better off living a life of solitude? I want him to have some entertainment but I'm worried he's going to get sick from having fish in there. Thanks for your help!

You can try to setup an outdoor enclosure with a kiddy pool for the time being. There is a video from another youtuber that you can take inspiration from. I'll put the link here when I find it.

Yep, if you can't afford UVB, you can make an outdoor pool enclosure so that they can get natural uvb from the sun until you can afford more for them. There are videos online of how to make an outdoor enclosure safe, like by boxing it off from predators.
@TheTurtleGirl

good suggestions above! keeping outdoors is a great way to make sure they have sunlight and also enough space. best of luck!

Some plecos actually have plates of 'Armour' of sorts that protects them. Ofc if you add any fish to a turtle tank, you'll want to be cautious at first to see if the turtle does try and eat them, but plecos are usually unlikely to be prey bc they aren't super active top level swimmers and are very good at tucking themselves away and hiding.

They get large, and very aggressive too. It's a pattern, on many rheophilic cyprinids, that they're always showing aggression towards fish that even slightly resemble themselves.
