Coolest thing ever, my tiger barbs surround my turtle at night and clean off his shed. First day with the barbs had the turtle swimming after them, but it only took a few hours for him to realize he can't catch them. During the first night I noticed the tiger barbs surrounding his legs, arms, and neck while he's in his sleeping position (sometimes when I come observe he wakes up and they're right in front of his face, but he doesn't seem interested in them at all), and this happens every night now, and the amount of shedding skin that I need to clean out has fallen to none at all. Best investment I've ever made for my turtle tank.
Got 2 Female Convict cichlids,African Jewel cichlids 6 Moss Green Tiger barbs, and a red tail shark in my75 Gal Mississippi map turtle tank, all seem to be doing well together. This vid def helped and gave me ideas. Thanks!
@@SGBeardedAquarist I can't stop marvelling at it am like viewing all the videos you have in relation to it. It has like a complete representation of every possible trait of aquarium flora and fauna possibilities. It's the best example of a community tank with a turtle, schooling fishes, algae eaters, monster possibilities, territorials and a shark too, damn. I'd consider an accomplishment if i can achieve 1/3rd of the harmony with mine.
just found your channel and i’m binging every video, i can tell u put a lot of time and dedication in ur videos and i love channels like yours. keep working hard and always remember to enjoy the hobby as well. amazing videos :)
Best fish with turtles are :tiger barbe, silver dollars, red tail sharks (or rainbow). Cichlids are ok when they are small but not good if they bread in the tank.
Bruh same!! I had got my tank with 4 baby red ear turtles and some salamanders, crabs, star fish, and just a bunch of shit lmao I didn't know what I was doing! Bruh one turtle ate everything and he's now the king of the tank! Had em since I was 7!
My 2 convicts are still in tank fine after 2 weeks but I just went in tonight and seen that my male red eared had completely eaten the oscar and I thought he was too big that's in a 158 gal tank too
Thank you so much for your videos...my apartment doesn't allow pets aside from turtles and fish so I'm interested in having both and your videos are a big help in researching and planning for when I do get them
before i bought any expensive fish i bought minnows for 13 cents just to see how my tirtle would react w fish in the tank. bought about 7 and put a rock cave in it and my turtle ate all of the ones that didnt know how to hide or run. once my turtle knew she couldnt get the ones hiding or catch the fast ones she completely gave up so now i have 4 minnows living in my 60 g barebottom tank haha i think im ready to scape and add some fishes from this list. GREAT VID!
We tried that with our turtles too with the minnows. lol Only one was eaten & it's been about a month & we still have about 18 minnows left out of 20 that we bought.
A friend of mine needs to get rid of his red slider turtle. With the 125 gallon tank and everything else that goes with it. I’m excited to see Tiger barbs and other fish may work . Can’t wait.
I have a 120 gallon tank with a baby red ear slider turtle(about 1.5 years old),with 7 cichlids(3 dolphin and 4 american),with a school of neon tetras(about 15-20),with 1 smaller angel fish,and 3 gold fish.The turtle isn’t attacking them because it was living with the fish since it was a baby,and I haven’t had any problems.
Australian rainbows are also good fish to keep with turtles. I have four large turtles and the rainbows zip by them all day long. The turtles have eaten some of my other fish like tinfoil barbs, tiger barbs, catfish. But they leave the rainbows alone. I also have a clown loach which they leave alone.
Hi, I have barbs and clown loaches currently with my turtle, was wanting to swap the barbs over for rainbowfish but wasn't sure if possible! Its always a risk with individual personality but im thinking of giving it a go!
I have 4 red eared sliders and a 150-gallon tank...can I have all of these fish in there with them and is that an oscar, black algae and flowerhorn cichlid you didn't mention in your tank? If so, what kind?
Convict cichlods as you mentioned for me was the best combo.. i have kept Mbuna with res worked as well. My luck with tiger barbs with turtles not great lol always end up as food.
For me, its always depended on the turtle specie. Aggression and the want to eat fish varies from specie to specie. I always opt for a South Asian terrapins as they are generally more docile
I have experience with Ruby Barbs and my adult RES...she eventually ate every one although it took a couple years to wipe out a breeding shoal of 30 or so. I did have a filter crash during that so the turtle may have cleaned up weaker fish. They dont seem to be as fast or agile as Tigers and Greens
I find the rainbow shark to be coexisting with my turtle. I find the shark to sometimes be under my turtle and clean his shell or just follow him around while being under him and I'd say its a really good tank mates for turtles
My recommendation would be livebearers. I keep them with my mud turtles. Livebearers also let me keep shrimp in my tank.I would love to try a cichlid though.
@@SGBeardedAquarist It appears that they don't recognize them as food. The shrimps are also quick to get away if they ever feel threatened. I am hoping to make a vid on my tank.
@@Jose_624 Mostly guppies. There were platies and swordtails as well. I also have some that are not livebearers like small tetras, celestial danio, lampeye kili, etc.
Great video! I had great success with my eastern painted with mbuna because there were rocks and they can dwell but just an fyi for anyone reading this, as the turtle matures and gains size and more instinct it may be a matter of time before it becomes inevitable they will be picking off fish. The fish in my experience will be prone to disease from stress. It can be done though with the right size tank and even rock dwellers where your turtle will not knock over small decorations.
I have two mature musk turtles (several years old) currently in their tank and surviving are 4 guppies, 4 minows and 4 danios in a 190 litre tank. I'm attempting to plant it at the moment what else can I add? I was wondering about snails as I understand plecos don't do too well.
Great video! Thank you so much for it! I found it because I was thinking of adopting an RES to add to my tank. What do you think about an Oscar with the turtle, assuming the turtle is large enough to not fit in the Oscar's mouth?
Definitely possible - seen it done before. That said, I would place it as high risk both ways. Small likelihood that the Oscar attacks the turtle and considerable likelihood that the turtle attacks the oscar (cause it's not a very active or fast swimmer). So unless the turtle is one of those super mild ones that doesnt chase any fish at all, success really hinges on the turtle being interested in the Oscar and the oscar defending itself enough for the turtle to learn it's not food. Worth the try if it's a new oscar you have no attachment to. Wouldnt risk it if it's an oscar you dont want to lose.
SG Bearded Aquarist thanks for the reply! Hmm I am attached to that silly Oscar so maybe not then. Curious about how an RES eats though. Do they chase and nip / bite / tear or try to swallow whole?
@@terrachua3925 I find they tend to tag their prey, i.e. take bites out of the tail until the fish is impaired enough that they can go in for the kill.
It’s not about “keeping fish with turtles” it’s about “keeping fish with a potential predator” You can run into many of these problems with ducks as well
I bought some tiger barbs to go with my turtles but end up half of them are eaten in 3 days. I should suggest not to get the albino tiger barbs which are orange/red in colour which the turtle will think it’s prawn for them
My sideneck turtle has fake plants in his tank. He has knocked the one down several times. Finally i just took it out. Im actually watching these videos because i have a 55 gallon tank and the turtle by himself.
I was looking to add a turtle to my 55 gallon tank that right now has 2 full grown blood parrots. They certainly are a pair have had them for 6 years now. They no longer lay eggs so I’m thinking they may not mind something else in the tank now. I’m interested in hearing what you might say about that!
It's doable. Something you really want to consider is how sentimental are your blood parrots to you? Are they pets you have grown an attachment to? If so, i wouldn't recommend it as there's always a risk and although adding the turtle after the fish usually increases chances of success, i wouldn't recommend for such cases because unlike adding new fish where you can simply see the loss as "food" or circle of life, it might not be worth it for fish you've had for awhile. But of course this is your decision to make. From a feasibility standpoint, definitely possible.
what would you think about having mollies/swordtail with a musk turtle? I was thinking about getting a turtle and some fish with the smallest being them.
Hi! Can you give me stocking recommendations for a 55 gallon with a slider turtle (currently he's about 3 inches). How many tiger barbs, blood parrots, clown loaches of each do you think I could get? I'm thinking of a getting a canister filter- penn plax for at least 75-100 gallon
What about rainbowfish? I know they may not work with cichlids but I saw some in the beginning of the video. They’re pretty fast so I was hoping they could work with turtles
This fish keeper made a video about fish compatibility with turtles. The best fish to keep with turtles are those that... 1. Have short fins and can dart quickly, rather than those with long, flowing fins. 2. Are active. Fish that spend a lot of their time resting are not good choices. 3. Are intelligent enough to dart away from the turtle, rather than only trying to escape when attacked. It's up to you to provide the last two necessities... Shelter - It must not only be present but dense. Decorations not only shelter the fish but also provide a more interesting scape. The more bored the turtle is, the more time it will spend chasing the fish. Space - A turtle that's not cramped in its aquarium will spend more time away from the fish. It also provide the fish somewhere else to go when the turtle is in one spot. Rainbowfish would probably work if the tank is very large and well-sheltered. Keep in mind also that if the turtle is a RES that the older it gets, the less aggressively predatory it will be (although it will always be a threat).
looking at get a snapper and setting up a eco system, what do you recommend for the clean up crew will evenvualy be in a 130 gallon. Was thing snails shrimp crayfish
I have my baby cooter Maui living with a betta sorority, he has no interest what so ever and the girls behave, im sure because they have him kinda breaking up the commotion when they are all together, this is also in a 20 gallon with double filtration, sponge and hang filter, eventually want him in a 150gallon in the next few months.
The video touches on this but I just want to emphasize: if you keep multiple convicts and/or blood parrots in with your turtle, make sure they're either all male or all female, otherwise they WILL go into breeding mode. Convicts and blood parrots will absolutely try to breed with each other, and will fight off same-sex competitors aggressively in the presence of the opposite sex. They will also fight everything that moves as soon as eggs are laid, including your turtle. Even if they don't manage to seriously harm anybody, they can stress themselves and others out to the point of illness. If you really want to try breeding them, please do it in a separate tank!
Has your turtle ever ate any of the fish? Any other suggestions? I already got a rainbow shark and blood parrots for my turtles that’s are coming soon..
Yeap. This usually happens within the first 24hrs. Fish that survive the first 24 hours usually do fine 95% of the time. Barbs and cichlids in general are a good fish to keep with turtles. Barbs because of their activity level and cichlids because of their aggression and intelligence. This is a generalization, may vary on the species.
SG Bearded Aquarist omg you replied! My favorite aquatic RU-vidr!! I’m getting every species of painted turtles with fish in a tank, I will for sure get convicts and other fish you said in the video, should I get a gourami?
Recently i changed the aquarium of my turtle Because of parrot and timber bar fish he was not able to eat food, now there is only one problem that the turtle does not go to the basking area, 24hrs stays in the water, due to this is he becomes ill?? it's been 15 days since the aquarium was changed,..
Dude I have 4 oscars nice setup I could send u images if u provide a way I have 2 (Tim,Tom)turtles 1 (Tim)of them is cute and stays with fish but other one no never oscars 70 gallon tank I want Tim to be in aquarium pls advice according to my setup Tim destroys my decor especially my tied down driftwood
So I have a 55 gallon tank that has nothing in it right now but I will put my 1 yellow bellied sliders and a blood parrot a convict and maby a fire mouth cichlids is there any room for any other fish if so what and are fire mouths ok with my turtles
Hey i have a 6 year turtle it’s pretty tiny it is on a 10 gallon tank what fish can I put with her it’s her first time having fish tank mates she only has a snail tank mate
How big is the tank in this video? New to your channel learned a lot from this vid. I have 2 red ear sliders and they just seem to catch everything. So maybe I’ll have some luck with these types of fish.
SG Bearded Aquarist currently have a 55gal myself and I’ve tried Oscars, Gold fish, angle fish, always stick a bunch of minos in there, guppies and even tho my sucker fish survived 8 years and was about 8 inches long they finally got him too :/
Hey man I was curious what size tank that you had kinda been going off what you have except I have 4 red ear sliders 2 oscars a convict cichlid big plecco and small I have a 80 gallon tank with big basking area
I have a reeves turtle, I bought 6 tiger barbs varying in size, and my turtle ate them all, would you advise any other types of fish to be added or to stay away from adding anymore
He has another video with tips on introducing fish to the turtle tank that you would probably find useful. I find it makes a big difference with Reeves.
