I was reading the comments and realised that people do actually give Rohan the credit he deserves. This is surprisingly satisfying because mostly i hear people saying that he doesn't have a sense of humor and that he is yet another previlaged guy from south bombay. I really started appreciating him after watching him being the judge at QUEENS OF comedy. I love the way he looks at things and the way he keeps it real. Check out his Insta.
The worst bit is people who really need to hear (and introspect from) this podcast would neither bother clicking an hour+ long video nor would they actually listen with an open mind... Rohan Joshi, a request: start your own podcast (you are very open about what your biases are and a good listener - in my opinion, fantastic qualities of a podcast host)...
Rohan is talking about the jain and gujju cartel in south mumbai. Me being a jain, most people of my community are extremely close minded and extremists with anything to do with meat.
Yes. They are cheeky little fuckers who make entire society follow their dietary restrictions and in turn are making non Jains and non gujjus leave the area. It's annoying and frustrating.
Religious elements ruining the cause against animal abuse and sustainability. Not surprisingly, Rohan knows quiet a lot so he offered no justification for his diet. Daniel's justification was his upbringing and Sharul's justification was freedom of choice. Good to see them discussing about it.
I want to know how Rohan is so sorted. After talking about him been blamed for sexual harassment falsely, he so promptly and earnestly says that it would take 50 thousand women to stand up for people to believe. Love him.
Daniel, once again an amazing podcast. Loved it. Thank you for bringing in Rohan Joshi - he is a profiling speaker. And thank you for introducing Sharul to me. The thing is - in nature survival depends on feasting on other living things - it can be plants, animals or both. That’s how nature made us. Period.
It's so good to have a voice like Roham Joshi's. I need him to speak more often about more stuff. AND I NEED TO WATCH HIM LIVE FUCK MY FRIENDS THEY KEEP CANCELLING AND FUCK MY SCHEDULE FOR NOT LETTING ME DECIDE ON OTHER DAYS AND UGH. But yeah, I love Rohan Joshi, I think I gots a crush on hims for a while now but the non creepy crush where I don't even have him on Snapchat and I don't really watch his stories over and over. I have a sane crush on him. You know? Where I'm like oh,okay, this guy is cool and a really good listener and I've not seen/heard/met anyone who recognizes the differences in people on so many levels and respects and acknowledges that as much he does. The crazy part is I wouldn't mind hanging out with him and his girlfriend because ugh I need cool people to hang out with, pleej, thank you. Who am I even talking to? Lol anyway, you get my point, v good podcast, that BoTcast with mojorojo was really good too
Reposting this from the episode with Anuvab Pal and Shilpa Rathnam. I don't eat rice simply because I don't like it. I haven't eaten it since I had a say in what I ate at the age of 5 and I'm 26 now. Same for mangoes. I simply don't like them. When people first find out I get the same reaction that I get when I tell non vegetarians that I'm vegetarian. I think part of it stems from genuine shock and disbelief that you don't eat the staple bliss that is rice or the magical food that is a mango. I get asked to try eating rice with the same intensity (probably more) as I get asked to try chicken. The difference however is with the questioning that follows about being a vegetarian. Its attributable to the fact that in India food preferences are also influenced by religion and family. A lot of times being a vegetarian is not your choice. A lot of times people hide the fact that they eat non vegetarian outside of their home. And this is an issue exclusive to Indians. So now when I get asked about my food choices with all the questions that follow somewhere I am also being judged for how progressive and open minded my family and I are. Vegetarian cause you are Hindu? (No. Cause I don't like it ) Vegetarian cause your family doesn't allow it? (My dad and my brothers eat all kinds of non vegetarian) So your mom isn't allowed to eat cause she is a female? ( No she doesn't eat cause she believes in being a vegetarian and also cause she is religious. She can't imagine that this piece of food was alive) Can you eat at home? (Yes, but you can't cook on the stove cause it's worshipped every year. You can put it in the oven and microwave though. ) Does she sit with you when your brothers and father eat? (Yes she does. Cause she also happens to be a sane woman who knows each person's choice and belief can differ even within a family of 5) So I believe the questions that follow about your religion are partially to know if that has influenced or forced you in any way. And as far as the relationships not working because of food preferences goes, it is still an issue in today's day and age because we still marry into a house. Nuclear families and live in relationships make up a small percentage of our demographic. If a non vegetarian is marrying into a strict conservative vegetarian family, it is a problem. They aren't going to be accepting about your food preferences. I even know of families who won't eat at places that serve non vegetarian simply because they do believe that it's wrong to harm another living animal and by eating even vegetarian food at that place you'll be supporting someone who commits the sin of slaughter. And that's fair. But then it's upto the person to decide if they can live the rest of their life with eating only at vegetarian places with their partner. And a breakup wouldn't surprise me cause it's a huge part of your life. Similarly for renting out an apartment, by letting it out to someone who is a non vegetarian, they believe they become a partner in the sin of slaughter, which again I feel is fair. But that is for the owner of the house or decide What I don't agree with at all is the direct association housing society committees make with people who eat non vegetarian with their values or 'sanskariness'. Especially if you are supposed to be a vegetarian by caste and you don't follow it. As they do with being a bachelor, being in the entertainment industry, being a girl who stays out late, someone who smokes etc etc So the whole vegetarian non vegetarian discussion is more prevalent in India that abroad simply because there are so many layers to it. No one asks me about the rice cause it's obvious I don't eat it cause I don't like it. Me being a vegetarian however can be because of one out of multiple reasons.
The point that you mentioned about tourists in Goa cooking their food and eating anywhere on the road, happens when Indians travel to other countries/ other cities too. The "pure vegetarian" community, when they travel they take a cook with them because they can't eat the food there (mostly because they can't distinguish between non veg and veg). Also, I am not blaming any society/community, it's just an observation.
Great podcast guys, listened to it twice just because it was so much to take in and also fun. Just had a thought tho, when Sharul asks Daniel about his stand on people eating dogs, he talks about how he has alway looked at dogs as pet and chicken as food. My question is when you now have learned the hypocritical stand why don't we change now. Like the podcast with Aditi Mittal he talks about how he turned into a feminist after learning about the scene in the industry. Why not learn here too !
I have heard about the spice thing here in hong kong as in if u stay in a shared flat u wont be able to cook indian food and thats why i stay alone but then even i hate the smell of some of their food and i would never consider that as a factor to deny someone the place to stay where they want. So its absolutely a choice of food fascism thing based on smell. Weird.
@sharul Clearly you are unaware of how easily you are getting Top quality content from your Uncle .. Like how amazing it was just to hear bits of his " Tuesday " .. Killed it Sharul
There's a lot of people here who have been commenting that this podcast is not getting the right kind of audience that it is made for... The people who should actually listen to this (and probably learn something) would never do that and so this podcast has become some sort of an echo chamber withing a fairly liberal (left-leaning) educated bourgeoise which basically defeats the whole purpose of such rational podcasts.. So here's what I think: YES IT IS TRUE.. That those who would listen to such podcasts are essentially people like US.. already (intellectually and morally) developed young people and therefore IT IS UPON US TO PERPETUATE OUR MORALITIES IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES.. Today with the advent of RSS we have a shrinking and a niche group of people who still believe that Secularism and Fraternity should prevail in our country and thus, whenever we see anything (remotely) otherwise happening around us (in our homes, schools, colleges, offices and streets), we need to stand together (in solidarity) AGAINST IT.. And try to EDUCATE THOSE WHO WOULD NEVER CONSUME THIS KIND OF CONTENT...It's important to consistently fight against chauvinism, patriarchy, homophobia, Islamophobia, etc at the grassroot level and hence contribute towards a more TOLERANT AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETY.. THE PURPOSE OF THESE PODCASTS IS NOT RESTRICTED TO LIKE AND COMMENT ON THEM, BUT INCORPORATE OUR COMMON VALUES IN OUR MOST MUNDANE ACTIVITIES AND ALWAYS PUT OUR BACK AGAINST THE WALL WHEN WE COME ACROSS ANY KIND OF INJUSTICE. Take for example the RSS (who have been working for decades) which has millions of members toiling every day for Fascism and guess what they have (somewhat) succeeded.
Daniel, I love your podcasts. But I have a humble request. Please sit closer to the mic or fix it in the editing (if possible). The volume of all three speakers is unbalanced and I'm constantly button mashing on volume buttons. Thanks!
Bro Mic level check kar lia karo....sound come properly only when rohan bend forward..... in any given time see the distance between her and mic and him and mic......it effect sound ji
Vegetarianism issue is mostly related to jains..they literally live in ghettos and given it is a huge business class and have capital employed (many developers and builders themselves are jains)...the issues and discrimination isn't necessarily against the Muslims but just their overall apprehension against meat eaters.
Daniel's ''wtf is happening'' face at 1:10:50 is epic...:D. Great topics chosen but felt that the discussions got quite side tracked from them. However, Haryana uncle was a really funny story to hear..:D
