No idea what happened with intro/Outro audio sorry. Love me some Tom Hanks and Meg is growing on me for sure. Make sure you like and subscribe for When Harry Met Sally on Friday!
How far back do you want to go? There's a great little film that inspired You've Got Mail, called Shop Around the Corner (1940), with wonderful performances by Jimmy Stewart and Frank Morgan (who played the Wizard of Oz the previous year).
Actually, yes-You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally ARE the same genre. Both are romantic comedies. Both star Meg Ryan. The only way they could be MORE alike is if your Friday movie was Sleepless in Seatle. That and You've Got Mail are both romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan AND Tom Hanks. Also, all three were written by Nora Ephron (who also directed Sleepless in Seatle and You've Got Mail)
Nora Ephron was a writer and I believe also worked in publishing and each one of these movies have characters who have careers based in the written word. Another similarity.
Those other two movies wish they could hold a candle to When Harry Met Sally. When Harry Met Sally is one of the best films, maybe not of all time, but certainly of its genre. Those lesser two movies are Hallmark movies of the week. I never saw either when they came out, and never felt like I was missing out. I’ve seen When Harry Met Sally dozens and dozens of times, and enjoy it every time. When I finally saw the other two… 🤷🏻♂️ Never watched them again.
Tom and Meg have always had great chemistry. She's cute as a button and he's charming as heck. Their first on-screen pairing, Joe Vs The Volcano, is funny and romantic too. Don't miss Meg in Innerspace, with Dennis Quaid and Martin Short, or French Kiss, with Kevin Kline (from Dave).
18:35 Yes, in my family growing up, we often sang around the piano, and my siblings and I still do this with one another and our own families now. My parents both played, and my mom used to teach piano, and my dad used to write songs for piano. He was a pastor and she was a nursery school teacher. Every Christmas, dad would write a new carol, and he wrote many other types of songs. Now at family gatherings (especially around the holidays) we like to gather around the piano and sing some of dad’s songs together and remember him. 💗🕯
Great reaction to one of the better rom-coms out there. If you're looking for a modern day rom-com that triggers a broader plateau of emotions, consider 'the Big Sick', starring Zoe Kazan, Kumail Nanjiani, Ray Romano and Holly Hunter. No blockbuster names, but the chemistry is there and.. it's 100% based on true events.
HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW MEG RYAN??? Has this guy been living under a rock?? Not to mention the great Jean Stapleton, Greg Kinnear, Steve Zahn and Dave freaking Chappelle!!
I love this movie and watched it at least once a month during the Pandemic. What's funny is that when this movie was made, this was really happening. Small bookstores were being eaten up by evil chain Barnes & Noble. I worked there at the time so we were REALLY insulted by that "I bet none of the people who work there have even read a book" line because most of us were either in college or becoming teachers/librarians or were retired teachers. We literally worked there because we loved books (it certainly wasn't for the money). The huge B&N store that I worked at back in 2000 is still there and it still has a used book department that used to be a computer program/game department and a huge café and children's department and big puffy chairs you could lounge in. But a lot of them are gone and smaller bookstores are popping back up. Majors & Quinn, an old school bookstore near where I live survived that B&N transition and is still surviving the Amazon transition, and still an amazing place to shop.
I love books and reading and libraries it's such a shame that libraries are slowly going away and people don't read as much. Reading can be an incredible escape!❤
Greg Kinnear (Frank, the "what has technology given us?" guy at the beginning) was previously on the channel in Little Miss Sunshine, as Richard, the over-achieving dad.
Great movie. I am just surprise you are seeing today and not in Valentine which I think it is the more romantic season. This movie is a remake of a classic movie with Jimmy Stewart which is called The Shop Around The Corner. Another great movie with Meg Ryan you should see is Innerspace. Other great rom coms are One Bright Day with Michael Piper and George Clooney and As good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.
This film came out when email was still a new thing. When I saw it at the theater, I hadn't really used the internet except at my job, and we didn't really use email so this was all new to me.
My folks used to read to me and my siblings when we were kids. Every night, and usually from old literature. Books like The Secret Garden, the Little House series, or Little Women. All of us are readers to this day, and have a well developed vocabulary as a result. It’s one of my fondest memories. We also sang a lot, although none of us played piano until much later.
The older lady working in the store with Meg Ryan was Jean Stapleton she starred in the tv series All In The Family she played the part of Edith Bunker , Archie Bunkers wife .
This is one of my favorite movies. My husband and I met this way. So I could really relate to that zing of excitement when A message would pop up. this was almost 20 years ago now. We've been together this whole time. And we were already so in love with each other before we even met in person. We would spend 2 or 3 hours every day just typing back and forth, helping each other with college homework. sometimes we talked on the phone. (Back when phone calls were free after 9PM, remember those days? LOL)
Instant watch as soon as I saw you posted it. Movies from this time are so cute and based on good stories and characters, so I'm glad you are reacting to them ❤
This movie is actually a remake of a classic 1940 film called The Shop around the Corner, - hence the title of Meg's bookstore. It starred Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan.
Yes, this older movie is the basis for this movie. Not to give the plot away, but the two lead characters are carrying on an anonymous correspondence by actual mail - you know, you make marks on a piece of paper, put an address and stamp on it, and it has to PHYSICALLY be moved to the other person, for those of you not old enough to have experience that. Both movies are also enemies-to-lovers, too. The original movie also stars Frank Morgan, who played the Wizard of Oz in the 1939 movie.
@@johnnehrich9601 Fun story : before I posted that, I quickly scrolled through the comments, because it drives me crazy when seven hundred people all cluelessly make EXACTLY THE SAME comment! Usually, someone else has already said it, and I can move guiltlessly onto the next video. But this time, I swear on ZuZu's petals, there was no shop around the corner anywhere in Comments. So I typed my info, and the next night checked back. And Mr. Ehrich, I don't know how this is even possible, but it was now swarming with Shops around the Corner. I checked the post times, and many preceded mine. I always thought the multiverse theory was hooey, but I think I accidentally hopped through an Everything, Everywhere all at once Comments section.
Yay, a RomCom!! One of my favorite Meg & Tom movies. Sleepless in Seattle would be a great Holiday movie, When Harry met Sally is definitely a Holiday movie. New Years Eve is a good RomCom.
If you like the Soundtrack to this movie then you'll also love the soundtrack to "When Harry Met Sally" and also "Sleepless in Seattle" (another Hanks/Ryan film people have recommended.
Never seen this one, but I can still do a few trivia tidbits here and there. 1. Released in 1998; directed by Nora Ephron; screenplay by Nora and Delia Ephron (real-life sisters). 2. This is seen as a remake of two 1940s films - "The Shop Around the Corner" from 1940, and "In the Good Old Summertime" from 1949, which was originally inspired by a 1937 Hungarian play, "Parfumerie." 3. Meg Ryan was married to Dennis Quaid (the NOAA scientist father from The Day After Tomorrow) for ten years, 1991-2001. 4. Meg Ryan's full name is Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra, and she grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. 5. The original promotional website for the film stayed up until 2018. Many cited it as an example of overly simplistic web page design. 6. The production company, Donner Productions, was founded by director Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Scrooged, and The Goonies), and his wife, Lauren Shuler Donner. Their breakout film was the movie "Dave," seen on the channel a few weeks ago.
This is such a super cute movie . Meg is adorable and as cute as a button. Oh, and as far as my Starbucks order I love a venti americano with almond milk and stevia :) lol😂
Yes... The Godfather needs to be on your "to-view" list ASAP. LOL Also...Ironically, it goes to show how quickly tech moves...Since "You've got mail" was released; book stores (Barnes & Noble) locations have dwindled too with the advent of audio and ebooks. I still visit book stores though...
The main plot of this movie is based on the Jimmy Stewart classic Shop Around the Corner which was remade with some musical scenes included as the Judy Garland/Van Johnson movie In the Good Old Summertime (despite the name that one has some nice Christmas scenes towards the end.) In the original movie the shop is a small store selling a variety of merchandise. In the second movie it is a music store. The Judy Garland version is the best and I would encourage you to watch it. You've Got Mail, while entertaining and well made, is the weakest version and a twist on the others, trying to take the orginal idea of pen pals not realizing they know each other and modernize it. In both of the other movies our main characters do not have significant others and they actually work together. Both characters are on the same sort of economic level, although the male character is in a supervisorary position. There are less characters in Shop Around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime and the plots are tighter. That said, its worth watching all three to compare and choose your favorite. The Judy Garland version is beautifully filmed and directed by the husband of Judy, Vincente Minnelli, and has a brief appearance by a very young Liza at the very end. It would be so nice if you would explore beyond the more recent movies.
I’m glad you liked this movie it’s one of my favourites. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have made several rom coms together, Sleepless in Seattle, Joe verses the Volcano ( silly but good). I hope you check them out. 😊
You need to watch every single movie Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have been in together because they are fabulous together. My drink of choice is a hot chai latte extra hot almond milk with cinnamon on the bottom
I love this movie up until the 'it feels like my mother has died again' line, then I just get sad. I wish it had a different ending (for her, re: the shop), but it's a very fun movie on the whole, and has shades of those older movies with the fast, fun dialogue and quirky little moments. So glad you are a book-reading advocate! It's an awesome thing to have in your life. :D
I love your Channel. Thank you for watching this and reminding me how much I loved this movie and how it showed my AOL world. No not all NY’ers are mean and only think of themselves lol, please watch the movie French Kiss with Meg and Kevin Klein. You’ll love it. Also, this movie predicted what B&N was doing to the industry at the time. Last, the genre for this & Fridays movie is also RomCom 😍
This one is the third of the Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan rom-com team-ups. The first was "Joe vs. The Volcano", then came "Sleepless In Seattle". Both are very good. I think I liked "Joe" better because it was very quirky and though it did follow the standard rom-com formula, it did it in a really unique way. .
It's been mentioned already, but you really need to watch Shop Around The Corner, which this is a remake of, but set in 1930's. One of my all time favourite films, and was so thankful when it was released on blu ray remastered. You'll love it I promise.
Meg Ryan’s most amazing performance was a movie called Prelude to a Kiss. I don’t want to give anything away about the plot, so I’ll just say it was an incredibly challenging role and she completely nailed it. A very strange and less famous movie, I don’t think anyone has reacted to it yet.
@17:16 the shop that they are in is Zabar's. They have every kind of bagel, smoked fish, olives, and cheeses. It is an amazing place and their sandwiches are huge.
Just a great movie but takes me back to the early days of online chatting... one step removed from the days of actually writing letters .. something about waiting for the reply of logging on and the first thing you hear YOU'VE GOT MAIL ..
Yes Meg Ryan is adorable. She’s what a lot of us wished we looked like back in the day. She has the cutest smile ever. Women used to go to get Meg Ryan haircuts.
Yes, once or twice in the past 20 years when we all (extended family) got together for a holiday celebration we have broken out into song after dinner with someone playing the piano accompaniment.
I'm not usually one for romcoms or holiday movies, but I have such a soft spot for this one! I used to watch it on repeat and still have the VHS in a box somewhere. 😄 I wonder how much it contributed to me becoming a librarian and wanting to work with books. Overboard is my pick for the best romcom ever made. It's hilarious, iconic, and stars real life power couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, who are both talented and possibly the most attractive people in the world.
Oh my..you referred to Meg Ryan as the mom in Top Gun. I don’t know what to say. She truly has gone so far since that 5 minute part. When Harry Met Sally; Courage Under Fire, City of Angels, Sleepless in Seattle, When a Man Lives a Woman, so many!
I’d like to recommend three other Meg Ryan movies…”City of Angels” and “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Another Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie is “Joe vs the Volcano”. I’m really looking forward to your “When Harry Met Sally” reaction. There is one scene you will never forget 😂
I say Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, in Sleepless in Seattle, and in Joe versus the Volcano are all in the same genre as Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. . . (and for that matter, Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping): they are all classic, hit, masterfully well-done romantic comedies, and you truly should see all five of them! Tom Hanks' girlfriend was in Superman Returns with Kevin Spacey, Meg Ryan's boyfriend was in As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson and Sabrina with Harrison Ford. Her older saleswoman was the female lead of All in the Family. His dad starred in Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange, as well as 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda.
Since you asked yes every Christmas, my accomplished Jazz & church pianist Grandmother would play while we sang. After she passed it was many years before I got to do it again at the house of friends.
I can fully understand how you believe what you said at 24:45 into this movie, however, some of us New Yorker's are quite courteous, understanding, and normal. It's just that we have so many people to deal with that we sometimes forget being normal. I worked not too far from that location, and even lived there as a young adult, then I realized what normal really is and focused on being that way all the time. Having worked at becoming an Eagle Scout when I was a boy trying to find my way, and having two caring parents, did help a LOT.
Starbucks Order: Grande (hot), Whole Milk, Penguin (Black & White) mocha, Upside Down. I’m so glad I found your reaction channel. We would watch Sleepless in Seattle and While You Were Sleeping.
Probably in my top 5 RomComs❤. I would definitely forgive him for lying…lol! Tom and Meg are adorable. I think you know Greg Kinnear from Little Miss Sunshine. And Maureen Stapleton was Edith in All in the Family, if you’ve seen that.
The garden is still there and run by the residents nearby. They had the sign stolen twice (because of the movie) so they haven’t replaced it. The DVD had all the locations in the special features. I spent the day visiting many of the locations in a visit. Zavala was so fun.
There is nothing better than a sunny Fall day in NYC walking thru Central Park. I stayed one block up from where Joe's apartment is the last time I visited NYC.
Meg Ryan is wonderful, so glad you're getting to know her! Now...I'm going to beg that you watch another one of her movies that is my absolute favorite! "French Kiss" with Kevin Klein and Timothy Hutton! It's a RomCom set in Paris. Ryan and Klein's chemistry is perfect and the soundtrack is beautiful, including "La Vie En Rose" by Louis Armstrong! Thank you for considering it! ❤
The Fox Books reminds me of when I worked at Borders in... 1999 I think. I had to quit because 2 of my sisters were getting married on the same day a thousand miles away and they wouldn't let me have the weekend off. They said "if you go to that wedding you won't have a job when you come back" so I went to the wedding.
Now you have to watch them in reverse. You've Got Mail (1998) > Sleepless in Seattle (1993) > Joe Versus The Volcano (1990)- all Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks Rom-Com collaborations. Joe Versus The Volcano is an underrated gem and a must-see. Sleepless in Seattle is a classic.
Venti caramel macchiato with two extra shots dropping in for the first time. So glad you’re enjoying this movie, maybe consider Sleepless In Seattle next. Tom and Meg have amazing chemistry and it’s always a nice break from real life to watch them together
20:35 - it's not explained in the movie, only in the book, why it's "going to the mattresses". Italian mafias had rules about warfare. First of all, only men are a target; women and children could stay home and lead normal lives. While the men would find a secret apartment in the city, bare of any furniture usually and all they had were mattresses to sleep on as they planned and carried out attacks. Hence - "going to the mattresses".
You've Got Mail is a remake of a film from the 1940s called The Shop Around the Corner starring James Stewart (one of my favourite actors) and is so worth watching.
I do enjoy this film, even though I must confess that I'm not normally a fan of romance movies. I would say that Tom Hanks is probably my favourite American film actor as he is so versatile. Well, as ever thank you for another entertaining reaction. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving from across the pond.
Thank you. I love that you love this movie cause tjis is very dear to me. It was inspired by a 1940 movie entitled "The Shop Around The Corner". This movie is very dear to me. Please do more Tom Hanks...
I love this movie so much that I spent a day trying to get to as many locations as I could the last time I was visiting from Aus. I managed to find Zabars, the hot dog place, the intersection where they cross each other and the Cafe where they met (which was a gorgeous little hole in the wall cafe and I wish Id had the time to go in and get a coffee)
Always like when someone checks this one out. Sleepless in Seattle seems to get a lot of attention. But, I think these two go together great. It's a cute rom/com.
Never did the sing along around a piano but in college it was not unusual for the guitars to come out and start singing songs. American Pie was always a staple.
Another person in this movie that you should get to know is Dabney Coleman that played Joe's dad. He is a great comedy actor. You can watch him in War Games, 9 to 5, and Short Time.
This was SUCH a fun reaction! As others have stated, the other romcoms featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are both really fun. Meg Ryan really shows off her early acting chops in Joe vs the Volcano, acting as multiple characters within the story. Steve Zahn, the paranoid employee in Meg Ryan's bookshop, is in another fantastic movie with Tom Hanks and Liv Tyler (Arwen from LOTR), about an American garage band that rises to rapid fame, in the 60s. Tom Hanks also directed the film that's both nostalgic and charming and has a boppin' soundtrack.
Fun Fact: You've Got Mail. (my FAVORITE movie) is a remake of the 1940 movie "Shop Around The Corner" with James Stewart. Meg Ryan's store name is a nod to the original movie.❤👍🏾
The Cyber Sex girl, her idea of a perfect date is the 24th August. It's not too warm, not too cold, you just need a light jacket. Do you watch beauty pageants? That's her answer in a beauty pageant.
When i think of his store i basically think barnes and noble which is nice to find recent books with a coffee shop to drink coffee while browsing but hers is nice too for finding classics books with a cup of coffee or hot coca in corner chair with blanket
Since you love books so much, you must know that this movie is based on a book called: "Shop Around the Corner". It's mentioned at the beginning of this movie. Classic and great movie. 😀
My drink of choice is Dr Pepper. Unfortunately, my almost 80 years old kidneys don’t like dark sodas, so it is a rare treat. I grew up in a musical family. My parents were school teachers, and we took month long road trips in the summer. This was before DVDs or iPads and to pass the time, we sang four part harmony, and my folks would quote poetry. I sang in public since I was 9, so, yes we did sit around the piano, and sing! If you like this soundtrack, you will like “Sleepless in Seattle,” which has similar music.
