The Odyssey by Homer is an Ancient Greek story (OK, epic poem) about Odysseus, who gets into all kinds of trouble trying to get home after fighting in the Trojan War. He and his crew have to try to escape from giant cannibals, a Cyclops who thinks humans are tasty, and a no-win trap between a huge ship-sinking whirlpool and a multi-headed monster. At one point, Odysseus even has to travel to the land of the dead.
Aside from being a pillar of Western literature, the Odyssey is a fantastic story full of adventure, mythology, a bit of sex, and violence. Best of all, Odysseus is an intelligent hero who uses his brains to defeat his enemies. One of the ideas you'll find is that being humble and clever beats boasting and brute force every time.
