My name is Jeff Royer. I am Father of Kyle Royer who has taught me how to make knives. In this video, I will be attempting a new damascus pattern that I've never seen done before! I failed the first time, this is my second time which is a success!

Hey I really like that you went for such a unique pattern shape, how about trying it with some thinner stock? or just less of it, because it was so thick it was difficult to do. I think if you do that pattern with a bit less thickness you can do the bends more easily.

@joeelliott4609

I tried doing this a couple years back ( called it "riverrun")... I love forged patterns much more than stock removal patterns.. As you found out the problem is in compressing the accordion shape back on itself and trying to do this an a efficient way as to not allow inclusions from excessive slag build up. Was wondering about making a heavy wall tube with a "plunger" slightly smaller than the ID of the tube.... sliding the accordion shaped damascus into the tube and compress under the press using the plunger... this would keep things fairly in line, cut tubing away and finish welding/compressing under press. I am not a bladesmith at all but a 45 year full time smith with an occasional fascination for damascus as my teacher in the beginning was Darryl Myers
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 4 года назад
Hey Joe Good stuff I don’t have a resolve, I can offer more questions. I like the idea of a tube support. I have considered side rails to be used in the press. If you revisit this before I do, be sure to give me a shout out and let me know how it goes with you 🔥🤪✅ Thanks Joe Dad

That was quite the battle! I'm impressed that you were able to forge-weld the folds back together. Though I'm thinking that if you want to do this again, there must be an easier way. Maybe do one fold at a time? Or put the whole accordion into a custom square tube and press it down from above?
