Well they were trying to modernize the characters.

He overacted a bit and there’s proof of this. He did really bizarre and unorthodox things to his fellow cast mates to stay in character that were really and unnecessary and pretentious as shit. I think the vision they had wasn’t necessarily bad, having a gangster type Joker ripped straight from Miller or Azarello could definitely work but Jared’s acting was unwatchable for me and really tainted the film. Also there was no real reason for him to be in the movie at all, he’s just kinda there. Who knows maybe if we get an Ayer cut we’ll really see what’s what idk.

It's amazing how the writers don't get the character. For those who are fans of Death Note the same thing happened in the Netflix adaptation. Light is a sociopath who doesn't give to damns about his girl and in the opening scene they had him drooling over her. Both the Joker and Light are sociopaths, they use their women, they do not love them.

I think a lot of people loved all of that, which is why in the Snyder Cut that just came out, it's heavily implied that the Joker will save Lois in exchange for Batman saving Harley's life, wasn't that the basis of the truce. So he does seem to love Harley and after seeing the very world-weary future Joker, I think most critics and fans finally understand the younger Joker's whole "gangster" performance here.
