This is still pretty true if you count their interaction in A New Hope where obi wan says “don’t fucking even try killing me bitch” And Vader/Anakin goes “bet”
What hurts me most in this scene is Obi Wan’s admission that he loved Anakin. The Jedi are not meant to let their emotions lead to connection, yet both Anakin and Obi Wan did. Obi Wan knew about Padme and never said a word to the Council. He truly loved Anakin and only wanted him to be happy.
Earlier in the movie when he was talking to Yoda he was saying he couldn’t kill Anakin and referred to him as his “brother. He did that even before this.
@@ohnobro1424 But if you watched the clone wars series like when obi wan lied to Anakin and how Ahsoka left the Jedi council including denying Anakin the rank of master, obi wan knew the council was wrong and did nothing about it especially when he said "I have failed you Anakin, I have failed you".
@@InvestedGmanAhsoka leaving before she reached the rank of Knight is why he couldn't become a master. And Kenobi clearly voted to keep her in the order. They were gonna cut give her the rank of Knight. She just chose not to accept it. Anakin claiming it's unfair makes more sense now sense he knows she was ready. She knows she was ready and even the council knew she was ready but just because she didn't accept it he never became a true master with an incomplete apprentice. Scemantics and literal proof of everything Dooku, Barriss, and Ahsoka were talking about.
Same with "You *were* the chosen one" From Obi Wan's point of view, he broke the prophecy. Everything him and Anakin did and we're supposed to do is null and void.
But imagine the pain he was going through by having his legs getting cut off that had to hurt I felt so bad for him tho wish I could have saved him myself cause I could never let anakin be like that or let him die I just could never do it I loved his character
@@Fade88shut up Man, anakin had sith eyes, that comes from pure hatred, his mind was confusion, regret, sadness, and hesitation while fighting kenobi. It was at this point when his love for him was torn, and he had embraced his anger.
+Shockwave Muncher Hayden is a great actor. It's just george lucas' shitty script which ruined most of the scenes he's in. I personally think in RotS he was pretty flawless but in AoTC he was kinda weird with those creeper faces.
+Shockwave Muncher I liked how after Obi-Wan said that he thought of him as a brother, you see Anakin look up with a sort of regret and understanding but it's cut off when he begins to burn.
@@Bbuthmann217 I'm not talking about those particular writings. As the whole movie is not bad writing. Its the ones that most people point out like one of the conversations between Anakin and Padme in the second film.
0:53 It's the tiny moment after Obi Wan says "I loved you" where Anakin's hatred for Obi Wan dies down just a moment and you can see the regret and anguish in his eyes, right before he catches fire. Lucas is a smart enough filmmaker and trusts his audience enough to not linger on it, but it cuts so incredibly deep. That's what makes this scene for me.
I had that same feeling, but at 0:20. He looks disappointed, like he has a glimpse of knowing the situation is messed up, but he's too far gone and cannot go back.
Nah, you're reaching bro, I'm glad this scene can inspire your imagination, but don't go creating scenarios where there aren't any. It's just your imagination. Lucas's was a stoner who loved hot rod racing. That's all
It is a commentary on the impact of isolation in relation to positive inputs and what role bad influences can have (Obi Wan was purposefully sent away by Palpatine to groom Anakin while preying on his insecurities (wanting to save family)).
i mean this all shit is lucas' imagination so there are no correct or wrong thoughts about this anyone can imagine and that can be their way of true ending@@KMAK88
@@KMAK88 I mean what he's referring to should be accredited to the acting of Hayden and Ewan rather than the writing. They definitely did show a range of emotions in this scene. But yeah, Lucas fans are annoying.
The look on Anakin face before he said "I hate you" you could the sadness in his eyes. The horror of realizing his choice but then was consumed by the hatred.
It is easier for men to fall into their hatred and anger, than it is to face their sadness and regret. Something that I have fallen into for a time myself.
Imagine this scenario fighting obi wan getting your legs cut of close by the lava getting burned everywhere i think his feelings in his eyes was just powerless and having a lot of pain i dont think that he regret his choice on that moment
@@pringleaddict5827 they were great. I went to the theater dressed up as Chewbacca to see this movie in 2005 and everybody else was also dressed up, there was a line around the building. Good times.
I bet it was so surreal being able to watch this in cinemas I can't imagine the reaction of the audience not just in this scene but also when the Jedi are killed and other scenes
"I HATE YOU!" "You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!" If hearing those two lines after each other doesn't crush you every time, you don't have a soul.
Peter Roser The Force Recycled was awful, the duel was just looked like an ice hockey player chasing someone with a medieval sword and MaRey Sue saving the day. It's forced, it's coincidental and predictable like the movie
I think he should've more clearly been the main protagonist. He sees his closest comrade and friend descend into hatred and cruelty as the world as he knows it crumbles around him. Unable to save Anakin, the Jedi Order, or even the the Republic itself, Obi-Wan all but gives up hope, but after discovering that Padme is pregnant with Anakin's children, Obi-Wan finds hope once more, resigning himself to protect and train Luke in memory of the man he considered a brother.
G C I think he portrayed him perfectly fine, I feel like Anakin was meant to be whiny and feel entitled to having a higher rank as a Master, which is a big part of what made Anakin go to the dark side, unlike the ot, the prequels didn’t really follow the heroes vs villains trope to a tee, and focused on the flaws of the characters a lot more, which is probably why people hate Anakin’s portrayal in the prequels. Granted, I believe that Episode 3 is the only one worth revisiting though, but the prequels could have easily been way better than the ot if they got rid of the bs and polished the dialogue a bit more.
@@ABCodeX I think Hayden's performance was extremely good. He's a grey area character - not a golden boy good guy or a despicable bad guy. But an emotionally conflicted young man, which Anakin was meant to be. Anakin needed the rank of Jedi Master to go to the forbidden section of the Jedi library where he thinks he could find methods to save Padme. And knowing that his mom was a slave and died a slave before he could free her also would've destroyed him mentally. I think Anakin's whining was more desperation than anything.
Hayden did fine, he forced to talk about sand and complain aton, not his fault. Plus many of anakin's emotions in episode 2 are ment to draw similarities to luke in episode 5
After obi-wan says "i loved you", it cuts back to Anakin. And you can see, painted on his face, regret and sadness, as he realises just what he's done, and what he's lost. He's lost his brother, his friends in the republic and his former self. In the full scene, he reaches out to obi-wan for help, while not speaking, desperately crying for help. So much told with facial expressions and body language. Lucas was a damn genius.
Ian DiLorenzo Fair enough. I also am still entertained by the film. Maybe not as much as I did when I was a kid (I thought it was amazing back then) but just enough.
Poor Obi-Wan.... He's lost everything in his life.... His master, the woman he loved, his best friend.... Still didn't turn to the dark side.... A true Jedi Master
@@unhandydaddy5117 did he ever tell her he loved her? I can't remember, i only know anakin is the only person kenobi said he loved. I know satine told obi wan that she loved him but i can't remember if kenobi said it back.
@@Danglyparts1 sure most episodes were about ashoka and Anakin but that doesn't mean we didn't spend time with Anakin and obi wan and the episodes we got with both of them or the three of them were great. It doesn't contradict revenge of the Sith in the beginning of that movie they were good friends even tho they fought sometimes like in the show (also there's a time gap between aotc and rots and clone wars is closer to rots). Dave is great at making star wars he isn't perfect some episodes might not be as great but most of them are really good
One of the saddest things about this is as Anakin says these words, you can almost _feel_ the life being taken from him, like he tore his own soul out just to say those words.
I don't think he was great but I do think he and the rest of the cast had to have had a hard time acting against green screen most of the time. That and reading off some of the awful dialogue.
I didn’t even mind the dialogue. I thought everything the prequels did for the story was fine and this scene definitely shows. Keep in mind even the original trilogy had flawed dialogue
The prequal scripts may not have been the best, but the way Anakin yells "I HATE YOU" at 0:37 always hit me so hard. So full of rage and contempt. That line, more than any other, seems to really illustrate just how far he had fallen. All his love for Obi-Wan, at that point, had been wholly replaced with pure hate and disgust. Fucking powerful
Alex W. Controversial opinion; Hayden Christiansen is a good actor that was given a set of awful scripts that played to his weaknesses. The scenes were he acted purely through body language were some of the most impactful in the movies, imo aside from Ewans lines in this vid. Given that he was a young actor given a job in a huge franchise as the main character, he's stated before he was scared to improvise or go off of George's script, and George admits himself he isn't the best dialogue writer. Just a bad set of circumstances for an otherwise good actor.
You are Lee C. Just this scene alone proves just how good Hayden actually is at conveying emotions. I mean, just look at his facial expressions, it's like he's really feeling what his character is going through.
Saddest part of the movie right here. Obi Wan really thought he was the Chosen One. He found out the hard way he isn't. I'm surprised he still had faith in the Light side after that.. I would've been confused after that.
@@lineialquantum Anakin already bore the title Darth Vader when Obi-Wan battled him on Mustafar. So if we're talking about Anakin I don't see how the encounter on Mustafar should be any different than the one on the Death Star.
@@streptococo4735 yeah but if he had killed him the OT wouldn't have happened. And to be honest, I don't think obi-wan ever had the power to kill Anakin even when he became Darth Vader.
@@sirwaterproof3273 Then why make a show that couldn't happen? You cannot think "No no Obi cannot kill him because then Star Wars cannot happen" that makes no sense for Obi-wan, he SHOULD want to kill Anakin, he wanted to kill him since he turned evil, and now that he has a second chance he just lets him go? And the horrible excuse of "Jedis dont kill" Makes literally no sense if you saw ANY other movie or show or anything in Star Wars. Mace Windu willing to kill Palpatine, Yoda as well, Obi-Wan himself wanting to kill Anakin Obi-Wan against Darth Maul etc, killing for Jedi is like a chore, if its done righteously, it is like any other job. The show shouldn't have happened, now Obi-Wan is the direct reason millions died after that.
@@streptococo4735 I think Obi didn't kill him because he realized that in the current state he was in (having just learned that it was Darth who killed Anakin), he could ONLY kill Darth out of revenge for having taken his best friend from him. That's why Obi-wan later tells Reva that by not taking revenge (and destroying her very soul in the process, because that's what revenge/hatred does to you) he has given the other dead younglings peace because they wouldn't have wanted her to destory herself. And the same goes for Anakin and Obi, Obi didn't take revenge because he knew that Anakin wouldn't have wanted that.
@@streptococo4735 bro obi wan went to that fight to kill him. The reason he stopped is because he saw Anakin’s face underneath. Killing a masked machine is easy, but killing your brother who you put in that machine is way different
The reason why it works so well is because it actually has an impact on the storyline while providing an amazing emotional ending. The sequels were trash in that sense. Actually scratch that. The sequels were trash in every sense
the jedi wouldn't allow him to become a master, they basicly excluded him from the council because he was too powerful, he didn't like that and had visions about padme dying, so, he sided with palpatine who manipulated him saying that he would save padme's life, but ironicly that was what ended up killing her. And killing the jedi was actually justified in terms of 'balance to the force' since there where far too many jedi, as shown and there where a lot more jedi than sith, and in episode 6, he finally brought balance to the force and killed palpatine. Then disney ruined it by making 7
Right? It makes no fucking sense that after the sith have been destroyed as said in the prophecy they just come back a few years later doing the exact same thing sidious and vader did.
+bergenheis The Geonosis battle was incredibly good, maybe the best large-scale battle next to Hoth, ending with the dramatic takeoff of the Destroyer ships Obi Wan's duel with Fett > duel with Grievous Jango chasing Obi Wan with Dubstep bombs was great Dooku's reasoning to tempt Obi Wan to join him made some sense, more sense than Anakin's rushed temptation to join Palpatine Anakin's turn to the Dark Side made more sense in Clones than anything in Sith, although it's a culmination of the two movies I forgot about the stupid Yoda fight. Other than Anakin vs Obi Wan, and "the romance," I prefer Clones over Sith
In my personal opinion, Ewan McGregor holds the best acting performance I have seen in any Star Wars movie to date. Edit: Forgot to include Ian McDairmid
This is probably my favorite star wars film, it was heart-wrenching to see how fast Anakin's life had fallen apart and overall I prefer the complete seriousness this movie brings rather than the comedic parts of all the other movies.
Obi-Wan is a true Jedi. He lost his master. The woman he loved, and his padawan and not once he thought of going to the dark side. He was a true Jedi till the very end.
"I HATE YOUUU!!!!! Don't forget to let my son have that lightsaber when he is old enough." "You were my brother Anakin! I loved you! Oh, and sure thing mate."
MetalPatrick93 not in that sense. in the clone wars anakin and obi wan's friendship becomes more believable and more realistic, making this fight in rots more emotional.
Yeah, but I mean it's suffering since the writing in Clone Wars is a million times better than anything Lucas came up with for the prequel films, lmao.
Episode 3 will always be *my favorite* + this scene has been one of my favorite Star Wars scenes overall. I just watched Episode 6 of Kenobi and holy shit… I didn’t think that scene between Anakin/Vader and Obi-Wan could be on the same level, if not, be even greater than this scene (from Ep. 3). Thank you Ewan McGregor AND Hayden Christensen for coming back to play the Star Wars fans’ favorite characters, for delivering another outstanding scene with each other, and for making me cry again 🥲
@@wattosoldier Actually, Obi-Wan did have a romantic history with Satine of Kalevala and claimed he would have left the Jedi for her had she asked. Unfortunately she was ultimately killed by Darth Maul. Obi-Wan can't catch a break
“What hurts the most, is being so close & having so much to say, and watching you walk away. And not seeing that loving you If what I was trying to do.”
Pray for Emperor Disney and Darth Kathleen not knowing where Obi Wan is. 😂 I bet they will eventually have Vader showing up in the Obi-Wan's series. It will have a young Luke. These two are too much linked for Disney not to drag Vader into it.
Ain't gonna happen guys, Star Wars is done son. As soon as a well known franchise infuses with pc culture, kiss it goodbye. We have 6 movies, the clone wars, a possible layout of Lucas's vision for the sequel trilogy, etc. leave it all with that.
This scene truly portrayed the death of both Anakin and Obi-Wan. Such a tragedy how the strongest of bonds tore two men apart and that destroyed both of them... Anakin had betrayed his best friend and brother by fighting him. And the qualities that made Obi-Wan Obi-Wan - the endurance, the optimism, the sense of hopefulness - were gone. Think about it when Uncle Owen said in Episode IV: "I don't think he exists anymore; he died around the same time as your father." When Anakin died, so did Obi-Wan... :'(
1. Yes, it means that your views had changed radically, meaning your personality might or will be affected - just as Anakin's was, Sith Lords and Jedi have completely different mindsets and worldviews. 2. No, but what you do in order to save her really do show that Anakin's mind became evil. Betraying, killing your brethren and the younglings is pretty evil to me. 3. Well, it's really not Obi-Wan's fault if you've been behaving like a creep for most of your relationship. And you've been consciously breaking your holy vows to your Order and lying to her. And then, of course, all his talk of power that he needs and wants, which prove that is was not just for love that he became a Sith.
The qualities of modern film making mean that the whole prequel series could never be done again. Taking risks and chances on scripts that yes were at the time incredibly hard to digest as an audience but over time have become absolute master pieces. Lucas’s ability to rhyme through his work is just in matched. Simply Amazing pieces of modern cinema.
People often say "I hate you" was a bad choice of lines in this scene... But if you think about it, "I hate you" is a perfectly justified choice of words in this scene.
Lolster Well yeah this was Vader at his creation. Consumed by hate and pain. 15 years later Vader was more of a demon than a person. Just like how the Luke we see at the end of Return is a totally different person than the Luke we see at the beginning of New Hope The Prequels are bad movies though
+Patrick Callow anakin did betray, but it wasnt entirely his fault, sidious and the f***ing council just manipulated him, and anakin didnt even lie to his friends at all
Eddie 666 exactly. Whether or not you liked the prequels (which I loved) you have to admit that this scene and the last part of this movie are legendary
Ewan McGregor acted so well in this scene that I really had tears in my eyes. He reflected so well that there was no trace of that sweet boy who lived with his mother, that he should have won an Oscar in this scene.
When you see the film for first time, you feel sad When you have read comics, watched the Clone Wars TV show and followed Anakin and Obi Wan's friendship from the beginning, and then you see again this scene, you definitely want to cry
The acting in this scene was absolutely incredible, the emotion in Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor's voices literally shook me to my core, I just recently got into StarWars and this scene will forever be my favorite.
@@paladinheadquarters7776 I feel like the "I hate you!" Better signifies his fall to dark side, it's as Yoda said, "fear is the path to the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate, leads to suffering. Anakin telling Obi Wan that he hated him essentially solidifies his fall to the Darkside, and after the battle on Mustafar, he was suffering and alone without Padme, essentially confirming Yoda's original statement. That's just my opinion though, I kill you would probably be more impactful in terms of the dramatic nature of the scene.
Welcome, young padawan. If I may give suggestion, watch the tv series as well, such as The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian. They're amazing and add much to the lore. Also, read the novel and comic series. There's a lot of them and they're awesome 😉
