🇲🇽 CULIACÁN, SINALOA, Mexico - Welcome! In this 2021 Mexico Travel video, we’re once again in northern Mexico! I recently spent a week in Culiacán, filming 2 main travel videos and a 10 minute walking tour. Many people told me not to visit Culiacán because of the issues with the Sinaloa cartel and that generally, it wasn’t a ‘typical’ destination. When do I do typical?
Is Culiacán safe? Is Culiacán dangerous? Is Mexico safe? All questions regularly asked. But, take a moment to forget all that petrified immigrant garbage and consider Culiacán as just another city in Mexico. A novel concept, right? The people are BRILLIANT, the food (comida mexicana! sinaloa sushi!) is AMAZING, and the THINGS TO DO IN CULIACÁN are ASTOUNDING. By listening to mainstream media, you’re missing out on a spectacular Mexico destination!

If you're thinking about moving to Mexico or becoming one of the increasing number of expats in Mexico, your choices aren't limited to popular areas like Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. You might even be looking for off the beaten track Mexico. You might ask the questions, "Is Mexico Safe?" or, "Is Mexico dangerous. Sinaloa is a state that, granted, you'll need to be able to speak Spanish in, but the city and state has so much to offer, just as much as those other places!

Yes, historic centers are not what the whole city is or lives daily. Historic centres are "gentriffied" but that's cool in sake of preservation. So many beautiful and historic buildings have been lost to neglect.

Controversial Chihuahua videos? I can't wait. Mexican Normality/Abnormality??.. Mhh.. I think I kind of know what you are referring to.. Durango, Mazatlán, Culiacan, and Chihuahua are all Spanish Colonial cities, founded during the "New Spain " period of Mexico.. Torreón, I'm not so sure (maybe Lerdo or Gomez Palacio). Of those 4 cities mentioned, in my opinion, Durango has retained a larger "inventory" of buildings and casonas and other constructions.. Chihuahua was very similar to Durango until they destroyed a lot of the old houses and buildings in the central area. In the case of Durango (vs. Chihuahua), not only being far away from Mexico City but also being farther away from the U.S. border was a factor in retaining much more of the physical city as well as the customs of the region. In the case of Chihuahua (and this can be applied to all cities in Mexico) people seemed to consider the outskirts of the city as not beeing entirely part of the city, or at least the "nice part" of the city.. People have trained themselves to visually ignore/block any acknowledgement of those very massive and informal and REAL (because they exist and they are there) areas that are not aesthetically approved. As you mentioned, who doesn't like beautiful ("polished") San Miguel.. But the true Mexican nature (because Mexico is not Spain and it doesn't exist in 1700 or 1800 but in the present) is the Mexico that encompasses the whole.. Certain places don't hide that. A perfect example is Torreón, or Cd. Juarez.. People consider them ugly, just as many people in the North consider the desert "ugly".. And to this day, ugly in Mexico is synonymous with less Spanish, less affluent, less "polished". The North is "Rugged".. It is real. People live there,.. They live day to day.. Simple lives. Modern lives. The North is not Central Mexico, and is is almost another country compared to the Southeast. I personally love Northern/Northwest Mexico.. I am from there. I love it for what it is. It's quieter. It's rowdier. I love the intense light. I love the lack of humidity (in the case of Chihuahua and Durango). I love the people. The simple food (and there is great food, including great flour tortillas, but sadly getting lost with time. The people in Chihuahua will tell you that you must go see Periferico de la Juventud (the new and highly developed area of town) because that is what a lot of people consider "nice". It is mostly not. Mexicans (within Mexico) are almost incapable of seeing the beauty of the country without outside (European/American) validation.. It's great to see you venture into and enjoy real Mexico.

At the least they point to the heart. It's important for cities not to forget their hearts. It's a gradation between past and present, but I believe that most cities in the United States have forgotten their hearts, and memory of the heart might, I think, affect immensely transformed cities around the world. Tokyo area? Wow. I suspect that there has been more violence done to the heart of cities in the United States because the enrapturing of success. It's far more than racism. It's what the wealth leads to. So easy for the comparatively rich to forget. Forget what? In part what the centros historicos show. Poor Latin America. I pray that they hold on to liking being around people.

In fact, we were in Culiacan for my birthday in 2020 and the first two cases of Covid were found in Mexico. Go figure, they were in Culiacan and they were in quarantine at our hotel. It didn't stop us from having a great Leap Year birthday party. We were just there last weekend and filmed a video for our channel which should come out this week. In addition to highlighting the food, my buddy's rock and roll club, El Back, and the up and coming craft beer scene, I asked random people if they loved Culiacan and then why? The responses were inspiring and uplifting. So yes, the word needs to get out about Culiacan!

Sinaloa is known for having delicious food and yes, it is very different cuisine from the rest of the country. Most people only know food from Oaxaca or central Mexico because that’s where they go and are afraid to venture out and visit Sinaloa because it has a “bad reputation”. As ever, great observations! From the flour tortilla to how colonial areas feel fake in some places. I believe that in many cities if it wasn’t for those colonial areas, it’d be hard to know you are in Mexico. Especially in the north where most cities were planned and built more with an American inspiration than Mexico’s. Maybe that’s why they are over emphasised? By the way, flour tortillas make sense in a few dishes: burritos, home-made quesadillas, sincronizadas and machaca. For everything else (tacos included) corn please!!!!

We exist! Is it easier to affirm that in Mexico? I fired off a comment that will never be read to a minister who gave a list of what evangelists should remember and I suggested that touching someone and assuring them that they exist might be a good first step for many. God became one of us according the the pretty churches I'm glad you show. What other religion does that? It's real. I see a correlation in your approach. Whatever you believe. I can't touch you online and would that matter? Feeling the affirmation of existence differs from searching for whether it exists or what negations of ourselves we create. We DREAD hitting that imaginary line where flour tortillas suddenly become scarce-to-none! LOL! Aside from the taste, we prefer flour over corn because they are more pliable, making tacos somewhat less messy to eat. Enjoy the city of Chihuahua - we absolutely LOVE it there! If you visit the Pancho Villa Museum and enjoy it, then a visit to Hidalgo del Parral, where he was assassinated, is recommended. Pancho Villa aside, Parral is an absolutely LOVELY town and is worth a visit for a few days!

Oh no, you poor wee mite. Rest yourself and take it easy for a bit when you get back to Torreon. As for what you said about "colonial centres masking what Mexican cities are really like", we've found this to be true of Pueblo Magicos too. You don't have to walk too far from the prettied-up central area before you get into the reality of how folk live...and that is not what most folk want to see. In many cases people don't have the time or inclination to venture beyond what is being "sold" to them. People have romanticised views of known "touristy" places, this is true of every country.

Sinaloa, durango chihuahua and the like formed what used to be Nueva Viscaya, and was conquered by Nuño de Guzman. The natives here were nomadic, unlike the established natives in the south with a complex society, hence the sporadic settlements/ cities. But in el fuerte, you have fortresses, architecture, buildings dating to the 16th century. Sinaloa also has a strong American presence. Los mochis was founded and designed by American Albert K. Owen, an adherent of Albert Kimsey Owen, an utopian socialist. There were American colonies there.

You've eaten most of the regional cuisine of Mexico, but I've never seen any mixiotes. I just found them in Cuernavaca and I'm afraid it's going to become a staple food during my time here. Today, she had 3 types made up, so I got one of each. carnido, pollo, res. Each is "lovely" in its own way and all are soooooo tender. I believe it's more of a central Mexico dish with possibly Aztec roots, so you're unlikely to find any in Chihuahua. I'll continue my gastronomic search and apprise you of any new developments.

Yes you are right northern Mexico feels like another country. Corn Tortillas are difficult to get in the north , I feel tex-mex food is a variation of northern mexican food. You know there are a lot more cultural similarities with the southern USA than with the rest of Mexico, even in the spanish more people use english words than in the rest of the country. Its a shame you couldn ´t come back to Monterrey this trip because is the third largest city and the only one that hasn´t make it on your cool channel ! Another thing is that I hate when people say for example that burritos aren´t mexican; of course they are they were invented in Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua.

I lived in culiacan for 8 years, and I mostly had corn tortillas. However, the flour tortillas seem more popular in ahome, Los mochis, etc. In la Sierra, passing Badiraguato, hand made corn tortillas are a staple in home, not flour. Plus in culiacan there are tortillerias in every corner lol
@altoclef6197
@altoclef6197 3 года назад
Interesting take, and very much one I agree with. It's hard to encapsulate the "soul", so to speak, of a place so little-defined and unsung like Culiacan. How to romanticize it? Tourism pamphlets don't begin to cover it, it's not the setting of noteworthy literature or major films, and it's not by any means glamorous. Still, there's a definite beauty to the complex social fabric of so many people simply existing together, going about their daily lives. A fascinating culture that forms with its inhabitants, with a tightness that I consider signature to most Mexican cities. There's a story begging to be told there.

What! Flour tortillas are great and delicious, but you have to take them with Northern Mexican type of food, which has more European influence, and they have to be fresh made. I grew up eating them at home made by my mom. You don't mix southern food with flour tortillas.

I am glad that you are willing and able to share your perspectives on some of the the less travelled areas of Mexico! However, if I want to go to a sketchy neigbourhood (with garbage on the street, cracked sidewalks and electrical wires hanging from buildings), I can (sadly) do so in my own city. I hate to be contrary - but I enjoy vacationing in the "polished turd" areas. I respect that the residents have taken pride in their community, want to preserve the colonial architecture and present their best face to the world (plus, I think they get some $ help to pay for paint from UNESCO and local tourism boards). On another note, while I am being contrary - don't slag Oaxaca! I vaguely recall that you had a bad experience there that I think tainted your perception. It is a world apart from San Miguel and Tulum (don't forget Ajijic) - where expats go to create enclaves that involve minimal engagement with Mexican culture. Extranjeros in Oaxaca, for the most part, are there to experience and celebrate the local cultures. Oaxaca is also lucky to have many young Mexicans who are there to learn about and contribute to the culture and cuisine. We witnessed many celebrations, parades and posadas in Oaxaca - they were not staged for tourists (in fact we stumbled on a few where we were the only foreigners in sight). All the music, dance and performance (and fireworks) we saw was the result of locals celebrating life. And the region surrounding Oaxaca is unbelievably rich with cultural diversity. I have to say that the Sunday mercado in Tlacolula was one of the most interesting experiences I have had anywhere in Mexico (sharing a collectivo to get there with a guy who was transporting a mannequin added to the fun). We did not see or hear any other English speakers in Tlacolula (in fact, there were many indigenous speakers). Oaxaca has loads of pre-Hispanic history (Monte Alban, Mitla), amazing food, mezcal, gorgeous mountain weather and was the home of Mexico's first indigenous president (Juarez). What's not to like?
