Really enjoy this. This has been something I’ve struggled with for years as I’m one that has the right hip sway back, then on the down swing, move towards the ball. I’ve been told to actually try and stay closed longer to help with my swing. I wonder if getting left sooner without moving towards the ball would be better

thank you Eric for this easy explanation. i am returning to golf and struggling turning the hips. i have noticed my game is pretty inconsistent because of this. i am dealing with a cam lession on the left hip that is also limiting my hips movement. is there a golf swing that can be reliable with limited hip movement? or in your opinion, if you rotate properly the hips should not hurt and the swing just flows
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
There are ways to work around the hip rotation----yes....I would need to see your swing to offer YOU specific advice so I can see exactly what you can/cannot do, other parts of your swing, etc Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and we can build you a pattern that works. One option with less hip turn is to move the ball back, slide the hips more and play a bigger draw/hook pattern like a Tom Lehman pattern

I love this Eric, thanks so much. Please riddle me this though. Why can I get this so right and put it into practice at the driving range but when I tee off in one of the weekly comps I fall back to hooks, thins, fats, tops etc. it’s like I go into frozen mode and my hips seize up and I’m all arms and wrists and there is nothing I can do to break the curse. Is there such a thing as chronic panic attacks for golfers?

I would add a key part of this motion is not allowing the center of your pelvis to move closer to the ball. Moving closer to the ball causes all kinds of accomodations (OTT, early extension) because you run out of room for your arms to reach the ball. I would make this the initial, foundational critical part of the movement. Eric addresses this, as someone who has struggled with this for 30 years, it has been an "ah hah" moment.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
100%! Tried to cover that in the second part with the hips staying inside the "wall" inside the line over the toe line
@g4yrut
@g4yrut Год назад
Its actually less about running out of room, and more about the change in spine angle. During transition, neither your pelvis OR trail hip should get closer to the ball, as both will change your spine angle and in turn shift your hand path, forcing you to swing OTT or to stand up (depending where your hands are at the time of the spinal shift). The hips should never open until the hands have reached the slot, and the lateral shift (which is actually travelling towards the lead heel) has moved our center of mass back to the ball, shifted our spine angle to allow us to swing underneath, as well as created a “post” position in our lead leg to rotate around.
@johnraudabaugh726
@johnraudabaugh726 Год назад
This might be what I referred to in my comment that I just posted. So you could do this too early with the hips if that hands and arms haven’t dropped into the slot yet?
@g4yrut
@g4yrut Год назад
@@johnraudabaugh726 Yes, the hips operation as such: Shift-Rotate-Shift-Rotate. As we perform the downswing, the hips shifting forward brings our Center of mass back to the ball, tilts our spine angle, and creates a post in our left leg, which we then rotate around. If your hands aren’t in the slot when we rotate around that post, that would be early extension, where the player is forced to then stand up and manipulate the swing path. Think of it this way. We are shifting our hips to create the post, if our hands aren’t in the slot, and then we open the hips to rotate around the post, then what are we actually rotating for? The hands aren’t there, so there’s nothing for us to rotate. Edit: Something important to note. Everything in our body is connected. The feet pull the hips, the hips pull shoulders, the shoulders pull the arms and hands. So if you find that your hands aren’t in the slot before your hips open, you’ve lost connection somewhere in your swing (likely the backswing), and that needs to be addressed first.

If you replace 'hip rotation' with 'hip lean' it would make this clearer for me. My 'hip rotation' gives me an over the top swing. With the 'hip lean', starting at the top of my swing, my hips follow my swing after impact. I use the 'Weight Forward, Straight Arms, Elbows In, and Hip Lean as my only swing thoughts and the 'Hip Lean' has increase my enjoyment of the game.

Eric, I really do like your lessons, your drills work for me. That part from 8:30 onwards is totally me. I transition OK, but hardly rotate by the time I reach the ball (backswing no issue) with very little side bend (my head ends up max half an inch lower compared to address, extending a little too early losing my spine angle) in to out. Question on the being 'more agressive' part: how to do that if one is (very) trail side dominant? My right foot is always largely on the ground by the time I reach the ball (slow-mo mobile phone really showed that): Is it an idea to push a little with the right foot to rotate more? or is the foot getting up always supposed to be a passive reaction to the hips turning? Should I rather practice harder on right side bend? (that does trigger the feeling of my left hip going up)

Interesting technique to promote hip rotation, and more importantly lower body moving out and away from the clubhead path, but you did not mention what happens when hip rotation is not done. If you don't rotate hips well before clubhead impact, then your arms are restricted in the swing and follow through causing your clubhead path to be outside-in because the arms are restricted by the shoulders being in the wrong place at impact. Please advise about this, and if I am not correct. If you are consistently hitting shots to the left or slicing, it may be because you are not rotating your hips out of the way well before clubhead-ball impact, and therefore causing your clubhead path to be outside-in across your body due to restricted arms
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Hello! Lack of hip rotation would not cause the path the go more out to in.....actually the opposite. Rotation....of any body segment....moves the path more out to in. What moves the path more in to out (in terms of body rotation) is side bend and extension.

Something I am working on at the time and will try your drill for sure. However I injured my left foot during practice in the studio with my pro. I see the same risk for your left foot, it is tilted to the left. You seem to be okay with that but this will not go well for all players. My suggestion is that peoples who have to work on their hip rotation could put the left foot a little more facing out. This makes the rotation more easy and prevents injury.

This would normally be matched up with a lead wrist flex right?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
This is just about getting a "normal" amount of hip rotation....which you could pair with any wrist angles. The type of grip will dictate the wrist angles much more....more on that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S776LyvM6Pc.html&pp=ygUYRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdyaXN0IGdyaXAg ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Cg2O8atmYY.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdyaXN0IGdyaXAgIHJlbGVhc2U%3D

@@CogornoGolf but wouldn't the hip turn automatically open the clubface? am i interpreting it correctly?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Yes......but how you CLOSE the face can be from multiple sources I hear what you're saying and you aren't wrong...it can be closed with wrist flex, grip or arm rotation. Details on how to close the face here: www.youtube.com/watch? v=fCW9W_lGQtM&t=138s&pp=ygUhRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHNxdWFyZSB0aGUgY2x1YiBmYWNl But keep in mind what Im showing here is how to get to NORMAL amount of hip rotation......this isn't "a lot" of hip rotation which requires anything different....just normal hip rotation and normal squaring of face

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Definitely Keep in mind this is for someone who needs MORE hip rotation......so that wouldn't be of concern. If you are on the other end of the spectrum as a test I would put an alignment rod through the belt loops equal length sticking out on both sides.....make sure the arms/club get in front of the back parts of stick in downswing

Always a good idea to stretch! That being said...all of the motions prescribed are within normal range and plane of motion for all of the joints, so I wouldn't be concerned about injury risk here. Doing these motions the best YOU can is the key👍

Another instructor says do the absolute opposite. Don’t push the right hip forward but instead pull the left hip back. Slight difference in feel and timing. He says the arms will tend to get stuck in the downswing if you push. What do you think?

In order to properly perform the hip bump, I think it’s important to understand why. 1. During the backswing our hips naturally shift away from the target. If we simply unwound from that position, we would be hitting well behind the ball. 2. More importantly is spine angle. At the top of the backswing, our spine is relatively vertical, which is why so many amateurs are swinging OTT. Your spine angle won’t allow you to do anything else. But, as the hips shift forward, the spine angle tilts into a position which allows us to swing underneath. 3. The hip shift creates our left leg post. Which, like in basketball, gives us a stable position to simply rotate around. The post position should feel like our left hip socket is literally stacked on top of our femur, which is stacked on top of our ankle. But what’s interesting, we can actually preset these conditions! If at setup, we simply shift our hips towards the target and our left heel (while keeping our sternum still), what do you notice? We’ve created the post position AND shifted our spine angle before the swing even begins. Which means, as we transition through our downswing, suddenly our hips only need to shift roughly 2 inches (depending on the amount of preset bump), compared to roughly 12 inches without presetting. Just a little tip, and food for thought for all those struggling with hip shifting.

Because the pelvis is designed for stability and weight bearing and is supported by some of the strongest ligaments in the body, the pelvis is capable of very limited amounts of rotation on its own .In order for the pelvis to move in a fashion that most would call “rotation “, the pelvis is dependent on hip movement to change the position of each respective hip socket . The below quote by @ pt ax of Tommy Fleetwood below “ push his left hip back “ is consistent with this basic anatomy . An older video which Eric did with Mike Maklaska describes a similar motion. The important concept for golfers to learn is to NOT try to rotate the pelvis , since rotation beyond a small amount is anatomically impossible , but to move the left hip socket away from the target line during the downswing

Hi Eric. Love your videos. How about this... Just tell your student to have your"chest to the sky on your finish". That's it. No drill. Just a simple swing thought. Chest to the sky. You do that and everything you described, will follow. It's impossible to have your "chest to the sky"without having your hips square, knees kissing etc... Just my five cents worth
