First ride on the Sport Classic. I bought the lowest mileage Sport Classic in the country and this are my first impressions. Don't forget to like, comment and share. Thanks for watching. Follow me on Instagram @dorian_vlogs
I am 6'3" and done trips of 350 miles + in a day. One trick I did is flip the clip on handle bars to the opposite side and upside down. It allowed me to stretch out and take pressure off the wrist and flatten out. Sounds like you need to do the pipe and emu. Lol wish I invested in the full fairing back in 2007 love the look.
I bought my 1000S in 2008- right new from the local Ducati Store, without any testride. It was love right from the first look! But when I rode home after 30km my neck, back, wrists- everything hurt. Just for some seconds I thought about bringing the bike back to the dealer... But luckily I decided to keep it. I startet a tour to Italy the next day. After about 2000km my body got in perfekt harmony with the bike! Today I really love everything of it! Its unique classic design, its aircooled engine, and the sound of the open termis. So happy with it!
You are not alone in having love for these motorcycles. They are uncomfortable and it takes some getting used to but as you know it's worth it. They get all the attention and they're very special machines.
G'day mate I know exactly what you are feeling and experiencing I had a RGS 1000 Laverda and it was the same a real cow around town but open it up on the twists of the hills it came into its own. At speeds unbelievable they are a true Italian sports bikes and I love them my favourite is the MV Auguster however I'm 64 now and suffer a lot of medical problems so I can't ride anymore. You will come to love once you've ridden it a few times but they are different and that's what I personally love them thank you for commenting on it and filming it, kind regards John Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
I bet that RGS was a beauty. I love this Sport Classic. It's a head turner with such character. Thanks for watching all the way from Australia! Stay safe. 👍
I've had my 07 since 08 and yes, this thing isn't for everybody. You have to deserve it and build the muscles to sustain riding it. I have been riding Harleys since the early 90s but this thing is my jam now! Never looking back, ah ah!
Enjoy your content- I have the GT1K and when it comes to comfort, it's definitely the king. Not as pretty as the other SCs but the easiest all day riding I've ever done on a sport standard.
I had a 900SSD in 1982-3 had that same wrist/thumb strain issue.. you have to sweep the clipons back quite a bit to angle the bars back.. you sure learn to use your knees for support.. but great habit for track riding on other bikes you get a really light grip on the bars for good front end feel
I have the same one but without the bullet fairing...i personally find to *drive* it awesome and very exact...almost like a scalpel in a world of chainsaws... To *ride* however is a totally different story all together
I have one, with a 2.5" Riser to reduce the weight on the hands and wrists. Beautiful bike with great handling and Torque! I have done 1,400 Klms in 3 days on it. It has Ohlin Forks and Rear Shocks, so can go hard and be safe doing it. At over 100 KPH, I can snake it on the Gravel Shoulder off the Bitumen Road with ease. Can cut Sick on a Gravel road and it just eats it up!!!
…great bike but uncomfortable! i have the gt1000 and just bought a mint 996! gotta love the ducatis - make sure you hold onto the sport classic becoming very collectable
Sport bikes like this are designed for canyon riding or race tracks. You apparently live in flatland. The way you ride this kind of bike is you grip the tank with your knees and hold your body up with your back with your arms slightly bent so that there is very little pressure on your hands. You can also lean on the tank a little bit to take the load off your hands. It's definitely a committed riding position that makes sense when you are hauling ass in the canyons, but is tiring when you just ride around on straight roads. You can see why harleys are so popular in the midwest, as there is little need to turn there.
I come from a mountain/canyon town. I grew up in the twists and turns. Raced crotch rockets. I'm familiar with how to ride these and yes, you're right. 😉
Dude, you’ll get used it. I’ve had an ‘08 Sport 1000 since new and have put a heap of miles on it. Short trips, long trips (and I’m in Australia, so I mean looong trips) done them all and quite comfortably. Definitely easier on the hands and wrists into the wind, but the little bit of pain elsewhere is worth it😂. And I know they only made the Sport 1000 for three years, ‘06 to ‘08, but not sure about the Sport 1000S
I'm good now. I finally figured it out. Let it do what it wants to do and just hold on. Jk but the discomfort during riding is gone. I did 250 miles a couple of weeks ago with zero issues.
@@dorian_vlogs I actually prefer the sportbike position because I have lower lumbar disc issues. On a standard or ADV bike, unless I'm standing, my weight + my gear and the bumps from the road just transfer directly into my lower spine and after a ride I feel like I need to go to the chiro. But leaning forward, I take all that weight off. In fact, if my lower back is acting up, first thing I do after I get home is sit on my bike and the relief is instant, I can feel my spine decompress immediately.
I own 2 Sport Classics. One is a 2006 Paul Smart and the other is a 2007 BiPosto. Having spend my first 35 yeaqrs in Houston, I can say that bike is not in it's element. Take it out to the Hill County around Kerville, Northwst of San Antoinio, The bike will fit like a glove and everything will make sense as far as the riding position.
You know, I'm surprised with the success BMW has had with the R Nine T and Kawasaki with the Z900RS and of course the Thruxton that Ducati hasn't come back out with Sport Classic.
Ducati won't do it. It'll take from how special the sc is. I can tell you from owning the Thruxton 1200 and the Kawasaki RS Cafe, the SC feels decades old compared to those two. It gets the most attention but feels dated.
Beauty, but I missed the part as to why you think it failed. Some of them were a little overly committed for a street bike, that's for sure. And early 2ks were kinda the race replica era. Everyone was buying race bikes to ride wheelies down the interstate. Air cooled repli racers without the specs, weren't in big demand. One reason the Duc Classics got a black eye was the fuel tanks. Whatever plastic their supplier was using at the time was not compatible with the ethanol in American gas. It caused the fuel tanks to deform causing other problems. As I recall, Duc wouldn't recall the tanks and made it difficult to get a new one without one proving a deformation/problem existed. Probably still a good idea to run marine (ethanol free) gas in those bikes.
Thanks for the beauty compliments. It was lack of comfort that caused it to not do well. Even race motorcycles were easier on the wrists than this one. The warping tanks were just another issue they had. Bad press from motorcycle journalists ruined the bike's chances. They complained of wrist and back discomfort when they got off of the bike and that did it. I'd still prefer this over almost every other motorcycle. 😉 The marine gas comment is interesting. Going to have to look into this. Makes perfect sense.
My cousin was watching wash my bike a while back. He’s always about that tire shine. Says you need to armorold the tires they need to look darker. I said dude never add tire shine to bike tires. He looked at me like I’m crazy. Still wants tire shine on the bike. Bike looks clean.
Better ride the twistys , i have a Paul smart here in France and enjoy pushing the suspension and work the Frame on the back roads where the bikes happiest Cheers ,ian
Well, it's been just over a year. How's it for you now? I'm looking at one just like it (minus the full faring) here in California. What's the status of yours?
I love it even more now. I've found my comfortable spot on it and can ride it for hours with no problem. I've done a couple of basically free mods, just adjustments to make it more comfortable and it's perfect now. No issues. EVERYWHERE I go, it stops everyone in their tracks and it's a conversation point. It's awesome.
I own a Sport 1000 S for about 10 years now and yes the bike isn't the most comfortable but I've done rides of over 450km. TIP: remove the spacer pin between the upper triple tree and the handlebars and raise the handlebars against the triple tree. I isn't much but you'll notice the difference.
@@dorian_vlogs you removed the pins to adjust the levers angle. Try to remove those spacers and raise your handlebars and you'll notice some difference. I'm a shorty (1m70) and it worked for me. Friends of mine have done the same and all noticed a slight improvement.
Ducati does not care if the bike is comfy or not !! What they care is that it must have that look that these bikes r intended for !! And thats passsion !! Very Italian !! Most beautiful bikes they r !!! Adore the looks and sound of these 1000"s but there is an ultimate ducati also known as the Mh 900 e hope u know that as well !!!😍😍
Would love to have one in my garage. You were saying about the hight of the rider but you went of topic. Are you saying that the bike might be suited to the taller rider? At 6 ft how did it fit you? Thanks 🤗
Yes sorry, I do that sometimes. The taller the better, 6'+ I think is ideal and I'm just there and it's borderline uncomfortable. Part of the problem is the clutch and front brake position I think. I did something very simple to make it better and it definitely helped. I filmed the modification if you're interested and already rode it and it's definitely better. 👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRtYvHdetYo.html
I bought it not long ago. It has been about 13 years since it came out. It is hard to imagine how much it will cost to get this classic motorcycle in China, and it has exceeded the longest use of motorcycles in China ( Means it will not be authorized to go on the road).but i love it
@@dorian_vlogs We call the Provisions on the Standards for Compulsory Retirement of Motor Vehicles. In short motocycle will not be legally on the road for more than 13 years
Thinking of buying a sport classic 1000. How has it been maintenance wise. Have you had any issues or learned any things you hate about it after owning it longer?
No issues whatsoever. My only issue is if you're not 6" or taller, this bike is not for you. The dynamics of it simply won't be in your favor. The distance between the tank and the handlebars is long and is better for a taller rider. The maintain is just like any other motorcycle. Don't believe the "ducati maintenance" hype. Oils, fluids etc. Just like anything else. RU-vid and online groups can guide you thru maintaining and servicing it if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. The brembo brakes require a good/more experienced rider due to the lack of ABS. They've locked up on me once or twice causing me to almost lose control but that's on me. Now I'm more familiar with it and can predict brake feel a bit better. Comfort is the main issue but the attention you get is worth it to me. Hope this helps.
If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, here's what I can tell you: In 13 years and 45k miles, I average $1k/year for routine maint, tires, desmo service, etc. It goes in 3 year cycles, 2 cheap years and then a kick in the pants with the 7,500 mile service. In all that time I've had one flat tire and a voltage regulator failure that put me on a flatbed, but otherwise, it's an air cooled, 2 valve, analog Ducati. Enjoy!
This bike looks absolutely stunning. Must've been ahead of it's time for it to fail. I'm shocked nobody really talks about em these days. If the comfort was the issue I'm sure they could've tried the higher up handle bar type clip ons like on the hayabusa and ninja 250s to make it a little more upright, then if anyone wants realllll clip ons they can put em on. But based on the looks this would be the only Ducati I'd be in the market for.
This and the MH900 from around the same years are very sought after bikes. Everywhere I take it, it gets all the attention. It's an awesome bike and along with the other mods I've done to make it more comfortable, it solves the issue. Comfort and style were the issue and the reason they didn't do well. Now with this new trend of retro bikes, they've shot up in value. Can't get a not so well taken care of one for less than $15k 🇺🇲.
@@dragontheseballs3838 for sure. MH900 and Paul Smart sport classic 1000 editions just sold for right around $40k each. They're show stoppers for sure.
There was a small run of 1000S models in black. One popped up for sale here in Germany but I couldn't get to it during lockdown. I got an original monoposto however and I really like it.
@@dorian_vlogs I love it, though. She is fun to ride once you get going, and I get a lot of older people asking me what year it is. It blows their mind when I say 2008 lol
@Minimus Max that's hilarious. The exact thing happens to me. It's always the year thing. I have a couple of other bikes but the sport classic easily and by far gets all the attention.
@@dorian_vlogs for sure, yep. It must be the red color and the fairings! Hey question since I have you here: do you use a battery tender or maintainer on your bike? I use a ducati branded one and it doesn't seem to keep a charge in my battery.
You are correct it's very uncomfortable with the low bars, tortures the wrist any distance. I have the dry clutch Sport 1000 they also came with those low bars, I was so pissed riding my bike. Then I had my upper triple clamp machined so I can mount some Razoma standard bars for a more upright position, Completely changed the bike, It handled better, I could ride it all day, It was fun to ride again, To bad you can't switch out the bars on yours or the Paul Smart, Totally transformed the bike. The Motor on these are fun it's a open road bike.
Sounds like you fixed the problem with yours. I don't have the space with the fairing but my bike doesn't really get used due to the fact that I ride my Thruxton more often. So when I do ride it, I can tolerate it a bit more. I removed all 4 pins from the clip ons and I was able to raise them about 4-5mm and it helped. Made a significant difference.
Thanks. Failed because it didn't sell the way it should've due to bad press from a bike reported, saying it was uncomfortable. Then tron came out, and sales skyrocketed, but it was too late. Damage had been done. Fairing was available to a very limited number of bikes.
Makes sense. I don't have the heart to drill into the fairing. I found a simpler way that helps. 👇👇👇 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRtYvHdetYo.html
Here’s how I fixed the riding position in my 2007, which I bought new then. Well, here’s how I made it less bad. (And also, they offered red 1000S bikes in all years the 1000S was in production.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zknqoY4OqEs.html
I'm old enough to remember when brand-new tires had a preservative coating on them, you had to be very careful for the first few miles, but only a complete idiot puts tire shine on a motorcycle which is why it specifically instructs people to not do that on the bottle.
His response was "I do it on my dirt bike all the time, I didn't even think about it".. all this as I'm busted up and bleeding. Needless to say I wanted to punch the guy but instead I got a significant discount on the motorcycle.
@@dorian_vlogs oh brother!,you wonder how these people get by in life, glad you got a mighty discount,I used to run 3" of chain slack and "low" tire pressures on my dirt bike but you shouldn't need to be an engineer to know this is a bad idea on a road bike!
