problem is its all conveyor belt and rolled around massive factories and the human side of checking these things are probably given 5 seconds or less to look at the board for errors then the check to see it working is probably as quick as switch on see logo switch off. Also Phil would be cool to see what the board coatings can withstand heat wise on a hotplate maybe.

I wonder if it could have made it under there if the customer suddenly moved the console or shook it for some reason. It also could have fell onto thick carpeting which may not do damage if the fall was not high up. I also wonder if taking it on a plane would do that as well due to how well we all know those bags are treated and what forces are applied to them in a plane.

@@shanearnold1999 It's probably some gallium amalgam. They'd be batshit insane to put mercury in it given its status as HAZMAT. (I'm sure Microsoft would have jumped all over the mercury warning that would have to be printed on the box in that case.) Amalgams that are made with mostly gallium are fairly standard when you're going for a liquid metal heat transfer on ICs. The metal's melting point is about 30C and will melt in your hands. (It's not toxic, though I wouldn't recommend trying to eat.) So basically just by being on and doing anything, the processor will heat it to a liquid state at idle. It transfers heat extremely well, much better than thermal pastes, however a side effect of that is that since it's a metal, it's also extremely conductive as well. I'm kind of surprised bridging that many connections in this case didn't end up frying something else on the chipset in the process. Whoever owned this particular console probably had it standing upright and over time it began to seep under the tape. Meaning that the thing had probably been progressively migrating downwards from gravity every time the system was booted up, until eventually it reached the bottom of the gap and slowly started leaking out. Meaning this is straight up an engineering failure. The immediate way to prevent this that the average joe can do would be... To just lie the thing down instead of having it stand up. Cod3r's solution is what they should have done though to protect those caps around it. Why they just used tape is anyone's guess. (It was probably cheaper than potting the surrounding caps.)

It apparently was a fake in order to make fun of the situaton. Nonetheless it seems to be a real issue and it would be wise to display the PS5 in a horizontal position when possible in order to help its lifespan.

Is there a URL for the fake spill guy in Spain? I can't imagine that Sony didn't do a ton of stress testing on their PS5 before producing 30+ million systems. I also think this is more of customers either mistreating their consoles (I.E. dropping), or trying to open their system for whatever reason, and breaking the seal around the liquid metal. I would also think that if this were an issue with the PS5 sitting vertically then Sony would have known about it months, if not years, ago, and would have the very least change the box art to show the PS5 sitting horizontally. Anyway, I'm not worried if it is at all true and everyone's PS5s start bleeding metal, expect a free replacement. They would have a class action lawsuit on their hands of they didn't address their manufacturing defects.

Well it is designed to be fine vertically, but the problem comes in with people moving it. Moving it normally or playing it should be no problem, but if you move it any time relatively close to playing it, you're asking for trouble with the metal being heated and the motion making it potentially run under that damn sticker

@@DracoSafarius @Draco Safarius No, it's not fine vertically. I am keep saying that vertically the liquid metal will go down because of....... GRAVITY!!! I modded my PS5 and guess what. The liquid metal had already left the socket and that's just because I kept the console on vertically when I first bought it and not more that one month. The upper part was not fully covered because of that. I had to use heat resistant polish just like in this video for protection. I used copper plates and thermal paste on the VRAM and some other chips. I covered the MOSFET with the most expensive thermal pads on the market. And I ordered and potentiometer for the fan that will always make the fan run at +50% of what the PS5 requires, and can be boosted to 100% from a button when ever I want and for how long I want. Anyway, horizontally is the best position for the PS5.

Check RU-vid today and you'll see some titles like "PS5 design flaw found" and you'll see that everyone is talking TODAY about the liquid metal dripping in vertical position. :)))

Glad to see that you got another PS5 fixed up and working again. I'm wondering if the table or cabinet it may have been on was jostled or bumped into. That could maybe explain the liquid metal moving to places it didn't belong without any external damage. I can imagine some roughhousing going on and then "oops, someone bumped into things". And yeah, Sony does need to use some better protection if they're going to continue with using liquid metal.

I will say probably no. My ps5 was upright for 2 years and then i decided to lay it down and now after 1 year spot working. Send it for repair and they say the metal liquid was leaking what cause damage in the chip.

sometimes it runs without any crashes for hours, sometimes it crahes immediately after turnung on... the curious think is, thats ps5 games run mostly without any crashes but ps4 games produces always crashes...i have here an ps5 cfi-1016a disk version, it randomely crashes and produces system fault ce-108262-9 i tried rebuild database and reinstall firmware in safe mode, but this not helps furthermore opened it and reapplied new liuid metal, this also does not help... can you give me a hint ??

In that case it can be a number of causes to be honest. You can take it apart and check for liquid metal leaking or try a replacement power supply but other than that if you don't have any experience with fault finding and micro soldering I recommend taking it to a repair tech. I just got exactly same problem with my PS. Power just went off while playing and it wont start anymore more than 2 seconds. Good thing it has still guarantee left and is now sent to PS for repair, but wondering that if I had this similar reason for why power went off.

it dosent matter at all this is only related if your ps5 has be unscreed and pried open, you need specific tools for that because it literally is impossible to make it go threw unless you messed with it, his title is clickbait cause its not sonys fault people had there ps5s repaired and it changed it a bit.

I got an uneasy feeling as soon as I found out they were using liquid metal as the TIM. And when more than 1 youtuber tried replacing it with regular AS5 and similar compounds and the thing overheated in 5 minutes,m those uneasy feelings became alarm bells. For a system to be so close to the edge that a 5C-ish increase will cause it to overheat (even faster with the 2 new models with smaller heatsinks), its a recipe for failures. I run my PS5s flat, but given the issues I've had with LM on PCs, even keeping the ps5 flat might not be long-term stable. I detest sony, their consumer hostile behaviour, and their dreadful hardware designs.

Many people have left them vertical for years at a time, something odd happened to this one. I would think someone tried to replace the liquid metal, but he said he was sure he was the first to crack it open. Northridge had a video showing what can happen when someone tried to replace the thermal paste on their GPU with liquid metal, looked similar to this, like someone threw a liquid metal grenade inside it.

Liquid metal is a conductive but stays consistent to heat better than paste over time. Thermal paste loses it cooling properties, less conducting(semi/non) and becomes hardened gradually. PS5 puts out a lot heat even tho they revised there cooling ducts/heat sink into 3 model types (CFI-10xxx/11xxx//12xxx). Can’t mix the 2 together on boards required.

correct if I'm wrong but even with the console in horizontal, if the liquid metal is not properly sealed, it will leak no matter what.. of course, in vertical it's easier and probably will spill more, but it only means you'll get the problem earlier..

Its a video microscope, not an optical. We have one at work, the hand/eye coordination required to look at the screen while working with your hands in front of you is insane. I do a lot of micro soldering and my work wants me to take pics of everything, but I cannot get used to the video microscope, so I just focus my cell camera through the microscope eyepiece. The video microscope has its benefits, like being able to record and stream, but as far as actually doing something under it I just cant seem to work that one out. I've had a few PS5's come in with odd issues. All mint condition. Sadly you are right, all of us doing repairs on these consoles will need to check under that cover now if there's strange issues but everything appears to be fine.

These consoles were clearly dropped or damaged in some way. This is extremely rare and unlikely to happen with normal use regardless of console orientation..

For those skeptical of liquid metal cooling, this is the unfortunate cons of using it being realized. But then again, this was manhandled and other similar PS5s didn't have that kind of issue. But Sony should start making design changes revolving around more rugged usage scenarios so shorts from liquid metal like this don't happen easily.

a dumb non pc gamer perhap in me ..but wouldnt it make more sense to add a lip tiny ammount to the cpu to hold the liquid metal in place while it dries ? or to isolate the cpu to prevent spill over ?

@@dragoonduneman4161 LM doesn't dry. Sony has a foam pad that surrounds the cpu to prevent it from leaking onto the mainboard, but they only use tape to protect the SMDs on the cpu.

I have a PS5, where I repaired the HDMI connector. Shows no Picture and Pulsates Blue. I will check for liquid metal shorts on monday. :) Thanks for your Repair Videos! Keep Up.

@@XevilangleX Not to me BUT I'm fully aware about applying too much solder lead on the solder pads can cause a short/bridge between two solder pads. FYI, *I don't have a PS5 (it's too expensive for me or anyone else in Southeast Asia to afford it) or any electronics that uses liquid metal* as its cooling paste hence that is why I was surprised to see that problem cause the console not to be turned on at all. If you were surprised by that comment, forgive me. I'm not a professional when it comes to repairing electronics. So like everyone else, I'm just watching all the electronic repair videos to gain some knowledge.

My PS5 which I purchased brand new 15months ago and put it in upright position since the beginning now stopped working, similar symptoms when I pressed the power button. It could be different cause though, but I wish I would've seen this so at least I would've taken some precaution by laying it horizontally... far out!!!
