@marysimon I mixed things up, that one in Gainesville, I know. The concert I was referring to is entitled 2003 USA Tour. Do you know where to find this for sale, or know where they played on that venue? Sorry for the confusion Mary. I can't believe that I graduated from the U of Florida in Gainesville, but never got to see them! I did see Jefferson Starship there though when I graduated in '81. Thank you and take care.
It was always great to see Tom live, especially outdoors at night. He knew how to work the crowd and at any time during any song he could hold his mic, point it to the crowd and we all took over singing vocals for him. I truly believe he let us sing to give his voice some breaks so he could play longer. Tom loved and respected us as much as we still love and respect him.
Same here, I don't think the death of any musician (apart from maybe Bowie) affected me so much, I just felt, and still feel, such a connection to his music each and every day... He lives on in our hearts and our ability to show others just how special he was! As the great man once said... You and I, will meet again... I really hope this is true
If you want to know how a rock band should sound, look no further than this. The groove, the timing, the way the tones and parts are layered, the way they create space in the song for each other, the dynamics from the quiet instrumental breakdown all the way to full kickass mode in the last chorus. An absolute clinic, one of the best bands ever, and such a loss. RIP Mr. Petty, you are sorely missed.
Have you read Conversations with Tom Petty by Paul Zollo, who is a musicologist? So much attention paid to the W.Zanes bio but this was ALLLLL about the music. To be treasured. Also was surprised and delighted by David Byrne's What Music Means. And yes, Tom Petty who died of a surfeit of responsibility to his audience, unique in that respect is indeed sorely missed. I was sorry that his widow Dana has been getting flack for the posthumous release of American Treasure; with Benmont Tench, they collected from the archives tracks that meant something to them, out of love. A creepy journalist had Dana in tears; absolute bully. No place for that sort of behaviour. Tx for post; we could go on and on ...
@@evelynbaron2004 Tom left his estate equally to Dana and his 2 daughters. She should have gotten their approval before doing anything. That was his wish. I love Tom and the fact that he loved his daughters equally. He was a good man. Truly missed.
I so miss Mr. Tom Petty, a true American Rock Star, as a guitar player myself, he and the Heartbreakers, Mike, made 3 chords sound like much more. The turnaround of 3 chords with a break, so simple, so elegant, so damn good. What a talent he is, heaven holds one of our best. Tom, you may be gone from us but your music will live forever, Thank You so much.
I'm also a guitar player, and I want to know why Tom Petty barely played on this tune, and when he did the volume was almost down all the way. There was a third guitar player way over on the right that was clearly handling the rhythm, while the UF guy played the lead. The rhythm player was almost completely left out of the video. Any ideas? Inquiring minds want to know!
The one departed rock and roller I just simply regret not ever seeing live in concert. 🤯🤬There will never be another Tom Petty. Thanks for posting these tremendous performances that I never went to see.
Mike Campbell ladies and gentlemen! Never overplays and when he does play it’s always a part that I would be happy to have come up with if I were called to play on that particular session. The KING of catchy, tasteful, and melodic guitar playing.
Genuine. Sincere. Down-to-earth. Gifted. American. Tom Petty you always kicked ass! Thank YOU. Thank YOU! THANK YOU for forty years of great Rock N Roll! I'm gonna miss 'ya. (greatly)
Tom was the nicest man I ever met..So devoted to his fans. He was a musical genius. The best, Millions will miss him, so sad, Tom has passed on. We LOVE YOU TOM.♥♥♥
You're like I am. I'm just going from Tom Petty concert to Tom Petty concert and enjoying the hell out of it. And listening to the performance level in each as they got stronger and more assured. And then they just get out there to kick ass. God rest his soul. He certainly has helped my soul...
Woke up with a TP tune in my head, "You move me, honey, you make it all right", etc. Love it. Sorry to see you go, my friend but your music is always in my head, to some degree or other. RIP Tom.
He creates one of the sweetest breaks in any rock song, with the quiet passage in the middle-and then the perfect, effortless climax as the band crashes back in to rescue every boy who ever stood, invisible, at the high school dance...
There were us invisible girls at the high school dance too. Wish we coulda found each other back then. And so we graduated, then off we went into that Great Wide Open. Few years, decades go by....we finally shed the braces, the glasses, grew into our bodies, found something we loved doing-and were getting paid for it! We made a road trip back to the hometown-I dunno, maybe some family thing/function. And all those girls who never saw you, and all those boys who never saw us, well, they never went anywhere except precipitous marriages, irretrievably broken by 25, 26, couple kids later, old, cynical long before their time: Girls look hard, used up, the guys look lost, broken, mean. And you, sir were spotted in town now smokin’ hawt and a great catch to all those girls who never saw you then but honey, they saw you now. Oh, did. they. ever..... And so do I. You truly are and always were a great guy, now a man and I hope every last “invisible guy at the high school dance” found a genuinely loving, sincere partner, the one you always deserved.
I remember being 13, just learning guitar and listening to Into the Great Wide Open (my first CD) and thinking, who is this guitar player, I want to be able to play like him :)
Randy Hogue Totally man...never plays out of line, just what sounds perfect for the song...but that's not to take away from his chops! The guy has serious skills
Every time I think I have a favorite Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song, I remember another I like. These guys have so many classics. I love watching them perform. They look so joyful and into the moment.
I first came to Tom Petty in the late seventies, and he and the Heartbreakers were a fresh breath of kickass, melody-forward bar band rock in an era of overboard stadium rock...still one of the GOAT.
Tom has this grace...effortless....in sync with everything....his best shows flowed through the audience and back over the band. Mike Campbell is brilliant.
Yes. Such sweet pleasure at the time we all need it the most. I am saddened by his death. I am a chronic pain patient. He was in a lot of pain and he was not able to get the proper medical treatment. He was viewed as a drug seeker and he had no choice but to turn to the streets. And he had no idea that what he was getting was laced with fentanyl. I am just thankful that he is not here to witness the Civil Unrest and suffering that is in our future. That would have really hurt him to his core. There will never be another TOM PETTY!
Had seeing Tom and the band on my bucket list. One of the last items. Finally got to see Tom and the band in Montreal on what would be the final tour. Magnificent night of musicians at their peak. RIP Tom and thank you for the music.
Something that's not mentioned very often is, Tom put together one helluva band... and he conducted it perfectly! Gotta give him high fives on that one!!!!!
Not just my favorite Petty song but, in my admittedly biased opinion, best song ever.....it does that much for me. Makes me smile, makes me move and, for a short time, makes me 18 again. Thanks, Tom!!!
Mark Deats I gave Tom Petty my right arm! I have the broken heart guitar tatooed on my forearm in RED!!! Script around it, Thanks for the music Tom! I love it!
Gainesville born & raised, I was at this show in 2006; His last concert in G'ville. Even sat 4th row! I've watched the songs from this show MANY times over. I never get tired of them, and they bring back irreplaceable moments. Godspeed, Tommy!! Sparks in Daytona
Tom Petty Legend I saw several times they do not make them like that anymore. Nobody ever has revived rock and roll throughout the years! Yeah all he did right was live his life like a normal person. And it will be forever until you see them on the other side? Sure do miss the king and truly the pure rock and roll band not to mention the bluesy feel the music put out? TP put out the real s*** all the time. Right now I miss him much Much respect. Bobby
I totally agree. I've been fortunate in both the quality and quantity of music I've seen. There's a fine line between it being"effortless" and " phoning it in" . I don't think they had a quarter, if you know what I mean. Shit. Have you ever seen Irma Thomas? She sings with this downright ease and grace, like falling out of bed. At the same time though, she is totally listening to the band. I think Tom and Mike have that. I also thought Howie Epstein was underrated. I never saw a bad Heartbreakers gig.
So - just found out Tommy died tonight- and just started watching some concert hits here - that I didn't get to see live..Just was comforting and classic and awesome!!!!
Nothing like a Petty concert, The best musicians jamming to leave you just plain WOWED OUT !!! You get 100% plus overtime w Tom at the Helm, Badly missed, Awesomenessness at its BEST !!!
Tom Petty is the baddest rocker EVER.....Ì WILL LUV HIM 4EVER.....I FIRST SAW HIM IN OCT 81 and will 4EVER remember how grateful he was at the way the audience reacted in Jax fl. His smile said it all. They had made the BIG TIME...AMF HE WAS SO GRATEFUL.......
One of the best concerts i ever went to was my daughter’s first... I know Tom is up there singing with her. I’m at ☮️ even though I lost them both a few years ago. 👼🏻💜💘😇
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
@@bazwookie yes and Tom lived for his fans, in his last show before his death he had a broken hip, was taken so many pain killers, as well....to this day I cry, Tom was a gem of a man..I spent a few hours talking with him, back in 1990..Very humble, very intelligent, and very sincere..I miss him so much.
We will not see the likes of this again in this lifetime. Consummate American musicianship on display here. This is what professional musicians sound like after working together for 40 years. Steve Ferrone is a marvel and his timing is incredible but I still miss Stan for the incredible groove and chemistry he brought to the Heartbreakers and to Tom in particular. I think of Tom Petty often and what a truly unique and real person he was in every sense - no bullshit - just pure love for the music in the highest regard. RIP good sir. Not sure I’ll ever get over the loss. I’m forever thankful for RU-vid for the chance to visit these moments of greatness in time.
This is just one of the many songs that this band just showed how great they were. So glad I had the chance to see them on their 40th anniversary tour...they did not disappoint.
I LOVE this band! Always have always will! They wreck me honey, they break me in two! Still great after all these years! Old rockers are the best! ♥ Love Mike Campbell on that guitar ♥♥♥
The new's last night of your passing "wrecked me" and all who loved you and your music. Go's to show ya that life is short and in some case's not fair. Thanks for the music. God bless you and your family.......R.I.P.
I miss you, Tom Petty. I was lucky enough to attend a few concerts. The last time I saw you was surrounded by the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. You stopped singing and had spot lights on two people in the crowd that you noticed fighting. Your kind words of "come on, let's have peace... and love" instantly quieted down, or embarrassed them through all of our eyes on them. We all came away from the concert thinking if you were not already a fan of Tom Petty you would be now after watching this gentle man play great rock and roll. A great musician and person.
I think this may have been one of Tom‘s favorite songs! He certainly loves performing this and it appears to me that everybody is at the top of their form! It’s a joy to watch and a wonderful feeling comes through watching folks perform something that they certainly love! This is a fabulous video - and thank you so much!
Saw Tom and the guys the night they debut on the midnight special in '78 ..they were with me from then until now . I have vinyl , 8 track , cassette , CD and digital . Losing Tom is like losing family for a lot of us . He was with me for 39 years ...way more than half my life. Koolest guy ever ..I still think he got the hat thing from Leon Russel cause he was first signed to Leons label and knew Leon well but is just a theory . I do know that Tom kept hope alive for many of us on many levels . I will ramble on no further . Thank you Tom and the Heart breakers ...You shocked the world .
This is a GREAT Song. A Rocker!!! Love it. Great version this one as well, Like to drive listening to this and others of course. R.I.P. Tom Petty. Sorely Missed!!!
Saw these guys back in 1978 Carowinds Palladium SC/NC Border! Wow 16 at the time. I was completely blown away by this band. Have been a fan every since! By the way they encored 5 times. It was simply amazing.
Great individual talents that form a terrific band...they really know how to deliver a rock 'n roll song. Nothing's ever overdone with this bunch...always just the right touch.
Kick ass. I started at UF a few months after Full Moon Fever was released. The singles from that album were on heavy rotation my first year up there. Eventually saw the band play live at Music Midtown in the mid-2000s.
@@MrSTOUT73 He is doing well. Saw FM at the Forum a few months ago. Also saw the original Dirty Knobs with Mike, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone, Jason SInay, and a fabulous keyboard player whose name escapes me. Missed Benmont. But they sounded fantastic! (Both FM & the DKs.) Cannot wait for the Knobs' upcoming album and tour!
Everytime I watch this video of this song, I fall in love with live perforance all over again and want to start up another band again. The dynamics, the delicacy and power they show makes me want to play again. The audience are like cobras to a snakecharmer.
The greatest Tom Petty song from one of the top rock song writers and bands of all time . Every time I hear this song I get chills all the way down my spine. Their concerts were beyond awesome !
