One day my two teenage boys were driving with their mother. She likes pop and more current music and she was scanning through the channels when both boys said, "That's Tom Petty, go back." I can die knowing I did one thing right in raising my boys.
My husband and I would play this song, every Friday night before we went out to our favorite beach bar. He died this week. The day after, I was standing in line at the Target pharmacy, waiting to pick up a prescription. This song came on. I don't remember ever hearing music in Target before. I think this was his way of contacting me. We were married 58 years.
It is possible for sure....There was a connection of some kind going on there. I'm sorry you lost your husband. 58 years!! You are luckier than most but take that and 50 cents and it still won't get ya a cup of coffee right?
Since the first time I heard it and ever since!!! I'm 70 the end of this mo. and listen to Sir Tom whenever I listen to any music, which is almost daily!
Awesome! First concert my husband & I took our sons to was Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. They cherish that memory & so do we! Keep blasting your music!
This is possibly one of the GREATEST guitar solos ever played in a live concert! Mike Campbell simply shreds that guitar solo, amazing artistry! Tom Petty was one of the great ones, RIP.
Oh yeah......this and Mark Knopflers' solo on Telegraph Road live (around 1987) along with David Gilmours' Comfortably Numb solo live at Pompeii I can listen to daily and never tire of hearing. Campbell, Knopfler and Gilmour at the absolute peaks of their respective careers.
Yesss. I remember the first time I drove to Manhattan from Boston and heard this when I was approaching the city and could see all the tall buildings at night. Fitting song
Yes it is a very good driving song and a good song to play along to with drums!!!! Makes ya want to go fast ❤ with caution of course 😂 We all miss you Tom and will see you in heaven 🙏 You can play for us there ✌️
Lucky people in that crowd. I miss Tom Pettys music. The full moon fever album is excellent. RIP Tom. What a amazing artist. 👏 ❤ and his band the heartbreakers. ❤
This concert was the best I’ve ever seen the band perform especially the song about being King. That night he and the band were the Kings in all of music .
Gainsvilles own Tom Petty! Its clear that Ole Tom loved Rock & Roll and playing for his fans. He,ll be sorely missed. We folks in Fla miss him extremely!! And a Great Dude!!!! RIP Tom P.❤❤❤😢
A band is only good as it sounds live in concert. This is my absolute favorite performance. I always cry at the end because I know how his final story ends. A part of the world died when Tom Petty drew his last breath. RIP you beautiful man. You went out on top.
He passed away from heart disease by medicating himself because he would not take time off to have his knee surgically replaced. A disservice to his fans, his family and his little granddaughter.
My dad loved Tom Petty. He died a few years ago. One of the roughest years of my life by far. Love you dad, and thanks for influencing my taste of music! ❤❤
Benmont (Benjamin Montgomery) Tench has been w Petty since the beginning. Very soft spoken gentleman who turns into a beast on the keyboard. If you go back into the catalog, he’s a big part of the magic on every song. Don’t Do Me Like That sounds like they wrote it to put him out front. Whole band is in top form on this one. We miss you, Mr. Petty.
Benmont Tench is a great keyboard player ! I hope you've heard him sing The Old Man Down The Road ( John Fogerty song ) on Italian . It was on a videotape they released in 1989. So was the song called I'm Stupid .
Sometimes I seem to forget just how great Tom Petty was. This concert reminds me very quickly just how great he was. One of the best. RIP Tom you brought a lot of beauty into this world. I was lucky enough to see him 3 times. When he did this concert in Gainesville my wife was undergoing a bone marrow transplant at Shands in Gainesville and unfortunately we were so caught up in her that I didn't even realize he was playing. It was only until a few years later when I saw this on you tube that I figured out what I had missed. Still kick myself in the ass over that one. My wife she's still kicking and is even more pissed than me that we missed this while only a few blocks away.
The band was "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers", but Mike Campbell made that song come alive...a song where the lead guitarist earns his money. I'll bet now that Tom is gone, that song means more to Mike, because he helped Tom run down his dream. RIP Tom, Thanks for the memories!
We miss you, Tom. You knew how to rock and roll like few can- it's impossible not to start tapping your foot, playing fake drums, singing... you make people happy. love, earth
Just did Leeton to Goulburn (They're Australian towns and I live near G'burn) with Tom all the way. I'm still running down that dream. This whole concert.......no cop was gonna stop me!
I listen 2 him 5 or 6 timeS a day. Super fan of hiS. I love the wordS in hiS muSiC!!! HelpS me!!! Great Singer & itS nice 2 . I can't get go a day without hiS muSiC &the wordS. Love u Tom petty
Michael Campbell is just about perfect on every Petty song... One of the best lead guitarists ever, because he played for the song, not for his own ego. His guitar was never about showing off... just filling in all the blanks in beautifully written songs with full color!
Petty always very clear in his interviews of the importance of his partnership with Mike Campbell to his work. Even when Petty did solo recordings, he generally had Mike with him.
Been there..copper's running us down...no no..out ran them many times..Jason Australia..twin turbo Nissan motor sport....300k passing raders on highway... faster than twin porsche turbo..they're still finishing dongnuts....every night...
Yeah, this song is made for a fast driving car. (Even better if it's a brand new one and this is the first CD/Selection ever played in that brand new car!)
My wife and I saw TPHB 7 times. Seven of the best evenings of our life together. She passed away last year. Watching these videos and remembering gives me great comfort.
March 2024 - Tom's famous line, in between a memory and a dream - that is where he always takes me - Tom and I were just about the same age - so I am an old lady now - but my spirit is still 25 and he is just so - so - so the MAN Love ya Tom
Tom Petty one of the great ones. He always made it look so effortlessly when he played. I listened to him in my teens and I am now in my late 60s. Amazing talent RIP Mr. Tom Petty. Gone to soon but never forgotten ❤️
Ditto! I am 66. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of my all time favorites. I saw them 4 times live, and we used to play a few of his songs at gigs. Tom is sorely missed. RIP!
Great song and one of the greatest rock guitar solos driven hard by one of the most in pocket drummers out there, Steve Ferone. Never get tired of listening to this!
I'm 68 this year and Petty was my last big rock show. Campbell ripped this solo out and brought the house down in Vancouver in 2017 and nothing was ever the same again. 🌠
I really love this man. I remember when he first had a hit way back and I knew this guy is amazing. My condolences to all his family and friends. Just so you all know we loved him so much.
I can remember driving past the exact spot in Melbourne in 1990 when I first heard it on the radio and pulled over to the side of the road to listen. Bought the tape for my Ute the next day…RIP Legend
I used this song for my son's High School Football team's "Running Highlights Reel", and I got grief for it - 13 years ago. Now as the boys and parents are older guess what!? EPIC i'm told. RU-vid stripped it of course, but I still have it on my hard drive and will post to VenMo this year. It stands the test of time and will do so 50 years from now!!! Petty running down a heavenly dream. Mike Campbell!!! Props!!!
Tom Petty was one of the greatest performers of all time. He is one of just a few musicians whose live concert music sounded just as good, if not better than his recorded studio music. And Mike Campbell is awesome !!!
Mike Campbell killed it! I like how he looks at his band mates after his solo, kinda like, “ok boys, put a bow on it, I’m good”. That was one of the most incredible solos ever. I’ve got it on “repeat” in my truck for my ride to and from work. Put a bow on it!
my husband had to get used to my eclectic taste in music, he has like a really limited amount of music that he likes , I like all, so when it came to rock he was not for it and I broke him with dream on and now this one he likes it I can tell because he doesn't tell me to lower it or change it and I blast it and do the air guitar on my way to work😆😆😆
I think the opening riff is one of the most perfect ones ever. The way the first couple of seconds tells you the story of the whole song is perfection. Maybe not the best song ever, but damn that riff is sick.
AWESOME TOM-YOU WERE THE ULTIMATE BEST ROCKER ! ME OW WEE JUST MARVELOUS FOR US CATS!!!!! MEOW WOW WOW !!!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US.........LOVE YOU!
Why do you say that about Mike? Just because he is not a household name like Clapton, Page or Hendrix? Mike is not underrated at all. He is an amazing guitarist. Anyone can hear that.
A C M to say a guitarist is underrated is actually a compliment, there are many in this category. Mike is one of them and he’s fantastic (a guitar player myself) His work is amazing the way he works this solo into this song-just perfect 👌
I mean what more can anyone say about this once in a lifetime Dude? He loved his fans, worked hard to give them a thrill even though he was in severe pain from Joint issues. I saw him limp off stage the last show I saw. This man was Incomparable! Man!! We sorely miss this Dude. And I don't cry easily!!!
But these live on forever! Being at a live show is an amazing experience but I’m so thankful RU-vid exists. I’m would have never been able to see my favorite players “live”.
I would say unknown. Band members whose bands name begin with the name of the band leader rarely get much notice except by hard core fans. Joan Jett and name a few of the black hearts. In a few cases like Bonjovi, people knew Richie but that's the exception. Many people never really noticed the difference when Petty made solo albums. Some did but most people can't point to which songs came from them Campbell is a great guitarist but Tom Petty was the name people said when they talked about the music. No one ever said I got tickets to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They said they has tickets to see Petty, and who was on stage with him was an after thought. That changed a little over the years, but no even though it's an overused description on RU-vid he probably is under rated or unrecognized by average fans.
