@@susanlawrence8401 He was so awesome seen him 5 times and one time I was in Jacksonville and he came in and jumped up on our table and was jamming right in front of us. Miss him rip 😭
I love how he just seemed to soak up all of the love that the crowd was giving him. You could tell that he genuinely enjoyed hearing them sing his song.
@@bigredmachine1 WOW what a treasure FANTASTIC show I bet before all the the phone cameras probably brought back a great memory. I have only seen petty live 4 time but what I have seen from older show...they do not compare
Can we all agree this man was a god walking among humans, and we didn't deserve him? But he made the world a little bit better for ever existing. I miss you Tom Petty, you're the hero we didn't deserve.
@@petercarrillo751 to me i can relate because of tired relationships when they start to breakdown, it becomes a stage where you want them to argue and give it you, & your standing their like a mug letting anything pass, or up all night worrying ie "bring me through the night"
Yes, you young ones missed some of the best music ever made. Growing up in the 60s and then college in the 70s were great times. So many concerts with so many talented bands/musicians. I miss those days. I have all the vinyl plus the CDs. No radio for me.
I was at this concert! Still the best concert I ever attended! Everyone stood up all concert singing word for word with Tom! Amazing energy. Bad ass concert! RIP Tom Petty😎
😂 This one should have the most likes....you felt the only perspective of this night that someone who had been there could and lived to say the magic was real and everywhere. Authentic. He was more than for a lot of us. I know he's makin that music with the legends in the other realm😂❤
You bad ass you…fantastic…I assume you are keeping up with the Petty Country release in June 2024. The Dolly Parton rendition of Southern Accent is a friggin tear jerker..he was a good human and gave all of us joy, thought and understanding that if you have a gift …you give it away. It doesn’t have to be super star music. It can just be something as simple as caring for someone else. Everyone thinks they have to be a media influencer. What a bunch of bullshit. Just being human and being decent is kind of a good gift to mankind these days. so imy ramble is done. Peace and blessings from Gail in Central Florida. April 2024 just a few months from the election. Oh my God bro we can do this. 💙
I've seen Tom Petty live twice now. When he started to play this song..the audience didn't give him a chance to sing...we all did it for him...after we all did the first verse he said "You're all gonna put me out of a job..." The crowd went nuts!! He just took it all in. It was awesome!!!! What better way to show your appreciation for someone's work then to know all the words and sing as loud as you can. He put his heart and soul into both concerts I saw him at.
Loved it when he sat down and just listened to the crowd, too funny! I too would belt this song out when it came out on the radio. It's something about those words and the tune that you couldn't resist to belt it out, lol!
Tom was always extremely generous with his praise for Michael Campbell. Not just for his guitar playing but in the creation of these songs. Truly a great team.
This is my favorite version of this song. I was lucky to have seen Tom in concert 9 times. Wherever some wants to know what s Tom Petty concert was like, I point them to this version. He had such a cool grace on stage. When he looked out at the audience, you could swear he was either looking right at you, or he was specifically looking for you in the audience. Like he knew *you* were there. Yes, I still miss Tom Petty.
Todd Victorson I saw Tom Petty three times live..if he had lived..I would have gone three more times..if he never wrote another song..the atmosphere at his shows is incredible..
My favorite Petty tune of all he has done over the years. The "cool vibe" to the song and how it rips into the chorus sends chills and will forever remind me of my childhood years in the 70's! The opening chords of the guitar are probably as memorable, to most people of my age, as Smoke On The Water!
I think, compared to most other successful music stars, let alone rock legends, Tom Petty was more grounded, more normal and really about his fans, at least to a level that didn't drive him insane. He basically never lost his identity. He had his eccentricities, but nothing too extreme. He is one of the musicians who takes it, as he should, as a flattering compliment when people sing his songs at his concerts, along with him. The true greats always loved this, because it was a dead give away that they had the audience eating it all up! I can't even imagine how much of a rush it must be to have all those fans screaming for what you do, in a good way. I once performed an important task, while being watched with great anticipation. Upon completion of the task and a successful restart, I had about 200 people clapping and cheering, because it just kept them in a job. I have performed rescues from burning buildings and lifted a burning station wagon off a child, while others pulled him out and I have done other things that earned praise from many. But they were all small scale things. To have a crowd like that, cheering for you, must be a RUSH! Terrifying, exhilarating, exciting and I expect, a few other emotions, all at the same time. The adrenaline must just be flowing through ones veins like water. I also imagine, after a few years, it's nothing like that anymore, but still good. It's a coin toss with musical celebrities, as to whether they maintain a decent level of psychological health. Most of them become arrogant, self centered "divas," who are next to impossible to deal with. But some, the ones who are good (I don't mean good, as in skilled. I mean good, as in a person who actually cares about others, not just himself or herself) and actually enjoys it, seem to be able to create wall between their public life and personal life, allowing them to maintain a greater separation, thus allowing personal relationships a better chance, granting more privacy and overall, just allowing them to function normally, without feeling smothered. I think Tom Petty was on of these. I compared a couple of his earlier interviews and a couple of his later interviews. While he did mature over the years, as is normal, he didn't really pick any weird quirks that kind of make people wonder WTF! I think he found a balance between total isolation and actually being able to have a life outside of his musical career. Nothing I have stated here is based on any fact that I have any special knowledge of. It is pure speculation based on interviews and other publicly available information, combined with the fact that he seemed fairly grounded into the culture he grew up with, when he gave his interviews. So, while I think what I have said is mostly true, it is purely speculation and I could be completely wrong. He may have been stark raving mad, but hid it well. But, I just never saw or heard any madness in him. I remember, not long after they had recorded their first album for "The Travelling Wilburies." Roy Orbison, now making a very late career comeback as part of the super group, died of a heart attack. The music video for the song "End of the Line," when Roy sang his part, they just had a picture of him, sitting on a rocking chair. This made me sad. Here were 4 great artists, all of whom had produced hit music, all of whom were legends in their time, getting together to form a super group, which went straight to the charts with several songs from their first album. They worked well together. After the death of Roy Orbison, they released some more albums, but never had the same success as they did with that first album. I was just a kid, but it still made me sad. Now, Tom Petty is dead, too. Died at 66 years of age. That seems too young to me. But, I come from a family of people with long lives. In my family, not many die before reaching 90. Those that do, either suffered some injury which shortened their life, was killed in an accident, killed by violence or contracted some disease. We don't have heart attacks before reaching 80+ years. We don't seem to have much trouble with cancer. We are just people who tend to live longer than others. So, when I hear of someone dying at an age under 80, it just seems too young. There is one benefit to being from a family where men live to be 90+. Younger wives! LOL. Edited to correct typos, punctuation and a couple of grammar errors. Primary content remains the same.
Hey Tom Petty, a life long fan here. Your music is healing me after the passing of my beautiful, earth bound angel mother's passing. If you can ta, please, take the time to help usher my mommy into heaven I will be so grateful. I still miss you and suspect that I will always miss her. You will like her. Everyone did. RIP it up Mommy and Tom.
I hereby declare this video to be the absolute best single live performance in the history of the world. Based upon the merits of awesome musical talent, the emotion and gratitude that radiates out of his entire being, and the audience's over whelming powerful loving response. The video displays "good" on so many levels that it IS THE " ABSOLUTE BEST SINGLE LIVE PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD" AWARD.
LOL... well you're wrong, this isn't even a top 100 performance of all time. 2: sorry, him letting the audience do the whole first verse and chorus?? ummm, ya, i'd kinda rather hear Tom Petty do it? 3: Not even Petty's best song (great song but..) so I wouldn't rank this even in Petty's top live performances. 4: I guess for reason number four, I'll just leave you with this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FxCWi8NpoY8.html
My favorite bit when the audience is singing is they even catch some of the nuances with part of the audience doing the sustain and others singing words. So much fun!
Rock n Roll lost a legend when he passed, but Heaven gained a legend that day. R.I.P. Mr. Petty.. You are missed by so many. You touched your fans like not many ever had. Always and forever a fan!
I love the energy in the audience. I love the power in their voices. I love Tom and the Band. A lot of rockers live fast......and die young. RIP Mr. Petty, you earned the rest.
Dude the audience is like a choir, half of them sing the high background parts in the chorus "breakdooooowwwwnnn" while the others keep singing the normal melody.
they feel the groove an what this song sings through your heart makes you sound great cause you sing through your HEART THINK Mr. Petty didn't feel all he said ann sung shlaaaaaaaaa
He did the same when I saw him in '88 and again when I saw the opening show of what would be his final tour. It's cool to be a part of 10,000 people singing.
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never missed a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes but some times I wonder why bad thing always happen to good people
Just finished reading the biography he did with Warren Zanes. The shit this man went through while making his music, and _still_ he was a class act on stage every single night, playing some of the greatest music ever written. Of all the great musicians we've lost these past few years, his loss still hurts the most.
Yes, he's perfect, not too flashy. I love the performance of 'Don't Come Around Here...' In which he starts with the Gibson SG, moves on to the Rickenbacker with e bow & mandolin. I think it's from a video release? Definitely one of my favourites. TP is perfect foil on rhythm guitar too!
***** I'm no afficionado on guitar technique, but I've seen enough of Mike's playing to be amazed at what he can do. I saw a documentary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers beginnings, and Tom spoke of hearing Mike play for an audition---they needed a lead guitar player.. Most of the band was from Gainsville, Florida (Tom's hometown), but not Mike. Tom heard him, and basically told him "You're in the band. No question about it."
He's traveled internationally it's just the Gainesville, Florida accent. He's 100 percent American baby!! Proud he's from America. This song has rocked me since back in the day........LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Certainly my favorite Petty number, but what I find insanely cool about this video is how confident but at-ease he is both as a performer and with the audience. THIS is someone in sync with his band's fans, and the band is every bit as chill as well. This is all about PRESENCE to me. Maybe it is a bit shadowy, but I cant imagine why anyone would give this video a thumbs down
His 'breakdown' from 6:25 - 7:02 was awesome! That's real. What a great performance from everyone, even the crowd. One of my favorite songs and riffs ever. Never gets old. Love how they added the sax in there too.
This was in 1985 when this was filmed. You know you made when your fans sing your song so that you don't. 2021 now and still bothers me. gone to early but will never be forgotten. Such a iconic voice.
A class act. Tom genuinely enjoys and appreciates his audience. He's getting into their participation, feeling the oneness. RIP, BrotherThank you for the splendid music
In "05" I took my 15 year old son to see Tom Petty. He went not because he was that excited about Tom Petty, but for me. When "Break Down" came on I glanced at my son, his eyes were wide seeing his old man cutting loose and belting out ... "BABY!!!!" One the best times we spent together.... Thanks Tom....
we in America have been so blessed with musical talent, it goes far, far back. He will stand with all the greats, his style, delivery, songwriting skill, has always been front and center. I mean, when Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison want to play with you, that's a tough one to beat
This is around the first time that I saw him live and my friends had to drag me to the show....Ya, I was an idiot when I was a kid. I didn't even know this song, and the audience sung the entire song from start to finish...I don't think he said more than a few words and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing straight up. It was so awesome to see that level of interaction with the audience. It was incredible. By the next time we saw him, I made sure that I knew the song inside and out so I could belt it out with everyone else....So talented!
Cool story Greg! I had a similar, but different experience at a Black Label Society concert in Toronto around 2012/2013. Before BLS came on, someone back stage either started playing Oh Canada on keyboards, or it was a recording of keyboards. The crowd started singing almost immediately. By about 20 seconds in, about 98% of the crowd was singing it at the top of their lungs! It was almost deafening! Everyone was looking at one another, stunned, and thinking, can you believe this is happening? That too, made the hairs on my body stand up and my body tingle! Never have I heard such a heart felt rendition of our national anthem at ANY Canada Day festivities! Incredible indeed! BTW, this is probably my favorite of his with Refugee, Runnin' Down a Dream, and Love Is A Long Road!
Greg Wagner+What a great story! The first time I heard TP, I was just walking in the front door at a friends house, she was downstairs. But from upstairs I heard this,,,and it was like I was hypnotized. The rest of the group I came with went to see my friend, but I walked right up those stairs! I found her brother just staring at his stereo. It's funny that so many people remember the first time hearing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I can't remember any other band having such an impact! I graduated high school in 77, so they have been there all through every joy and sorrow and love and loss I have experienced. i am so glad I walked up those stairs and discovered the people who laid down the soundtrack to my life!
NO CAYCE YOU ARE NOT THE GOOF MANS THAT GOT BUSTED FOR MY SONS ..ITS THE GOOF MAN THAT ALLMOST DIED FOR YOUR SINS ITS ME YOU SET UP FOR MY OWN SONS THANX PETTY PS DONT SHUT DOWN COMMENTS NOSE OK
I really don't get it when someone can give a thumbs down to music like this. Why a thumbs down? Really? What's the issue? Do you not appreciate the blood, sweat and tears that went into this? Do you not hear the audience? They loved it so much they sang it for him. I love this song. I love Tom Petty and I love music. All of you who want to give this talented man a thumbs down can sit and spin on it, too.
This song freaking rocks...I love my fellow native Floridian! Tom Petty was Gainesville born and bred. I will miss him forever. His bands when he was still in Gainesville prior to heading to L.A., used to play our dances after football games, proms, etc. in high school in Lake Placid, Florida. Tom was really a kool dude. As an FSU Seminole Warrior Princess, I can honestly say that Tom Petty is my #1 favorite Gator. Then Tebow 🤗🤗🤗
That is so cool, to find a band before they became famous!!! There was one I remember up here in Milwaukee, 38 Special, I used to dance to there songs, even if no one danced with me!!!
Cool story there! Tulsas favorite native son and the “Tulsa Sound” troubadour Mr Leon Russell, signed Tom to his ‘Shelter Records’ label and the rest is history as they say. I saw Tom there in ‘79 on Damn the Torpedoes tour with the Fabulous Poodles opening. Can still picture the memory. I loved his music and this song is my #1 favorite of his.
God, i love this song. Makes me think of this guy. I would sit in my car, and play this song over and over and over again. This song is filled with so much emotion. The year was 1987. There are days when i still miss you David.......
I hate that he is gone. Damn…one song in and I already have tears. I planned on seeing so many more of your concerts. They were pure magic!!! Perma smile the whole concert…watching you float around on the stage. Love you Tom!!! Rest Easy…
I saw him in concert at the California State Fair in 1981 with Stevie Nicks. The crowd knew his songs as well as he did and sang every song with him.Best concert I ever attended!!!
Fantastic that Tom had such a big life, the guy really lived his life to the max and left us all this awesome legacy of fantastic song writing and music. So glad you lived Tom Petty.
Some people are born to be more than they ever imagined that they could be. Tom was a prime example of the I have to keep digging, I have to find a way out of where I am and the way of life I grew up knowing. He did that and shared his emotions and life stories like few ever have without giving it a second thought. A true and humble soul to the bone. Thank you for making our world better. If you want to change some ones life, give the gift of Tom Petty
I saw a tribute band that was named after him. It was f***** awesome. This band nailed every song down to every detail. Rest in peace Tom!!! I love you. I am 63 years old as of 2022
I MISS & LOVE THIS OUTRAGEOUS 'OUTLAW', MORE THAN I EVER REALIZED; THIS IS A LESSON FOR MANY OF US - LOVE & SHOW IT, NOW, BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE; THIS IS ONE SUPREME SONG!
Masterful Artist who clearly authentically LOVED his craft and gave GENEROUSLY. How grateful I am for his prolific gifts to the world- yet I shamelessly admit I still want more. Forgive me, Tom, for that. Peace be with you. You will be forever loved, you Heartbreaker.
RIP Mr. Petty... My first concert was Tom Petty in Tucson Az late 70's. My older brother and his wife bought advance tickets, I was brought along as a last minute birthday present... bought my ticket at the door... OMG row 4 and dead center! can't get much better for a first concert! This was the "Damn the Torpedeos" tour. He came back out for a second encoure... and spent almost 15 minutes doing breakdown.... As he came back on stage for that last time he had a 'big gulp' sized beer in his hand (The TCC sold alcohol back then) and screamed " You people are Crazy and dashed it across the audience... That spray of Tom's cold beer in a hot crowd... was awesome. As was the concert. It was an amazing night for my teenybopper self. I've seen him live more than any other artist, mostly by chance, even got to see Stevie Nicks show up on stage at a Phoenix show. A great artist, great talent. I miss you Mr. P.
Just to add to my comment... Last concert I saw with Tom was the one that Stevie showed up at. Compton Terrace south of Phoenix. It's (was?) an open air ampatheatre cameras were allowed. I was working in a photo lab in Flagstaff at the time, really into photography. I went to the show with a pretty nice 35mm SLR camera and a big lens. Took one of the best pictures of my life. Got Tom in profile... Hair blazing gold in the spotlights... perfect focus, but for his hand which was a blur as he played his guitar. I was about 23 at the time and too much life has gone by since, the picture has been lost to time. I had the framed 8x10 for years.
I didn't realize how great he was til he was gone, but he had an amazing career spanning 40 years. So many of his songs are now classics. Am really enjoying "Breakdown".
Saw Tom Petty a few years ago. Joe Cocker led off at The Columbia Gorge Amphitheater---- R.i.P, I could not believe the the talent and level they are as a band. One of the top 3 experiences of my life !
Someone once said we are gods Tom had a gift from God and he used it and we love him for that and will never forget Tom's music and the good healing feeling that comes so through his music and the end he's just a good baptist boy from somewheres south of Gainesville I'm looking forward to meeting him in the light and the love that is our Lord Jesus
This is a break down in the truest sense, a breaking down of the invisible wall separating the artist from his fans. We need this more than ever before. Tom Petty's passing has affected all of us, so for him and his memory, it's all right. Break down. Give it to him...one more time.
I saw Tom Petty twice and he performed in his hometown of Gainesville Florida for the first time since he was famous and I was shocked when I saw a mysterious woman standing by the stage and then when she walked out on the stage I realized that it was Stevie Nicks and she joined Tom Petty and they sang stop dragging my heart around together. The crowd went wild because we didn't know that she was going to be there. The chemistry between them was crazy. What a great time ❤
I know everyone of us in our vehicles every time we hear it , we all crank it wide open & sing it loud & we know every word 🔥🔥 RIP Tom Petty. Thank you for all the great music!!
Actually, I saw the Tampa show for Pack up the Plantation; In Tampa he was wearing a tuxedo jacket, and he revealed during this song, that inside that coat was a rebel flag.... It was so fucking awesome . TP concerts are for adults. Everyone behaves like their on valium. Calm. Cool. IT was classic Petty.
less then 2 minutes- in. I had to pause and rewind 7 times just to be sure I was hearing what I thought? The F@%king Crowd takes over, and sing's his song too him... !!!! ???? "That's Fuckin Awsome." That has to be Every Artist's Dream Come True??
This video still stands out as his BEST WORK!!! He was so confident...had the audience right were he wanted them and who else could have pulled this off the way he did .....being so LIT UP!!! He was the master...he broke the mold..I will always luv him and miss him 4-ever. RIP T.P.
