I would definitely put him in my top 10. I feel like his fans were distributed across the map. His voice didn’t resonate with a certain community, a movement (civil, police brutality, etc…) and he didn’t have a variety in demographics. When I say variety, compare 2Pac’s audience to Doom’s. 2Pac’s diction is easier for the average listener so everyone can listen to him without flipping a dictionary or going “Huh?” at smilies and metaphors constantly. All these as well as not cracking into the mainstream led to him not be a household named rapper. Most of the top rappers, represented something. If you say public enemy, I would say they represented a movement, NWA (police brutality, gangster mentality), NAS (repped the project in Queens and surrounding Burroughs). Without surfing the internet, if you tell me Doom I would say “Mask and comic’s”. What does that tell you? All the artists I mentioned earlier got their audience at the right time just when hip hop music was at it’s peak, when being black was still celebrated strongly and the boom pap sound was relevant. If you look at the top rappers of all time. They all have some type of connections with each other too. Like they’re related to each other in some way. Industry looks out for it’s own. When we crossed into the millennium year (2000/2001), that boom pap sound and rhyme-style was getting played out so it wasn’t getting played a whole lot on the mainstream media. People were also looking for something new and that’s when Eminem came into the scene. A white guy with a style that you can’t hate on. He’s the best invention since sliced bread, I mean Beastie Boys. Meanwhile, new sound and artists were found such as Kanye, Lil Wayne, G-Unit and etc.. While Doom still produced and was still active, the mainstream was looking for new artists not artists rolling over from the 90’s unless you were in the chart’s top 10 or finished the year 1998 or 1999 with a banger (Nas, Common, DMX etc…)
