My wife and I lived in an upper middle class neighborhood. Our neighbors often asked us if we were in financial trouble. Why? Our millennial children were looking for jobs (mowing grass, cleaning yards, babysitting, etc.). We never paid for any extras, so they had to work for whatever they wanted. Today my kids abhor debt and have FICO scores above 780.

It is funny how some people perceive frugality as a BAD thing. Several of my friends from college view it as odd that I opted to stay at home for a couple years and keep my perfectly functional but not so pretty old car after graduating and landing a good income. I'm not trying to brag or one up my friends, but I now have 0 debt and an amazing start to my financial life while they have spent tens of thousands on luxury apartment rent, financed expensive cars that I'd bet they won't pay off for a few more years, and are now beginning to worry that student loan payments are about to start back up. These financial choices really do matter and a little bit of foresight and discipline will really make your life so much more comfortable and less stressful...

@FischerFan

If I had adult children and they had just received their first credit card, I would instill lesson number one as follows: Show them the credit card and stipulate, 'THIS is NOT cash!' This represents a promise that you will pay for any purchase you make with it and within 30 days at that! I have known people who have become spend happy with these and have financially ruined their lives. Play it smart and don't fall behind in your payments and find yourself incurring unnecessary interest charges. It doesn't take long for an outstanding balance to snowball and it quickly becomes a slippery slope. If at all possible, pay for your purchases with a debit card.'.

A lot of the people close to me have acted like the women in this video who at 9:39 stated crying, knowing she should not had been doing things this way. None were as bad as her however many are not much better and about all of them are going to need change things a lot to have a stable retirement. I am 26 and having seen this from many people, scared me into thinking about better ways to use money. One thing that has been annoying to look back on/something for me to learn from is how much both my parents would think I needed so many things, while not thinking much about helping me learn the best ways to use money.

There's always going to be irresponsible people. When I was a teen my parents at some point gave me a fairly generous allowance but I had to buy EVERYTHING with it (outside living necessities). New clothes? Check your allowance. Bus ticket to school? Either that or if you want to save, bike to school. Taught me to live on a budget and respect the money I have. Hell, I'm at the point where making any big purchases is a decision I think over at least thrice, regardless of whether or not I could easily afford it out of the money I have. I'd rather save up in anticipation of a purchase than to finance it and be saddled with the debt for a while.

Yeah I get debt when it's needed for your life. But if it's random mall spending or online shopping, and you can't afford it, something's not right hah

It's kind of funny, only last week as I visited my parents, my dad started to lament how we didn't have much money when I grew up, and what we got as a family wasn't special. And I was just like... Are you kidding me dad? I am SO glad I didn't grow up lavishly, I now appreciate everything I have and I have never been a dime in debt. Not even once. I think about what I want to buy and appreciate what I got.... Also though we didn't go on fancy vacations when I was a kid, we went out camping and visited museums and did A LOT of family things together. I actually feel like we are closer as a family than many of those rich people where it's all about just having the most expensive travel to Cancun or whatever and then just do each their thing. So.... I am REALLY happy about my modest but real childhood and aim to continue living a modest life.

Comments are almost always blocked on Australian news, TV programs, documentaries, etc. I especially noticed this during Covid. Apparently, they discourage open discussion or opinions.

Australia and New Zealand both have the same problem. 40 years of property bubble and government borrowing to subsidize the irresponsible and lazy, that twisted the populations understanding of money. It made them even lazier and downright arrogant. My heavily indebted 27 year old co-worker here in NZ, told me she would pay ANYTHING to go to a Taylor swift concert, so I asked her what she would do if tickets were a thousand dollars? Without irony or sarcasm, she said would happily borrow more money and pay it because it was a "life experience". I was stunned. No wonder her debts add up to three times her yearly income.

The 60 Minutes Australia video is from 2008 - the are talking about the '08 crisis - that channel always re-uploads old videos. A dead giveaway is the old "HD-Ready" TV and stereo with cassette desk at 8:16.

I wasn’t taught about money and needed to start paying rent as soon as I graduated high school. It didn’t matter if I was ‘home’. So I moved out. $450.00 by the beach in CA in 1985 was expensive. I only moved back home when I had an accident and couldn’t work. As soon as I was able I moved out and now I’m married and work for myself. I live way under my means and only own a car (Kia) and 1/2 a house in Las Vegas. Life is good. 🌻

This is not a millennial or Y-generation problem. My own mother who is a baby boomer could never have self-control with a credit card. She always maxed them out. It was due to her egotistical belief that she could always pay it off 'somehow'. Even though she could not hold a job. I had saved her from her debts. Never again though. She racked it up again to go on vacation. Guess the reason? Oh, it's due to the stress of it all... So many people just cant be accountable.

I feel like cutting up the credit card, is kind of in the same vein as writing down habits you want to do. It is just symbolic, and just as writing ones habits in a journal does not force you to do the thing that you want to do, but it reinforces the commitment to the path. Because if the person called the cc and asked for new cards the cc company would have them out in that day's mail. Especially for the heavy users who are paying tons of interest. But people who use credit cards like they are doing is the reason that credit cards can charge so much in interest. They are the ones who cause significant risk.
