Wow! New subscriber who just discovered your channel while searching for a deeper understanding of what it means to be Reformed/Calvinist/Baptist and conservative in my Christianity and also to understand what this modern liberalism and wokeness is in the church and how it is destroying it. I was raised in a Christian home but in the Assemblies of God but left in my late teens because it just didn’t seem quite right. Spend several decades trying to figure out which denomination was “right” until my dad recommended I read R. C. Sproul’s What Is Reformed Theology. He said it changed his Christianity and I can happily say it did the same for me. I’m a contractor who works alone and I’ve watched close to a dozen of your videos already this week. I have been saying for years we are in need of another Reformation and Great Awakening to bring us back to the heart of the gospel, the five solas, TULIP, and a passion to follow Christ in a time in history where most Christian’s (if they really are Christian’s) have been deceived while sitting in a church under a pastor because the pastors are being deceived by the devil and the world. Anyway, wanted to say you brought a lot of clarity to all the nuances that can be confusing of being Reformed/Calvinist/Baptist, etc. So glad I found your channel. You are a God send in that you say what I think about a lot of topics, get me thinking deeper about other topics, and have the courage to say what needs to be said and call out false doctrine and teachers and theologians and challenge us to investigate more on our own with recommended books and teachers. Thank you and may God further bless you and your ministry. I have a lot to learn about theology, church, culture, and eschatology (I am definitely postmil with a bent towards partial Preterism) but with your help and God’s spirit bringing me discernment I will grow in the Lord.

Thanks Joel for this teaching on New Calvinist vs Old Calvinist - very helpful. I think a similar thing is happening in Australia - there are some churches (a minority) that are "Old Calvinist" in there theology and practices that are growing. Most churches that are supposed to be confessional and Calvinistic aren't growing, and are more like the "New Calvinists" that they worshipped.

I always wondered why regulative principle worship doesn’t include instruments at all. I understand why you wouldn’t go electric guitars and things, but aren’t harps and horns, etc referenced in scripture? It might be a simple answer, I’ve never looked into it, but instruments are mentioned in scripture.

Excellent analysis, Pastor Joel, explained with great clarity. I have a question. The doctrine that has most attracted me to your ministry and to that of Jeff Durbin, is "we don't lose down here." or rather "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end". I struggle very much with understanding cessationism, if that is the right word. I have been given insight from the Holy Spirit through what I would call discernment. I don’t prescribe to healing ministries or tongues as it it displayed today. I just want to close and right with our Lord. Can anyone please help me understand?
@MansterBear
@MansterBear Год назад
Cessationist believe the apostolic gifts (healing prophecy and tongues) have ceased. The other gifts, like discernment, still remain. Continuationists often think cessationists believe that all gifts have ceased, but that’s not the case. It’s just that those sign gifts have ceased. Cessationist also usually believe that speaking prophetically still happens, but not prophecy in the sense of predicting the future, but in the sense of speaking Gods word and it’s application to todays culture/problems. For example, apologia and Jeff durbin are cessationists, but they believe we should speak prophetically to the govt and remind them that they are ultimately under God and have a duty to rule righteously.
@hudjahulos
@hudjahulos Год назад
Try thinking of it as a difference between brothers as to how God continues to work in the world. Most orthodox Christians agree the gifts of apostleship ceased in the first century with passing of Christ’s apostles and that also meant the closing of the canon (since only inspired apostles were used by God for recording scripture). In that sense almost all Christians are cessationists. The disagreement is which gifts were especially for the first century, like prophecy and healing, and which continue today, like hospitality and teaching.

New Calvinism was theologically distinct from old Calvinism in a few regards: 1. New Calvinism was complementarian instead of being patriarchal. 2. New Calvinism embraced and emphasized contemporary forms of worship. 3. The majority of the New Calvinist were Credo Baptists. 4. New Calvinism had an emphasis on being in the city.

Piper's softness on patriarchy and his son being a raging atheist (those two things are probably related) are valid reasons to have concerns about aspects of his example and his teaching but Continuation properly understood and contextualized is the correct position and I don't see how anyone who claims to simply accept the fact that we live in God's strange magical world can think otherwise. The Holy Spirit is tactical and doesn't not throw pearls before swine so every single Christian living in modernist societies running on the fumes of Christendom does not have need of the miraculous gifts used as Signs, but they very much appear and work great witness in places and peoples where they will be expected and accepted, such as on the mission field amongst tribal and superstitious peoples. I have, and have trusted friends and family who have, experienced supernatural and awesome things. Such things will be more common and more needed in the years ahead as our society seeks for signs 9f a way out of the wreck of modernism and some return to paganism and pantheism.

Do we really have to call it Calvinism? Makes it sound like we worship John Calvin and/ or believe what believe because John Calvin said so. We need to stop calling what we believe as Calvinism. I already have. I believe what I believe because that is what I believe that the Bible is teaching us. And I also believe that our Bible is the word of God. And I believe every single thing in it, whether I understand it or not. I do not believe it because John Calvin said so. I am not a Calvinist just because we believe the same thing.

I learned some things here and much of the explanation was very good. But man, you have a very strong habit of drawing wild conclusions that are not supported by your own evidence. I see a strong habit developing where people keep saying "well, they were Calvinistic in their soteriology" as though that diminishes something. It sounds to me that what is happening is that some people are using a technical term to mask what they are criticizing. Here's a better way to put it: "Well, they faithfully preach the Gospel but that's not quite good enough to say they're TR (TM)" That's what "calvinistic soteriology" is. It's faithful Gospel preaching. In a time when faith Gospel preachers are not exactly a dime a dozen, I wouldn't be so excited to use this as a criticism. In fact, even when faithful Gospel preachers are a dime a dozen, I STILL wouldn't use this as a criticism. FURTHER, I would not even be so fast to call many of these guys "light" on their Calvinism. The three men who have done the most in the last 50+ years to faithfully preach Reformed theology on a wide-scale basis are RC Sproul, John MacArthur and John Piper. Two of these guys are on your list as apparently "watering down" Reformation theology. I find that to be UTTERLY ABSURD. Those guys are incidentally three of the most effective, Spirit-filled popular-level preachers and authors of our time. What exactly do you expect to prove to anyone with some of these comments? You sir, in particular, strike me as an oddly self-appointed representative of "old Calvinism" and seem to give yourself an easy pass as an "anomaly" for being a Baptist. I don't think you would find that Calvin himself would give you such an easy waiver on this subject. And quite a number of other, I might add. You might do well to turn that same critical analysis you have for John Piper on yourself and see how you measure up to the expectations of the Westminster Divines. I am not all-together convinced how well you measure up to the 1689 LBCF, personally. It is not hard to find a PCA pastor who has quite a many words of warning regarding Doug Wilson, too. In fact, he seems to have done very well in the denomination HE FOUNDED. There are quite a many points of dispute OPC and PCA ministers and theologians would have with Doug Wilson. PRETTY SERIOUS ones, and on those I think it would be quite a stretch to find support from Calvin or anyone between Calvin and Westminister and even beyond for that matter. I don't say all this to mean that I don't listen to all these guys and read their books. I have done all that for years. In fact, the only reason I know about THIS ministry is because of those guys. But this one is a strong outlier to me for it's propensity to stone-throw without providing substantial support for the invective. It doesn't QUITE cross the line, but gets awful close to it, when it comes to slander and outright misrepresentation. On some of these other subjects, if you're going to try to draw a hard line between what you're calling patriarchy and complementarianism, I think once again you guys are making a move in the wrong direction. Not even necessarily because I disagree on every point or didn't already draw the same conclusions in many cases AS A COMPLIMENTARIAN. There's really many points of agreement that warrant discussion, mostly when it comes to extending the IMPLICATIONS of what we already agree on. If you want to somehow distinguish yourself on these points, then I suppose it will be so. But how about let's not re-write history as though you wouldn't have been kicked straight out of Geneva post-haste not because of one, but SEVERAL points of doctrine you embrace but seem to think you would have gotten a pass on because you're friends with Doug Wilson. You don't seem to realize that they would have kicked Wilson out before they got around to YOU. Additionally, if you have to distinguish yourselves by attempting to convince me that I need to find fault with John MacArthur or John Piper then you're going to have a hard time paddling that canoe up my creek, sir. Frankly, I find you to be frequently pretentious and have a strong habit of stating these kind of wild conclusions that simply are not supported by history or the facts. I might not agree with Dr. MacArthur or Dr. Piper on many things, some of them big, but "watered down" is not a characterization that I could use in any honest discussion about these guys. Their preaching ministries speak for themselves. Their faithfulness as Gospel preachers is without doubt. The way you close this discussion is frankly offensive to me, but I'm a bit tired all around with these "truly Reformed" discussions that frankly have been going on at least as long as I've been alive for half a century. Well, it's not "truly Reformed" to always be debating whether or not we could earn the approval of dead guys who often didn't even agree with each other. In my estimation, the closest thing to a full-fledged modern-day Puritan (Dr. Sproul) is the one guy who always reminded us all of this: "ecclesia reformata, semper reformanda secundum verbi Dei" and maybe THAT is the kind mental framework we should embrace if we want to be "truly Reformed." Here's a start: to me, you're either a very confused Baptist, or there is SOME explanation for how you can reconcile theonomic postmillennialism with the 1689 LBCF. Rather than finding fault with the greatest living popular preachers of our time, how's about turning that spotlight on yourself and explain to us how you piece all that together. I will be far more impressed if you can demonstrate faithfulness to your OWN confessional tradition rather than pointing out how others fail to live up to traditions they don't even claim for themselves.

As one of those pathetic boomers you tend to want to castigate, let me just point to the state of the church prior to the "Jesus people" turmoil of the 60s and 70s. The work done back then surely set the stage for what God will do now in this new generation. Be grateful, not grating, about the improved but byinadequate work done in the years before you hit the scene. God was at work in those days, even apart from the churches, because the theologically sound churches were infamously moribund - just defensively trying to hang on and survive. Then came, yes, like the movie showed, a kind of Jesus Revolution. Evangelism, discipleship, and prayer broke out everywhere - in neighborhoods, in workplaces, ... Everywhere! Let's proceed toward God's best without deriding the best efforts of others who came before us, shall we?
